The position is aligned with the ongoing Disability Interdependence across the Lifespan using Assistive Technology (DILAT) initiative. Applicants are required to possess an earned Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline by the date of hire. Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are a group of severe rare diseases where the combined effect of seizures, most often drug resistant, and the non-seizures consequences of the disease etiology, often genetic, entail a debilitating encephalopathy with drastic effects on the neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and motor abilities of the patients. DEEs due to potassium channel mutations (K-DEEs) are emblematic of this disease presentation. Rationale. The mechanisms underlying the relationship between i) the molecular effect of a gene mutation (KCNB1/KCNT1/KCNA2) on specific voltage gated potassium channel function, and ii) the patient-specific phenotypes observed in scalp-recorded EEG signals remain elusive. Computational models inspired from neuronal physiology is now recognized as a most efficient way to bridge the gap between i) changes occurring at the level of neurons and neuronal circuits and ii) electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded in patients containing markers of the underlying pathology. Objective. The objective of the proposed research position is to design novel neuro-inspired models taking into account the molecular effect of a gene mutation on the specific voltage-gated potassium (K) channel function and the specific phenotypes observed in patients (scalp-recorded EEG signals) and in genetically-modified mice (local field potentials) in which downregulation or upregulation of K channels is induced. Methods. Detailed multicompartment models (i.e. including dendrites, soma and axon) will be developed. They will be based on Hodgkin and Huxley's (HH) formalism. They will describe both passive (membrane capacitance, axial resistivity, leakage conductance, and membrane time constant) and active (voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels) membrane properties. The channel pathogenic variants of KCNB1/KCNT1/KCNA2 mutations identified in 2 other work packages (1 & 2) will be inserted in the membrane in order to study the impact of the channel mutation on the firing rate curves of considered neuron subtypes, typically pyramidal neurons (PYR), somatostatin (SST-), parvalbumin (PV-), and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP-) positive interneurons. Optimization methods will be developed for identifying optimal parameters minimizing the distance between real and simulated electrophysiological signals (LFPs). Models will use the Hodgkin & Huxley formalism. They will be developed in Python. They will extend already-existing models at cellular level. Candidate profile. The research project is at the interface between biomathematics (neuro-inspired models) and neuroscience/neurology (epilepsy). The Post-doc/Engineer fellow (PhD level) will preferably have a strong background in computational neuroscience/systems biology or in electrical engineering with experience in bio-signal processing. The Department of Machine Learning for Clinical Neuroscience is currently recruiting PHD CANDIDATES and POSTDOCS. We develop advanced machine and deep learning models to analyze diverse clinical data, including neuroimaging, psychometric, clinical, smartphone, and omics datasets. Dear Colleagues, We are reaching out to announce a critical call for papers for the 1st Workshop on Post-Singularity Symbiosis (PSS 2025), to be held as part of the AAAI-25 Workshop Program on March 3 or 4, 2025, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. << Paper Submission Deadline - November 24, 2024 >> The rapid advancement of AI technology brings us closer to the potential emergence of superintelligence. While efforts to control and align AI are crucial, we must also confront a challenging reality. In the long term, maintaining complete control over intelligence far surpassing our own may prove difficult. PSS 2025 addresses this critical challenge by exploring strategies for human-superintelligence coexistence. We aim to unite human intellect in preparing for a future where superintelligence becomes dominant, ensuring human survival and welfare in this radically altered world. We've termed this preventive field of study "Post-Singularity Symbiosis," we believe there's an urgent need to expand this research area rapidly. The workshop focuses on three key areas: 1. Superintelligence Analysis 2. Superintelligence Guidance 3. Human Enhancement The probability of human survival in the face of potentially existential AI risks remains unknown. However, the smaller this probability, the more crucial our PSS efforts become. For example, even if the baseline chance of human survival is meager, our well-thought-out collective efforts in PSS might sometimes have the potential to improve this probability significantly. In an extreme case, raising a 1% chance to 10% would mean increasing our odds of survival tenfold. The PhD position will be part of the newly established DFG graduate school KEMAI (Knowledge Infusion and Extraction for Explainable Medical AI). Neurtex Manual Spike Sorting Contest

The Neurtex Manual Spike Sorting Contest is designed to assess how accurately spike sorting works in human intracranial microwire recordings and offers a $5000 first and other prizes. In the contest, participants are asked to perform spike sorting using any method they choose to identify spiking activity in 120 channels. These channels are a mixture of simulated and real recordings so accuracy can be judged directly for the simulated channels. PhD-Researcher and Lecturer, Neurocomputation of Language, Department of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence (1.0 fte, six years) The Neurocomputation of Language (NCL) lab from the Department of Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence (CSAI) at Tilburg University invites applications for a 6-year position. The successful applicant for this position would spend 60% of their time as a PhD student and 40% as a lecturer. The PhD project would be determined by the successful applicant and the lab director but should employ advanced statistical modeling and/or neurocomputational modeling to address one or more of the core themes of the lab: the nature and time course of language comprehension, the neural representation and computation of meaning, and the cortical organization of the language network. The educational tasks of the candidate could include leading practical sessions, grading assignments and exams, and (eventually) supervising thesis students. Requirements * Master’s degree in (computational) cognitive (neuro)science, neurobiology of language, or a related field. If you expect to obtain your degree before August 2024, you are also eligible. * Good knowledge of statistics and machine learning (practical experience with large language models is a plus). * Excellent knowledge of English and good academic writing skills. What we offer * A full-time position. * The selected candidate will receive a contract for six years. * You will receive a temporary employment contract for the duration of 12 months. A 5-year extension is offered upon a positive assessment. After one year your UFO profile will change to PhD Candidate / Lecturer. In the second year your initial education assignment is 40% and your research assignment is 60%. * A minimum gross salary of €3226- per month up to a maximum of € 4036- in the 6th year. For the duration of 12 months, you are entitled to a allowance. The amount is the difference in salary of scale 10 level 0 and scale PR level 0. * A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually). * Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary (the 30% tax regulation). Mouse cortical neurophysiology postdoc position in Jaeger lab at Emory University

AGENDA (October 5th, 2024, University of Chicago) 8:30 AM - 8:45 AM Welcome 8:45 AM - 9:15 AM Title: Human Neocortical Neurosolver: A Software Tool for Cell and Circuit Level Interpretation of MEG/EEG signals Authors: Nicholas Tolley, Stephanie Jones Affiliation: Brown University Abstract: MEG/EEG signals are correlated with nearly all healthy and pathological brain functions. However, it is still extremely difficult to infer the underlying cellular and circuit level origins. This limits the translation of MEG/EEG signals into novel principles of information processing, or into new treatment modalities for pathologies. To address this limitation, we built the Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN): an open-source software tool to help researchers and clinicians without formal computational modeling or coding experience interpret the neural origin of their human MEG/EEG data. The foundation of HNN is a biophysically-detailed neocortical model, representing a patch of neocortex receiving thalamic and corticocortical drive. The HNN model can be accessed through a user-friendly interactive graphical user interface (GUI) or through a Python scripting interface. Tutorials are provided to teach users how to begin to study the cell and circuit level origin of sensory event related potentials (ERPs) and low frequency rhythms. The package is available to install with a single command on PyPI (pip install hnn_core), is unit tested and extensively documented. HNN is additionally accessible through computing resources offered by the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG) enabling large simulation workloads. We will give an overview of the background of HNN, describe the newest features added to the software, and highlight recent research projects using HNN. 9:15 AM - 9:45 AM Title: The NEMAR Neuromagnetic Data, Tools, and Compute Resource Authors: Scott Makeig1, Kenneth Yoshimoto2, Choonhan Youn2, Dung Troung1, Subhashini Sivagnanam2, Amitava Majumdar2, Arnaud Delorme1 Affiliation: 1Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience, 2San Diego Supercomputer Center, University of California San Diego Abstract: The recent BRAIN Initiative, funded by the Obama administration, propelled the creation of archives of publicly and other funded scientific data of all types. For human functional neuroimaging, the OpenNeuro.org archive was funded to collect and publicly share data of all types. Its creator, Russ Poldrack, is an fMRI expert. For other imaging modalities, NIMH funded projects to curate data contributed to OpenNeuro. Our NEMAR.org serves that purpose for 'neuroelectromagnetic' data (EEG, MEG, iEEG). Beyond simple data curation, publication of data quality measures and data visualization, NEMAR exemplifies what I believe should become the basic unit of open science, what I call the 'integrated data, tools, and compute resource' (datcor). By teaming with the Neuroscience Gateway team, NEMAR now supports users worldwide in identifying and performing sophisticated computations on increasing amounts of publicly available data - without need for at-best balky data downloads. 9:45 AM - 10:15AM Title: DANDI: Building a collaborative ecosystem for neuroscientific data Authors: Satrajit Ghosh Affiliation: McGovern Institute, MIT Abstract: The DANDI Archive is a community-oriented platform designed to support the sharing, analysis, and re-use of neurophysiology and microscopy data, using the BRAIN Initiative supported standards for data sharing. By providing an open, FAIR-compliant (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) ecosystem, DANDI facilitates collaborative research in neuroscience. It integrates diverse data types, from electrophysiology to imaging, ensuring that researchers can contribute, discover, access, visualize, and compute on standardized datasets seamlessly. This presentation will highlight the key features of DANDI, including its data management infrastructure, open-source tools, and how it promotes transparency, reproducibility, and interdisciplinary collaboration in neuroscience research. 10:15 AM - 10:30 AM BREAK 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM Title: Enhancing Perspectives in Neuroscience Research through Diverse Institutional Partnerships. Author: Elba Serrano Affiliation: New Mexico State University Abstract: Diversity in collaboration is expected to yield more inclusive and representative research outcomes and potentially address more varied needs within a field. By pooling knowledge and resources from different disciplines, institutions, and investigators, researchers can approach problems in neuroscience from multiple angles, leading to more comprehensive and innovative solutions. The nation's 700+ federally designated minority serving institutions (MSIs) comprise about 15% of all degree-granting institutions and educate over 5 million students. System-level properties and processes are affected by interactions operating at all scales and between scales. Understanding these interconnected systems requires an interconnected and multidisciplinary research community. From AI-driven advances in protein structure and dynamics, to advanced imaging methods enabled by quantum sensing, to developing entirely new mathematical and computational frameworks to achieve insight from complex data, transformative advances in life sciences will require the synergistic work of scientists working across disciplinary boundaries. This cluster aims to create a hub of researchers using theoretical, computational, artificial intelligence, statistics, and data-science methods to advance life sciences from molecular to ecological scales. Applicants whose research synergizes with current areas of strength at Washington University will be favorably considered. Applicants whose research includes an experimental component but is primarily focused on developing theoretical, computational, and data-science methods will also be favorably considered.
