Keynote Speaker: Anil Seth The AISB 2026 convention will follow the same overall structure as previous conventions, namely a set of co-located symposia, and we are seeking proposals for these symposia. Typical symposia last for one or two days, and can include any type of event of academic benefit: talks, posters, panels, discussions, demonstrations, outreach sessions, etc. Proposals for Symposia are welcomed in all areas of AI and cognitive science. The committee proposes the symposium, defines the area(s) and structure for it, issues calls for abstracts/papers etc., manages the process of selecting submitted papers for inclusion, and compiles an electronic file for inclusion in the convention proceedings. Proposers are welcome to submit or be involved with more than one proposal. Proposers need not already be members the AISB and will not be required to become members. They will of course be encouraged to join! Postdoc positions in nanoscale modeling of neurons, synapses or astrocytes

The Computational Neuroscience unit (https://www.oist.jp/research/research-units/cnu) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology has openings for postdoctoral researchers interested in nanoscale computational neuroscience modeling. Initial duration is two years with option to extend. We have been spearheading the development of efficient computational tools to simulate electrophysiological, molecular and cell biology processes in neurons at the nanoscale (STEPS project http://steps.sourceforge.net) Examples are detailed simulations of the molecular control of vesicle pools and their release in presynaptic terminals (Science Advances 2025) and of how morphology affects calcium transients in perisynaptic astrocytic processes. We make use of recent experimental data like single cell proteomics and super-resolution imaging of live cells. The modeling technology allows for simulation of complete neurons with their spines. We are looking for postdocs interested in pursuing questions about the function of cerebellar or hippocampal neurons, synapses or astrocytes that require nanoscale simulation. Competences: Experience in computational modeling with a recent PhD in a relevant discipline such as computational biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry. Experience in programming in Python. Fluent English conversation and writing skills. Benefits / Offer: A seniority-based salary and relocation package are offered. Traditional task- or stimulus-driven approaches align data through trial averaging and anatomical registration, but these methods fail for spontaneous activity, where no shared temporal reference exists. In this talk, I will introduce a statistical framework, called latent-aligned Restricted Boltzmann Machines, to build a common representational space from whole-brain recordings of spontaneous activity in multiple zebrafish larvae. This shared latent space, composed of spatially localized co-activation motifs or cell assemblies, allows bidirectional mapping of brain states: activity patterns from one fish can be encoded and decoded into another. The translated activity patterns retain their original spatial structure and show high plausibility within the recipient brain. We further use this shared space to segment spontaneous activity into discrete brain states and we quantify their Markovian transition statistics. Remarkably, these state-to-state dynamics are stereotyped across individuals, suggesting that spontaneous activity reflects intrinsic computational priors of neural processing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. The proposed project sits a the interface of computational neuroscience and neuromorphic computing, and is embedded within a strong network of European academic and industrial partners. ENVIRONMENT: The student will be part of the Theoretical Neuroscience lab <https://www.machenslab.org/>, led by Christian Machens, which is hosted at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Lisbon, Portugal. The Champalimaud Foundation <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/> is a private, non-profit institute with a vibrant and highly international academic community. Many groups work in the field of systems and computational neuroscience, <https://www.fchampalimaud.org/champalimaud-research> providing a stimulating and exciting work environment. The student will also interact with the training network ELEVATE <https://www.elevate-dn.eu/index.php/about/> and spend several months at Rodolphe Sepulchre <https://sites.google.com/site/rsepulchre/>‘s lab at KU Leuven, Belgium. PROJECT: Across the animal world, biological networks are made up of different types of neurons. The most prominent division is that between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neurons. However, modern AI system as well as most neuromorphic systems ignore this division and assume only one type of neuron. In this project, we will study the specific functional or structural qualities arising from a division into E and I neurons, and work out any potential benefits. One key design feature of networks with E and I neurons is that they are composed of intrinsically unstable subsystems, namely recurrently connected E neurons, that are controlled and stabilized by other subsystems, namely I neurons. The benefits of designing and controlling intrinsically unstable systems have long been known to engineers in other context, e.g., the desing of modern fighter aircraft. The goal of this project is to use some of these engineering insights in order to investigate how the interplay of excitation and inhibition can be utilized to perform specific computations. Since real neurons communicate with discrete events (spikes), a key aim is to work out the distinct computational roles of inhibitory and excitatory spikes, and apply the concepts to a few example systems. TASKS: * Study the relevant background literature from both engineering and neuroscience fields. Based on geometric and analytical insights from the framework of ‘spike coding networks’, develop analytical or geometric methods to study the roles of excitatory and inhibitory spikes. Develop a few canonical systems and use numerical simulations to demonstrate the role of excitatory and inhibitory populations in computational tasks. * Publish research articles, regular participation in top international conferences to present your work. * Complete an internship at KU Leuven with Prof. Rodolphe Sepulchre * Participate in yearly retreats organized by the doctoral network participants * Support the dissemination of software tools and concepts. SALARY AND CONDITIONS: The salary and benefits will follow standard EU rules. PhD students will receive their degree from the NOVA University of Lisbon. Proposed Project: Reinforcement Learning and Microzones in the Cerebellum The crystalline structure of the cerebellar cortex has inspired the development of theories and computational models of learning in the cerebellum. In these computational models, learning is typically based on long-term depression (LTD) between parallel fibres and Purkinje cells in cerebellar cortex. More recently, however, plasticity has been shown to be present at different types of cerebellar synapses, and recent observations of reward signals conveyed by both mossy fibres and climbing fibres to the cerebellar cortex indicate that the roles of the instructive signals for cerebellar plasticity are more complex than assumed by classic theories. The presence of reward signals suggests that the cerebellum may be involved in reinforcement learning, by predicting the consequences of different actions. A further level of complexity arises from the existence of alternating cerebellar microzones that have been shown to contribute in different ways to cerebellar learning. The proposed PhD project will extend a previously developed detailed network model of the cerebellum. Simulations of the network model will be used to investigate the implications of reward signals and microzones for cerebellar learning. The work will contribute to a better understanding of learning in the cerebellum with potential applications in machine learning and neurorobotics. Applicants should have a keen interest in computational neuroscience and an excellent first degree or MSc in computer science, neuroscience, AI, machine learning, physics, maths, biology, medicine or a related discipline. The postdoc will be based at Aix-Marseille University, at the Institut of Systems Neuroscience <https://ins-amu.fr/> in Marseille and will work under the lead of Spase Petkoski, INSERM CR (tenured researcher, equivalent to an Associate Professor), part of the Theoretical Neuroscience group led by Viktor Jirsa. A close collaboration is also envisaged with the clinical practitioners from the Neurology department of the public hospital at Marseille (APHM), the neurologists Mira Didic and Olivier Felician who work with patients with dementia, as well as with JF Mangin, the head of neuroimaging at Neurospin in Paris. As a postdoctoral researcher, the candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing computational models for the molecular mechanism of pathological proteins in AD into the whole-brain neuroinformatics platform The Virtual Brain <https://www.thevirtualbrain.org/tvb/zwei/> (TVB). Specifically, this will be done through glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses, utilizing existing neuronal mass candidates from the literature and from the previous work by the group. The model will also combine the mechanisms of prion-propagation. The modeling work will be accompanied by resting-state fMRI data analysis to identify the biomarkers of interest. The main cohort for the project will be Memento <http://www.memento-cohort.org/>, but ADNI3 <https://adni.loni.usc.edu/data-samples/adni-data/> will be also used. The candidate is thus expected to be familiar with concepts from Nonlinear Dynamics, in particular, solving and analyzing coupled ordinary differential equations. In the later stage, the project will also require an application of model inversion with simulation-based inference that should facilitate establishing links between the model parameter space and the neuroimaging data features. The latter will be a key component of this project and will also require addressing issues related to model degeneracy and resilience. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team developing models and methodologies for better explanation of neuroimaging data. This work has a broader impact than AD, it will establish an interpretable link across scales from synapses to neuronal populations (the network nodes in TVB), and significantly amplify the effectiveness of TVB in comprehending multiscale effects within brain networks. This, in turn, will facilitate the enhanced usability of digital twins in the clinical context and in diagnosing brain health status. Candidates with postdoctoral training or equivalent research experience are preferred, especially those who have led or contributed to multidisciplinary teams bridging psychology with computer/data science. This was for good scientific reasons. First, there was a drive to isolate individual causes of behaviours and therefore to carefully control the environments in which children behaved during a study. Moreover, the equipment required to assess the neural correlates of behaviours were cumbersome and difficult to move so children's mobility had to be restricted. Recent developments in wearable and wifi-enhanced technologies have now allowed us to literally "untether" children and explore their brain and behaviour as they move around and interact naturally. This has opened new avenues for research, but has equally revealed important new challenges to the way that we approach developmental sciences. In this seminar, I will draw on my lab's recent work on children's sensory cue integration, neural synchrony during children's collaborative problem solving and the trials and tribulations of translating basic cognitive neuroscience research into real-world effective classroom interventions to highlight some of the challenges that contemporary developmental sciences faces. Short Bio: Professor Denis Mareschal is Director of the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, at Birkbeck University of London, and a founding member of the Centre for Educational Neuroscience. After completing a BA in Natural Science at Cambridge, he moved on to studying learning -- initially in the form of an MA in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at McGill in Montreal, Canada and then through completing a DPhil in Psychology at Oxford. Professor Mareschal's research has focussed on identifying the mechanisms of learning and development in infancy and childhood through the combined use of behavioural studies, computational modelling and neuroimaging. He has received a number of awards for his work, including the Marr Prize from the Cognitive Science Society, the Young Investigator Award from the International Congress on Infant Studies and the Margaret Donaldson Prize from the BPS Developmental Section. Over the last 10 years he has led the UnLocke project (Unlocke.org) developing a neuroscience-based primary school maths and science education intervention. He is committed to taking neuroscience out of the lab and into the real-world, in terms of primary research and in terms of translational impact. Dear computational neuroscientists, We are happy to announce the *Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in Robotics *that will take place in Ventura (USA), January 11-16 2026. Deadline approaching for Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025

Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of this seminal paper, Biological Cybernetics invites submissions to a special article collection on the topic “Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025.” Whether you have contributed to past research in this area and would like to write a retrospective review, or if you are actively pursuing new research building on spike timing, we encourage you to submit an article to this collection. *NITMB is seeking early-career researchers who have interest in transforming biological research and inspiring new mathematical discoveries. * This opportunity is open to researchers who want to develop mathematical, theoretical, and computational approaches to study any area of biology. NITMB Fellows conduct independent research programs, in collaboration with NITMB faculty members or others outside the Institute, focused on developing new mathematics and statistics relevant to challenges in biology. This call is aimed at young scientists trained in mathematical, computational, and theoretical biology and related disciplines with exceptional research promise and with an interest in exploring new opportunities and challenges emerging from biological phenomena. Prior experience with biology is a plus but not required. The Fellows will be part of a large endeavor to build new bridges between mathematics, theory, and biological disciplines. Applicants will need to have completed a doctoral degree by September 1, 2026 in one of the following fields: Mathematical and Physical Sciences Biological Sciences Computer Science Engineering or related fields This three-year postdoctoral fellowship offers a competitive salary and a generous research budget. The group develops models and statistical tools to investigate how complex dynamics and computations emerge from the coordinated activity of neurons in large-scale cortical circuits. Depending on the candidate’s interests, projects may range from theoretical work to the analysis of experimental data from partner laboratories. Our group is part of the Data Science and Machine Learning initiative at SISSA. SISSA is an elite postgraduate research institution in Mathematics, Physics, and Neuroscience.
