Northwestern University’s Human Olfaction Lab is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to join their research team. The lab studies systems neuroscience, including the human olfactory system, cognition and respiration. The lab uses a wide range of human neuroscience methods, including functional neuroimaging, diffusion tensor imaging, intracranial EEG, electrical stimulation, and a new intranasal recording method that we recently developed that allows for high-precision electrophysiological recordings from the human olfactory bulb in healthy volunteers, and fast-scan-cyclic voltammetry based electrochemistry recordings from the olfactory epithelium. The lab is conducting experiments in healthy normosmic individuals, and also in disease populations including Anosmia, Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s and epilepsy. We are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated postdoc for this position. Principal Accountabilities 1. To conduct and analyze data from experiments on olfaction, respiration, cognition and or disease. 2. To develop new ideas, research methodologies, and analytic approaches to our lab’s research programs. 3. To help write grants and compete for funding. 4. To help write and contribute to publications resulting from research in the lab. Minimum Qualifications/Competencies: * Interest in research on olfaction and/or respiration and/or how these systems are affected in disease. * Computational skills (machine learning, RSA, pattern analysis, k-means clustering, modeling, etc) in analyzing neural data, preferably across a range of techniques including electrophysiology and neuroimaging. * Evidence of first-author peer-reviewed publications. * Excellent communication and writing skills Preferred Qualifications/Competencies: * Experience in human neuroscience research. * Experience in research and clinical training related to neurological conditions are preferred, but not a necessity. * Skillsets on computational, AI (broadly defined), and data science analytic approaches are an advantage. Description of position: We are seeking a Data Aide 2 to join the laboratory of Dr. Supekar and support data organization, database management, and neuroimaging data preparation across multiple NIH-funded projects at the intersection of neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and precision psychiatry. The Supekar lab integrates neuroscience and artificial intelligence (AI) to advance understanding of brain function and the mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders. Through rigorous research and clinically oriented translation, we develop evidence-based innovations to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for individuals affected by mental illness. The Data Aide will work closely with and under the direct oversight of Dr. Supekar on supporting the organization, management, and preparation of large-scale neuroimaging, clinical, cognitive, and molecular datasets focused on autism and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. This is a full-time, in-person, computationally oriented role centered on data organization, database management, and neuroimaging data preparation. Core responsibilities include maintaining and managing REDCap databases, organizing and structuring neuroimaging data files for use in analysis, and ensuring data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across studies. The position offers hands-on experience supporting research at the intersection of neuroimaging, data science, and precision psychiatry, with close mentorship from the PI. Dear Colleagues, We're pleased to announce a postdoctoral position within the Computational Systems Neuroscience Group (CSNG) at Charles University, Prague, focusing on computational neuroscience and neuro-prosthetic system design. CSNG is an international, interdisciplinary research group that explores the intricacies of the visual system, sensory coding, and neuro-prosthetic solutions. To do this, we use a range of computational approaches spanning large-scale biologically detailed spiking network models, firing-rate models of development, and modern machine learning techniques. We are a diverse team of computer scientists, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers dedicated to understanding visual perception and its restoration via neuro-prosthetic devices. Multiple project topics are available (the exact topic can be adjusted to the interest and background of the applicant): - Modeling electrical stimulation in a spiking model of the primary visual cortex. The goal of this project is to understand how intra-cortical stimulation engages the neural code of the visual cortex. - Deep-neural networks in visual neuroscience and possibly its applications for understanding of visual perception under artificial cortical stimulation. - Study of cortical dynamics of spontaneous or artificially evoked activity in the visual cortex. - Biologically detailed spiking large-scale models of early visual cortical pathway - from Retina to V4. One example is when you decide where to have lunch: should you go to the nearby coffee shop or to the university cafeteria? Learning depends on choice, because you can learn which option you prefer by trying each option repeatedly, and decision making depends on learning, because you eventually want to select the option you have learned you like best. Uncertainty plays a key role in both learning1–4 and decision making5, especially when the environment is not stationary (e.g., a new brand now runs the nearby coffee shop and you like it less). In the ANR/CEA-funded BrainSync collaborative project, we are interested in characterizing the neural representations of uncertainty6–8 and value that emerge from learning and guide decisions. Our approach combines deep phenotyping approach and multimodal imaging in the EXPLORE task5. We collected data from 16 participants who participated in one behavioral session, two 7T fMRI sessions, and two MEG sessions. 56 other participants participated in one pupillometry session and one 3T fMRI session. We also plan to record a dataset on our 11.7T MRI, and we have started to collect intracranial EEG data. This large multimodal dataset allows us to estimate and test different computational models of the decision and learning processes. One postdoc is currently working on the MEG and iEEG data, and one PhD student is working on the behavioral and 11.7T data (to be collected). We are looking for another postdoc for the already collected fMRI datasets. The postdocs and PhD student will work together to perform analyses informed by all datasets. *Profile* Ph.D. in neuroscience, machine learning or psychology, with strong programming skills, ideally in Python. Previous experience with ideally fMRI, computational modeling. You will be responsible for analyzing fMRI data and disseminating results in internal seminars, international conferences and journal articles. The working language of the lab is English. The emergence of spontaneous activity during cortical development Labs of Geoff Goodhill and Linda Richards Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis We are looking for a Postdoc or Graduate student to analyze and model the emergence of early patterns of spontaneous neural activity in developing cortex. We are interested in questions such as whether functionally distinct areas show common or distinct initial activity patterns, and how these patterns relate to subsequent function. This project is based on data from the dunnart (an Australian marsupial), an animal model which offers unique advantages over rodents for studying early activity since dunnarts are born at a much earlier stage of brain development. Our initial work on this project is described in https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2208654120. We are now using 2-photon imaging of soma-targeted GCaMP8m which offers data with much higher resolution and detail. The postdoc/student will work between the Goodhill and Richards labs, which are both located in a new 60,000 m^2 building dedicated entirely to neuroscience research which opened in 2023. However, our ability to monitor the microcircuitry in living humans is limited, meriting the use of detailed computational simulations to overcome experimental limitations in linking the microcircuit mechanisms with altered cortical activity, functional deficits and biomarkers in clinically-relevant brain signals. This workshop will showcase the latest efforts from leading groups in large-scale neuronal microcircuit modeling of spiking activity and signals such as EEG and MEG. The workshop will present diverse data-driven microcircuit modeling approaches that integrate neuronal, synaptic and functional data, and the different simulation tools used to generate activity and brain signals from the models. The workshop will highlight clinical applications of the models in establishing target mechanisms for treatment, and estimating microcircuit mechanisms from clinical signals in patient data with machine learning to improve diagnosis. Postdoc position in the Unit on the Neural Computations in Learning, NIMH

We have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to join my lab in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Mental Health at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Research in the lab is focused on the computational neuroscience of reward prediction and learning. Broadly, we study how timing, inference processes and goal selection modulate learning in reward-guided tasks in animals and humans, and how these processes are supported by neural activity in the reward learning circuits of the brain. Our goal is to understand how reward learning is altered in compulsive behaviors, addiction, and motivational deficits in disorders of mental health. We are looking for a postdoc who will use approaches from dynamical systems theory, reinforcement learning and Bayesian inference to understand how goal-directed behaviors and learning are regulated in neural circuits. The ideal candidate thinks about reward prediction and learning as dynamic processes unfolding in time and across experience, is fluent in both the theoretical and empirical approaches used in systems, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, and aims to link normative models of behavior to the dynamics of neural populations in the reward learning circuits of the brain. We are a computational group that works with a broad network of collaborating labs spanning rodent, NHP and human studies, and would suit a computational neuroscientist excited to work at the intersection of theory and experiment in an interdisciplinary research environment. Re: vision: a community-driven replication initiative for image-related neuroscience

Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce re:vision, a community-driven initiative for replicating and generalizing findings in image-related neuroscience and we'd love for you to take part. Condition-rich fMRI datasets have transformed how we study visual representations, but they rest on two assumptions: that their stimuli sample natural images broadly, and that findings generalize across that distribution. These assumptions are rarely tested directly. re:vision sets out to change that. The initiative is built on the new LAION-fMRI dataset: densely-sampled 7T fMRI responses to 25,000+ natural images, designed to cover the space of natural images at exceptional scale and diversity. Participants pick a published finding, replicate it using LAION-fMRI, and test whether it holds and generalizes. No new data collection is required, all data, preprocessed betas, and annotations are provided through our Python package. Anyone with an interest in neuroscience can participate in teams of 1 - 3 researchers. From the PI that wants to get their hands dirty again to the master's student looking for a thesis project. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team in Surrey and Oxford, and with collaborators across the ASAP Collaborative Research Network (CRN), an international, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional network working to address high-priority research questions about Parkinson's disease, supported by ASAP, in partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). The role We are seeking an outstanding Research Fellow to help spearhead research to understand the relationship between EEG-defined oscillations during sleep and excessive sleepiness during the daytime in people living with Parkinson's and to develop and implement neuromodulation approaches to alleviate daytime sleepiness. The project is funded by Aligning Science Across Parkinson's and the William J. Fox Foundation, and will be conducted at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey. The research is part of a collaborative effort between researchers at the Universities of Surrey, Oxford, Harvard and Zurich. The successful applicant will, together with other researchers and clinical staff members, be responsible for conducting the clinical research protocol, analyses of EEG and behavioural data, delivering neuromodulation interventions, and preparing publications. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Neuroscience or related subject area, have experience in clinical neuroscience research and have excellent data analysis and programming skills. The successful applicant will be an active member of the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, and is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at Oxford, Harvard and Zurich. About you Crucial skills include EEG analysis and programming. Desirable skills are prior experience of working with human participants patients, particularly those with Parkinson's, dementia, or other cognitive disorders, experience in assessing cognitive function using standardised and experimental tasks, conducting non-invasive brain stimulation and/or EEG recording procedures. However, the role involves substantial training to bring the research fellow to the highest level of competence in those research approaches. Postdoctoral position available in an ERC-funded project exploring deep-learning implementations of the Global Workspace theory. We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated post-doc to join our group in Toulouse, France in the Fall/Winter of 2026. The successful candidate will have a PhD and formal training in AI, Computer Science or related fields (e.g. computational neuroscience), and a keen interest in cognitive neuroscience. Our ERC Advanced Grant "GLoW" (2023-2028) aims to take inspiration from neuroscience and cognitive theories to build deep neural network models of cognition, capable of integrating or "grounding" information across sensory and linguistic modalities, and of displaying flexible cognitive behavior. Responsibilities The successful candidate will: * Research, design, develop, and evaluate generative AI models for mental health applications. * Deploy and use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to constrain large language models (LLMs) and multimodal AI systems. * Conduct research using large-scale clinical, behavioral, and linguistic datasets. * Utilize Empire AI computing resources for model training, evaluation, and deployment. * Develop methods for responsible, ethical, and explainable AI in healthcare settings. * Collaborate with clinicians, mental health researchers, software engineers, and data scientists. * Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences. * Contribute to grant proposals and research dissemination activities. * Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in AI and mental health research. * Support partnerships with international collaborators focused on global mental health innovation. Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary research group studying how the primate brain controls real-time, natural behavior in dynamic environments. Different projects address how we specify and plan potential actions such as reaching under changing conditions as we move through our environment, decide between actions even during ongoing behavior, control and learn to execute movements in different behavioral contexts (e.g., body stationary vs. in motion) and integrate multisensory cues to estimate and keep track of our motion through space. Research in our group involves single- and multi-electrode neural recording experiments in non-human primates, human behavioral studies using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and galvanic vestibular stimulation, and computational modeling of the nervous system. New collaborative projects will combine use of sophisticated spatial motion systems and virtual reality environments to study naturalistic behavior in both humans and non-human primates and develop computational models of real-time action selection, planning and control. Machine implementation of this principle began with electro-mechanical machines in the 1930s, and the earliest idea for computer implementation was probably Turing’s 1948 proposal of a computer implementation of a “pleasure-pain system”. In this talk I review what has followed Turing’s unimplemented proposal, starting with the first computer experiments in 1954, up to what we now know as modern computational RL. Short Bio: Andrew Barto is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science, University of Massachusetts Amherst, having retired in 2012. He served as Chair of the UMass Department of Computer Science from 2007 to 2011. He received a B.S. with distinction in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1970, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1975, also from the University of Michigan. He joined the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1977. Before retiring he co-directed the Autonomous Learning Laboratory at UMass Amherst, which produced many notable machine learning researchers. Professor Barto is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a Fellow and Life Member of the IEEE. He received the 2004 IEEE Neural Network Society Pioneer Award for contributions to the field of reinforcement learning, the IJCAI-17 Award for Research Excellence for groundbreaking and impactful research in both the theory and application of reinforcement learning, and a University of Massachusetts Neurosciences Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Most recently, he and his former doctoral student, Richard Sutton, were co-recipients of the 2024 Association for Computing Machinery’s A.M. Turing Award for developing the conceptual and algorithmic foundations of reinforcement learning, and he and Sutton received the 2026 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award for contributions to reinforcement learning and artificial intelligence. He has published over one hundred papers or chapters in journals, books, and conference and workshop proceedings. He is co-author with Sutton of "Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction," MIT Press, 1998. A much expanded second edition was published in 2018. In this lecture, I will revisit the classical question of spine biophysics in the new age of connectomics, where nanometer-resolution electron microscopy allows us to reconstruct whole neurons with thousands of synapses and spines. I will show how spine density, spine-neck resistance, and the irregular geometry of individual spines can shape local synaptic signals, generate fast voltage dynamics, influence excitatory/inhibitory gating, and affect communication between neighboring spines. I will then discuss how automated reconstruction pipelines and biophysical modeling now make it possible to build digital neurons at spine and synapse resolution, and how AI-based approaches, such as our new AI-based TwinProp algorithm, allow us to ask - and get answer - to a fundamental question: what can a neuron compute? Graduate student and postdoctoral positions are available in the Active Perception Laboratory (http://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu) at the University of Rochester to study the perceptual consequences of eye movements under the supervision of Dr. Martina Poletti and/or Dr. Michele Rucci. We are particularly interested in recruiting candidates interested in investigating the roles of eye movements in establishing spatial representations, the spatiotemporal dynamics of foveal and extrafoveal processing, the interplay between eye movements, retinal anatomy, and attention, and the possible roles of eye movements in emmetropization and myopia. Research in the laboratory focuses on the interaction between vision and behavior. Our work relies on the integration of theoretical and experimental approaches to investigate how visual functions unfold in the presence of normal and abnormal motor activity, how vision guides behavior, and how changes in visual input signals and modulations associated with behavior contribute to perception. The laboratory is equipped with a unique array of tools, many developed in-house, to investigate the synergy between visual, motor, and cognitive processes (https://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu/facilities.html#<https://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu/facilities.html>). Approaches include human psychophysics with precisely controlled retinal stimulation, computational modeling, precise measurements of head and eye movements, high-resolution retinal imaging, and electroencephalography (EEG) during active vision. In this talk, I will discuss how cortical circuits organize neural activity and connectivity across spatial scales, from local microcircuits to distributed cortex-wide networks. Using naturalistic multidirectional reaching in mice, combined with large-scale calcium imaging and causal connectivity mapping of >20,000,000 neuronal pairs, we identified connectivity motifs and population dynamics underlying goal-directed behavior. I will first describe the organizational principles of the motor cortex, where neurons are arranged into functional mini-columns with recurrent connectivity motifs linked to task-related activity, and discuss the potential computational advantages of this architecture. I will then show how these principles extend to larger spatial scales. Imaging ~1,000,000 neurons across 10 cortical regions revealed high-dimensional local population activity patterns alongside coordinated cortex-wide dynamics mediated by synchronized inter-areal communication. These distributed network dynamics supported high-dimensional representations of short-term memory for target location. Dear all, We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Translational Imaging Biomarkers Lab at the Institute of Neurosciences (CSIC–UMH, Alicante, Spain), working Dr. Maximilian Eggl and collaborating with Dr. Silvia De Santis. The position is fully funded for 3 years (with possible extension) and has an expected start date in Autumn 2026. Our research combines mathematics, machine learning, neuroimaging, and neuroscience to develop innovative computational tools for understanding brain health and disease. Current research directions include AI-inspired biomarkers of brain structure and function, simulation-based inference, quantitative MRI, computational neuroscience, and mechanistic modelling of biological systems. The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment at the interface of neuroscience, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and medical imaging. The exact project will be tailored to the interests and background of the successful candidate. Applicants should have (or be close to obtaining) a Master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as applied mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, data science, computational neuroscience, or a related field. We are pleased to announce a one-day meeting (a CCN 2026 <https://2026.ccneuro.org/> satellite event) on 1st August 2026 in New York: COMPUTATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS SCIENCE A recent explosion of interest in computational models of consciousness comes both from our attempts to extend computational models of perception and cognition to their subjective aspects and from the importance of consciousness to the ethical implications of AI models. This satellite meeting examines computational approaches from the points of view of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, with keynotes from David Chalmers (philosophy), Marisa Carrasco (psychology), and Biyu He (neuroscience). There will also be research talks from faculty, postdocs, and PhDs highlighting the contribution of computational models to our understanding of change-blindness, iconic memory, spatial perception, and visual illusions, as well as helping us to develop new measures of conscious awareness. A closing panel discussion will explore new and future directions for the emerging discipline of computational consciousness science. The goal of the project is to develop and simulate large-scale neural network models of the brain’s cognitive function with focus on cortical memory system, and use them to make advances towards brain-like intelligent systems. Special focus is on coupling multiple neural networks to study neural interactions between different cortical regions supporting cognitive function. How prefrontal dynamics reorganize to support such composition when task demands compete within a shared neural population remains unclear. Here, we developed a dual-task paradigm in mice that combined a delayed paired-association (DPA) task with an olfactory Go/No-Go (GNG) discrimination embedded in the delay period. Mice learned the dual task rapidly, with early errors dominated by false alarms on unpaired DPA trials. Interference was asymmetric: Go cues disrupted performance more than No-Go cues, pinpointing premature action rather than memory failure as the central learning bottleneck. Population calcium imaging from medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) showed that sample identity, choice tendency, and test identity occupied near-orthogonal subspaces of a shared low-dimensional manifold. As training progressed, sample representations remained stable while delay-period activity shifted away from the action-associated region. To probe the underlying circuit mechanisms, we trained low-rank recurrent neural networks on the same paradigm. Networks developed a circular manifold on which memories were stored as attractors at distinct angular positions, and test stimuli acted as compositional rotation operators, routing stored memories to appropriate actions. Dual-task training relocated mnemonic attractors to a position that a reduced geometric model identified as Pareto-optimal—revealing a fundamental tradeoff in which optimizing one task necessarily impairs the other. Consistently, optogenetic inhibition of ACC→mPFC projections during the delay displaced attractor geometry and selectively biased DPA versus GNG accuracy, matching the reduced model's prediction. Together, our results reveal how prefrontal circuits dynamically reshape attractor geometry through learning-dependent attractor fine-tuning, providing a mechanistic framework for how cortex resolves competing cognitive demands. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Remarkably high turnover rates in neural connectivity have been observed under baseline conditions, and these rates increase even more significantly in response to stimulation or perturbation. However, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms and biological function of this drastic form of brain plasticity. Since direct experiments on connectivity at the synaptic level are notoriously difficult to conduct and analyze, formal models are crucial for predicting and understanding the emergent properties of networks (or graphs) with highly dynamic structures. Building on our previous work on homeostatic structural plasticity, we have developed a new model of self-organizing networks based on the “directed configuration model.” It exhibits Hebbian plasticity (“neurons that fire together wire together”) and engram formation without specific molecular mechanisms. I will also discuss possible connections with psychological phenomena such as classical conditioning, extinction, and blocking, and describe new machine learning strategies based on self-organizing networks that can be derived from our biologically motivated theory. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The position focuses on developing interpretable AI and computational modeling frameworks to study fundamental questions in neuroscience. The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects integrating neural recordings, dynamical systems models, recurrent neural networks, and modern AI approaches to study cognition, neural dynamics, and motor control. The Open Science in Practice Summer School is a 5-day immersive programme held in Cambridge (UK), bringing together students and early-career researchers interested in integrating open science into their daily work. Yet their dynamics are difficult to study directly, because high-dimensional nonlinear systems can exhibit rich behavior that is hard to summarize in terms of individual trajectories. In this talk, I will discuss an approach that seeks to understand such dynamics through the structure of the network’s equilibria. I will focus on a random balanced network of threshold-linear units that undergoes a transition from a single stable equilibrium to extensive chaos as the disorder strength crosses a critical value. Using a combination of Kac–Rice theory, replica calculations, numerical root-finding, and dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the chaotic regime contains an exponentially large number of equilibria. These equilibria are all saddles, but with only a fractionally small number of unstable directions. Surprisingly, despite the completely random connectivity, the equilibria are not scattered randomly through phase space. Instead, they are strongly correlated and confined to a comparatively small region. The chaotic attractor lies within this same region, suggesting a direct geometric link between the organization of unstable equilibria and the collective structure of the dynamics. This picture helps explain why networks with extensive chaos can nevertheless display dynamics dominated by a relatively small number of collective modes. Its agenda is to link formal (mathematical) descriptions of dynamical systems to a description of perception in terms of beliefs and goals. The argument has two parts: the first calls on the lawful dynamics of any (weakly mixing) ergodic system – from a single cell organism to a human brain. These lawful dynamics suggest that (internal) states can be interpreted as modelling or predicting the (external) causes of sensory fluctuations. In other words, if a system exists, its internal states must encode probabilistic beliefs about external states. Heuristically, this means that if I exist (am) then I must have beliefs (think). The second part of the argument is that the only tenable beliefs I can entertain about myself are that I exist. This may seem rather obvious; however, it transpires that this is equivalent to believing that the world – and the way it is sampled – will resolve uncertainty about the causes of sensations. We will consider the implications for functional anatomy, in terms of predictive coding and hierarchical architectures, and conclude by looking at the epistemic behaviour that emerges – using simulations of active inference. - SPEAKER: *Karl J. He invented statistical parametric mapping (SPM), voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and dynamic causal modelling (DCM). These contributions were motivated by schizophrenia research and theoretical studies of value-learning, formulated as the dysconnection hypothesis of schizophrenia. Mathematical contributions include Variational Laplace and generalized filtering for hierarchical Bayesian model inversion. Friston currently works on models of functional integration in the human brain and the principles that underlie neuronal interactions. His main contribution to theoretical neurobiology is a free-energy principle for action and perception (active inference). Friston received the first Young Investigators Award in Human Brain Mapping (1996) and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1999). In 2000 he was President of the international Organization of Human Brain Mapping. In 2003 he was awarded the Minerva Golden Brain Award and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. For example, researchers often model human behavior on bandit tasks using variants of Q-learning. While this approach has been highly productive, leading to landmark discoveries such as the dopamine reward prediction error hypothesis, it also has limitations. This talk focuses on the lack of generalizability of such models: Even if they closely fit behavior on the original task, models derived from the one-task-one-model paradigm usually predict behavior on other tasks quite poorly. I argue that this lack of generalizability is a fundamental problem for the cognitive sciences: we intuitively expect our models to be robust to superficial task differences, such as variations in the number of choice options, reward probabilities, or the exact kind of non-stationarity. I will propose potential solutions to this problem along two dimensions: the behavioral dataset and the computational model. Regarding computational models, I will introduce work in which we moved beyond the limitations of hand-crafted one-off models by employing flexible, data-driven methods. These methods allowed us to compare classes of models instead of individual model instances, allowing us to cover the space of possible models more exhaustively, and innovate cognitive mechanisms very efficiently. For the behavioral dataset, we move from using single learning tasks to a comprehensive task space that encompasses most existing paradigms in the literature, while closing the gaps between them in a near-continuous fashion. The National Institute for Theory and Mathematics MathBio Ideathon will take place August 10–12, 2026 in Chicago! The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers with interests at the interface of biology and mathematics to tackle unsolved problems through interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants will share their expertise via lightning talks and form vertically integrated teams (PIs and trainees) around the most promising ideas. The teams will tackle these problems and formulate actionable research plans. Teams will have the opportunity to continue their work to solve these problems at a later date through NITMB's Focused Research Award Program. It is based on spiking, event-driven architectures in which memory and computation are closely integrated. Neuromorphic chips have already shown several promising advantages over conventional von Neumann architectures, particularly in terms of energy efficiency. This workshop will explore the theoretical foundations of neuromorphic computing, with a focus on algorithms and computational complexity. Although the hardware has developed rapidly, the theory has not kept pace. Our aim is to create a forum for discussion on rigorous models of neuromorphic systems, allowing researchers to study their computational power and compare them with classical models of computation. Relating these patterns to the structure of the network is a central goal of theoretical neuroscience. Classic neural field and rate models have been powerful tools for this purpose due to their analytical tractability. Here, we show that the recently-developed combinatorial threshold-linear network (CTLN) model is a mean-field theory for excitatory-inhibitory Hawkes networks, with clustered connectivity, in an inhibition-stabilized regime. This mapping allows us to leverage powerful analytical results for CTLN networks to predict diverse macroscopic dynamics of clustered Hawkes networks, including metastability between various macroscopic fixed points, limit cycles, and chaotic attractors. We will then examine an extension of this approach to models with nonlinear dendritic dynamics, focusing on dendritic calcium spikes.We uncover a marked point process mean-field theory for these networks and use this to examine how somatic vs dendritic-targeting connectivity shapes the mean-field equilibrium phase diagram. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Dear all, The Neuromodulation Institute (Paris) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (full-time, 2-year contract with the possibility of extension) to join a human brain–computer interface project led by Philippe Domenech <http://computationalbrainteam.com/en/people> (Neuromodulation Institute, Paris) in direct collaboration with João Barbosa <http://jbarbosa.org/> (Neuromodulation Institute, Paris) and Guillaume Bellec <http://guillaume.bellec.eu/> (Technical University of Vienna). The work will be carried out in the center of Paris and the newly created Neuromodulation Institute. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. About the Project This position is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration involving computational neuroscientists, clinicians, and engineers. The goal is to establish model-driven, multi-site stimulation experiments in human patients and move towards novel therapies for psychiatric disorders through the control of human brain dynamics via closed-loop stimulation. As an initial step toward these broader goals, the postdoctoral researcher will work with electrophysiological data collected from epilepsy patients implanted with ~124 intracranial LFP electrodes, enabling simultaneous recording and multi-site stimulation. We already collected several datasets (open-loop) and up to 4 subjects are collected per month through a national network of clinicians. The work carried out by the successful applicant will sit at the intersection of machine learning, computational neuroscience and data analyses of human intracranial electrophysiology. The medium-term ambition is to expand this work to additional patient populations, including individuals with treatment-resistant major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and to incorporate recording techniques such as large-scale multi-unit activity and sub-second neuromodulation (e.g. dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, etc) detection using ML-augmented voltammetry. Key responsibilities include developing data-driven state-space models of neural dynamics for optimal control policies for stimulation as well as inference pipelines for predicting network responses of intracranial recordings. The position emphasizes computational modeling, theory, and algorithmic development, rather than hands-on experimental data collection. Candidate Profile We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong quantitative and computational skills, and demonstrated research experience in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, simulation-based inference, reinforcement learning, generative/diffusion models and dynamical systems. Required Skills and Experience - Strong scientific programming skills in Python, in particular proficiency in PyTorch, Jax or related - Demonstrated experience in machine learning - Excellent written and spoken English. - Direct experimental experience is not required. However, the successful candidate should be enthusiastic about interacting with clinicians, neurosurgeons, and patients during experimental planning and execution. Preferred but not required - Experience working with time series data, in particular intracranial recordings (LFP, ECoG, depth electrodes) in humans or other animals. OPM-FLUX Toolkit 2026 - Register now!

Dear all, We are delighted to announce that the OPM-FLUX toolkit will be held on the 13th-16th July 2026 at St. Catherine’s College at the University of Oxford! We encourage everyone who is interested in OPM-MEG data analysis to apply (ECRs and more senior researchers and clinicians included!). The OPM-FLUX toolkit course provides a comprehensive introduction to analysing OPM-MEG data using OPM-FLUX, an advanced analysis pipeline for human electrophysiological data. Originally designed for SQUID-based MEG, the FLUX pipeline has been adapted for OPM-MEG. While OPM-MEG offers exciting opportunities in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, analysing its data can be challenging due to technical complexities and a lack of standardised methods. To meet the increasing demand for accessible training in this area, we have developed the FLUX toolkit, built on MNE-Python, a leading MEG analysis toolbox. Participants will be taught the theoretical foundations of OPM sensors and human electrophysiology and gain practical experience with OPM FLUX. In the mornings we will have lectures on the basics of data analysis as well as examples on novel cognitive neuroscience research-based MEG or OPM-MEG. In the afternoon, we will have hands-on data analysis workshops applying the OPM-FLUX pipeline on a data set collected from the local OPM systems. Will cover the analysis of FieldLine as well Cerca/QuSpin data. The analysis sections will include the BIDS format, preprocessing, event-related fields, spectral analysis, source modelling, and multivariate pattern analysis. We will not provide hands-on training on the actual data acquisition, but we will outline the general steps required. Yet these ideas usually assume rhythms that are strong, sustained, and regular, whereas in vivo oscillations are often weak, transient, noisy, and variable in frequency and phase. In this talk, I will argue that such “no-metronome” oscillations are not just noisy fluctuations, but coordinated complex dynamics with functional consequences. Combining analyses of neural activity recordings during actual behavior (mice and non-human-primate LFPs and human EEG) with computational modelling, I will discuss evidence that transient oscillatory events can carry task-relevant information and support flexible communication through spatiotemporally structured relationships across populations, timescales, and frequencies. As part of the AISB conference to be held at the University of Sussex, UK, 1 to 2 July 2026 The conference is organised by The Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) http://www.aisb.org.uk/ OVERVIEW: The symposium will be a one-day session of talks, Q&A’s, and panel discussions, structured around two themes: foundations, and applications. Each session will open with a keynote speaker (45 min presentation +15 min Q&A), include up to four further talks (15-30 min slots), and will wrap up with a panel discussion and audience questions. Confirmed speakers: * Prof. Gualtiero Piccinini * Dr. Fernando Rosas * Dr. Kate Nave * Dr. Nathaniel Virgo TOPICS OF INTEREST 1- Foundations: Foundational debates concerning the nature of computational processes, the status of formal and physical models, and the relationship between abstraction and implementation - have been reopened by both theoretical developments and increasingly powerful real-world systems. Against this backdrop, the symposium’s foundations strand invites critical reflection on the conceptual terrain of computation, motivating the following guiding questions: • What makes a process computational? • Are classic distinctions between syntax and semantics, or implementational, algorithmic, and computational levels of description sound? • Is computation subjective or objective, abstract or concrete, mathematical or physical? • What are the limits of computation? Most existing research treats expectations as static, assuming they remain fixed in time. However, real-life expectations are often dynamic, fluctuating as new information becomes available. For example, during a soccer game, your expectations of seeing your team winning will likely rise and fall as the game unfolds. In the main part of this talk, I will present a series of studies demonstrating that human expectations can be tracked at sub-second timescales. Using slot machines as a case study, we leverage the continuous deceleration of the reels to elicit moment-by-moment fluctuations in reward expectations. To capture these dynamics, we take complementary approaches: we use the high temporal resolution of electroencephalography (EEG) to track neural signatures of evolving expectations, and we develop a novel behavioral paradigm (“Slot or Not”) designed to measure changes in expectations via betting behavior. Across four studies, we show that expectations fluctuate continuously and can be tracked both behaviorally and neurally. Extending these findings, a subsequent intracranial study shows that the human orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) encodes the moment-by-moment changes of reward expectations. In the second part of this talk, I will return to the relationship between expectations and satisfaction. If expectations shape satisfaction, and if they are best conceptualized as dynamic trajectories rather than static quantities, a key question arises: does the trajectory leading up to an outcome influence how that outcome is evaluated? I will outline a new research direction aimed at formalizing this relationship using computational modeling. This is ongoing work, and I welcome feedback on how best to formalize these ideas. Finally, I will discuss potential extensions of this framework to psychopathology, asking whether alterations in dynamic expectations may characterize conditions such as Major Depressive Disorder and Gambling disorder. Open Lab Online workshops on Bonsai – Module I sessions now open

We are happy to announce the *first Open Lab Online workshops *on *Bonsai*. *Bonsai* is an open-source reactive programming language that is particularly useful for modern behavioral neuroscience experiments. It allows users to synchronize multiple data streams, precisely deliver stimuli, and run experiments in closed-loop settings, while integrating signals and devices from different systems. From calcium imaging and sound recordings to sensors, feeders, motors, and stimulus delivery systems, Bonsai offers a flexible and powerful way to build experimental workflows. These workshops correspond to *Module I* of a *3-module online course of increasing difficulty*. In this first module, participants will be introduced to the basics of Bonsai — its logic, core principles, and potential applications. The workshop will also cover how to track animals during experiments, detect their presence in ROIs, run simple closed-loop paradigms, and perform basic logical operations. Dan Goodman About the role We are seeking a Research Assistant (a Masters graduate wanting to undertake a PhD) or Research Associate (a PhD graduate wanting to undertake a postdoc). Our aim is to explore new approaches to energy-efficient artificial intelligence based on temporal neural computation. The project investigates how spiking neural networks, temporal coding, and learned neural delays can enable accurate computation with extremely low-precision weights, potentially unlocking a new generation of ultra-efficient AI hardware. Working at the intersection of machine learning, computational neuroscience, and digital hardware design, the successful candidate will contribute to developing neural architectures in which time (spike timing and delays) replaces numerical precision and memory movement as the key computational resource. The project will combine algorithm development with hardware-aware modelling and evaluation on FPGA-based platforms. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help define new approaches to temporal neural computation and energy-efficient AI. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work on fundamental questions in neuromorphic and energy-efficient AI, while developing techniques that could translate into future AI accelerators and edge-AI technologies. The role will be affiliated with NeuroWare, the new national Innovation and Knowledge Centre in Neuromorphic Computation, providing the post-holder access to a rich network of industrial and academic collaborators and routes to direct impact. Pre-doctoral candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates appointed as Research Assistant will have the opportunity to register for a PhD during the appointment, subject to standard university procedures. What you would be doing In this role, you will investigate neural architectures that exploit temporal coding and learned delays to enable efficient computation on digital hardware. You will develop and evaluate spiking neural network models, explore training methods for delay-based computation, and analyse how temporal representations trade off with weight precision and memory usage. You will primarily be collaborating with three Imperial College academics: Prof Christos Bouganis, Prof George A. Constantinides and Dr Dan Goodman, who each bring leading expertise relevant to this research programme. You will implement models in software frameworks for neural simulation and machine learning, and work with hardware-aware efficiency metrics to evaluate energy, memory, and latency trade-offs. The project will also involve exploring how these architectures map to digital hardware platforms, including FPGA-based systems.
