The Computational Neuroscience unit (https://www.oist.jp/research/research-units/cnu) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology has an opening for software developers to contribute to further expansion of our nanoscale simulation package STEPS. Initial duration is two years with option to extend. We have been spearheading the development of efficient computational tools to simulate electrophysiological, molecular and cell biology processes in neurons at the nanoscale (STEPS http://steps.sourceforge.net) The hired postdoctoral researcher or technician is expected to make valuable contributions to the STEPS project by implementing novel techniques for accurate computational modeling and contributing to software maintenance. In performing these tasks, the candidate is expected to co-author publications that are either based on theory and computational techniques, or geared more towards answering real biological questions through computational modeling. As such, the ideal candidate will have a scientific background but also possess excellent programming skills. Competences: For the postdoctoral position a recent PhD is required in a relevant discipline such as computer science, neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and for the technician position a masters degree is required in computer science or related disciplines. For either position, we require a talented programmer with experience in C++ and Python who can work in a team. Ideally, the candidate has some experience of modeling neuronal or other biological processes computationally, but this is not essential if the candidate is motivated to move into the field. We develop simulation-based machine learning methods that address this challenge. The lab of Constantin Rothkopf (https://www.pip.tu-darmstadt.de/) at the Centre for Cognitive Science @ TU Darmstadt has several open positions at the PhD and Postdoc levels. Research in the laboratory focuses on explaining human sequential visuomotor decisions and behavior under the influence of the world's uncertainties and ambiguities through computational modeling. Using the reverse-engineering approach, we devise algorithms for inferring individuals' internal models of the world, tracking their subjective beliefs over time during behavior and learning, as well as their internal subjective costs and benefits, including effort. We investigate naturalistic sequential tasks, including navigation and object manipulation, active learning and active sensing, sequential decision-making under uncertainty, and intuitive physics. The lab has state-of-the-art equipment for eye and body tracking, VR, naturalistic task monitoring, psychophysics, and access to one of the most generous computing infrastructures in Germany. A large-scale tracking lab will be available in 2026. The Simons Collaboration on Ecological Neuroscience (SCENE) (https://www.simonsfoundation.org/neuroscience/simons-collaboration-on-ecolo…) is an exciting 10-year initiative spanning a powerful international network of labs working across species and disciplines - uniting experimental and computational cognitive science, neuroscience, machine learning, and Al to understand real-world behavior and how it shapes neural representations. Emotions, particularly stress, enhancing attention and arousal, influence brain regions like the hippocampus. In neuroscience, it is known that hippocampal reactivations help recall and consolidate experiences. In artificial intelligence (AI), strategies inspired by these reactivations, especially in reinforcement learning, have been shown to accelerate learning. When it comes to emotionally charged circumstances, the relationship between stress, its most prominent hormone, cortisol, and memory functions in the hippocampus, is complex. This project aims to explore the link between stress and hippocampal reactivations via a computational model, and test it in artificial agents. Hello everyone, We are seeking a two-year postdoc position in whole brain modelling (The Virtual Brain) of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, starting in May 2026 at The Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (LIB). The successful candidate will be based in the centre of Paris, working in collaboration with clinicians who have collected a large dataset of multimodal data from ALS patients. The Virtual Brain (TVB) models will be fitted to the data from ALS patients and controls and subsequently used for patient stratification. The project’s focus is not on the development of new parts of TVB, but rather the use of the existing tools in a new applied setting (ALS). This requires working directly with human neuroimaging data (MRI, DTI, fMRI, EEG). A high level of autonomy is expected. Thanks to advances in computer hardware and simulation technology, researchers can now routinely work with these models at the natural density of neurons and synapses. Moreover, the availability of cloud services means that such investigations can be carried out without having to install either the model or the simulation software. A recent workshop analyzed the impact of a specific model of the cortical microcircuit, published ten years ago . The model has been reused in multiple contexts: for reproduction studies, validation of mean-field approaches, exploration of methods of model sharing, and as a building block for larger models. Although the model was less successful in inspiring further neuroscientific studies than the authors of the original work had hoped, it became a de facto benchmark for neuromorphic computing systems. It sparked a constructive race for ever shorter simulation times and lower energy consumption. The quantitative comparison of different platforms reveals qualitative differences between conventional and neuromorphic hardware and limits of speed-up. The structure of the model is based on light microscopy because these were the data available at the time. Guided by simulation results and physiological evidence, the original publication hypothesized a preference of excitatory neurons for inhibitory targets. Modern electron microscopy data of cortical volumes combined with AI based reconstruction techniques is capable of resolving individual synaptic connections. This advances the concept of digital twins of the cortical network to a new level of precision, and has already enabled us to confirm the assumption of target type specificity underlying earlier models. Maybe with the progress sketched here, our community is at a transition point where it becomes easier to cooperatively and incrementally work on models with a larger explanatory scope. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The 2026 VSS satellite workshop on computational and mathematical models in vision (MODVIS) will be held May 13-14 in St. Pete Beach, FL, the two days immediately preceding the main meeting of the Vision Sciences Society (VSS). This year marks a departure for MODVIS: VSS will replace Purdue University in administering the workshop. MODVIS registration will be conducted through the VSS website, and the registration deadlines will align with those of VSS. The program consists of contributed oral presentations, which are longer and more interactive than a regular VSS talk, and the schedule is designed to provide many opportunities for discussions during coffee breaks and a generous lunch break. The workshop will conclude on Thursday with a keynote lecture by Jonathan Victor (Weill Cornell Medical College). As in the past, submission deadlines will be later than those for VSS, and post-deadline submissions will be accepted on a space-available basis. Abstract submissions will be made through the VSS website, with submissions opening in the coming weeks. MODVIS welcomes submissions covering the modelling of any area of vision. The Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, is an internationally recognized research institute of the Max Planck Society and is dedicated to the study of human cognitive abilities and brain processes as well as the development of neuroimaging methods. The Brain Networks Group led by Professor Thomas Knösche offers a Postdoc position (m/f/d) for 3 years. The successful candidate will work on a DFG funded project that is dedicated to the investigation of the working mechanisms underlying the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the human motor cortex using advanced electrophysiological measurement techniques combined with biophysical modeling. The project will be carried out in cooperation between the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the MPI-CBS. Candidates should hold a PhD degree and have a background in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or similar, as well as a keen interest in neuroscience. Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. The ideal candidate would have experience in EEG or MEG (or similar) experimenting, data analysis, and modeling. Prior exposure to volume conduction modeling and/or source analysis would be beneficial. The Institute offers a world-leading research environment with outstanding facilities and research infrastructure (five MR scanners, including a 3T Connectom and 7T Terra.X; MEG; EEG; TMS). How does the brain support adaptive decision making in the real world? Recent advances in AI have provided us with models that rival humans on challenging naturalistic tasks and can serve as starting points for tackling this question head-on. At the same time, as frontier AI labs push the limits of scaling laws, many doubt whether more data and compute alone will lead to human-level learning, planning, and generalization. The new *Human & Machine Intelligence Lab* at *Boston College* is recruiting *1-2 PhD students* to work on reverse-engineering naturalistic learning and decision making in the brain. Specifically, we aim to understand: 1. How the human brain *learns* internal models of complex, naturalistic environments. 2. How it uses these models to *plan* toward distant goals. 3. How it *generalizes* this knowledge to new environments. Building on recent work in theory-based RL [1], you will tackle these questions by leveraging state-of-the-art AI models (e.g., DDQN, MuZero, LLMs/VLMs) to analyze behavioral, fMRI, and MEG data from human subjects engaging in rich tasks, such as learning to play new video games. You will also have the opportunity to design and conduct experiments (behavior/fMRI/MEG) to test your hypotheses. To achieve the aims of the project, we will combine magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG), computational modelling, and behavioural paradigms to decode and model multiattribute preferences at high temporal resolution. This approach will provide mechanistic insights on the drivers of preference variability, with potential applications in both clinical and applied behavioural science domains. The successful candidates will design and conduct experiments using MEG, analyse neural and behavioural data, and develop computational models of decision-making. On the other hand networks of firing-rate units with low-rank connectivity have universal computational capabilities, but do not work with spikes or generate noise self-consistently. Although empirical approaches to merge these two computational frameworks have been constructed, there is no established theory describing their unification. Here we develop such a theory. We study analytically and numerically networks with connectivity comprising random “strong”, and low-rank “weak” components. When the low-rank connectivity is slow, a well-defined notion of instantaneous firing rate emerges which implies universal computation as previously shown. However, the fact that such time-varying rates are the result of E-I balance has important implications. We show that internally or externally generated fluctuations along particular latent modes tend to break the E-I balance. Its maintenance is obtained through the emergence of a spontaneous coupling between the mean and the variance of the membrane potential and the norm of the latent state driving these modes. This leads to several predictions, the most counterintuitive of which is that coherent global fluctuations in subthreshold membrane potential (Vm) should coexist with desynchronized activity at constant firing rates when the dynamics of these modes is excited. To test our theory, we show that the coupling between the average Vm and the latent state adds new non-linear dimensions to the low-dimensional manifold of the network, which lead to a frequency doubling when the input to the network is periodic, a prediction that is borne out in population recordings from mouse V1. Our results unify two prevalent frameworks for cortical computation and clarify the relationship between computation, dynamics and geometry in circuits of spiking neurons. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The behavior has its distinct set of attributes: 1) Promising users all the goods but not living up to any of them—similar to hallucinations in RL–based LLMs (Huang et al., 2023)—Users were cheered up by “flattery” (one type of hallucination). 2) These systems seem devoid of any emotions, but they mimic emotional reactions, especially positive social emotions, similarly to the way human scammers do (Wang et al., 2021), in the absence of guilt and shame 3) Chekley also includes the notion of “semantic aphasia” in this regard, or fluent speech but with no real semantic comprehension—a feature which can still be inferred in LLMs on a deeper level, although inasmuch as they have no consciousness, no moral consciousness can be inferred. Uncovering the neural mechanisms behind motor planning is key to understanding how the brain coordinates complex, sequential behaviours. This research will investigate the neural dynamics involved in motor planning, with an emphasis on how the brain organizes and prepares motor sequences. Previous studies suggest that neural competitive queuing of ordinal structures plays a central role in skilled sequential actions [1], allowing the brain to resolve competition between movements. Furthermore, recent research highlights the use of expansive null-space representations in motor cortex of non-human primate, which prepare movements while preventing premature execution [2]. Building on these insights, this project will explore how neural networks within the brain coordinate motor planning, focusing on exploring neural dynamics in different parts of brain areas. Human recordings conducted at the CHBH provide a rich foundation of experimental data for this study. The data, gathered through different modalities, will inform the development of a theoretical model that is consistent with both these new datasets and previously published results. The project will also involve designing new experiments based on the model’s theoretical predictions to validate or refine the proposed framework. By integrating advanced neural network models, we aim to build a comprehensive modelling framework of motor sequence planning that aligns with experimental findings. How does this remarkable learning process unfold? One potentially useful source of information lies in the statistical patterns that characterize natural languages, which signal structures ranging from phonemes to words to grammatical structures. Beyond merely tracking these patterns, how might infants use statistical regularities to support language development? In my presentation, I will explore the hypothesis that infants exploit statistical regularities in the service of efficiently processing information in their linguistic environments. Short Bio: Dr. Jenny Saffran has been on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison since she received her Ph.D. in 1997. Her research program focuses on how infants learn, particularly in the domain of language. She is a highly engaged teacher and mentor to students at all levels. Dr. Saffran is the recipient of numerous awards for her scholarship and teaching, including as the inaugural recipient of the Jeffrey Elman Prize for Scientific Achievement and Community Building from the Cognitive Science Society. The Computational Neuroscience Initiative<https://www.cni.upenn.edu/> at the University of Pennsylvania offers a new program for Interdisciplinary Training in Computational Neuroscience (ITCN) at the doctoral level. The goal of the ITCN is to train a new generation of scientists who will make quantitative links between properties of the brain and properties of the mind. ITCN trainees will learn to use computational methodology to interpret experimental results, build predictive models of brain function that inform the design of the experiments, and support an ever-growing list of applications from brain-machine interfaces in the clinic to cutting-edge forms of artificial intelligence. Our dynamic research group uses diverse computational modeling approaches, including biological neural networks, cognitive modeling, and machine learning/artificial intelligence, to study learning and memory. All details about this school can be found online at https://www.nengo.ai/summer-school The Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo is excited to announce our 11th annual Nengo summer school on large-scale brain modelling and neuromorphic computing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. The computational neuroscience research group at the Center for Memory and Glioscience, Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Daejeon, South Korea is seeking highly motivated researchers for two open positions, a postdoctoral researcher and senior researcher. Our group studies the biophysical basis of neural information processing through computational modeling, with particular emphasis on developing neuroscience-inspired machine learning/AI (neuroAI) models to analyze and model neuroscience data. We are big fans of physiological mechanisms and investigate how they collectively define the functions of neural systems underlying intelligent behavior. Currently, our research projects focus on the cerebellar neural circuit and its adaptive computation: · Computations for flexible movement control via the population activity of cerebellar neurons · Efficient construction of large-scale, physiologically realistic computational models of neural circuits · Modeling neuro-glia interactions and their impact on behavior We carry out these projects in close collaboration with experimental labs both within our Center and abroad, providing rich opportunities for integrative research. Simons Foundation Now Accepting Applications for Workshop on Canonical Cortical Computations The Center for Computational Neuroscience (CCN) <https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-neurosci…> at the Flatiron Institute and the Simons Foundation Neuroscience Collaborations <https://www.simonsfoundation.org/neuroscience/> invite applications to participate in a workshop aimed at developing a potential collaborative project focused on a mechanistic understanding of canonical cortical computations at the circuit level. The workshop will be held April 27–28, 2026, at the Simons Foundation’s offices in New York City. This workshop represents a new model for fostering large-scale scientific collaborations between CCN researchers and external scientists. We particularly encourage applications from experimentalists working in rodent and/or nonhuman primate models. While the envisioned collaborative project will primarily support external experimental work, theoretical and computational neuroscientists are also welcome to apply. For decades, efforts to fully understand canonical cortical computations were slowed by limited descriptions of cell types and connections, technical barriers to measuring and perturbing circuits in vivo and the abstract nature of theoretical models. Thanks to advances in anatomy, biophysics, connectomics, developmental biology and circuit-level tools, as well as powerful new computational and theoretical approaches, researchers are now poised to build and test models that more faithfully capture the function of canonical cortical circuits. We believe this will be possible only through a highly collaborative, vertically integrated partnership between theorists and experimentalists working together to build a framework for thinking about canonical circuit computations in the cortex. Approximately 30 workshop attendees will be selected from these applications. Participation in this workshop is not a guarantee of inclusion in a potential collaborative project or future funding. Graduate student positions in systems neuroscience at McGill University: The Masset lab, located at McGill University in Montréal, is recruiting 1-2 graduate students in experimental systems neuroscience for a start in Fall 2026. The research group integrates ideas and methods from systems neuroscience, experimental psychology and machine learning to understand how the heterogeneity of neuron types endows brain circuits with efficient distributed computations underlying behavior and cognition. We develop and experimentally validate new models of distributed computation in brain circuits including a new understanding of how dopamine-based distributed reinforcement learning could be implemented in the brain. To answer these questions, we perform large scale electrophysiological recordings in rodents performing complex behavioral tasks, build new data analysis tools and develop new classes of biologically plausible neural networks. Projects would investigate how brain circuits implement distributed computations underlying cognition and behavior within and across brain areas, including dopamine-based RL. Experimental approaches would involve refining and developing complex cognitive tasks in rats, chronic multi-site Neuropixel recordings, and advanced computational methods. The students would work on the experimental side of the lab but would closely collaborate with the computational and theoretical side of the research group to test models of distributed computation and develop and validate new data analysis methods. Students would also join a strong community at the intersection of neuroscience and AI at McGill and Mila. Coding experience (Python/Matlab) is essential and experience in animal research strongly preferred. A Computational Neuroscience Approach to Learning Strategies and Psychiatric Traits In our complex and ever-changing world, humans are constantly faced with a flood of sensory information. To make effective and timely decisions, the brain cannot possibly process every single detail. Instead, it is thought to rely on intelligent "cognitive shortcuts" or simple strategies (heuristics) to simplify complex problems. This allows for rapid and flexible learning, but the mechanisms behind this process are not well understood. When are these shortcuts deployed? How does the brain select the right strategy for the task at hand? How does it know when a shortcut is no longer working and a new strategy is needed? And how are the selection and efficiency of those shortcuts influenced by common psychiatric traits such as anxiety and impulsivity? Postdoctoral position in circuit/system neuroscience at McGill University. The Krishnaswamy and Cook laboratories are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work on a project involving the neural circuits and computations underlying neuromodulation and behaviors such as attention and decision-making in mice. Position will involve cutting edge methods such as in vivo acousto-optic two-photon microscopy from cortical areas, fiber photometry from neuromodulator centers, widefield imaging using voltage/calcium-indicators, and genetic and optogenetic tools. Position will also involve using and developing advanced computational data analysis tools and building AI-inspired models of behavioral and neural activity. The project will involve close collaboration Dr. Paul Masset's lab to examine models of reinforcement learning in the context of neuromodulators. Prior experience in these methods is a plus but not a requirement. Background knowledge and/or graduate training in the neurosciences and computational methods is an advantage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Permanent position in computational neuromodulation of brain networks and application to mental disorders ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The new research team NECTARINE at Inria in Strasbourg / France aims to create a synergy between clinicians and computational researchers to develop new healthcare technologies. The team works on stochastic microscopic network models to describe macroscopic experimental data and computational techniques of neural feedback control based on subject behavior and/or encephalographic data. We collaborate closely with clinicians and choose our research focus along the clinical applications. Major scientific objectives are stochastic multi-scale simulations of neurostimulation and corresponding mean-field descriptions of neural activity on the macroscopic scale. Moreover, we develop novel closed-loop techniques with real-time control merging experimental data and numerical models by machine learning techniques. The team's clinical research focuses on neuromodulation of patients suffering from deficits in attention and temporal prediction. The team offers the possibility to apply for a permanent position as Chargé de Recherche (CR) or Directeur de Recherche (DR) in the research field of computational neuroscience with a strong focus on stochastic dynamics linking brain network modelling with experimental data. Dear colleagues, We will host the *NSF BRAID Workshop: Bridging Neuroscience and Engineering for Energy-Efficient AI*—a one-day program on neuromorphic computing and energy-efficient AI—on *Monday, December 8, 2025, at the Omni San Diego, immediately following NeurIPS'25*, at the same location. The workshop will feature invited speakers from neuroscience, neuromorphic engineering, and computer systems, including James Aimone, Maksim Bazhenov, Kwabena Boahen, Dhireesha Kudithipudi, Robert Legenstein, Stefan Mihalas, Bruno Olshausen, Priyadarshini Panda, and Vijay Janapa Reddi (tentative). The program will comprise two themed sessions and a poster session, all centered on neuromorphic computing. The neuroscience session will explore how insights from the brain can be leveraged to improve, augment, or rethink state-of-the-art large language models and AI. The hardware session will address whether conventional, emerging, or hybrid device technologies are best suited for the next generation of AI systems. Yet, how the cortex represents and uses uncertainty in this process remains unclear. In the first part of this talk, I will present a normative framework showing how uncertainty can modulate prediction error activity to yield uncertainty-modulated prediction errors (UPEs), hypothesised to be represented by layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons. We propose that these UPEs are computed through inhibitory mechanisms involving SST and PV interneurons. A circuit model demonstrates how cortical cell types can locally compute means, variances, and UPEs, leading to adaptive learning rates. In the second part, I will discuss how uncertainty modulation could be controlled by higher-level representations. We formally derived neural dynamics that minimise prediction errors under the assumption that cortical areas must not only predict the activity in other areas and sensory streams but also jointly project their inverse expected uncertainty about their predictions, which we call “confidence”. This yields a confidence-weighted integration of bottom-up and top-down signals, consistent with Bayesian principles, and predicts the existence of second-order errors that compare confidence with performance. We are going to discuss an intricate web of reasons that make us study the visual cortices of mice, the spatial cognition of bats, or the molecular basis of Alzheimer’s disease in humans, from long-time fascinations, through previous, often random choices, inspirations by other people, or economic/social circumstances. The aim of this short workshop will be to discuss in depth our reasons for doing neuroscience. The foundation of HNN is a biophysically-detailed neocortical model, representing a patch of neocortex receiving thalamic and corticocortical drive. The HNN model was designed to simulate the time course of primary current dipoles and enables direct comparison, in nAm units, to source-localized M/EEG data, along with layer-specific cellular activity. HNN workflows are constructed around simulating commonly measured ERPs and low-frequency oscillations. In this workshop, we will review the scientific foundations underlying the HNN model. Thereafter, will we walk through how to get started with HNN using NSG, and we will briefly demo various features of the HNN GUI. 9:35 – 10:05: AI-driven Brain Digital Twins: Large-scale biophysical models of neuronal circuits to study brain function and disease, Salvador Dura Bernal, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University Abstract: Understanding brain function and disease requires studying interactions across multiple scales, from molecular and cellular mechanisms to circuit-wide dynamics and behavior. Biophysically detailed brain circuit models provide a powerful tool to integrate diverse experimental data across these scales, allowing researchers to simulate and analyze brain activity in a mechanistic and predictive manner. Leveraging AI and high-performance computing, we have developed large-scale, biologically realistic models of various thalamocortical circuits, including motor, somatosensory, and auditory regions, each comprising ~15,000 neurons and ~30 million synapses. These models incorporate experimentally derived neuronal morphologies, electrophysiological properties, and connectivity, enabling them to reproduce cell-type and layer-specific electrical activity patterns observed in vivo across scales, from membrane voltages and action potentials to local field potentials and electroencephalogram signals. Our models have been instrumental in elucidating the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying neurological disease and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, dystonia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease. They also offer insights into therapeutic targets to restore healthy neural dynamics through novel pharmacological and neurostimulation treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). These mechanistic models provide the foundation for constructing AI-driven Brain Digital Twins—virtual replicas of an individual’s brain state that integrate multimodal patient data to simulate brain function, predict disease progression, and optimize personalized treatment strategies. By bridging mechanistic modeling of brain circuits and AI, Brain Digital Twins have the potential to transform diagnosis, prevention and treatment of neurological and psychiatric conditions, addressing key challenges in brain research and clinical care. 10:10 – 10:40: NeuroelectroMagnetic Data Archive and high-performance computing for human EEG/MEG/iEEG data: the NEMAR-NSG platform, Arnaud Delorme; Seyed Yahya Shirazi; Dung Truong; Choonhan Youn; Subhashini Sivagnanam (UC San Diego); Russell A. Poldrack (Stanford University); Amitava Majumdar; Scott Makeig (UC San Diego) Abstract: The NeuroElectroMagnetic Data Archive and Tools Resource integrates open data, standardized annotation, and high-performance computing to accelerate reproducible analysis of human EEG, MEG, and iEEG. Built as a gateway to OpenNeuro, NEMAR indexes BIDS-formatted datasets with HED event annotations, provides search, quality assessment, and interactive visualizations, and brokers compute to SDSC resources through the Neuroscience Gateway for scalable, containerized workflows including EEGLAB-based pipelines. By coupling archive storage to NSG-mediated execution on systems such as Expanse, NEMAR minimizes data movement and enables end-to-end, provenance-preserving analyses at scale, supporting FAIR principles and cross-study meta-analysis. Together, NEMAR and NSG lower barriers for large-cohort neurophysiology, promote standardized event semantics, and provide a transparent path from dataset discovery to replicable results. 10:45 – 11:15: Neuron and NSG – parallel software meets parallel hardware, Ted Carnevale, Yale University Abstract: This presentation surveys how the Neuroscience Gateway has enabled productive use of the NEURON simulator to address problems in the domain of computational neuroscience that require high-performance and high-throughput computing. 11:20 – 11:50: HiAER-Spike: Running large spiking neural networks on an FPGA neuromorphic computing platform through NSG, Kenneth Yoshimoto, Diana Vins UC San Diego Abstract: HiAER-Spike is a hardware (FPGA)/software (Python) platform for reconfigurable neuromorphic computing. It has the potential to execute spiking neural networks up to 160 million neurons and 40 billion synapses. A Python interface allows users to specify neurons, connectivity, and input and direct timesteps. This tool is available through NSG. CPC extends the Free Energy Principle (FEP) to the societal level, positing that interacting agents (both human and artificial) collaboratively minimize their collective prediction error through interaction. We argue that this process, functioning as a form of decentralized Bayesian inference embodied in interaction games, is the engine for symbol emergence. It provides a mechanism for agents to integrate their partial and heterogeneous perceptual information, leading to a shared, co-created understanding that exceeds the capabilities of any single agent. The CPC framework provides a scientific foundation for "co-creative learning," a new paradigm for human-AI interaction where systems learn with humans, rather than merely from them. This contrasts with traditional AI alignment, which often assumes a unilateral transfer of knowledge. CPC enables a bilateral, organic alignment that emerges from continuous, mutual interaction. This bottom-up, co-creative process offers a compelling alternative to top-down alignment methods, paving the way for a future of human-AI symbiosis. It allows humans and AI to co-evolve, generate new knowledge together, and realize the development of true collective minds. Short Bio: Tadahiro Taniguchi is a Professor at the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University. He received his M.E. in 2003 and Ph.D. in Engineering in 2006, both from Kyoto University. He began his academic career at Ritsumeikan University, serving as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the College of Information Science and Engineering before assuming his current position at Kyoto University in 2024. During his tenure at Ritsumeikan, he was also a Visiting Associate Professor at Imperial College London from September 2015 to September 2016. Concurrently, he serves as a Senior Technical Advisor at Panasonic Holdings Corporation, an Affiliate Professor at Ritsumeikan University, a Director of the Tomorrow Never Knows association, Representative Director of the Bibliobattle Association, Director of the AI Robot Association (AIRoA), a Technical Advisor for ABEJA, Inc., and the Chair of the IEEE Cognitive and Developmental Systems Technical Committee. His research interests include artificial intelligence, emergent systems, and cognitive and developmental robotics. He is a pioneer in the field of "Symbol Emergence in Robotics," a constructive approach to understanding the mechanisms of language acquisition and semantic understanding from the perspective of the symbol grounding problem. Proposers are welcome to submit or be involved with more than one proposal. Proposers need not already be members the AISB and will not be required to become members. They will of course be encouraged to join! Postdoc positions in nanoscale modeling of neurons, synapses or astrocytes

The Computational Neuroscience unit (https://www.oist.jp/research/research-units/cnu) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology has openings for postdoctoral researchers interested in nanoscale computational neuroscience modeling. Initial duration is two years with option to extend. We have been spearheading the development of efficient computational tools to simulate electrophysiological, molecular and cell biology processes in neurons at the nanoscale (STEPS project http://steps.sourceforge.net) Examples are detailed simulations of the molecular control of vesicle pools and their release in presynaptic terminals (Science Advances 2025) and of how morphology affects calcium transients in perisynaptic astrocytic processes. We make use of recent experimental data like single cell proteomics and super-resolution imaging of live cells. The modeling technology allows for simulation of complete neurons with their spines. We are looking for postdocs interested in pursuing questions about the function of cerebellar or hippocampal neurons, synapses or astrocytes that require nanoscale simulation. Competences: Experience in computational modeling with a recent PhD in a relevant discipline such as computational biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry. Experience in programming in Python. Fluent English conversation and writing skills. Benefits / Offer: A seniority-based salary and relocation package are offered. The lecture will be held on zoom on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at *11:00 am ET * > To receive the link: https://www.wwtns.online/register-page > *Abstract: *Assessing how brain activity generalizes across individuals is a central challenge in experimental neuroscience. Traditional task- or stimulus-driven approaches align data through trial averaging and anatomical registration, but these methods fail for spontaneous activity, where no shared temporal reference exists. In this talk, I will introduce a statistical framework, called latent-aligned Restricted Boltzmann Machines, to build a common representational space from whole-brain recordings of spontaneous activity in multiple zebrafish larvae. This shared latent space, composed of spatially localized co-activation motifs or cell assemblies, allows bidirectional mapping of brain states: activity patterns from one fish can be encoded and decoded into another. The translated activity patterns retain their original spatial structure and show high plausibility within the recipient brain. We further use this shared space to segment spontaneous activity into discrete brain states and we quantify their Markovian transition statistics. Remarkably, these state-to-state dynamics are stereotyped across individuals, suggesting that spontaneous activity reflects intrinsic computational priors of neural processing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. PhD position in computational neuroscience (event-based computing / spiking networks) As part of a Marie-Curie Doctoral Network (ELEVATE <https://www.elevate-dn.eu/index.php/about/>), we are offering a PhD student position. The proposed project sits a the interface of computational neuroscience and neuromorphic computing, and is embedded within a strong network of European academic and industrial partners. ENVIRONMENT: The student will be part of the Theoretical Neuroscience lab <https://www.machenslab.org/>, led by Christian Machens, which is hosted at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon, Portugal. The Champalimaud Foundation <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/> is a private, non-profit institute with a vibrant and highly international academic community. Many groups work in the field of systems and computational neuroscience, <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/champalimaud-research> providing a stimulating and exciting work environment. The student will also interact with the training network ELEVATE <https://www.elevate-dn.eu/index.php/about/> and spend several months at Rodolphe Sepulchre <https://sites.google.com/site/rsepulchre/>‘s lab at KU Leuven, Belgium. PROJECT: Across the animal world, biological networks are made up of different types of neurons. The most prominent division is that between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neurons. However, modern AI system as well as most neuromorphic systems ignore this division and assume only one type of neuron. In this project, we will study the specific functional or structural qualities arising from a division into E and I neurons, and work out any potential benefits. One key design feature of networks with E and I neurons is that they are composed of intrinsically unstable subsystems, namely recurrently connected E neurons, that are controlled and stabilized by other subsystems, namely I neurons. The benefits of designing and controlling intrinsically unstable systems have long been known to engineers in other context, e.g., the desing of modern fighter aircraft. The goal of this project is to use some of these engineering insights in order to investigate how the interplay of excitation and inhibition can be utilized to perform specific computations. Since real neurons communicate with discrete events (spikes), a key aim is to work out the distinct computational roles of inhibitory and excitatory spikes, and apply the concepts to a few example systems. TASKS: * Study the relevant background literature from both engineering and neuroscience fields. Based on geometric and analytical insights from the framework of ‘spike coding networks’, develop analytical or geometric methods to study the roles of excitatory and inhibitory spikes. Develop a few canonical systems and use numerical simulations to demonstrate the role of excitatory and inhibitory populations in computational tasks. * Publish research articles, regular participation in top international conferences to present your work. * Complete an internship at KU Leuven with Prof. Rodolphe Sepulchre * Participate in yearly retreats organized by the doctoral network participants * Support the dissemination of software tools and concepts. SALARY AND CONDITIONS: The salary and benefits will follow standard EU rules. PhD students will receive their degree from the NOVA University of Lisbon. First is history. RL was the basis of AI long before the term AI was introduced in 1956. The first machine learning (ML) systems were based on RL even before digital computers existed. Despite notable early successes of ML based on RL, RL essentially disappeared from ML until relatively recently. A second reason for renewed interest in RL is the clarification of some misunderstandings that have been prevalent in the ML community. A third, and most important, reason for this resurgence is that new, or rediscovered, algorithms and connections to well developed mathematical and engineering methods have been worked out. The El-Boustani Lab at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) is looking for a highly motivated PhD student and Postdoctoral fellow to research the plasticity mechanisms underlying the learning of goal-directed sensorimotor associations in mice. This project involves whole-brain mappings, two-photon calcium imaging of neuronal populations, as well as dendritic spine imaging in mice during the acquisition of perceptual decision-making tasks. Genetically encoded tools will be used to dissect the circuits that contribute to the learning of these tasks, and state-of-the-art behavioral modeling will help infer the timescale and nature of synaptic plasticity. Successful applicant will contribute to a research program focused on understanding how changes in specific sensorimotor synapses underpin the acquisition of new associations. We welcome applicants with diverse quantitative backgrounds, including but not limited to neuroscience, mathematics, physics, and engineering. Some of the scientific questions that motivate our work are - How do different regions of the brain interact to learn new motor skills? - What are the principles that enable brains and artificial agents to learn efficiently from experience while minimizing forgetting? - How can models of learning and motor control be synthesized across different levels of description? Our research group aims at building mechanistic models of brain function grounded in a combination of theoretical approaches, neural network-based simulations, and machine-learning analysis of experimental data. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a large network of experimental collaborators at University of Oregon and at other institutions with expertise in sensory processing (visual, auditory, and olfactory), motor control, naturalistic behavior, neural engineering, and brain-computer interfaces. While previous experience in computational neuroscience and machine learning are welcome, applicants from other quantitative fields (e.g. math, physics, statistics, computer science) who are eager to learn about neuroscience are encouraged to apply as well. The postdoc will be based at Aix-Marseille University, at the Institut of Systems Neuroscience <https://ins-amu.fr/> in Marseille and will work under the lead of Spase Petkoski, INSERM CR (tenured researcher, equivalent to an Associate Professor), part of the Theoretical Neuroscience group led by Viktor Jirsa. A close collaboration is also envisaged with the clinical practitioners from the Neurology department of the public hospital at Marseille (APHM), the neurologists Mira Didic and Olivier Felician who work with patients with dementia, as well as with JF Mangin, the head of neuroimaging at Neurospin in Paris. As a postdoctoral researcher, the candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing computational models for the molecular mechanism of pathological proteins in AD into the whole-brain neuroinformatics platform The Virtual Brain <https://www.thevirtualbrain.org/tvb/zwei/> (TVB). Specifically, this will be done through glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses, utilizing existing neuronal mass candidates from the literature and from the previous work by the group. The model will also combine the mechanisms of prion-propagation. The modeling work will be accompanied by resting-state fMRI data analysis to identify the biomarkers of interest. The main cohort for the project will be Memento <http://www.memento-cohort.org/>, but ADNI3 <https://adni.loni.usc.edu/data-samples/adni-data/> will be also used. The candidate is thus expected to be familiar with concepts from Nonlinear Dynamics, in particular, solving and analyzing coupled ordinary differential equations. In the later stage, the project will also require an application of model inversion with simulation-based inference that should facilitate establishing links between the model parameter space and the neuroimaging data features. The latter will be a key component of this project and will also require addressing issues related to model degeneracy and resilience. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team developing models and methodologies for better explanation of neuroimaging data. This work has a broader impact than AD, it will establish an interpretable link across scales from synapses to neuronal populations (the network nodes in TVB), and significantly amplify the effectiveness of TVB in comprehending multiscale effects within brain networks. This, in turn, will facilitate the enhanced usability of digital twins in the clinical context and in diagnosing brain health status. *Open Rank Faculty Position in **Artificial Intelligence in Psychological Science* *Position Description* The Department of Psychology in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) is accepting applications for a tenure system position for a faculty member whose work interfaces with artificial intelligence (AI). Candidates with postdoctoral training or equivalent research experience are preferred, especially those who have led or contributed to multidisciplinary teams bridging psychology with computer/data science. We welcome profiles spanning: (a) ML/AI as advanced statistics; (b) core AI/generative technologies; and (c) computational social science. Strongest consideration may be given to applicants who apply modern AI pipelines and tooling to substantive psychological questions. Dear Colleagues, The 6th annual UCL NeuroAI Conference will take place on Wednesday 5 November 2025 at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London. The event features leading speakers at the cutting edge of machine learning and neuroscience. The UCL NeuroAI initiative aims to be a central hub where researchers working in neuroscience, AI, machine learning, and related fields can interact and stay updated on the latest advancements in these intersecting areas. For these reasons AI provides a means to emulate neural functions and the circuits supporting them, providing insights to aid our understanding of the brain and cognition. Equally, AI tools provide a means to discover, segment, and track distinct neural and behavioural states - yielding more efficient experiments and accelerating the pace of discovery. In turn, this understanding feeds back into the design of more effective AI architectures and models. Dear all, The first task (simple decision) has been solved by a number of participants. Most of the models were able to survive in the proposed environment for quite a long time, and one entry used the optimal decision strategy, with only 22 neurons (out of 1000 available). The challenge is still running with a new task (cued decision, which might be simpler) and a new agenda (you have two months). You'll find instructions at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules for the new task. Reminder: you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints.
