Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025

Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of this seminal paper, Biological Cybernetics invites submissions to a special article collection on the topic “Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025.” Whether you have contributed to past research in this area and would like to write a retrospective review, or if you are actively pursuing new research building on spike timing, we encourage you to submit an article to this collection. PhD and postdoc positions in accelerator design for computational neuroscience

Dear all, We are inviting applications for one PhD and one postdoc position in accelerator design for computational neuroscience and asynchronous digital hardware as part of a joint project between the Neuro-inspired Theory, Modeling and Applications (NeuroTMA) Lab led by Mihai A. Petrovici at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Asynchronous VLSI and Architecture (AVLSI) Lab led by Rajit Manohar at Yale University, USA. The NeuroTMA Lab focuses on biologically inspired models of spatio-temporal processing in recurrent cortical networks and their relation to reinforcement learning, Bayesian computing, and neuromorphic implementations. The AVLSI Lab conducts research on semantics, design methodologies, and architectures for asynchronous systems with the goal of designing and implementing efficient and programmable computation structures. The project will develop an accelerator for the simulation of cortical models of processing and learning. Post-doc position in the UCL Human Electrophysiology Lab

Hello all, A post-doctoral research position is available in my lab<https://bushlab-ucl.github.io/> at the UCL Department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology, funded for two and a half years in the first instance. This position is part of an EPSRC project investigating the neural mechanisms of human memory function. The project will focus on collecting and analysing intracranial EEG and single cell recordings from epilepsy patients and MEG recordings from healthy volunteers completing spatial and episodic memory tasks, in conjunction with computational modelling. Candidates must have a PhD (or be studying towards it) in science, engineering, maths or a relevant subject area that incorporates some aspect of neuroscience, and proven knowledge of computer programming (using Matlab, Python, or C++). Experience of collecting and analysing rodent electrophysiology, human EEG and / or MEG data is also essential. Neuroinformatics Unit Open Software Week, in London this August

We’re pleased to announce the first Neuroinformatics Unit Open Software Week <https://neuroinformatics.dev/open-software-week> at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre <https://www.sainsburywellcome.org/web/> in *London* this *August 11-15*.This event will bring together researchers, developers, and users of *open-source neuroscience software* for some hands-on training, community-building and hacking. There will be three main tracks: 1. *Animals in motion*: using open-source tools to track and analyse animal motion from video footage 2. *BrainGlobe*: using the BrainGlobe ecosystem of computational neuroanatomy tools to analyse whole-brain microscopy datasets 3. *Big Imaging Data*: bridging technical gaps and communities to process and analyse large 3D imaging datasets with open-source tools There will also be a series of satellite events: - Introduction to Python - Alternative research careers clinic - Collaborative coding with Git - Hackday The event is free to all, but spots are limited. Postdoctoral positions -- modeling of dopamine in rhythm perception

*[Information here is similar to a previous posting, but our search is now focused on postdoctoral modelers, with an emphasis on negotiable salary]*McMaster University, Hamilton Ontario The METRE lab (Models and Experiments in Timing, Rhythm, and Entrainment, metre.mcmaster.ca), led by Jonathan Cannon (joncannon.net) is initiating a collaboration with Dan Bang’s group at University of Aarhus, Denmark, funded by the Human Frontier Science Program. The project will collect electrophysiological and electrochemical data from human basal ganglia during deep brain stimulator implantations while patients listen to and entrain movement to auditory rhythms. Data will be used to evaluate and develop models of the role of dopamine in rhythm perception, movement, and prediction. Dr. Cannon is looking to welcome at least one postdoctoral researcher *as soon as possible* to develop both neurophysiological and interpretive (Bayesian predictive processing, reinforcement learning) models of rhythm perception.
