Postdoctoral position for the development of large-scale electrophysiological data management infrastructure 2-year position: $62,500/year plus benefits (~ total $75,000/year) This salary is guaranteed by a partnership between the Department of Neurosciences (https://neurosciences.umontreal.ca<https://neurosciences.umontreal.ca/>), the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal (https://medecine.umontreal.ca<https://medecine.umontreal.ca/>) and IVADO (https://ivado.ca<https://ivado.ca/>), an interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral research, training and knowledge mobilization consortium whose mission is to develop and promote a robust, reasoning and responsible AI. Requirements: The applicant should hold a PhD (e.g. electrical or biomedical engineering, neurosciences, or complementary field) and have research expertise in system neuroscience, programming, and data processing and analyses. Major advances in electrophysiological recording technologies have led to an explosion in the size of datasets, as well as new challenges in processing and managing them. In particular, the advent of wireless large-scale neurophysiology and deep-learning-based pose estimation enables us to study new scientific questions on complex, unconstrained behaviors. As the pace at which we acquire data has accelerated exponentially in recent years, there is an urgent need for efficient automated pipelines to process raw data from labs into analysis-ready datasets. These goals are closely aligned with those of the Union Neuroscience et Intelligence artificielle Quebec (UNIQUE; https://www.unique.quebec<https://www.unique.quebec/>) center, the strategic research cluster of the Fonds de Recherche du Quebec - Nature et Technologie (FRQ-NT), IVADO and the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute (Mila; https://mila.quebec<https://mila.quebec/>). The main objective of the present position is to develop and deploy automated approaches to process signals from the labs into analysis-ready datasets. The postdoctoral trainee will design and develop automated processing pipelines, from raw data collected in the labs to analysis-ready state, for each type of data collected. The pipeline must adapt and enhance our current tools implemented in Matlab, R or Python. This includes incorporating automated spike sorting tools such as MountainSort, KiloSort, and Full Binary Pursuit, handling local field potential signals with software like Chronux and FieldTrip, as well as creating user interfaces. The postdoctoral trainee will be responsible for creating Standard Operating Procedures and lead user training. This position is a great opportunity for a postdoctoral trainee seeking training at the intersection of academia and industry. The candidate should have adequate training in disciplines such as engineering, data sciences, machine-learning or neurosciences. PhD position available At the Institute of Advanced Simulation (IAS-6) at the Research Center Juelich a PhD position is available in the field of Computational Neuroscience to investigate cross-area interactions in the visuo-motor pathway of non-human primates during a visually guided motor task. The data are provided by our experimental partners at INT, CNRS, Marseille. Simultaneous electrophysiological recordings by multiple Utah electrode arrays implanted in V1, V2, V4, 7a, DP and M1 will be studied driven by predictions from theory and network modeling to gain a mechanistic understanding of cross-area interaction signatures. Open Ph.D Position in Computational Neuroscience: Neural Representation of Affective States

The Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience Analyses (LINA), directed by Dr. Christian O’Reilly, is looking to fill an open Ph.D. position in Computational Neuroscience. This position will be fully funded for its first two years by a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) on an NSF project titled “Neural representation of affective states during narrative listening across the lifespan”. The extension of the funding will depend on grant renewal. The preferred starting date is on May 16th, 2025. The project: This project investigates the representations of affect (valence and arousal) across brain regions and frequencies from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) as a function of age and sex. This project aims to 1) map fMRI activations associated with affect during narrative listening; 2) take advantage of the high temporal resolution of EEG to refine our understanding of the spectral property of affect encoding; 3) develop a model of affect to uncover the mechanisms and causal relationships in the affective neural networks. The students selected for this position will concentrate mostly on the two last aims (EEG analyses and modeling of causal relationships) but will collaborate with the teams on every aspect of the project. ICICIP2025 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of research and applications in related fields. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher familiar with machine learning, ideally neural networks implemented with pytorch, to work on unsupervised transfer learning for biomedical time series. In our group, 'Biomedical Machine Learning' (BIML) at Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University, we have recently begun developing a new method for unsupervised transfer learning, which we have been testing on wearable EEG data (we are closely connected with the Center for ear-EEG). The results are very promising, though there exist multiple challenges still before we have realized the method's full potential. We are now looking to fill a 1-year post doc position to continue this work. Work is on-going to secure additional funding for extending the position further. The primary requirement for the candidate is familiarity with deep learning (ideally the pytorch framework), though experience with transfer learning, or EEG data, or sleep monitoring, is a plus. The SAMP lab explores brain organization and experience-dependent plasticity by studying people born blind, deaf, or without hands, using behavioral, computational, and fMRI state-of-the-art analytical techniques. The successful applicant will work on the topic of motor plasticity in people born without hands. Specifically, the project will test how people born without hands engage the motor hierarchy to perform everyday actions with their feet. A large dataset has already been collected to address these questions, and additional data can be collected. Dear Computational Neuroscience Community, I would like to point you to a potentially useful Python Package that might be of interest for your research, especially in the realm dynamical models and spreading dynamics on networks. "ser": S(usceptible)E(xcited)R(efractory) model on graphs, a dynamical model of spreading excitations. Code Repository: https://github.com/fabridamicelli/ser As of today, a few people already trust it and the package registers >11K total downloads, ~500/month (pypi.org) and has been used already in a few research projects. PhD position in Göttingen: Optogenetics in the Retina and Computational Neuroscience

A PhD position is available in the lab of Tim Gollisch at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany. The PhD project will investigate how optogenetics can be used for vision restoration therapy to treat blindness. The work will involve multielectrode arrays to record spiking activity from isolated retinas of mice that express light-sensitive ion channels in different cell types of the retina. Furthermore, computational tools will be used for model-driven data analysis and assessment of neural coding under optogenetic stimulation. Prior experience with electrophysiology or computational analyses/computer programming will be considered advantageous for the application. The project is part of the newly founded Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Optogenetic Therapies (https://ekfz.uni-goettingen.de/) and will contribute to bringing optogenetic vision restoration towards clinical trials and patient treatment. In particular, the successful candidate will investigate the dynamics of formation of human memory using intracranial single-unit electrophysiological recordings, high resolution 7-Tesla imaging and invasive electrical brain stimulation in neurosurgical epilepsy patients. Project Description The aim of the main project is to characterize the behavioral and electrophysiological effects of deep-brain stimulation (DBS) in the human entorhinal cortex during the formation of spatial and non-spatial episodic memory. The research will involve: * designing cognitive tasks for investigating the neurophysiological dynamics of mnemonic discrimination; * recording local field potentials and single-unit activity from intracranial electrodes in neurosurgical epilepsy patients during the execution of cognitive tasks; * applying DBS to the entorhinal cortex during the execution of cognitive tasks; * applying existing analysis techniques and developing new ones for understanding how DBS alters mnemonic discrimination; * applying image segmentation techniques on 7-T MRI data to localize intracranial electrodes with high-resolution. Key Responsibilities * Interacting with patients and record intracranial electrophysiological data. * Conduct high-quality research in cognitive electrophysiology and neuroengineering, by validating or disproving current theories about human episodic memory formation and maintenance. * Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, including PhD students, postdocs, medical technicians and doctors. * Present research findings at national and international meetings, and publish results in high-visibility scientific journals. Our research seeks to understand how neural information processing under noisy and resource-constrained conditions allows the brain to efficiently perform computational tasks and control relevant behaviors. *This position <https://biology.ucsd.edu/jobs/postdoc#Computational/Theoretical-Neuro>* will involve the analysis of neural activity data (calcium imaging or electrophysiology) collected by our collaborators, as well as theoretical modeling of learning and task performance in neural networks. *Our research group <https://bennalab.biosci.ucsd.edu/people/>* is part of the vibrant Department of Neurobiology at UCSD, which is highly collegial, and offers many opportunities for collaborations, both formal and informal. ICICIP2025 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of research and applications in related fields. The first segment, scheduled for September 19-20, 2024, will be conducted exclusively online, featuring virtual presentations. Historically, various forms of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been proposed as simplified models of the cortex. Recently, due to remarkable advancements in machine learning, RNNs' ability to capture temporal dependencies has been used to develop tools for approximating unknown dynamical systems by training them on observed time-series data. This approach allows us to use time series of electrophysiological multi-single unit recordings as well as whole brain ultra-high field functional imaging (fMRI) to parametrize neuronal population dynamics and build functional models of cognitive functions. The objective of this research project is to investigate the neuronal mechanisms underlying the reinforcement and depreciation of perceived stimuli in the extended network of the mouse forebrain regions. Research team and environment The PhD student will carry out his/her/their studies primarily at the BioRobotics Institute of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. The project will expose the student to a highly international and interdisciplinary context, in tight collaboration with theoretical and experimental neuroscientists in Italy and abroad. At the BioRobotics Institute, the research groups involved will be the Brain Dynamics Lab, the Computational Neuroengineering Lab, and the Bioelectronics and Bioengineering Area. Title: From Theory to Practice: Overcoming Challenges in Implementing AI-Based CDSSs in Healthcare Abstract: In recent years, the adoption of computer-assisted tools employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has increased in several fields. These tools, which harness machine-learning and deep-learning architectures, have been pivotal in Medicine with the development of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs). CDSSs are designed to assist clinicians in critical healthcare processes, where understanding the decision-making process and ensuring system reliability are paramount. Despite the potential of data-driven AI, its application in medicine remains fraught with challenges, including the creation of high-performing yet non-interpretable CDSSs. Consequently, only a few CDSSs have transitioned from theoretical frameworks to clinical practice. Several factors hinder this transition: insufficient clinician involvement in data preparation, limited datasets, a lack of external validation, etc. The engagement of clinicians in model interpretation is crucial, as relying solely on accuracy metrics raises significant concerns about the models' validity. Regulatory agencies have responded by proposing frameworks and guidelines such as the GDPR and the AI Act to address concerns about applications of machine learning models. This presentation aims to elucidate these critical challenges and provide recommendations for implementing reliable CDSS. In particular, the discussion will focus on achieving explainability in AI models, highlighting the importance of transparent and interpretable results. The concept of Trustworthy AI is central to this integration, emphasizing that explainability, one of the key features in trustworthy AI, is essential for developers to technically validate results, for clinicians to align models with clinical literature, and for patients to understand the decisions. The presentation will cover methods to achieve explainability in both shallow and deep learning architectures, considering tabular and image inputs. Additionally, a new paradigm addressing the accuracy-explainability trade-off will be discussed, offering insights into future developments in this field. Short Bio: Francesco Prinzi received his Ph.D. in biomedicine, neuroscience and advanced diagnostics in 2023, University of Palermo. He is currently Assistant Professor at University of Palermo and affiliated with the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge (UK). Postdoc in neuroscience of reward learning The successful candidate will work with Prof. Todd Hare and other SNS Lab researchers on the neuro-computational basis of human learning and decision making using cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques. For example, the successful candidate will work on a project aimed to determine if reward learning and corresponding striatal responses incorporate causal knowledge during Pavlovian conditioning. Using theoretically grounded and empirically verified reward learning predictions – blocking, conditioned inhibition, and overexpectation – we will test how Pavlovian conditioning operates over stimuli that are known to be either causal generators or correlated predicters of reward outcomes. Knowledge of the causal mechanisms should, in principle, determine how a reward learning agent summates predictions over two or more conditioned stimuli and whether a specific conditioned inhibitor will block a given causal state. We will test these hypotheses using modified versions of the standard conditioned inhibition and overexpectation paradigms together with functional neuroimaging. The results of these studies will provide important new insights into the fundamental nature of reward learning. The Theoretical Neuroscience Group of the University of Bern is seeking applications for a PhD position, funded by a Swiss National Science Foundation grant titled “Why Spikes?”. This project aims at answering a nearly century-old question in Neuroscience: “What are spikes good for?”. Indeed, since the discovery of action potentials by Lord Adrian in 1926, it has remained largely unknown what the benefits of spiking neurons are, when compared to analog neurons. Traditionally, it has been argued that spikes are good for long-distance communication or for temporally precise computation. However, there is no systematic study that quantitatively compares the communication as well as the computational benefits of spiking neuron w.r.t analog neurons. The aim of the project is to systematically quantify the benefits of spiking at various levels by developing and analyzing appropriate mathematical models. The PhD student will be supervised by Prof. Jean-Pascal Pfister (Theoretical Neuroscience Group, Department of Physiology, University of Bern). The project will involve close collaborations within a highly motivated team as well as regular exchange of ideas with the other theory groups at the institute. The PhD candidates should hold a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience or a related field. She/he should have keen interests in developing theories that can be tested experimentally. Preference will be given to candidates with strong mathematical and programming skills. In this year's Brain-Score Competition 2024, we are closing the loop on testing model predictions by rewarding those benchmarks that show where models are the least aligned to the primate visual ventral stream. The Competition is open to the scientific community and we provide an infrastructure to evaluate a variety of models on new behavioral and neural benchmarks in a standardized and unified manner. In addition, we will incentivize benchmark submissions by providing visibility to participants and a $10,000 prize pool<https://www.brain-score.org/competition/#tracks> to the winning benchmarks. Competition Tracks * Behavioral: This track will reward those benchmarks that show-case model short-comings in predicting behavior (human or non-human primate). The winning submissions will be the behavioral benchmarks with the lowest model scores, mean-averaged over all models, i.e. as close as possible to 0. The benchmarks can target any behavioral task that the models engage on (labeling, class probabilities, odd-one-out ; see the model interface<https://brain-score.readthedocs.io/en/latest/modules/model_interface.html#b…>). 1st prize: $3,000; 2nd prize: $2,000. * Neural: This track will reward those benchmarks that show-case model short-comings in predicting neural activity across the primate visual ventral stream.
