We have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to join my lab in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Mental Health at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Research in the lab is focused on the computational neuroscience of reward prediction and learning. Broadly, we study how timing, inference processes and goal selection modulate learning in reward-guided tasks in animals and humans, and how these processes are supported by neural activity in the reward learning circuits of the brain. Our goal is to understand how reward learning is altered in compulsive behaviors, addiction, and motivational deficits in disorders of mental health. We are looking for a postdoc who will use approaches from dynamical systems theory, reinforcement learning and Bayesian inference to understand how goal-directed behaviors and learning are regulated in neural circuits. The ideal candidate thinks about reward prediction and learning as dynamic processes unfolding in time and across experience, is fluent in both the theoretical and empirical approaches used in systems, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, and aims to link normative models of behavior to the dynamics of neural populations in the reward learning circuits of the brain. We are a computational group that works with a broad network of collaborating labs spanning rodent, NHP and human studies, and would suit a computational neuroscientist excited to work at the intersection of theory and experiment in an interdisciplinary research environment. Re: vision: a community-driven replication initiative for image-related neuroscience

Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce re:vision, a community-driven initiative for replicating and generalizing findings in image-related neuroscience and we'd love for you to take part. Condition-rich fMRI datasets have transformed how we study visual representations, but they rest on two assumptions: that their stimuli sample natural images broadly, and that findings generalize across that distribution. These assumptions are rarely tested directly. re:vision sets out to change that. The initiative is built on the new LAION-fMRI dataset: densely-sampled 7T fMRI responses to 25,000+ natural images, designed to cover the space of natural images at exceptional scale and diversity. Participants pick a published finding, replicate it using LAION-fMRI, and test whether it holds and generalizes. No new data collection is required, all data, preprocessed betas, and annotations are provided through our Python package. Anyone with an interest in neuroscience can participate in teams of 1 - 3 researchers. From the PI that wants to get their hands dirty again to the master's student looking for a thesis project. We advise that at least one member of your replication team has experience with fMRI analysis. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team in Surrey and Oxford, and with collaborators across the ASAP Collaborative Research Network (CRN), an international, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional network working to address high-priority research questions about Parkinson's disease, supported by ASAP, in partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF). The role We are seeking an outstanding Research Fellow to help spearhead research to understand the relationship between EEG-defined oscillations during sleep and excessive sleepiness during the daytime in people living with Parkinson's and to develop and implement neuromodulation approaches to alleviate daytime sleepiness. The project is funded by Aligning Science Across Parkinson's and the William J. Fox Foundation, and will be conducted at the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey. The research is part of a collaborative effort between researchers at the Universities of Surrey, Oxford, Harvard and Zurich. The successful applicant will, together with other researchers and clinical staff members, be responsible for conducting the clinical research protocol, analyses of EEG and behavioural data, delivering neuromodulation interventions, and preparing publications. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Neuroscience or related subject area, have experience in clinical neuroscience research and have excellent data analysis and programming skills. The successful applicant will be an active member of the Surrey Sleep Research Centre, and is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at Oxford, Harvard and Zurich. About you Crucial skills include EEG analysis and programming. Desirable skills are prior experience of working with human participants patients, particularly those with Parkinson's, dementia, or other cognitive disorders, experience in assessing cognitive function using standardised and experimental tasks, conducting non-invasive brain stimulation and/or EEG recording procedures. Postdoctoral position available in an ERC-funded project exploring deep-learning implementations of the Global Workspace theory. We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated post-doc to join our group in Toulouse, France in the Fall/Winter of 2026. The successful candidate will have a PhD and formal training in AI, Computer Science or related fields (e.g. computational neuroscience), and a keen interest in cognitive neuroscience. Our ERC Advanced Grant "GLoW" (2023-2028) aims to take inspiration from neuroscience and cognitive theories to build deep neural network models of cognition, capable of integrating or "grounding" information across sensory and linguistic modalities, and of displaying flexible cognitive behavior. BEACON 2026 brings together researchers working on multimodal representation learning, embodied and developmental models, robotics, cognitive science, and hybrid cognitive architectures. Doctoral and postdoctoral studies in the neuroscience of dynamic action planning and motor control Department of Neuroscience, University of Montreal Applications are invited for doctoral and postdoctoral studies in systems neuroscience in the laboratories of Andrea Green and Paul Cisek. Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary research group studying how the primate brain controls real-time, natural behavior in dynamic environments. Different projects address how we specify and plan potential actions such as reaching under changing conditions as we move through our environment, decide between actions even during ongoing behavior, control and learn to execute movements in different behavioral contexts (e.g., body stationary vs. in motion) and integrate multisensory cues to estimate and keep track of our motion through space. Research in our group involves single- and multi-electrode neural recording experiments in non-human primates, human behavioral studies using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and galvanic vestibular stimulation, and computational modeling of the nervous system. New collaborative projects will combine use of sophisticated spatial motion systems and virtual reality environments to study naturalistic behavior in both humans and non-human primates and develop computational models of real-time action selection, planning and control. Machine implementation of this principle began with electro-mechanical machines in the 1930s, and the earliest idea for computer implementation was probably Turing’s 1948 proposal of a computer implementation of a “pleasure-pain system”. In this talk I review what has followed Turing’s unimplemented proposal, starting with the first computer experiments in 1954, up to what we now know as modern computational RL. Short Bio: Andrew Barto is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science, University of Massachusetts Amherst, having retired in 2012. He served as Chair of the UMass Department of Computer Science from 2007 to 2011. He received a B.S. with distinction in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1970, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1975, also from the University of Michigan. He joined the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1977. Before retiring he co-directed the Autonomous Learning Laboratory at UMass Amherst, which produced many notable machine learning researchers. Professor Barto is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a Fellow and Life Member of the IEEE. He received the 2004 IEEE Neural Network Society Pioneer Award for contributions to the field of reinforcement learning, the IJCAI-17 Award for Research Excellence for groundbreaking and impactful research in both the theory and application of reinforcement learning, and a University of Massachusetts Neurosciences Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Most recently, he and his former doctoral student, Richard Sutton, were co-recipients of the 2024 Association for Computing Machinery’s A.M. Turing Award for developing the conceptual and algorithmic foundations of reinforcement learning, and he and Sutton received the 2026 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award for contributions to reinforcement learning and artificial intelligence. He has published over one hundred papers or chapters in journals, books, and conference and workshop proceedings. He is co-author with Sutton of "Reinforcement Learning: An Introduction," MIT Press, 1998. A much expanded second edition was published in 2018. In this lecture, I will revisit the classical question of spine biophysics in the new age of connectomics, where nanometer-resolution electron microscopy allows us to reconstruct whole neurons with thousands of synapses and spines. I will show how spine density, spine-neck resistance, and the irregular geometry of individual spines can shape local synaptic signals, generate fast voltage dynamics, influence excitatory/inhibitory gating, and affect communication between neighboring spines. I will then discuss how automated reconstruction pipelines and biophysical modeling now make it possible to build digital neurons at spine and synapse resolution, and how AI-based approaches, such as our new AI-based TwinProp algorithm, allow us to ask - and get answer - to a fundamental question: what can a neuron compute? Graduate student and postdoctoral positions are available in the Active Perception Laboratory (http://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu) at the University of Rochester to study the perceptual consequences of eye movements under the supervision of Dr. Martina Poletti and/or Dr. Michele Rucci. We are particularly interested in recruiting candidates interested in investigating the roles of eye movements in establishing spatial representations, the spatiotemporal dynamics of foveal and extrafoveal processing, the interplay between eye movements, retinal anatomy, and attention, and the possible roles of eye movements in emmetropization and myopia. Research in the laboratory focuses on the interaction between vision and behavior. Our work relies on the integration of theoretical and experimental approaches to investigate how visual functions unfold in the presence of normal and abnormal motor activity, how vision guides behavior, and how changes in visual input signals and modulations associated with behavior contribute to perception. The laboratory is equipped with a unique array of tools, many developed in-house, to investigate the synergy between visual, motor, and cognitive processes (https://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu/facilities.html#<https://aplab.bcs.rochester.edu/facilities.html>). Approaches include human psychophysics with precisely controlled retinal stimulation, computational modeling, precise measurements of head and eye movements, high-resolution retinal imaging, and electroencephalography (EEG) during active vision. The ideal candidate would have a strong interest in vision science, a background in related areas, and experience with data analysis and computer programming. In this talk, I will discuss how cortical circuits organize neural activity and connectivity across spatial scales, from local microcircuits to distributed cortex-wide networks. Using naturalistic multidirectional reaching in mice, combined with large-scale calcium imaging and causal connectivity mapping of >20,000,000 neuronal pairs, we identified connectivity motifs and population dynamics underlying goal-directed behavior. I will first describe the organizational principles of the motor cortex, where neurons are arranged into functional mini-columns with recurrent connectivity motifs linked to task-related activity, and discuss the potential computational advantages of this architecture. I will then show how these principles extend to larger spatial scales. Imaging ~1,000,000 neurons across 10 cortical regions revealed high-dimensional local population activity patterns alongside coordinated cortex-wide dynamics mediated by synchronized inter-areal communication. These distributed network dynamics supported high-dimensional representations of short-term memory for target location. We are pleased to announce a one-day meeting (a CCN 2026 <https://2026.ccneuro.org/> satellite event) on 1st August 2026 in New York: COMPUTATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS SCIENCE A recent explosion of interest in computational models of consciousness comes both from our attempts to extend computational models of perception and cognition to their subjective aspects and from the importance of consciousness to the ethical implications of AI models. This satellite meeting examines computational approaches from the points of view of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, with keynotes from David Chalmers (philosophy), Marisa Carrasco (psychology), and Biyu He (neuroscience). There will also be research talks from faculty, postdocs, and PhDs highlighting the contribution of computational models to our understanding of change-blindness, iconic memory, spatial perception, and visual illusions, as well as helping us to develop new measures of conscious awareness. How prefrontal dynamics reorganize to support such composition when task demands compete within a shared neural population remains unclear. Here, we developed a dual-task paradigm in mice that combined a delayed paired-association (DPA) task with an olfactory Go/No-Go (GNG) discrimination embedded in the delay period. Mice learned the dual task rapidly, with early errors dominated by false alarms on unpaired DPA trials. Interference was asymmetric: Go cues disrupted performance more than No-Go cues, pinpointing premature action rather than memory failure as the central learning bottleneck. Population calcium imaging from medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) showed that sample identity, choice tendency, and test identity occupied near-orthogonal subspaces of a shared low-dimensional manifold. As training progressed, sample representations remained stable while delay-period activity shifted away from the action-associated region. To probe the underlying circuit mechanisms, we trained low-rank recurrent neural networks on the same paradigm. Networks developed a circular manifold on which memories were stored as attractors at distinct angular positions, and test stimuli acted as compositional rotation operators, routing stored memories to appropriate actions. Dual-task training relocated mnemonic attractors to a position that a reduced geometric model identified as Pareto-optimal—revealing a fundamental tradeoff in which optimizing one task necessarily impairs the other. Consistently, optogenetic inhibition of ACC→mPFC projections during the delay displaced attractor geometry and selectively biased DPA versus GNG accuracy, matching the reduced model's prediction. Together, our results reveal how prefrontal circuits dynamically reshape attractor geometry through learning-dependent attractor fine-tuning, providing a mechanistic framework for how cortex resolves competing cognitive demands. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The postdoctoral researcher will lead a pioneering research to test the efficacy and safety of spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation to improve motor and cognitive function for children with Cerebral Palsy. This role involves: - Leading first-in-human clinical trials - Design and conduct human electrophysiology experiments - Develop computational modeling of neural networks to investigate the mechanisms underlying neurostimulation. Remarkably high turnover rates in neural connectivity have been observed under baseline conditions, and these rates increase even more significantly in response to stimulation or perturbation. However, little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms and biological function of this drastic form of brain plasticity. Since direct experiments on connectivity at the synaptic level are notoriously difficult to conduct and analyze, formal models are crucial for predicting and understanding the emergent properties of networks (or graphs) with highly dynamic structures. Building on our previous work on homeostatic structural plasticity, we have developed a new model of self-organizing networks based on the “directed configuration model.” It exhibits Hebbian plasticity (“neurons that fire together wire together”) and engram formation without specific molecular mechanisms. I will also discuss possible connections with psychological phenomena such as classical conditioning, extinction, and blocking, and describe new machine learning strategies based on self-organizing networks that can be derived from our biologically motivated theory. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The position focuses on developing interpretable AI and computational modeling frameworks to study fundamental questions in neuroscience. The postdoctoral researcher will work on projects integrating neural recordings, dynamical systems models, recurrent neural networks, and modern AI approaches to study cognition, neural dynamics, and motor control. The position will also involve close collaboration with experimental collaborators, model-data integration, generation of testable predictions, manuscript preparation, and development of preliminary results for NSF/NIH grant proposals. Candidates with backgrounds in computational neuroscience, neuroscience, applied mathematics, statistics/biostatistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Hello! Cambridge node of Open Lab project is announcing a new summer course - Open Science in Practice! The Open Science in Practice Summer School is a 5-day immersive programme held in Cambridge (UK), bringing together students and early-career researchers interested in integrating open science into their daily work. The summer school is designed for students and early-career researchers who want to explore and implement open science practices in their work. While the content is broadly applicable across disciplines, the programme is oriented towards applications in neuroscience, with hands-on workshops that will resonate especially with those working with experimental setups, behaviour tracking, and data analysis. Yet their dynamics are difficult to study directly, because high-dimensional nonlinear systems can exhibit rich behavior that is hard to summarize in terms of individual trajectories. In this talk, I will discuss an approach that seeks to understand such dynamics through the structure of the network’s equilibria. I will focus on a random balanced network of threshold-linear units that undergoes a transition from a single stable equilibrium to extensive chaos as the disorder strength crosses a critical value. Using a combination of Kac–Rice theory, replica calculations, numerical root-finding, and dynamical mean-field theory, we show that the chaotic regime contains an exponentially large number of equilibria. These equilibria are all saddles, but with only a fractionally small number of unstable directions. Surprisingly, despite the completely random connectivity, the equilibria are not scattered randomly through phase space. Instead, they are strongly correlated and confined to a comparatively small region. The chaotic attractor lies within this same region, suggesting a direct geometric link between the organization of unstable equilibria and the collective structure of the dynamics. This picture helps explain why networks with extensive chaos can nevertheless display dynamics dominated by a relatively small number of collective modes. More broadly, the results suggest that the geometry of equilibria provides a useful complementary perspective to dynamical mean-field theory for understanding high-dimensional neural dynamics. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists.
