Our platform makes behavioral analysis tools accessible for research and industry applications. Hello, We would like to remind you that there is just one week left for registration for our workshop, *Why are there neuroscientists?*, that will be held in Heidelberg on Dec 5t! We are going to discuss an intricate web of reasons that make us study the visual cortices of mice, the spatial cognition of bats, or the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease in humans, from long-time fascinations, through previous, often random choices, inspirations by other people, or economic/social circumstances. The aim of this short workshop will be to discuss in depth our reasons for doing neuroscience. The foundation of HNN is a biophysically-detailed neocortical model, representing a patch of neocortex receiving thalamic and corticocortical drive. The HNN model was designed to simulate the time course of primary current dipoles and enables direct comparison, in nAm units, to source-localized M/EEG data, along with layer-specific cellular activity. HNN workflows are constructed around simulating commonly measured ERPs and low-frequency oscillations. In this workshop, we will review the scientific foundations underlying the HNN model. Thereafter, will we walk through how to get started with HNN using NSG, and we will briefly demo various features of the HNN GUI. 9:35 – 10:05: AI-driven Brain Digital Twins: Large-scale biophysical models of neuronal circuits to study brain function and disease, Salvador Dura Bernal, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Abstract: Understanding brain function and disease requires studying interactions across multiple scales, from molecular and cellular mechanisms to circuit-wide dynamics and behavior. Biophysically detailed brain circuit models provide a powerful tool to integrate diverse experimental data across these scales, allowing researchers to simulate and analyze brain activity in a mechanistic and predictive manner. Leveraging AI and high-performance computing, we have developed large-scale, biologically realistic models of various thalamocortical circuits, including motor, somatosensory, and auditory regions, each comprising ~15,000 neurons and ~30 million synapses. These models incorporate experimentally derived neuronal morphologies, electrophysiological properties, and connectivity, enabling them to reproduce cell-type and layer-specific electrical activity patterns observed in vivo across scales, from membrane voltages and action potentials to local field potentials and electroencephalogram signals. Our models have been instrumental in elucidating the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying neurological disease and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, dystonia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease. They also offer insights into therapeutic targets to restore healthy neural dynamics through novel pharmacological and neurostimulation treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). These mechanistic models provide the foundation for constructing AI-driven Brain Digital Twins—virtual replicas of an individual’s brain state that integrate multimodal patient data to simulate brain function, predict disease progression, and optimize personalized treatment strategies. By bridging mechanistic modeling of brain circuits and AI, Brain Digital Twins have the potential to transform diagnosis, prevention and treatment of neurological and psychiatric conditions, addressing key challenges in brain research and clinical care. 10:10 – 10:40: NeuroelectroMagnetic Data Archive and high-performance computing for human EEG/MEG/iEEG data: the NEMAR-NSG platform, Arnaud Delorme; Seyed Yahya Shirazi; Dung Truong; Choonhan Youn; Subhashini Sivagnanam (UC San Diego); Russell A. Poldrack (Stanford University); Amitava Majumdar; Scott Makeig (UC San Diego) Abstract: The NeuroElectroMagnetic Data Archive and Tools Resource integrates open data, standardized annotation, and high-performance computing to accelerate reproducible analysis of human EEG, MEG, and iEEG. Built as a gateway to OpenNeuro, NEMAR indexes BIDS-formatted datasets with HED event annotations, provides search, quality assessment, and interactive visualizations, and brokers compute to SDSC resources through the Neuroscience Gateway for scalable, containerized workflows including EEGLAB-based pipelines. By coupling archive storage to NSG-mediated execution on systems such as Expanse, NEMAR minimizes data movement and enables end-to-end, provenance-preserving analyses at scale, supporting FAIR principles and cross-study meta-analysis. Together, NEMAR and NSG lower barriers for large-cohort neurophysiology, promote standardized event semantics, and provide a transparent path from dataset discovery to replicable results. 10:45 – 11:15: Neuron and NSG – parallel software meets parallel hardware, Ted Carnevale, Yale University Abstract: This presentation surveys how the Neuroscience Gateway has enabled productive use of the NEURON simulator to address problems in the domain of computational neuroscience that require high-performance and high-throughput computing. 11:20 – 11:50: HiAER-Spike: Running large spiking neural networks on an FPGA neuromorphic computing platform through NSG, Kenneth Yoshimoto, Diana Vins UC San Diego Abstract: HiAER-Spike is a hardware (FPGA)/software (Python) platform for reconfigurable neuromorphic computing. It has the potential to execute spiking neural networks up to 160 million neurons and 40 billion synapses. A Python interface allows users to specify neurons, connectivity, and input and direct timesteps. This tool is available through NSG. CPC extends the Free Energy Principle (FEP) to the societal level, positing that interacting agents (both human and artificial) collaboratively minimize their collective prediction error through interaction. We argue that this process, functioning as a form of decentralized Bayesian inference embodied in interaction games, is the engine for symbol emergence. It provides a mechanism for agents to integrate their partial and heterogeneous perceptual information, leading to a shared, co-created understanding that exceeds the capabilities of any single agent. The CPC framework provides a scientific foundation for "co-creative learning," a new paradigm for human-AI interaction where systems learn with humans, rather than merely from them. This contrasts with traditional AI alignment, which often assumes a unilateral transfer of knowledge. CPC enables a bilateral, organic alignment that emerges from continuous, mutual interaction. This bottom-up, co-creative process offers a compelling alternative to top-down alignment methods, paving the way for a future of human-AI symbiosis. It allows humans and AI to co-evolve, generate new knowledge together, and realize the development of true collective minds. Short Bio: Tadahiro Taniguchi is a Professor at the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University. He received his M.E. in 2003 and Ph.D. in Engineering in 2006, both from Kyoto University. He began his academic career at Ritsumeikan University, serving as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the College of Information Science and Engineering before assuming his current position at Kyoto University in 2024. During his tenure at Ritsumeikan, he was also a Visiting Associate Professor at Imperial College London from September 2015 to September 2016. Concurrently, he serves as a Senior Technical Advisor at Panasonic Holdings Corporation, an Affiliate Professor at Ritsumeikan University, a Director of the Tomorrow Never Knows association, Representative Director of the Bibliobattle Association, Director of the AI Robot Association (AIRoA), a Technical Advisor for ABEJA, Inc., and the Chair of the IEEE Cognitive and Developmental Systems Technical Committee. His research interests include artificial intelligence, emergent systems, and cognitive and developmental robotics. He is a pioneer in the field of "Symbol Emergence in Robotics," a constructive approach to understanding the mechanisms of language acquisition and semantic understanding from the perspective of the symbol grounding problem. The Computational Neuroscience unit (https://www.oist.jp/research/research-units/cnu) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology has openings for postdoctoral researchers interested in nanoscale computational neuroscience modeling. Initial duration is two years with option to extend. We have been spearheading the development of efficient computational tools to simulate electrophysiological, molecular and cell biology processes in neurons at the nanoscale (STEPS project http://steps.sourceforge.net) Examples are detailed simulations of the molecular control of vesicle pools and their release in presynaptic terminals (Science Advances 2025) and of how morphology affects calcium transients in perisynaptic astrocytic processes. We make use of recent experimental data like single cell proteomics and super-resolution imaging of live cells. The modeling technology allows for simulation of complete neurons with their spines. We are looking for postdocs interested in pursuing questions about the function of cerebellar or hippocampal neurons, synapses or astrocytes that require nanoscale simulation. Competences: Experience in computational modeling with a recent PhD in a relevant discipline such as computational biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry. Traditional task- or stimulus-driven approaches align data through trial averaging and anatomical registration, but these methods fail for spontaneous activity, where no shared temporal reference exists. In this talk, I will introduce a statistical framework, called latent-aligned Restricted Boltzmann Machines, to build a common representational space from whole-brain recordings of spontaneous activity in multiple zebrafish larvae. This shared latent space, composed of spatially localized co-activation motifs or cell assemblies, allows bidirectional mapping of brain states: activity patterns from one fish can be encoded and decoded into another. The translated activity patterns retain their original spatial structure and show high plausibility within the recipient brain. We further use this shared space to segment spontaneous activity into discrete brain states and we quantify their Markovian transition statistics. Remarkably, these state-to-state dynamics are stereotyped across individuals, suggesting that spontaneous activity reflects intrinsic computational priors of neural processing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! PhD position in computational neuroscience (event-based computing / spiking networks) As part of a Marie-Curie Doctoral Network (ELEVATE <https://www.elevate-dn.eu/index.php/about/>), we are offering a PhD student position. The proposed project sits a the interface of computational neuroscience and neuromorphic computing, and is embedded within a strong network of European academic and industrial partners. ENVIRONMENT: The student will be part of the Theoretical Neuroscience lab <https://www.machenslab.org/>, led by Christian Machens, which is hosted at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon, Portugal. The Champalimaud Foundation <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/> is a private, non-profit institute with a vibrant and highly international academic community. Many groups work in the field of systems and computational neuroscience, <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/champalimaud-research> providing a stimulating and exciting work environment. The student will also interact with the training network ELEVATE <https://www.elevate-dn.eu/index.php/about/> and spend several months at Rodolphe Sepulchre <https://sites.google.com/site/rsepulchre/>‘s lab at KU Leuven, Belgium. PROJECT: Across the animal world, biological networks are made up of different types of neurons. The most prominent division is that between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neurons. However, modern AI system as well as most neuromorphic systems ignore this division and assume only one type of neuron. In this project, we will study the specific functional or structural qualities arising from a division into E and I neurons, and work out any potential benefits. One key design feature of networks with E and I neurons is that they are composed of intrinsically unstable subsystems, namely recurrently connected E neurons, that are controlled and stabilized by other subsystems, namely I neurons. The benefits of designing and controlling intrinsically unstable systems have long been known to engineers in other context, e.g., the desing of modern fighter aircraft. The goal of this project is to use some of these engineering insights in order to investigate how the interplay of excitation and inhibition can be utilized to perform specific computations. Since real neurons communicate with discrete events (spikes), a key aim is to work out the distinct computational roles of inhibitory and excitatory spikes, and apply the concepts to a few example systems. TASKS: * Study the relevant background literature from both engineering and neuroscience fields. Based on geometric and analytical insights from the framework of ‘spike coding networks’, develop analytical or geometric methods to study the roles of excitatory and inhibitory spikes. Develop a few canonical systems and use numerical simulations to demonstrate the role of excitatory and inhibitory populations in computational tasks. * Publish research articles, regular participation in top international conferences to present your work. * Complete an internship at KU Leuven with Prof. Rodolphe Sepulchre * Participate in yearly retreats organized by the doctoral network participants * Support the dissemination of software tools and concepts. First is history. RL was the basis of AI long before the term AI was introduced in 1956. The first machine learning (ML) systems were based on RL even before digital computers existed. A second reason for renewed interest in RL is the clarification of some misunderstandings that have been prevalent in the ML community. Genetically encoded tools will be used to dissect the circuits that contribute to the learning of these tasks, and state-of-the-art behavioral modeling will help infer the timescale and nature of synaptic plasticity. The postdoc will be based at Aix-Marseille University, at the Institut of Systems Neuroscience <https://ins-amu.fr/> in Marseille and will work under the lead of Spase Petkoski, INSERM CR (tenured researcher, equivalent to an Associate Professor), part of the Theoretical Neuroscience group led by Viktor Jirsa. A close collaboration is also envisaged with the clinical practitioners from the Neurology department of the public hospital at Marseille (APHM), the neurologists Mira Didic and Olivier Felician who work with patients with dementia, as well as with JF Mangin, the head of neuroimaging at Neurospin in Paris. As a postdoctoral researcher, the candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing computational models for the molecular mechanism of pathological proteins in AD into the whole-brain neuroinformatics platform The Virtual Brain <https://www.thevirtualbrain.org/tvb/zwei/> (TVB). Specifically, this will be done through glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses, utilizing existing neuronal mass candidates from the literature and from the previous work by the group. The model will also combine the mechanisms of prion-propagation. The modeling work will be accompanied by resting-state fMRI data analysis to identify the biomarkers of interest. The main cohort for the project will be Memento <http://www.memento-cohort.org/>, but ADNI3 <https://adni.loni.usc.edu/data-samples/adni-data/> will be also used. The candidate is thus expected to be familiar with concepts from Nonlinear Dynamics, in particular, solving and analyzing coupled ordinary differential equations. In the later stage, the project will also require an application of model inversion with simulation-based inference that should facilitate establishing links between the model parameter space and the neuroimaging data features. The latter will be a key component of this project and will also require addressing issues related to model degeneracy and resilience. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team developing models and methodologies for better explanation of neuroimaging data. This work has a broader impact than AD, it will establish an interpretable link across scales from synapses to neuronal populations (the network nodes in TVB), and significantly amplify the effectiveness of TVB in comprehending multiscale effects within brain networks. This, in turn, will facilitate the enhanced usability of digital twins in the clinical context and in diagnosing brain health status. Most of the models were able to survive in the proposed environment for quite a long time, and one entry used the optimal decision strategy, with only 22 neurons (out of 1000 available). The challenge is still running with a new task (cued decision, which might be simpler) and a new agenda (you have two months). You'll find instructions at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules for the new task. Reminder: you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. This was for good scientific reasons. First, there was a drive to isolate individual causes of behaviours and therefore to carefully control the environments in which children behaved during a study. Moreover, the equipment required to assess the neural correlates of behaviours were cumbersome and difficult to move so children's mobility had to be restricted. Recent developments in wearable and wifi-enhanced technologies have now allowed us to literally "untether" children and explore their brain and behaviour as they move around and interact naturally. This has opened new avenues for research, but has equally revealed important new challenges to the way that we approach developmental sciences. In this seminar, I will draw on my lab's recent work on children's sensory cue integration, neural synchrony during children's collaborative problem solving and the trials and tribulations of translating basic cognitive neuroscience research into real-world effective classroom interventions to highlight some of the challenges that contemporary developmental sciences faces. Short Bio: Professor Denis Mareschal is Director of the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, at Birkbeck University of London, and a founding member of the Centre for Educational Neuroscience. After completing a BA in Natural Science at Cambridge, he moved on to studying learning -- initially in the form of an MA in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at McGill in Montreal, Canada and then through completing a DPhil in Psychology at Oxford. Professor Mareschal's research has focussed on identifying the mechanisms of learning and development in infancy and childhood through the combined use of behavioural studies, computational modelling and neuroimaging. He has received a number of awards for his work, including the Marr Prize from the Cognitive Science Society, the Young Investigator Award from the International Congress on Infant Studies and the Margaret Donaldson Prize from the BPS Developmental Section. Over the last 10 years he has led the UnLocke project (Unlocke.org) developing a neuroscience-based primary school maths and science education intervention. He is committed to taking neuroscience out of the lab and into the real-world, in terms of primary research and in terms of translational impact. Tenure-track assistant professor in computational neuroscience and/or cognition The Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications from outstanding early-career candidates in Computational Neuroscience and Cognition for a tenure-track assistant professorship. This position is part of a new cluster of faculty positions in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and the Brain and Cognitive Sciences supported by the Simons Foundation. We seek to hire scholars who develop computational theories and models to deepen our understanding of the brain in real-world, complex, or naturalistic contexts, or to understand collective decision-making and communication in groups of individuals. Researchers who develop and test computational models across levels of representations (from the brain to the mind) are particularly welcome to apply. Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. *NITMB is seeking early-career researchers who have interest in transforming biological research and inspiring new mathematical discoveries. * This opportunity is open to researchers who want to develop mathematical, theoretical, and computational approaches to study any area of biology. NITMB Fellows conduct independent research programs, in collaboration with NITMB faculty members or others outside the Institute, focused on developing new mathematics and statistics relevant to challenges in biology. Hello! We are happy to announce our first workshop of the new academic year! This time we will teach you how to use the *Bonsai* reactive programming language. Many experiments require us to synchronize multiple data streams— from cameras, sensors, microscopes—precisely deliver stimuli, and, quite often, do everything in a *closed-loop* setting. The fact that different devices use different software doesn’t make this task easier. One of the best—and open—solutions to these challenges is *Bonsai*, a reactive programming language that allows you to collect data from multiple systems, from calcium imaging through sound recordings to sensors, and to control output devices—such as feeders, motors, or stimulus delivery systems—to build *closed-loop* paradigms. It is easy to learn, implement, and is robust. During our workshop, we will introduce the basic logic of Bonsai; cover loading and saving data; working with a camera to track animals; and the basics of closed-loop experiments. We will also cover using Arduino alongside Bonsai to control experimental equipment and to save data from your sensors. *Requirements:* A Windows computer and a webcam. Introduction It is widely accepted that synaptic plasticity constitutes the cellular correlate of learning. Yet, synaptic plasticity alone is insufficient to fully account for learning. Other mechanisms, such as intrinsic plasticity of membrane excitability, have been shown to be necessary for memory formation. Still, it remains unclear how intrinsic plasticity contributes to memory encoding and alters cognitive processes. In this project, we will leverage the advanced voltage imaging in larval zebrafish to investigate how intrinsic plasticity reshapes neuronal behavior. 4. Your Job In this project, you will contribute to both engineering and neurobiology. First, you will help build a light-sheet microscope optimized for voltage imaging at the single-cell and subcellular level in live larval zebrafish (1). The development of this system will be supported by Dr. Emmanuel Marquez Legorreta↗, Dr. Ernest van der Wee↗, and the Biology Image Center↗ team. Once the microscope is established, you will use it to investigate the electrophysiological properties of cerebellar Purkinje cells with advanced voltage indicators such as Voltron2. The ultimate goal is to uncover how Purkinje cells alter their dendritic signaling and spiking characteristics under different sensory or chemogenetic conditioning paradigms, and to determine how these changes may be mediated through intrinsic plasticity or brain state. LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling—from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction—and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain–machine interfaces. The program combines *morning lectures* on theory, *afternoon tutorials* using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and *evening group project work*, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: *20 years of LASCON*. Ideally, the candidate should have a master degree in physics but other quantitative backgrounds will be considered. The researcher will be based in the Integrative Biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour, located in Konstanz, Germany. The group focuses on a diverse set of theoretical biophysics problems. The doctoral project is a collaboration between the integrative biophysics research group and the research group of Prof. Ilya Nemenman at Emory University, Altanta, US. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to have research stays at Emory University. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. Applications are invited for postdoctoral Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRFs) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience (CCN) <www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-neuroscience/> within the Flatiron Institute at the Simons Foundation. The mission of CCN is to develop theories, models, and computational methods that deepen our knowledge of brain function. CCN takes a vertically-integrated “systems" neuroscience approach, building models that are motivated by fundamental principles, that are constrained by properties of neural circuits and responses, and that provide insights into perception, cognition and behavior. This cross-disciplinary approach not only leads to the design of new model-driven scientific experiments, but also encapsulates current functional descriptions of the brain that can spur the development of new engineered computational systems, especially in the realm of machine learning. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, FRFs are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. FRFs also have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. FRF positions are two-year appointments and are generally renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. FRFs receive a research budget and have access to the Flatiron Institute’s world-class scientific computing resources. FRFs may be eligible for subsidized housing within walking distance of the CCN. Our research focuses on the mathematical principles of learning, perception and action in brains and machines. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). This unique opportunity allows fellows to ground their theories in rich empirical resources, potentially inspiring novel analyses, visualizations, and predictions that could subsequently be empirically tested. We seek a researcher whose work combines the following two elements. First, the research is empirical and addresses substantive questions in human cognition (e.g., perception, memory, decision making). Second, the lens of analysis is informed by computational modeling including cognitive modeling, computational neuroscience or data science. The Brain Networks Research and Development Group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, lead by Professor Thomas Knösche offers a PhD position for 3 years. The project is dedicated to elucidating the role of long-range brain connectivity in human language processing and will involve EEG and MRI experiments as well as realistic modeling of biological neural networks. It is a cooperation between the TU Berlin, the TU Chemnitz, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the MPI-CBS, funded by the DFG. Candidates should hold a master (or equivalent) degree and have a background in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or similar, as well as a keen interest in neuroscience. Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. Some experience in EEG or MEG experimenting and data analysis would be beneficial, though not strictly required. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are welcome. The Institute offers a world-leading research environment with outstanding facilities and research infrastructure (five MR scanners, including a 3T Connectom and 7T Terra.X; MEG; EEG TMS). Traditional computational models perform well in artificial tasks but struggle to generalize to real-life ecological situations. In contrast, new deep learning models excel at processing real-world information and demonstrate cognitive abilities close to those of humans. However, these models are trained on impractically large datasets and use training protocols that are not cognitively feasible, which limits their ability to explain or predict human learning and cognitive development. This project aims to develop the first cognitively feasible learning agents—AI systems that learn language and cognition within constraints that mimic human development. Leveraging a unique dataset (the 1kD corpus)— continuous daily audio-visual recordings from 18 children’s first 1,000 days of life—we will train models directly on the ecologically valid, socially embedded experiences that shape children’s growth. Unlike large-scale industrial models, which depend on vast impersonal datasets, our approach emphasizes individual-centered, real-world input that captures the long-tail variability of human development. By replicating learning trajectories across multiple households, we will establish the first mechanistic framework for how natural input shapes children’s cognition. The project represents a bold shift from analyzing existing models to building new brain-inspired learning agents, directly addressing ecological validity and laying the foundation for a new generation of cognitive science. Short Bio: Uri Hasson grew up in Jerusalem. He studied philosophy and cognitive sciences at the Hebrew University as an undergrad. He completed his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and was a postdoctoral fellow at NYU before moving to Princeton. He is currently a Professor in the Psychology Department and the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University. His research program aims to understand the neural basis of face-to-face, brain-to-brain, communication in real-world contexts, using big ECoG data and deep language models. Cross-domain saliency maps: interpretable attributions for EEG/MEG/LFP models (PyTorch & TensorFlow library)

We are introducing a saliency map method that produces meaningful attributions for time-series ML models. Can you help the multimodal infant model MIMo learn two typical infant behaviors: self touch and hand regard? What is BabyBench?
