PhD Position — Digital Twins for Brain Health Neuroscience PhD Program (Health Sciences), University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), Palma de Mallorca, Spain. https://edoctorat.uib.es/es/doctorat/TNEU/ We offer a fully funded PhD position focused on developing biophysical digital twins using M/EEG and fMRI data for large-scale in silico treatment evaluation in aging, neurodegenerative, and other brain conditions. This is a fully computational PhD involving intensive modelling and data analysis, combining computational neuroscience and precision medicine for in silico treatment discovery. The project uses large international clinical datasets (>6000 participants) and aims to develop model-based markers of treatment susceptibility with a focus in heterogeneous populations. Research will take place at IFISC (UIB–CSIC), a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence internationally recognized for research in complex systems, dynamical systems, statistical physics, and network science, with applications ranging from neuroscience and biology to social and technological systems. The project will be developed in collaboration with research groups from the Department of Psychology at the University of the Balearic Islands, with access to HPC resources and an international collaboration network including INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, Trinity College Dublin, Imperial College London, BrainLat, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Paris Brain Institute, among others. Profile: quantitative background (physics, math, computer science, data science, neuroscience, quantitative psychology, engineering, biomedicine or related), Python programming, statistics, data analysis, and autonomous working style. As part of the DFG Cluster of Excellence "The Adaptive Mind" (TAM), a four-year PhD-student position is available in the lab of Constantin Rothkopf at TU Darmstadt. In TAM (https://theadaptivemind-excellencecluster.de/) the universities of Giessen, Marburg, and Darmstadt, in collaboration with the University of Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), conduct interdisciplinary research in mind, brain, and behavior. We combine state-of-the-art behavioral and neurophysiological research with approaches from psychiatry and clinical psychology, as well as quantitative analyses and computational modeling using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. We measure and model the continuous adaptation of natural human behavior in a constantly changing and unpredictable world. Possible research directions include human navigation under uncertainty, active learning and active sensing, sensorimotor control and intuitive physics, and causal reasoning in natural behavior. Our research environment includes large-scale VR and naturalistic experimental setups, infrastructure for tracking eye and body movements, strong collaborations in cognitive science, neuroscience, and AI, and access to excellent computing infrastructure. Our group (https://www.pip.tu-darmstadt.de) is part of the Centre for Cognitive Science and the AI Center at TU Darmstadt, which are home to an internationally outstanding group of PIs and junior researchers working in the areas of computational cognitive science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The project combines two-photon imaging, electrophysiology and optogenetic manipulation of different cell types and neural projections in visual and decision-making brain areas to understand how mice learn to become experts in different visually-guided decision-making tasks and flexibly switch attention between tasks. However, across the first year their visual attention abilities undergo changes, dramatically altering what and how they learn. Adopting a developmental cascade framework, I will describe how infants’ attention changes during the first year, and how those changes are shaped by other developmental changes and how changes in visual attention contribute to development in other domains. Short Bio: Lisa Oakes received her BA in Psychology from UCSD and PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. After 15 years as a faculty member at the department of psychology at the University of Iowa, she moved to UC Davis where she is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and a Faculty Researcher at the Center for Mind and Brain. Dr. Oakes’s work examines cognitive development in infancy, with a particular focus on visual cognitive processes including perception, categorization, and attention. She has written over 100 articles and chapters, edited three volumes, and with David Rakison wrote Developmental cascades: Building the infant mind, which was the 2022 winner of the Eleanor Maccoby Book Award in Developmental Psychology awarded by APA Division 7. She recently wrote a textbook on infant development with Vanessa Lobue and Marianella Casasola entitled Infancy: The development of the whole child. She is the past-president of the International Congress of Infant Studies and currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the journal Infancy. The project investigates how complex neural dynamics support information processing in the brain by combining computational analysis of neural recordings with mechanistic modeling of neural circuits. The recruited researcher will primarily develop spiking network models to study how transient oscillatory activity shapes information flow, trajectory selection, and attention-like weighting of sequential inputs in distributed neural systems. In parallel, they will contribute to the analysis of hippocampal electrophysiological recordings collected during behavior, linking neuronal assemblies and oscillatory patterns to behavior and working memory. Depending on interests and progress, the work may also extend to the study of interactions between the hippocampus and its wider brain network using large-scale neural recordings, or to the comparison between control and pathological mouse models. PhD opening on hybrid connectome-based / AI simulations of resting state activiy

Dear all, We are happy to announce the opening of a PhD position in the group of Dr. Demian Battaglia within the Functional System Dynamics team at the University of Strasbourg, France ( [ https://funsyteam.org/ | https://funsyteam.org/ ] ). The recruited graduate student will work in close collaboration with the group of Dr. Laura Harsan and the IMIS team at the University Hospital of Strasbourg, specialized in rodent and human neuroimaging. The project aims to develop new approaches for modeling large-scale brain activity by combining mechanistic connectome-based models with modern machine-learning methods. Mean-field brain models grounded in structural connectivity provide mechanistic interpretability and allow researchers to reverse-engineer the dynamical principles underlying brain activity, but they remain simplified and only partially faithful to empirical data. In contrast, artificial neural networks can achieve high predictive accuracy when modeling neural time series, yet they are often difficult to interpret mechanistically. The project will explore the concept of a “hybrid twin,” a modeling framework that couples mechanistic brain models with data-driven neural networks to jointly achieve interpretability and empirical fidelity. These methods will be applied to the analysis of rodent and human fMRI data across multiple pathological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Down syndrome, and alcohol use disorder. We are seeking candidates with a background in computational neuroscience, computer science, physics, mathematics, or related fields, and a strong motivation to work on digital neurohealth applications. Our school is divided in five blocks: - *3D printing*, where you will have an opportunity to learn the theory necessary to take full advantage of this technique and how to use Autodesk Fusion software to design elements of your behavioural setup - *Electronics and Arduino*, that is intended to provide the skills necessary to understand the design of devices used in behavioural research; it will also teach how to build and program such devices - among others, optogenetics laser controllers, automated doors, stimulus delivery systems and devices used for synchronizing data streams - *Bonsai* module that aims at teaching you how to use Bonsai to track your animals, conduct closed-loop experiments with Arduino and analyze your data - *Deeplabcut* *and machine learning*, where you will gain an in-depth understanding of the DL tools used in behavioural science and learn how to apply them to extract interesting information from your data - *Project* is the module where you will apply all the knowledge gained during the course to build a 3D-printed setup for studying phototactic behaviour in Drosophila, conduct experiments and analyze the data School will be also composed of a series of lectures by researchers studying animal behaviour on different model systems and with different approaches. The lab’s research has focused on probing specific visual dimensions in the context of face, animacy, and object representations more generally. We collect and analyse human behavioural and brain imaging (fMRI and M/EEG) data. We also analyse macaque electrophysiology data obtained through collaborations and perform cross-species comparisons. We use machine learning techniques for neural data analysis and computational modelling with a special interest in biologically-inspired deep learning and AI models (NeuroAI). The computational models we work with include vision deep learning models (including topographical, recurrent, or developmentally inspired models), multimodal vision and language models, and Large Language Models. However, many of today’s wearable computing and human–machine interfaces still feel “smart, yet not quite helpful.” They are often fragmented, difficult to personalize, and frequently struggle to transform rich but noisy multimodal signals, such as physiology (e.g., heart rate, neural/muscle activity), body movement, and environmental context, into reliable, meaningful real-world support. At the same time, generative AI and foundation/world models are reshaping the landscape, shifting the paradigm beyond isolated sensors and single-purpose algorithms toward integrated, adaptive, context-aware Human–AI–Machine systems. To make the use of these technologies feel like a natural extension of ourselves, this workshop brings together researchers and practitioners across biosensing and measurement, neuroscience, AI, robotics, ubiquitous computing, and human-centered design to define the next frontier of Empowered Co-Intelligence: wearable interfaces that fuse three complementary “intelligences”—(1) biological intelligence, to infer human state and intent by modeling how people naturally think and behave; (2) physical/embodied intelligence, which understands body dynamics and real-world physics so interaction and assistance remain safe and effective; and (3) spatial intelligence, to leverage nearby sensors, IoT devices and smart environments for continuous situational awareness. These capabilities are further amplified by generative AI—models trained on large-scale data that can integrate heterogeneous signals to predict, reason, and adapt—enabling systems to become more personalized and context-aware. Together, these capabilities can overcome the limits of noisy on-body sensing and constrained wearable computing by turning fragmented measurements into coherent, actionable assistance. Our vision is an AI that operates quietly in the background, like an invisible layer of artificial cortex, running in parallel with our own cerebral cortex and coordinating across different lobes: not simply following rules, but learning your patterns, anticipating your needs, and adjusting in real time. The result is 24/7 support for thinking, decision-making, and physical action that feels intuitive, seamless, and requires minimal cognitive effort. Beyond new algorithms, we also emphasize human-centered evaluation, trust, accessibility, and inclusive augmentation, with the goal of accelerating research that advances wearable computing into reliable, scalable, and equitable systems—technologies that truly co-evolve with users over time. Postdoctoral Position in Electrophysiology and Computational Modeling of Language (Start date: by June 1, 2026) The NeuroCognition of Language Lab (PI: Gina Kuperberg), jointly based at Tufts University and the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston), invites applications for a fully funded, two-year postdoctoral position. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with an intended start date of June 1, 2026 This position offers opportunities to pursue theory-driven research at the intersection of psycholinguistics, computational neuroscience, and electrophysiology. We are especially interested in applicants whose expertise aligns with one or more of the following areas: 1. Electrophysiology and predictive processing in sentence and discourse comprehension Using MEG and/or EEG to characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics of predictive processing during real-time language comprehension, with an emphasis on sentence- and discourse-level mechanisms. 2. Computational modeling of comprehension Developing mechanistic models (e.g., predictive coding simulations), and linking model behavior to behavioral and neural signatures of comprehension. We are also interested in decision-making and confidence-updating frameworks that formalize how comprehenders evaluate uncertainty, accumulate error evidence, and engage reprocessing following linguistic errors. 3. Language production in schizophrenia and computational language analysis Analyzing large-scale corpora of patient speech, using computational language methods, including Large Language Models (LLMs), to quantify and understand disorganized language production in schizophrenia. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in cognitive science, psycholinguistics, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, computational neuroscience, or a related field. Candidates may be strongest in one area (electrophysiology, computational modeling, or NLP/LLM-based language analysis), while demonstrating interest in the broader research program. We are seeking a researcher interested in establishing themselves as an independent PI under a 2–3 year contract in Portugal, to develop and lead a research line in NeuroAI and Visual Computation at the University of Coimbra. The successful candidate will build an independent program at the intersection of computational neuroscience and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on visual processing. We are particularly interested in candidates working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biological vision, including research on diffusion models and generative AI; GANs and large-scale visual generative systems; representation learning and mid-level visual features; image synthesis, transformation, and model interpretability; Computational accounts of object and scene representations; and testing alignment between artificial and biological vision systems. The candidate will have full access to newly acquired local GPU and CPU computational infrastructure, as well as institutional high-performance computing facilities. A central component of the position will involve leveraging human neuroimaging data — particularly fMRI (3T, with potential access to 7T) — to test and constrain computational models of visual representation and generative systems. We are especially interested in researchers aiming to establish an independent research group (seed funding may be available) and who adopt a strong fundamental science perspective grounded in cognitive science and systems neuroscience. The ideal candidate will integrate large-scale modeling approaches with empirical neural data to advance mechanistic accounts of visual cognition. Probabilistic graphical models promise a principled way to uncover latent factors as such, but they are hard to scale to handle high-dimensional sensory observations and complicated dependency structures. Neural-networks, on the other hand, excel at approximating complicated high-dimensional functions, but their internal representations do not easily lend themselves to a probabilistic interpretation. Despite some successes, a general unified approach is still missing for integrating the two approaches. I will describe a novel approach towards merging adaptive neural-network components into a probabilistic framework, based on three core ideas. The first is to train a set of networks to collectively perform inference, leveraging the ability of pattern-recognition methods to amortise complicated transformations. The second is to constrain the way in which the outputs of these networks are interpreted, transformed, and combined together. These constraints, together with the learning objective itself, are derived directly from probabilistic considerations encoded in a graphical model. Finally, the third core idea is that of recognition-parameterization, allowing the inference ("recognition") procedure to directly define the model itself, without requiring an explicit "generative" decoder. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Closing date: 26 March 2026 We invite applications for a postdoctoral training fellowship under the guidance of Professor Andrew Saxe. The Saxe Lab works across the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit and the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre and is focussed on understanding learning in biological and artificial systems. This role lies at the interface of deep learning theory and AI safety. You will conduct research into artificial deep networks using techniques from applied mathematics and statistical physics. A particular focus is on understanding how depth affects learned representations and network behaviour, with applications to AI safety including emergent misalignment, unlearning and the efficacy of safety fine-tuning. The project is a collaboration with the Sarao Mannelli group at Chalmers University of Technology, where additional Research Fellows will be based. Funding for collaborative visits is included. This post is funded for two years by a grant from OpenAI's Alignment Team, awarded by the UK AI Security Institute, through the Alignment Project. The appointment will be on the UCL Grade 7 salary scale £45,103 - £52,586. Grade 7 Research Fellows will also be eligible for a departmental allowance of up to £5,000 p.a. You should have a PhD in Computer Science, Physics or closely related discipline (Engineering, Theoretical Neuroscience, Mathematics) or have submitted your final thesis by the agreed start date of the position. The half-day symposium will address the question: "Is consciousness a story we tell ourselves?" by examining the relationship between consciousness, inner speech in humans and chain-of-thought reasoning in machines. I will discuss how “theta sweeps” of place and grid cell firing encode the current location (at early phases of each theta cycle) while, at later phases, sampling around the forward direction during exploration and indicating the direction to desired locations during goal-directed navigation. I will show how a relatively simple attractor model captures these results, but requires inputs signalling movement-direction and goal-direction.I will discuss why it is useful to consider the hippocampus as a generative model (in which head-direction, rather than movement-direction, is required, to translate egocentric sensory inputs to allocentric latent representations and back again) in explaining its roles in both spatial cognition and memory consolidation. “Replay sequences” are thought to support offline consolidation, and likely resemble theta sweeps more than behavioural experience. I will finish (given time) by considering how human memory consolidation can be seen as extraction of latent variables from replay via self-supervised learning, and how this perspective explains aspects of human memory such as gist-based distortions, imagination and planning. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Synchronous observation of encephalographic data permits to identify neural biomarkers. The approach targets both primary symptoms and underlying neurocognitive deficits (attention, working memory) that impede traditional therapy. The project bridges immersive technology, computational neuroscience, and clinical psychology to pioneer a newclass of digital therapeutics for trauma. This project inherently combines expertise spanning computational neuroscience, clinical psychology, and immersive technology—domains that are essential but individually insufficient to address mental disorder treatment innovation. Two partner teams bring complementary and synergistic competencies: (i) the INRIA-team Nectarine (PI: Axel Hutt) provides foundational expertise in non-invasive neuromodulation and computational neuroscience. Our lab is affiliated with the Carolina Autism & Neurodevelopment Center, the Institute for Mind & Brain, and working closely with the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging in Columbia, the center of SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Our lab explores the mechanisms of atypical brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorders) by leveraging computation modeling to bridge neural circuitry, exposure (e.g., early life adversity) and psychopathological phenotypes, and treatment outcomes. These innovative projects will leverage state-of-the-art computational models and deep learning algorithms, supported by the Brain Imaging Center (with 3T and high-field 7T MRI scanners) and the Biobehavioral Research Center. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated student to gain hands-on experience with neuroimaging (e.g., MRI) and computational modeling (e.g., deep learning models), making it ideal preparation for a future graduate or medical career. The project's core hypothesis is that a data-driven integration of iEEG recordings (ictal, pre-ictal, and interictal), neuroimaging data (MRI/DTI), and electrical stimulation sessions provides a synergistic perspective that can refine surgical planning. As the lead for data analysis and algorithm design, the successful applicant will sit at the central intersection of signal processing, machine learning, multimodal data fusion, and clinical neurology. Key Responsibilities The role emphasizes the development of robust data analysis pipelines and the identification of quantitative biomarkers rather than hands-on data collection. These features emerge from the interaction between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neuron populations within the network. Changes in sensory inputs alter this balance, leading to shifts in firing patterns and the input-output properties of individual neurons and the network. While these phenomena have been studied extensively with experiments and theory, the underlying principles for combining E and I inputs are still unclear. Here, the rules for probabilistically combining E and I inputs are derived that describe how neurons in a feedforward inhibitory circuit respond to stimuli. Theories have proposed that such representations are maintained by a class of recurrently connected networks called ring attractor networks. These networks rely on large numbers of neurons to maintain continuous and stable representations and to accurately integrate incoming signals. The head direction system of the fruit fly, however, seems to achieve these properties with a remarkably small network. These findings challenge our understanding of ring attractors and their putative implementation in neural circuits. In this talk, I will show analytically how small networks can overcome the constraints of their size to generate a ring attractor and are hence capable of stably maintaining an internal representation of a continuous, periodic variable. Further, I will show how ring attractors emerge in small threshold linear networks through the coordination of a discrete set of line attractors. More broadly, this work informs our understanding of the functional capabilities of small, discrete systems. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. In dangerous or unpredictable environments, humans must decide whether to keep collecting rewards (e.g., food) or to seek information that helps them stay safe. In this project, you will analyse how people plan under threat and how they trade off explicit reward against information-seeking for safety. We have build a scenario in which biological agents forage for food and must stay clear of threats. We have also collected data from humans performing this task in virtual reality. The goal of the project is to develop computational models based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs). These models characterize belief formation about a threat‘s distance and speed, and how these beliefs guide planning in this situation. The Computational Neuroscience lab led by Peter Dayan of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and the University of Tübingen, in collaboration with the Neurobiology of Vocal Communication Lab led by Lena Veit, invites applications for a Postdoc Research Fellow (m/f/d; E13 TVöD, 100%, 2 years). This role involves developing statistical and computational models for characterizing and understanding the structure of animal vocal communication, starting with the songs of the Bengalese Finch. This position is suited for researchers who have finished or are about to finish their PhD in a relevant discipline, such as computational neuroscience, cognitive (neuro-)science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, or psychology. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, comfortable with both analytic and critical thinking, and has a strong background in computational neuroscience, machine learning, or related fields. Relevant areas of expertise include computational modelling, signal processing, machine learning, and cognitive modeling. The applicant should have excellent programming skills, experience with advanced data analysis, and a strong publication record. The candidate should have a solid knowledge of the literature in relevant areas, and ideally have experience working in close collaboration with experimentalists. The working language is English; command of the German language is not necessary. What we offer: The position, initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension, is part of a newly established DFG research unit "Neural Basis of Vocal Communication" (FOR 5768), which investigates, through a collaborative approach across four research sites, how vocal communication is produced, coordinated, and learned across vertebrate species by mapping and comparing the underlying neural networks. Using behavioral studies, neurophysiological recordings, and computational modeling, we aim to uncover shared principles and species-specific adaptations of vocal communication. The position will be supervised by Peter Dayan and Lena Veit. We offer remuneration in accordance with TVöD (collective wage agreement for the Public Service of the German Federal States) in addition to all the customary benefits granted to employees working in Public Services. The position is based at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics along with the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neuroscience which are both in Tübingen. Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary research group studying how the primate brain controls real-time, natural behavior in dynamic environments. Different projects address how we specify and plan potential actions such as reaching under changing conditions as we move through our environment, decide between actions even during ongoing behavior, control and learn to execute movements in different behavioral contexts (e.g., body stationary vs. in motion) and integrate multisensory cues to estimate and keep track of our motion through space. Research in our group involves single- and multi-electrode neural recording experiments in non-human primates, human behavioral studies using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and galvanic vestibular stimulation, and computational modeling of the nervous system. New collaborative projects will combine use of sophisticated spatial motion systems and virtual reality environments to study naturalistic behavior in both humans and non-human primates and develop computational models of real-time action selection, planning and control. These networks rely on large numbers of neurons to maintain continuous and stable representations and to accurately integrate incoming signals. The head direction system of the fruit fly, however, seems to achieve these properties with a remarkably small network. These findings challenge our understanding of ring attractors and their putative implementation in neural circuits. In this talk, I will show analytically how small networks can overcome the constraints of their size to generate a ring attractor and are hence capable of stably maintaining an internal representation of a continuous, periodic variable. Further, I will show how ring attractors emerge in small threshold linear networks through the coordination of a discrete set of line attractors. Dear all, The Neuromodulation Institute (Paris) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position (full-time, 2-year contract with the possibility of extension) to join a human brain–computer interface project led by Philippe Domenech <http://computationalbrainteam.com/en/people> (Neuromodulation Institute, Paris) in direct collaboration with João Barbosa <http://jbarbosa.org/> (Neuromodulation Institute, Paris) and Guillaume Bellec <http://guillaume.bellec.eu/> (Technical University of Vienna). The work will be carried out in the center of Paris and the newly created Neuromodulation Institute. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. About the Project This position is part of an interdisciplinary collaboration involving computational neuroscientists, clinicians, and engineers. The goal is to establish model-driven, multi-site stimulation experiments in human patients and move towards novel therapies for psychiatric disorders through the control of human brain dynamics via closed-loop stimulation. As an initial step toward these broader goals, the postdoctoral researcher will work with electrophysiological data collected from epilepsy patients implanted with ~124 intracranial LFP electrodes, enabling simultaneous recording and multi-site stimulation. We already collected several datasets (open-loop) and up to 4 subjects are collected per month through a national network of clinicians. The work carried out by the successful applicant will sit at the intersection of machine learning, computational neuroscience and data analyses of human intracranial electrophysiology. The medium-term ambition is to expand this work to additional patient populations, including individuals with treatment-resistant major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and to incorporate recording techniques such as large-scale multi-unit activity and sub-second neuromodulation (e.g. dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline, etc) detection using ML-augmented voltammetry. Key responsibilities include developing data-driven state-space models of neural dynamics for optimal control policies for stimulation as well as inference pipelines for predicting network responses of intracranial recordings. The position emphasizes computational modeling, theory, and algorithmic development, rather than hands-on experimental data collection. Candidate Profile We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong quantitative and computational skills, and demonstrated research experience in at least one of the following areas: machine learning, simulation-based inference, reinforcement learning, generative/diffusion models and dynamical systems. Required Skills and Experience - Strong scientific programming skills in Python, in particular proficiency in PyTorch, Jax or related - Demonstrated experience in machine learning - Excellent written and spoken English. - Direct experimental experience is not required. However, the successful candidate should be enthusiastic about interacting with clinicians, neurosurgeons, and patients during experimental planning and execution. New kinds of brain maps are driving a renaissance of visual neuroscience, starting with the fruit fly Drosophila. The fly connectome yielded as a corollary the first wiring diagram for an entire visual system. Transcriptomics is identifying the ion channels and synaptic receptors in fly visual neurons. Using such detailed information, it is now possible to model the fly visual system with unprecedented realism. Our program will address the perception of motion, color, polarization, form, and objects, as well as complex visually guided behaviors such as navigation and courtship. The program promises to have historic impact by helping to refound theoretical and computational neuroscience on the bedrock of twenty-first century brain maps. Senior participants include Axel Borst (MPG), Dimitri Chklovskii (Flatiron), Damon Clark (Yale), Carina Curto (Brown), Tobi Delbruck (INI-UZH), Dezhe Jin (Penn State), and Shih-chii Liu (INI-UZH). Our lab studies the neural mechanisms of decision-making and interactive behavior using a combination of computational modeling and experimental techniques in humans and non-human primates. The successful applicant will lead innovative new experiments that examine how decisions are made during naturalistic foraging behavior. This will involve wireless multi-electrode recordings in the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia in two behavioral scenarios: 1) in a controlled virtual reality setting; and 2) during unconstrained behavior in a large enclosure equipped with cameras for automated motion capture.
