The school faculty will cover collective behaviours across a variety of species from cells, worms, drosophila, fish to non – human primates and human. A set of tutorials delving into state-of-the-art quantitative methods used to study collective behaviour will complement the lectures. At the end of the school, students will work on independent projects guided by our resident faculty and tutors. The Konstanz School of Collective Behaviour is intended for graduate students, doctoral researchers, and early postdoctoral researchers. We consider applicants with strong quantitative background including but not limited to physics, computer science, mathematics and engineering. Applicants with biological and experimental background will be considered if they demonstrate in their application extensive quantitative and mathematical background as the focus of the school is quantitative study of collective behaviours. Cosyne Workshop: 100 years of spikes – but why?

Dear participants of the Cosyne conference, we are excited to announce our workshop on March 17 in Cascais, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lord Adrian's publication of the first clear evidence of what is now known as action potential in the nervous system. While there is no doubt that they exist, their role in metabolism, representation of information and computation is still unclear. What is their unique functional role? Under what conditions is a discrete presentation of information optimal? Are spikes even advantageous for the design of artificial neural networks? Or are they rather evolutionary quick fixes? With electrophysiological and morphological data of unprecedented quality we are now in the position to newly address these decades-old questions. The lab’s research has focused on probing specific visual dimensions in the context of face, animacy, and object representations more generally. We collect and analyse human behavioural and brain imaging (fMRI and M/EEG) data. We also analyse macaque electrophysiology data obtained through collaborations and perform cross-species comparisons. We use machine learning techniques for neural data analysis and computational modelling with a special interest in biologically-inspired deep learning and AI models (NeuroAI). The computational models we work with include vision deep learning models (including topographical, recurrent, or developmentally inspired models), multimodal vision and language models, and Large Language Models. The postdoctoral researcher is welcome to work on one (or more) of the three aspects of the research programme funded by the Royal Society that aims to disentangle and model behaviourally-relevant visual and semantic dimensions (characteristics of objects: ”curved”, ”pink”, ”having eyes”, “being animate”, ”having agency”, or ones that are hard to name) of visual cognition in the human brain, while increasing the ecological validity of experiments (including mobile EEG and immersive technologies), in the light of the below three aims.
