Several subjects are available for the announced PhD thesis, depending on the background of the successful candidate. The work will include analytical investigations and numerical simulations. *Postdoctoral Fellowships inAcquisition, processing and quantitative analysis of neurobiological data* The Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (NeuroMat), hosted by the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, and funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), is offering two post-doctoral fellowships for recent PhDs with outstanding research potential. The fellowship will involve collaborations with research teams and laboratories associated with NeuroMat. The research to be developed by the post-doc fellow shall be strictly related to ongoing research lines developed by the NeuroMat team. The project may be developed at USP (São Paulo or Ribeirão Preto) or at UNICAMP (Campinas). We seek candidates capable of developing independent research in one of the research lines below: 1. Stochastic modeling of neurobiological data. 2. Acquisition, processing and quantitative analysis of electrophysiological data. 3. Development of neurostimulation protocols. Candidates to the first research line are required to have a strong background in probability theory with an emphasis on stochastic processes. Candidates to the second research line are required to have a strong background in neuroscience with previous experience in neurophysiological data acquisition, processing and analysis, and knowledge of computer programming. Candidates to the third research line are required to have a solid background in biomedical instrumentation or medical physics with previous experience in transcranial magnetic stimulation, neuronavigation and knowledge of robotics and computer programming. The initial appointment is for one year, with a possible extension to up to one year, conditional on research progress. The fellowship is competitive at an international level, and fellows benefit from extra funds for travel and research expenses plus limited support for relocation expenses. The Physiological Acoustics Lab (http://escabilab.uconn.edu) at the University of Connecticut seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position in systems and computational neuroscience. We are seeking highly motivated and creative applicants that can lead a project on perception and neural coding of speech and vocalizations in the presence of competing natural environmental noises (e.g., restaurant noise, busy street, construction noise etc.). The broad project goal is to study the neural basis for listening in noisy environments and to devise a general computational theory that accounts for perception and physiology. The project will use a variety of experimental approaches including human perception, awake animal electrophysiology, large scale neural recording, and computational modeling. UConn has a vibrant neuroscience community and there are opportunities for collaboration between departments and institutes. The primary appointment is in Biomedical Engineering, but the work will be conducted in collaboration with the Behavioral Neuroscience division in the Psychology department (Statistical Neuroscience Lab, http://stevenson.lab.uconn.edu; Sensory Perception and Neuroscience Lab, http://read.lab.uconn.edu) as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Ph.D. candidates will focus on research in neurophysiology, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), and machine learning to study clinical populations. One of the large-scale projects is based on an extensive dataset of routine clinical EEG recorded and evaluated in the process of a diagnostic workup at four local public hospitals. The data include EEG scans and corresponding EEG reports (written impressions of the visual analysis of the EEG, which was done by neurologists). One Ph.D. project will use EEG recordings to predict clinically-relevant labels. The other project will apply Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to develop models for extracting labels from EEG reports. The 7th HBP Student Conference provides an open forum for the exchange of new ideas among early career researchers working across various scientific fields relevant to the Human Brain Project (HBP), such as neuroscience, computer science, robotics, medicine, psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. Attendees will be exposed to the data-driven and multidisciplinary brain research approach of the HBP and will have the opportunity to use the EBRAINS research infrastructure. The conference will provide space for extensive scientific dialogue (both intra- and interdisciplinary) amongst peers and faculty through a variety of discussion sessions, lectures, workshops & hands-on training sessions and social events. Call for Submissions The Conference invites high-quality submissions describing innovative research in all disciplines addressed in the HBP. These contributions can emphasize theoretical or empirical works relating to a wide spectrum of fields including, but not limited to neuroscience, computer science, robotics, medicine, psychology, cognitive science and philosophy. We particularly encourage submissions with a potential to inspire collaboration in the research community by introducing new and relevant problems, concepts, and ideas, even if the work is at an early stage of development. Assistant Professor – Biostatistics Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics & Statistics The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Biostatistics with an anticipated start date of 1st January, 2023. The successful candidate will have a PhD in biostatistics/statistics or a closely related field. They will have a research program in biostatistical analysis, methodology development, and computation, with a focus on the statistical analysis of and computation with complex data from human, animal, or health/biomedical research and clinical work. They will have an outstanding record of research in the form of publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements, as appropriate for their career path and stage. A demonstrated record of or potential for attracting and sustaining peer-reviewed external funding is also required, as is a commitment to high-quality teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary and inter-Faculty team of statisticians, biologists, medical researchers and investigators studying models and clinical realities of human and animal disease. Peer-reviewed external funding is expected to be sustained throughout the appointment, and industrial partnerships are strongly encouraged where appropriate. The position includes both teaching and research responsibilities, and will include expectations to recruit and supervise graduate students. As such, the HBP is developing EBRAINS, the new European digital research infrastructure, as a lasting contribution to the global science community, an open source tool that allows scientists and technology experts to seamlessly collaborate, thereby accelerating advancements in the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine. The Helmholtz International BigBrain Analytics and Learning Laboratory (HIBALL) is an HBP Partnering Project that aims to transform the well-known BigBrain model to its next level by reinforcing utilization and co-development of the latest AI and high-performance computing (HPC) technologies for building highly detailed 3D brain models. EBRAINS is uniquely suited to provide a platform to compare anatomy, physiology and behaviour between species, due to its atlases, numerous datasets, as well as the whole brain models from different species.
