How prefrontal dynamics reorganize to support such composition when task demands compete within a shared neural population remains unclear. Here, we developed a dual-task paradigm in mice that combined a delayed paired-association (DPA) task with an olfactory Go/No-Go (GNG) discrimination embedded in the delay period. Mice learned the dual task rapidly, with early errors dominated by false alarms on unpaired DPA trials. Interference was asymmetric: Go cues disrupted performance more than No-Go cues, pinpointing premature action rather than memory failure as the central learning bottleneck. Population calcium imaging from medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) showed that sample identity, choice tendency, and test identity occupied near-orthogonal subspaces of a shared low-dimensional manifold. As training progressed, sample representations remained stable while delay-period activity shifted away from the action-associated region. To probe the underlying circuit mechanisms, we trained low-rank recurrent neural networks on the same paradigm. Networks developed a circular manifold on which memories were stored as attractors at distinct angular positions, and test stimuli acted as compositional rotation operators, routing stored memories to appropriate actions. Dual-task training relocated mnemonic attractors to a position that a reduced geometric model identified as Pareto-optimal—revealing a fundamental tradeoff in which optimizing one task necessarily impairs the other. Consistently, optogenetic inhibition of ACC→mPFC projections during the delay displaced attractor geometry and selectively biased DPA versus GNG accuracy, matching the reduced model's prediction. Together, our results reveal how prefrontal circuits dynamically reshape attractor geometry through learning-dependent attractor fine-tuning, providing a mechanistic framework for how cortex resolves competing cognitive demands. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Remarkably high turnover rates in neural connectivity have been observed under baseline conditions, and these rates increase even more significantly in response to stimulation or perturbation. However, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms and biological function of this drastic form of brain plasticity. Since direct experiments on connectivity at the synaptic level are notoriously difficult to conduct and analyze, formal models are crucial for predicting and understanding the emergent properties of networks (or graphs) with highly dynamic structures. Building on our previous work on homeostatic structural plasticity, we have developed a new model of self-organizing networks based on the “directed configuration model.” It exhibits Hebbian plasticity (“neurons that fire together wire together”) and engram formation without specific molecular mechanisms. I will also discuss possible connections with psychological phenomena such as classical conditioning, extinction, and blocking, and describe new machine learning strategies based on self-organizing networks that can be derived from our biologically motivated theory. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The Open Science in Practice Summer School is a 5-day immersive programme held in Cambridge (UK), bringing together students and early-career researchers interested in integrating open science into their daily work. The summer school is designed for students and early-career researchers who want to explore and implement open science practices in their work. Yet their dynamics are difficult to study directly, because high-dimensional nonlinear systems can exhibit rich behavior that is hard to summarize in terms of individual trajectories. In this talk, I will discuss an approach that seeks to understand such dynamics through the structure of the network’s equilibria. I will focus on a random balanced network of threshold-linear units that undergoes a transition from a single stable equilibrium to extensive chaos as the disorder strength crosses a critical value. Using a combination of Kac–Rice theory, replica calculations, numerical root-finding, and dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the chaotic regime contains an exponentially large number of equilibria. These equilibria are all saddles, but with only a fractionally small number of unstable directions. Surprisingly, despite the completely random connectivity, the equilibria are not scattered randomly through phase space. Instead, they are strongly correlated and confined to a comparatively small region. The chaotic attractor lies within this same region, suggesting a direct geometric link between the organization of unstable equilibria and the collective structure of the dynamics. This picture helps explain why networks with extensive chaos can nevertheless display dynamics dominated by a relatively small number of collective modes. More broadly, the results suggest that the geometry of equilibria provides a useful complementary perspective to dynamical mean-field theory for understanding high-dimensional neural dynamics. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The position focuses on developing interpretable AI and computational modeling frameworks to study fundamental questions in neuroscience. The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects integrating neural recordings, dynamical systems models, recurrent neural networks, and modern AI approaches to study cognition, neural dynamics, and motor control. Its agenda is to link formal (mathematical) descriptions of dynamical systems to a description of perception in terms of beliefs and goals. The argument has two parts: the first calls on the lawful dynamics of any (weakly mixing) ergodic system – from a single cell organism to a human brain. These lawful dynamics suggest that (internal) states can be interpreted as modelling or predicting the (external) causes of sensory fluctuations. In other words, if a system exists, its internal states must encode probabilistic beliefs about external states. Heuristically, this means that if I exist (am) then I must have beliefs (think). The second part of the argument is that the only tenable beliefs I can entertain about myself are that I exist. This may seem rather obvious; however, it transpires that this is equivalent to believing that the world – and the way it is sampled – will resolve uncertainty about the causes of sensations. We will consider the implications for functional anatomy, in terms of predictive coding and hierarchical architectures, and conclude by looking at the epistemic behaviour that emerges – using simulations of active inference. - SPEAKER: *Karl J. He invented statistical parametric mapping (SPM), voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and dynamic causal modelling (DCM). These contributions were motivated by schizophrenia research and theoretical studies of value-learning, formulated as the dysconnection hypothesis of schizophrenia. Mathematical contributions include Variational Laplace and generalized filtering for hierarchical Bayesian model inversion. Friston currently works on models of functional integration in the human brain and the principles that underlie neuronal interactions. His main contribution to theoretical neurobiology is a free-energy principle for action and perception (active inference). Friston received the first Young Investigators Award in Human Brain Mapping (1996) and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1999). In 2000 he was President of the international Organization of Human Brain Mapping. In 2003 he was awarded the Minerva Golden Brain Award and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. For example, researchers often model human behavior on bandit tasks using variants of Q-learning. While this approach has been highly productive, leading to landmark discoveries such as the dopamine reward prediction error hypothesis, it also has limitations. This talk focuses on the lack of generalizability of such models: Even if they closely fit behavior on the original task, models derived from the one-task-one-model paradigm usually predict behavior on other tasks quite poorly. I argue that this lack of generalizability is a fundamental problem for the cognitive sciences: we intuitively expect our models to be robust to superficial task differences, such as variations in the number of choice options, reward probabilities, or the exact kind of non-stationarity. I will propose potential solutions to this problem along two dimensions: the behavioral dataset and the computational model. Regarding computational models, I will introduce work in which we moved beyond the limitations of hand-crafted one-off models by employing flexible, data-driven methods. These methods allowed us to compare classes of models instead of individual model instances, allowing us to cover the space of possible models more exhaustively, and innovate cognitive mechanisms very efficiently. For the behavioral dataset, we move from using single learning tasks to a comprehensive task space that encompasses most existing paradigms in the literature, while closing the gaps between them in a near-continuous fashion. In particular, the interactions between higher centers (e.g. the motor cortex), the spinal cord and the musculoskeletal system are poorly understood. NITMB Ideathon, August 10-12, 2026: Applications are open

The National Institute for Theory and Mathematics MathBio Ideathon will take place August 10–12, 2026 in Chicago! The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers with interests at the interface of biology and mathematics to tackle unsolved problems through interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will share their expertise via lightning talks and form vertically integrated teams (PIs and trainees) around the most promising ideas. The teams will tackle these problems and formulate actionable research plans. Teams will have the opportunity to continue their work to solve these problems at a later date through NITMB's Focused Research Award Program. It is based on spiking, event-driven architectures in which memory and computation are closely integrated. Neuromorphic chips have already shown several promising advantages over conventional von Neumann architectures, particularly in terms of energy efficiency. This workshop will explore the theoretical foundations of neuromorphic computing, with a focus on algorithms and computational complexity. Although the hardware has developed rapidly, the theory has not kept pace. Our aim is to create a forum for discussion on rigorous models of neuromorphic systems, allowing researchers to study their computational power and compare them with classical models of computation. Relating these patterns to the structure of the network is a central goal of theoretical neuroscience. Classic neural field and rate models have been powerful tools for this purpose due to their analytical tractability. Here, we show that the recently-developed combinatorial threshold-linear network (CTLN) model is a mean-field theory for excitatory-inhibitory Hawkes networks, with clustered connectivity, in an inhibition-stabilized regime. This mapping allows us to leverage powerful analytical results for CTLN networks to predict diverse macroscopic dynamics of clustered Hawkes networks, including metastability between various macroscopic fixed points, limit cycles, and chaotic attractors. The work will be carried out in the center of Paris and the newly created Neuromodulation Institute. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. About the Project This position is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration involving computational neuroscientists, clinicians, and engineers. The goal is to establish model-driven, multi-site stimulation experiments in human patients and move towards novel therapies for psychiatric disorders through the control of human brain dynamics via closed-loop stimulation. As an initial step toward these broader goals, the postdoctoral researcher will work with electrophysiological data collected from epilepsy patients implanted with ~124 intracranial LFP electrodes, enabling simultaneous recording and multi-site stimulation. We already collected several datasets (open-loop) and up to 4 subjects are collected per month through a national network of clinicians. The work carried out by the successful applicant will sit at the intersection of machine learning, computational neuroscience and data analyses of human intracranial electrophysiology. The medium-term ambition is to expand this work to additional patient populations, including individuals with treatment-resistant major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and to incorporate recording techniques such as large-scale multi-unit activity and sub-second neuromodulation (e.g. dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, etc) detection using ML-augmented voltammetry. Key responsibilities include developing data-driven state-space models of neural dynamics for optimal control policies for stimulation as well as inference pipelines for predicting network responses of intracranial recordings. The position emphasizes computational modeling, theory, and algorithmic development, rather than hands-on experimental data collection. Candidate Profile We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong quantitative and computational skills, and demonstrated research experience in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, simulation-based inference, reinforcement learning, generative/diffusion models and dynamical systems. Required Skills and Experience - Strong scientific programming skills in Python, in particular proficiency in PyTorch, Jax or related - Demonstrated experience in machine learning - Excellent written and spoken English. - Direct experimental experience is not required. However, the successful candidate should be enthusiastic about interacting with clinicians, neurosurgeons, and patients during experimental planning and execution. Preferred but not required - Experience working with time series data, in particular intracranial recordings (LFP, ECoG, depth electrodes) in humans or other animals. OPM-FLUX Toolkit 2026 - Register now!

Dear all, We are delighted to announce that the OPM-FLUX toolkit will be held on the 13th-16th July 2026 at St. Catherine’s College at the University of Oxford! We encourage everyone who is interested in OPM-MEG data analysis to apply (ECRs and more senior researchers and clinicians included!). The OPM-FLUX toolkit course provides a comprehensive introduction to analysing OPM-MEG data using OPM-FLUX, an advanced analysis pipeline for human electrophysiological data. Originally designed for SQUID-based MEG, the FLUX pipeline has been adapted for OPM-MEG. While OPM-MEG offers exciting opportunities in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, analysing its data can be challenging due to technical complexities and a lack of standardised methods. To meet the increasing demand for accessible training in this area, we have developed the FLUX toolkit, built on MNE-Python, a leading MEG analysis toolbox. Participants will be taught the theoretical foundations of OPM sensors and human electrophysiology and gain practical experience with OPM FLUX. In the mornings we will have lectures on the basics of data analysis as well as examples on novel cognitive neuroscience research-based MEG or OPM-MEG. In the afternoon, we will have hands-on data analysis workshops applying the OPM-FLUX pipeline on a data set collected from the local OPM systems. Will cover the analysis of FieldLine as well Cerca/QuSpin data. The analysis sections will include the BIDS format, preprocessing, event-related fields, spectral analysis, source modelling, and multivariate pattern analysis. We will not provide hands-on training on the actual data acquisition, but we will outline the general steps required. Yet these ideas usually assume rhythms that are strong, sustained, and regular, whereas in vivo oscillations are often weak, transient, noisy, and variable in frequency and phase. In this talk, I will argue that such “no-metronome” oscillations are not just noisy fluctuations, but coordinated complex dynamics with functional consequences. Combining analyses of neural activity recordings during actual behavior (mice and non-human-primate LFPs and human EEG) with computational modelling, I will discuss evidence that transient oscillatory events can carry task-relevant information and support flexible communication through spatiotemporally structured relationships across populations, timescales, and frequencies. Most existing research treats expectations as static, assuming they remain fixed in time. However, real-life expectations are often dynamic, fluctuating as new information becomes available. For example, during a soccer game, your expectations of seeing your team winning will likely rise and fall as the game unfolds. In the main part of this talk, I will present a series of studies demonstrating that human expectations can be tracked at sub-second timescales. Using slot machines as a case study, we leverage the continuous deceleration of the reels to elicit moment-by-moment fluctuations in reward expectations. To capture these dynamics, we take complementary approaches: we use the high temporal resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) to track neural signatures of evolving expectations, and we develop a novel behavioral paradigm (“Slot or Not”) designed to measure changes in expectations via betting behavior. Across four studies, we show that expectations fluctuate continuously and can be tracked both behaviorally and neurally. Extending these findings, a subsequent intracranial study shows that the human orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) encodes the moment-by-moment changes of reward expectations. In the second part of this talk, I will return to the relationship between expectations and satisfaction. If expectations shape satisfaction, and if they are best conceptualized as dynamic trajectories rather than static quantities, a key question arises: does the trajectory leading up to an outcome influence how that outcome is evaluated? I will outline a new research direction aimed at formalizing this relationship using computational modeling. This is ongoing work, and I welcome feedback on how best to formalize these ideas. Finally, I will discuss potential extensions of this framework to psychopathology, asking whether alterations in dynamic expectations may characterize conditions such as Major Depressive Disorder and Gambling disorder. We are happy to announce the *first Open Lab Online workshops *on *Bonsai*. *Bonsai* is an open-source reactive programming language that is particularly useful for modern behavioral neuroscience experiments. It allows users to synchronize multiple data streams, precisely deliver stimuli, and run experiments in closed-loop settings, while integrating signals and devices from different systems. From calcium imaging and sound recordings to sensors, feeders, motors, and stimulus delivery systems, Bonsai offers a flexible and powerful way to build experimental workflows. These workshops correspond to *Module I* of a *3-module online course of increasing difficulty*. In this first module, participants will be introduced to the basics of Bonsai — its logic, core principles, and potential applications. The workshop will also cover how to track animals during experiments, detect their presence in ROIs, run simple closed-loop paradigms, and perform basic logical operations. Dan Goodman About the role We are seeking a Research Assistant (a Masters graduate wanting to undertake a PhD) or Research Associate (a PhD graduate wanting to undertake a postdoc). Our aim is to explore new approaches to energy-efficient artificial intelligence based on temporal neural computation. The project investigates how spiking neural networks, temporal coding, and learned neural delays can enable accurate computation with extremely low-precision weights, potentially unlocking a new generation of ultra-efficient AI hardware. Working at the intersection of machine learning, computational neuroscience, and digital hardware design, the successful candidate will contribute to developing neural architectures in which time (spike timing and delays) replaces numerical precision and memory movement as the key computational resource. The project will combine algorithm development with hardware-aware modelling and evaluation on FPGA-based platforms. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help define new approaches to temporal neural computation and energy-efficient AI. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work on fundamental questions in neuromorphic and energy-efficient AI, while developing techniques that could translate into future AI accelerators and edge-AI technologies. The role will be affiliated with NeuroWare, the new national Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic Computation, providing the post-holder access to a rich network of industrial and academic collaborators and routes to direct impact. Pre-doctoral candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates appointed as Research Assistant will have the opportunity to register for a PhD during the appointment, subject to standard university procedures. What you would be doing In this role, you will investigate neural architectures that exploit temporal coding and learned delays to enable efficient computation on digital hardware. You will develop and evaluate spiking neural network models, explore training methods for delay-based computation, and analyse how temporal representations trade off with weight precision and memory usage. You will primarily be collaborating with three Imperial College academics: Prof Christos Bouganis, Prof George A. You will implement models in software frameworks for neural simulation and machine learning, and work with hardware-aware efficiency metrics to evaluate energy, memory, and latency trade-offs. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. They end up being overwhelmed by the coding challenges they face and keep re-inventing the wheel. In the hope to free more time for research they increasingly rely on generative AI, which may produce runnable code without the need to fully understand it. Such code can neither be reused nor trusted to work correctly and, as a result, scientists are hesitant to share it and publish it. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are interactive and allow participants to acquire direct hands-on experience with the topics. Participants will work in pairs throughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. This school is targeted at PhD students, postdocs and more senior researchers from all fields, who do a lot of programming in their academic life, but were never taught how to do so properly. Competence in programming and basic knowledge of Python and git is assumed. Dear friends and colleagues, The Perceptual Inference Group at the BCBL (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language) in San Sebastian, Spain, is hiring a postdoctoral researcher to work on an ERC-funded project investigating how the brain learns and exploits the statistical structure of sensory world during sensory processing. The exact methodology will be tailored to the postdoc's interests and may include ultra-high resolution fMRI, E/MEG, and/or computational modelling. The ERC project is being developed together with the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, and there may be opportunities for collaborations. This is particularly useful in various domains, including physics, biology, machine learning, and economics, among others. After introducing the Optimal Transport (OT) problem at finite temperature, we show how it can be formulated as a statistical physics problem. This approach allows us to derive very efficient algorithms to effectively compute the distance between two probability distributions. The a priori unrelated Schrödinger bridge (SB) problem is presented, and it is shown to be a dynamical version of the optimal transport problem. Indeed, the Schrodinger bridge looks for the most probable path in probability distribution space, which connects two given probabilities. The Schrodinger bridge problem, originally devised for freely diffusing particles, can be generalized to the case of interacting particles. It can be formulated in terms of functional integrals over bosonic fields, which allows us to derive partial differential equations that characterize the most probable paths in probability space. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. I would like to announce a new preprint on the neural substrate of consciousness. “What I Am Will Be? A Convergence A Topology of Neural Substrate, Structure, an Endomorphism: Consciousness Its Cells-Itself” Arthur Stewart (2026). Zenodo. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19342121 https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19342121 The paper proposes that consciousness is constituted by synchronized flow across four neural loops, each operating on a distinct computational axis. The topology of the substrate (a four-node directed graph closing through endomorphism) is argued to generate the structural features philosophers associate with the hard problem: phenomenal immediacy, temporal presence, ownership, and qualitative character. These follow as consequences of the topology itself rather than requiring additional explanatory apparatus. The paper includes a systematic comparative critique of Global Neuronal Workspace, Integrated Information Theory, Thalamocortical Loop theory, and Predictive Processing/Free Energy Principle, identifying specific empirical and structural gaps in each. Beyond their established role in synaptic plasticity, spines have been hypothesized to contribute to the formation of connectivity by enabling dendrites to contact more distant axons. This raises the possibility of a direct relationship between local network topology and spine morphology at the level of individual neurons. Understanding this relationship is central to explaining how structured, non-random connectivity emerges in cortical microcircuits. In this webinar, we will investigate this hypothesis using electron microscopy data from the MICrONS project within the Open Brain Institute Virtual Labs framework. Specifically, we will: * Analyze the MICrONS connectome using adjacency matrices and Python-based motif detection methods * Identify neurons with high participation in specific connectivity motifs * Reconstruct neuronal morphology using OBI skeletonization and spine extraction tools * Quantify spine density and morphology in relation to motif participation We will test the following hypotheses: * Neuronal participation in motifs is correlated with spine density * Synaptic participation in motifs is correlated with spine size This workflow provides a concrete connectomics pipeline linking network structure to synaptic anatomy. Finally, we will outline a follow-up study leveraging Virtual Labs for biophysical simulations of the reconstructed neurons, enabling investigation of how motif participation and spine structure influence synaptic integration. We are opening *2 remote internship position t*o join our team at the forefront of *open research in NeuroAI*. Our work explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), using both invasive and non-invasive neural recordings. As part of Tether Evo, you will contribute to high-impact, open-source projects focused on *encoding* and *decoding brain activity* leveraging AI. Our mission is to advance scientific understanding while building real-world applications for neural interfaces, guided by transparency, accessibility, and collaboration. *Projects*: 1) Compositional Structure in Speech-Related Neural Signals (6 months) — We are seeking an intern to investigate whether speech-related neural activity exhibits a compositional structure, where smaller reusable units such as phonemes combine to form larger units such as words. Recent work by Narasimha et al. in intracortical BCI has shown that neural activity underlying attempted handwriting contains reusable motif-like structure and that explicitly modeling this structure can improve decoding generalization and sample efficiency, particularly in low-data settings. Building on this idea, this project will ask whether an analogous organization exists in speech-related neural signals. A central challenge is that the available speech labels do not provide precise word- or phoneme-level timestamps, so the first phase of the project will focus on developing methods to segment continuous neural recordings into approximate intervals corresponding to individual speech units. Once such alignments are established, the project will analyze whether shared phonemic content across different words is reflected in shared neural structure—for example, whether the neural activity corresponding to the “book” portion of *NOTEBOOK* and *COOKBOOK* is more similar than the activity corresponding to their non-overlapping parts. 2) Bidirectional Modeling of Cursor Control from Human Intracortical Data *(3 months)* — This project will develop models for both decoding and simulating cursor-control neural activity from human intracortical recordings. Using publicly available datasets from Karpowicz et al. and Wilson et al., the first phase will focus on building a neural decoder that translates neural activity into cursor kinematics, including position and velocity. After achieving reliable decoding performance, the second phase will develop a neural encoder that predicts plausible neural activity from an intended cursor trajectory. The final goal is to integrate both models into a demonstration application that can simulate end-to-end cursor control, using either recorded neural data or synthetic neural activity generated by the encoder, and thereby provide a practical testbed for studying cursor BCI behavior in both real and simulated settings. *What We’re Looking For:* - Candidates doing a PhD in computational neuroscience, AI, computer science, mathematics or similar fields, towards the end of their program and that could enroll in a 3-6 months industry internship. Also exceptional MSc or people that finished their PhD in the last year are eligible for the positions. - Strong proficiency in Python and PyTorch. Experience with object-oriented programming and knowledge of *software engineering best practices for machine learning research (version control, testing, experiment tracking, reproducibility, and modular code design)*. However, many of today’s wearable computing and human–machine interfaces still feel “smart, yet not quite helpful.” They are often fragmented, difficult to personalize, and frequently struggle to transform rich but noisy multimodal signals, such as physiology (e.g., heart rate, neural/muscle activity), body movement, and environmental context, into reliable, meaningful real-world support. At the same time, generative AI and foundation/world models are reshaping the landscape, shifting the paradigm beyond isolated sensors and single-purpose algorithms toward integrated, adaptive, context-aware Human–AI–Machine systems. To make the use of these technologies feel like a natural extension of ourselves, this workshop brings together researchers and practitioners across biosensing and measurement, neuroscience, AI, robotics, ubiquitous computing, and human-centered design to define the next frontier of Empowered Co-Intelligence: wearable interfaces that fuse three complementary “intelligences”—(1) biological intelligence, to infer human state and intent by modeling how people naturally think and behave; (2) physical/embodied intelligence, which understands body dynamics and real-world physics so interaction and assistance remain safe and effective; and (3) spatial intelligence, to leverage nearby sensors, IoT devices and smart environments for continuous situational awareness. These capabilities are further amplified by generative AI—models trained on large-scale data that can integrate heterogeneous signals to predict, reason, and adapt—enabling systems to become more personalized and context-aware. Together, these capabilities can overcome the limits of noisy on-body sensing and constrained wearable computing by turning fragmented measurements into coherent, actionable assistance. Our vision is an AI that operates quietly in the background, like an invisible layer of artificial cortex, running in parallel with our own cerebral cortex and coordinating across different lobes: not simply following rules, but learning your patterns, anticipating your needs, and adjusting in real time. The result is 24/7 support for thinking, decision-making, and physical action that feels intuitive, seamless, and requires minimal cognitive effort. Beyond new algorithms, we also emphasize human-centered evaluation, trust, accessibility, and inclusive augmentation, with the goal of accelerating research that advances wearable computing into reliable, scalable, and equitable systems—technologies that truly co-evolve with users over time. Hello! We would like to remind you that the deadline to apply for our workshop - What is a neuron? - is due tomorrow, April 2nd! The goal of this series is to take a fresh look at the basic assumptions held in our field. In the first workshop, we will ask the most fundamental question: *What is a neuron? *What properties should a cell have to be defined as such? An answer to this question may seem obvious at first: it has to be a cell that uses electrical signals, is connected to other neurons by synapses, and has extended processes—axons and dendrites. But the deeper we dig, the more challenging counterexamples we encounter: clearly non-neural cells using action potentials; neurons without axons or dendrites; or whole nerve nets in jellyfish that form a syncytium. And what defines a neuron during development, and how do its developmental pathways differ from those of other cells? Can we draw clear boundaries between neural and non-neural states? Things are no easier in an artificial neural network: what exactly is a processing unit in an ANN? How does it correspond to a biological neuron, and what can we learn from these models? The aim of this workshop is to look closely at different ways of defining a biological or artificial neuron and try to have a fresh look at our basic assumptions. This workshop will be held in the spirit of our Schools of Ideas—with an informal atmosphere, open exchange of thoughts and perspectives, in-depth talks, and plenty of space for discussion. Whether choosing to leave one shop for another, switching TV programs, or seeking berries to eat, humans and other animals make endless stay-or-leave decisions, but how we make them is not well understood. The goal of this project is to find out if there is a common decision algorithm for leaving across species and what that algorithm is. You will create predictions for how foragers should vary in their stay-of-leave decisions for different types of decision algorithm, and test them using data from humans and rodents tackling foraging tasks. You will have some experience in computational modelling of behaviour, such as decision-making models or reinforcement learning, and good programming skills. Postdoctoral Position in Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience: Flexible, Theory-Driven Research Program on Human Perception and Cognition We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position in our lab at Boston University, directed by Rob Reinhart (website: https://reinhartlab.org/) Our work focuses on the computational and neural mechanisms of human perception and cognition. This position is supported by fully flexible research resources, offering an unusually high degree of freedom to co-develop a research program that most excites the postdoc and draws deeply on their expertise, in close intellectual partnership with the PI. The lab is fundamentally a basic science training environment, oriented toward building representational computational accounts of cognition. Our central goal is not merely to describe behavior and its correlates, but to identify and test the internal representations and operations that constitute the cognitive phenotype, and to articulate the causal mechanisms by which these representations are implemented in neural systems. Research Approach Our work aims to integrate: (1) Causal perturbation of neural systems, including high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) and temporal interference (TI) stimulation, to directly test mechanistic hypotheses. (2) Computational modeling across levels, including: Electric field models, Formal and normative models, Cognitive models, Neural spiking models and neural mass models. (3) Rich, theory-driven experimental design, using behavioral measures (e.g., psychophysics, eye movements) that feed directly into computational models, with behavior serving as a window into latent representational structure rather than an endpoint of interest. (4) Human neuroscience methods, including EEG and fMRI, integrated with perturbation and modeling. (5) Advanced machine learning and multivariate analysis, including representational similarity analysis (RSA), multivariate decoding and encoding models, pattern component modeling (PCM), cross-validated model comparison, dimensionality-reduction and manifold-learning methods, regularized and probabilistic models, and related techniques for interrogating representational geometry and latent structure in neural and behavioral data. Intellectual Environment The lab values theoretical clarity, mechanistic explanation, and close coupling between experiment and model. We are especially interested in candidates who think carefully about: (1) What representations are being computed? (2) What operations transform them? (3) How these computations are implemented neurally. (4) How causal perturbation constrains theory. The postdoc will have substantial latitude to shape the direction of their research, develop new paradigms or modeling approaches, and pursue questions that cut across cognition, computation, and neuroscience. Qualifications We welcome applicants from a broad range of academic backgrounds relevant to the study of cognition, including cognitive neuroscience, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics. Applicants with strong theoretical and computational training from related fields such as physics, applied mathematics, or computer science who are motivated to translate this expertise to questions in cognitive neuroscience are also encouraged to apply. Training and Career Development This position is designed as a launchpad for independent academic research careers, with the goal of preparing scholars for tenure-track faculty positions at R01 universities. Training emphasizes intellectual ownership, methodological breadth, and rigorous theoretical foundations, with close mentorship paired with strong encouragement to develop a distinctive research identity. The Reinhart Laboratory is embedded within a highly interdisciplinary research environment at Boston University, with connections spanning human neuroscience, electrophysiology, and computational neuroscience across Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Dr. Reinhart holds a secondary appointment in Biomedical Engineering and is an active member of multiple interdisciplinary research centers that support cross-field collaboration and independent research development. The lab is affiliated with the Center for Research in Sensory Communication and Emerging Neural Technology (CReSCNT) and the Center for Systems Neuroscience (CSN), which together foster collaborative, theory-driven research linking neural mechanisms to behavior, computational modeling, and technological innovation. The Tchumatchenko Group is seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to conduct research in the field of computational neuroscience. We work at the intersection between mathematics and biology and use both pen-and-paper calculations as well numerical simulations and data analysis methods. The choice of the methods is driven by the topic at hand which is often a question related to the circuit-level function of neural networks and synaptic dynamics. Our group is one of the leading computational neuroscience teams in Europe and obtained competitive prizes and third-party funding from several funding sources and has a track record of successful theses and research papers completed by mathematics/physics students that did not have prior exposure to biology. The projects you could work on could focus on a mathematical study of multiple attractors, time series analysis, numerical fitting procedures or involve tool development in python for the analysis of neural activity data. On the most applied end, machine learning applications to image segmentation (mRNA and protein) and analyses of behavioral tracking data are conducted in our group. PhD position at the University of Antwerp

Hello All, Daniele Bertoglio and I are looking for a motivated PhD candidate to work on an exciting new project at the Bio-Imaging Lab, University of Antwerp. The project aims to longitudinally study the beneficial effects of non-invasive multisensory stimulation at gamma frequency (40Hz) on brain function, brain clearance, and behaviour in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The project entails the acquisition of resting-state fMRI, intravoxel incoherent motion MRI, SynVesT-1-PET, and Tau-PET data, as well as computational and statistical analyses to link the imaging and behavioral readouts of the effect of this therapeutic strategy.
