TR: M2 internship: Modeling State Transition in Sleep and Attention

Dear All, Please forward this announcement to your best and motivated master students: We are offering a Master’s internship co-supervised by Delphine Oudiette (DreamTeam, Paris Brain Institute) and Damien Depannemaecker (Institute of Systems Neuroscience, Aix-Marseille University) on the modeling of state transitions, in sleep and attention, using tools from dynamical systems theory. The project aims to develop and characterize a dynamical model of these transitions, fit it to empirical data (EEG, behavioral, and subjective measures), and perform model inversion to estimate individual parameters. The candidate should have a strong quantitative background (applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or computational neuroscience), solid programming skills (Python, Matlab, or equivalent), and an interest in modeling and data analysis. The internship, typically lasting six months, will take place in Paris and/or Marseille, depending on the candidate's choice, with opportunities for scientific dissemination of the results. Bonsai Programming workshop, Heidelberg, Oct 17th

Hello! We are happy to announce our first workshop of the new academic year! This time we will teach you how to use the *Bonsai* reactive programming language. Many experiments require us to synchronize multiple data streams— from cameras, sensors, microscopes—precisely deliver stimuli, and, quite often, do everything in a *closed-loop* setting. The fact that different devices use different software doesn’t make this task easier. One of the best—and open—solutions to these challenges is *Bonsai*, a reactive programming language that allows you to collect data from multiple systems, from calcium imaging through sound recordings to sensors, and to control output devices—such as feeders, motors, or stimulus delivery systems—to build *closed-loop* paradigms. It is easy to learn, implement, and is robust. During our workshop, we will introduce the basic logic of Bonsai; cover loading and saving data; working with a camera to track animals; and the basics of closed-loop experiments. We will also cover using Arduino alongside Bonsai to control experimental equipment and to save data from your sensors. *Requirements:* A Windows computer and a webcam. Highlight Dissecting neuronal mechanisms underlying learning and memory through cutting-edge microscopy. 3. Introduction It is widely accepted that synaptic plasticity constitutes the cellular correlate of learning. Yet, synaptic plasticity alone is insufficient to fully account for learning. Other mechanisms, such as intrinsic plasticity of membrane excitability, have been shown to be necessary for memory formation. Still, it remains unclear how intrinsic plasticity contributes to memory encoding and alters cognitive processes. In this project, we will leverage the advanced voltage imaging in larval zebrafish to investigate how intrinsic plasticity reshapes neuronal behavior. 4. Your Job In this project, you will contribute to both engineering and neurobiology. First, you will help build a light-sheet microscope optimized for voltage imaging at the single-cell and subcellular level in live larval zebrafish (1). The development of this system will be supported by Dr. Emmanuel Marquez Legorreta↗, Dr. Ernest van der Wee↗, and the Biology Image Center↗ team. Once the microscope is established, you will use it to investigate the electrophysiological properties of cerebellar Purkinje cells with advanced voltage indicators such as Voltron2. The ultimate goal is to uncover how Purkinje cells alter their dendritic signaling and spiking characteristics under different sensory or chemogenetic conditioning paradigms, and to determine how these changes may be mediated through intrinsic plasticity or brain state. LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling—from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction—and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain–machine interfaces. The program combines *morning lectures* on theory, *afternoon tutorials* using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and *evening group project work*, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: *20 years of LASCON*. Since its first edition in 2006, the school has become a recognized international initiative in computational neuroscience training, attracting students from Latin America and beyond. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). This unique opportunity allows fellows to ground their theories in rich empirical resources, potentially inspiring novel analyses, visualizations, and predictions that could subsequently be empirically tested. We seek a researcher whose work combines the following two elements. First, the research is empirical and addresses substantive questions in human cognition (e.g., perception, memory, decision making). Second, the lens of analysis is informed by computational modeling including cognitive modeling, computational neuroscience or data science. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research uses behavioral experiments and AI approaches. This can include: (1) using AI as a model of human cognition to advance cognitive theory; (2) using cognitive tools and theories to scientifically understand neural networks; and (3) empirical work on human-AI interaction. AI models can include deep neural networks of vision or language, reinforcement learning systems, or others. PhD position in computational and experimental neuroscience

The Brain Networks Research and Development Group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, lead by Professor Thomas Knösche offers a PhD position for 3 years. The project is dedicated to elucidating the role of long-range brain connectivity in human language processing and will involve EEG and MRI experiments as well as realistic modeling of biological neural networks. It is a cooperation between the TU Berlin, the TU Chemnitz, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the MPI-CBS, funded by the DFG. Candidates should hold a master (or equivalent) degree and have a background in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or similar, as well as a keen interest in neuroscience. Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. Some experience in EEG or MEG experimenting and data analysis would be beneficial, though not strictly required. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are welcome. The Institute offers a world-leading research environment with outstanding facilities and research infrastructure (five MR scanners, including a 3T Connectom and 7T Terra.X; MEG; EEG TMS). The Brain Networks group is dedicated to the development of methods to investigate, model, and understand brain networks and how they give rise to human behavior and cognition. Traditional computational models perform well in artificial tasks but struggle to generalize to real-life ecological situations. In contrast, new deep learning models excel at processing real-world information and demonstrate cognitive abilities close to those of humans. However, these models are trained on impractically large datasets and use training protocols that are not cognitively feasible, which limits their ability to explain or predict human learning and cognitive development. This project aims to develop the first cognitively feasible learning agents—AI systems that learn language and cognition within constraints that mimic human development. Leveraging a unique dataset (the 1kD corpus)— continuous daily audio-visual recordings from 18 children’s first 1,000 days of life—we will train models directly on the ecologically valid, socially embedded experiences that shape children’s growth. Unlike large-scale industrial models, which depend on vast impersonal datasets, our approach emphasizes individual-centered, real-world input that captures the long-tail variability of human development. By replicating learning trajectories across multiple households, we will establish the first mechanistic framework for how natural input shapes children’s cognition. The project represents a bold shift from analyzing existing models to building new brain-inspired learning agents, directly addressing ecological validity and laying the foundation for a new generation of cognitive science. Short Bio: Uri Hasson grew up in Jerusalem. He studied philosophy and cognitive sciences at the Hebrew University as an undergrad. He completed his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and was a postdoctoral fellow at NYU before moving to Princeton. He is currently a Professor in the Psychology Department and the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University. His research program aims to understand the neural basis of face-to-face, brain-to-brain, communication in real-world contexts, using big ECoG data and deep language models. Cross-domain saliency maps: interpretable attributions for EEG/MEG/LFP models (PyTorch & TensorFlow library)

What can you do with 1000 neurons? Task 2

Dear all, The first task (simple decision) has been solved by a number of participants. Most of the models were able to survive in the proposed environment for quite a long time, and one entry used the optimal decision strategy, with only 22 neurons (out of 1000 available). The challenge is still running with a new task (cued decision, which might be simpler) and a new agenda (you have two months). You'll find instructions at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules for the new task. Reminder: you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. The work spans multi-site morphometry, scanner harmonisation, model comparison, and external validation. PhD position on multiscale theory and simulation of human language processing

A PhD position on multiscale theory and simulation of human language processing is available in the group of Prof. Tilo Schwalger at the Technical University Berlin and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (https://page.math.tu-berlin.de/~schwalge) Germany. The position is offered in the context of the project The Role of Long-Range Brain Connectivity in Human Language Processing (ConnLingua), a collaboration between the Technical University Berlin, the Max-Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (Leipzig), the Technical University Chemnitz, and the Czech Acedemy of Science (Prague). We will use spiking neural network models for cortical microcircuits, models of white-matter connectivity as well as advanced mean-field methods and human MEG data to develop a whole-brain model that elucidates the neural mechanisms of syntactic language operations. The candidate should have a background in physics, mathematics, computer science, or computational neuroscience. Excellent analytical and programming skills as well as a keen interest in mathematical modeling are required. In addition, expertise in stochastic nonlinear dynamics is desirable. At the Bernstein center, we offer a structured program guiding doctoral researchers through the PhD work and plenty of opportunities for collaborations.
