LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling—from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction—and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain–machine interfaces. The program combines *morning lectures* on theory, *afternoon tutorials* using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and *evening group project work*, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: *20 years of LASCON*. Since its first edition in 2006, the school has become a recognized international initiative in computational neuroscience training, attracting students from Latin America and beyond. Over the years, LASCON has welcomed participants from all continents, and its alumni (278 to date) have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry worldwide. To celebrate this anniversary, LASCON 2026 will feature the largest faculty in the school’s history, with lectures and tutorials covering a wide spectrum of subfields in computational neuroscience. Doctoral position in Theoretical Biophysics (Deadline : 1st November 2025) We are seeking a doctoral student with a quantitative background. Ideally, the candidate should have a master degree in physics but other quantitative backgrounds will be considered. The researcher will be based in the Integrative Biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour, located in Konstanz, Germany. The group focuses on a diverse set of theoretical biophysics problems. The doctoral project is a collaboration between the integrative biophysics research group and the research group of Prof. Ilya Nemenman at Emory University, Altanta, US. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to have research stays at Emory University. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. The Smith lab at the University of Minnesota is seeking a motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to study the development of large-scale networks in the developing brain. Our lab employs optical approaches to study the mechanisms of cortical network formation in the developing brain. We have recently obtained funding to use wide-field and 2-photon optogenetics to investigate how perturbations of early network function impact development. This PhD programme is designed to immerse students in both experimental and theoretical thinking, providing a rigorous preparation for an interdisciplinary research career. Courses in the first year provide a comprehensive introduction to systems neuroscience, theoretical/computational neuroscience, and machine learning. Students will be part of the broader trainee cohort across both centres, interacting and engaging in scientific discussion with both SWC and GCNU researchers with equal emphasis. The mission of CCN is to develop theories, models, and computational methods that deepen our knowledge of brain function. CCN takes a vertically-integrated “systems" neuroscience approach, building models that are motivated by fundamental principles, that are constrained by properties of neural circuits and responses, and that provide insights into perception, cognition and behavior. This cross-disciplinary approach not only leads to the design of new model-driven scientific experiments, but also encapsulates current functional descriptions of the brain that can spur the development of new engineered computational systems, especially in the realm of machine learning. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, FRFs are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. FRFs also have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. FRF positions are two-year appointments and are generally renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). Study infant behavior in three scenarios: (i) spontaneous behavior, (ii) reaching to touch, (iii) reaching to visual targets. 2. Apply AI-based tools to extract motion trajectories from infant videos. 3. Refine and advance theories of body know-how development. The group offers a unique datasetof infant behavioral recordings, combined with state-of-the-art AI tools for automatic movement analysis. While the focus is behavioral, the project may also involve brain imaging (iEEG in adults, fNIRS in infants). This Special Issue<https://app.jove.com/fr/methods-collections/4215/dynamical-systems-approach…>, “Dynamics in Complex Systems: From Neurosciences to Psychiatry”, explores how dynamical systems models can illuminate the complex, time-evolving processes underlying brain function and psychiatric disorders. From molecular interactions to large-scale brain networks and symptom dynamics, contributions will address how non-linear, multi-scale dynamics shape cognition, behavior, and mental health. We invite original research, reviews, and methodological papers focusing on dynamic processes across scales, including neural network oscillations, brain-behavior interactions, symptom networks in psychiatry, and clinical time-series analyses. Emphasis is placed on integrative approaches that bridge basic neuroscience and clinical applications. Both new results and methodological articles will be considered. First, an author submits a manuscript, including a step-by-step protocol. Authors can provide some suggestions of relevant recent JoVE videos (2022-2025) based on their planned review topic for the playlist. If accepted, those that require a video will be turned into a script by our PhD-level science writers. A videographer will then come to your location for one day and film your protocol or video.
