While electrophysiological recordings in behaving animals have provided considerable information about what the firing patterns of single neurons encode in isolation, it remains largely a mystery how populations of neurons interact to perform brain functions. How do emergent collective behaviors, such as neuronal oscillations, waves, or avalanches, support function? And what is the nature of the brain’s internal state and how that affects function? With the aim of further strengthening the connection between neuroscience and statistical physics, this satellite workshop is intended to gather neuroscientists, physicists, and mathematicians who work on collective dynamics, cognition and behavior, and provide an interdisciplinary stage to discuss recent theoretical/computational and experimental advances on the role of neural ensembles for brain function. The workshop will be carefully planned to foster discussion and interaction between attendees, and to encourage the establishment of professional relationships. Dear colleagues, We are a group of researchers from the Institute of Neuroinformatics (ETH Zurich and University of Zurich) inviting you to participate in a brief anonymous survey on the current state and future directions of the Neuromorphic field. Since its origins in the late 1980s, Neuromorphic Engineering has evolved through advances in electronics, machine learning, materials science, and robotics. This raises new questions about the field’s identity and priorities. Our survey aims to capture diverse perspectives and provide a snapshot of where the field stands today and where it may be heading. Dear Colleagues, We are seeking a PostDoc with a quantitative background who has finished (or about to finish) a doctoral degree in a quantitative field preferably but not limited to physics or engineering. The candidate should show enthusiasm for analysing large scale data sets that include but not limited to: behavioural, neural and physiological data. Experience with machine learning techniques and animal tracking software programs is preferred but not required. The researcher will be based in the integrative biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, located in Konstanz, Germany. The Postdoc will be working as part of a recently funded Human Sciences Frontiers Program (HSFP) research grant ‘”Neurometabolic mechanisms underlying social foraging” in collaboration with the experimental groups of Robert Froemke (New York University) and Jee Hyun Choi (Korean Institute of Science and Technology). We will consider a novel test for candidate theories, the “participation criterion”: End-directedness of behavior entails that, in principle, it is distinguishable by measurement from one without end-directedness. But how can this criterion ever be satisfied by artificial agents? OPM-MEG FLUX toolkit 9-12 June, University of Oxford

Dear all, We are delighted to announce the first OPM-FLUX toolkit to be held 9th-12th June 2025 at St. Catherine's College at the University of Oxford. The OPM-FLUX toolkit course provides a comprehensive introduction to analysing OPM-MEG data using OPM-FLUX, an advanced analysis pipeline for human electrophysiological data. Originally designed for SQUID-based MEG, the FLUX pipeline has been adapted for OPM-MEG. While OPM-MEG offers exciting opportunities in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, analysing its data can be challenging due to technical complexities and a lack of standardised methods. To meet the increasing demand for accessible training in this area, we have developed the FLUX toolkit, built on MNE-Python, a leading MEG analysis toolbox. Participants will be taught the theoretical foundations of OPM sensors and human electrophysiology and gain practical experience with OPM FLUX. In the mornings we will have lectures on the basics data analysis as well as examples on novel cognitive neuroscience research based MEG or OPM-MEG. In the afternoon we will have hands-on data analysis workshops applying the OPM-FLUX pipeline on a data set collected from the local OPM systems. Will cover the analysis of FieldLine as well Cerca/QuSpin data. The analysis sections will include the BIDS format, preprocessing, event-related fields, spectral analysis, source modelling, and multivariate pattern analysis. We will not provide hands-on training on the actual data acquisition but we will outline the general steps required. Nencki Open Lab Bonsai Online Workshop Series

Hello! We are happy to announce a new series of online Bonsai workshops! Modern behavioral neuroscience experiments require us to synchronize multiple data streams, precisely deliver stimuli, and – quite often – do everything in a closed-loop setting. The fact that different devices use different software doesn’t make this task any easier. One of the best – and open – solutions to these challenges is *Bonsai*, a reactive programming language that allows you to collect data from multiple systems – from calcium imaging and sound recordings to sensors and control of output devices such as feeders, motors, or stimulus delivery systems. It is easy to learn, easy to implement, and robust. Prof. Angela Yu's "Computational Modeling of Intelligent Systems" Group, TU Darmstadt After 14 years as faculty at the University of California San Diego, Prof. Angela Yu joined TU Darmstadt as an Alexander von Humboldt AI Professor in 2023. Multiple PhD and postdoctoral positions are immediately available in her research group. Research Focus Prof. Yu's group investigates the intersection of natural and artificial intelligence using mathematically rigorous approaches to understand the representations and computations underlying intelligent behavior. The research particularly addresses challenges of inferential uncertainty and opportunities of volitional control. The group employs diverse methodological tools including Bayesian statistical modeling, control theory, reinforcement learning, and information theory to develop theoretical frameworks explaining key aspects of cognition: perception, attention, decision-making, learning, cognitive control, active sensing, economic behavior, and social interactions. Current Research Questions How is socio-emotional intelligence similar or different from cognitive intelligence? How can AI be taught socio-emotional intelligence? How are artificial intelligence (e.g. as demonstrated by large language models) and natural intelligence (e.g. as measured by IQ tests) similar or different in their underlying representation or computations? What roles do intrinsic motivations such as curiosity and representational efficiency play in intelligent systems? How can insights about artificial intelligence improve the understanding and augmentation of human intelligence? Are capacity limitations with respect to attention and working memory features or bugs in the brain? How can AI systems be enhanced by attention or WM? How does the brain achieve computational efficiency and efficacy with little labeled data and energetic needs? The project involves developing experiments and interpretable computational models of morally guided decision-making and conceptual combinatorial thought in humans and large language models. Applicants should have a background in computational cognitive science and ideally, AI interpretability, with strengths in research project design and leadership, collaboration and mentorship, and python skills for working with research code repositories and with large language models. ML experience not required, but familiarity with probabilistic programming and methods in neural network interpretability a plus. Because it utilizes event-based processing in which neurons spike only in response to specific stimuli, at any given time only a small fraction of neurons is active, drastically reducing energy consumption. The Humphries’ lab<https://www.humphries-lab.org> at the University of Nottingham is seeking a research assistant to join a project on the neural computations of foraging decisions, in collaboration with the groups of Matthew Apps (Birmingham) and Nathan Lepora (Bristol). Whether choosing to leave one shop for another, switching TV programs, or seeking berries to eat, humans and other animals make endless stay-or-leave decisions, but how we make them is not well understood. The goal of this project is to find out if there is a common decision algorithm for leaving across species and what that algorithm is. You will create predictions for how foragers should vary in their stay-of-leave decisions for different types of decision algorithm, and test them using data from humans and rodents tackling foraging tasks. You will have some experience in computational modelling of behaviour, such as decision-making models or reinforcement learning, and good programming skills.
