BBP - Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Neuron and Synapse Modeling A post-doctoral position in modeling of molecular synapses and neurons is available at the Blue Brain Project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland (www.epfl.ch) The Blue Brain Project, based in Geneva, Switzerland, performs large-scale simulations of the brain. The position entails development of methods and systems to perform multi-scale modeling and integrate knowledge of signaling pathways to create models of plasticity, transmission, and regulation. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in computational neuroscience or related field. Experience in modeling of molecular plasticity, biochemical signaling cascades, and reaction-diffusion modeling is desired. Strong biology and mathematical background, as well as coding competence in Python, C++, and NEURON are essential. The successful candidate will join our efforts to advance neuromorphic pattern recognition on the SpiNNaker and BrainScaleS hardware systems that are built within the Human Brain Project (HBP). Postdoctoral Research Position in Cognitive Neuroscience Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee The Sensory Neuroscience, Attention, & Perception Laboratory (SNAP Lab) of Dr. Adam Greenberg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to begin late Summer/early Fall 2017 (flexible start date). We study the neural mechanisms of attention and perception in humans using a large range of cognitive neuroscience tools including neuroimaging (fMRI, diffusion imaging), TMS, computational modeling, and neuropsychological methods. This fully funded position was created to coincide with multiple grant-funded studies of visual/auditory attention in both normal volunteers and cancer patients. Thus, a wide range of specific projects are possible along with the possibility of writing manuscripts on existing data. New project development is also strongly encouraged. Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, etc.), should be highly motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with TMS is especially desirable, as is a strong background in attention and perception. Experience with other techniques used in the lab are welcome but not required. Proficiency in programming/scripting (e.g., MATLAB, Linux shells) is necessary. Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with renewal contingent upon productivity. UW-Milwaukee is an R1 (Carnegie Classification) public, urban research university. Workshop announcement: HBP Hippocamp 2017

[Apologies for cross-posting] Dear Colleagues, I write to announce an upcoming workshop: HBP Hippocamp 2017: Collaborative and Integrative Modeling of Hippocampus to be held May 23rd -24th at the European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) in Paris, France , supported by the Human Brain Project ( [ http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ | www.humanbrainproject.eu ] ). In short, the objective of the workshop is to highlight existing modeling efforts and strategic datasets for modeling the hippocampus, and define a common integrative and collaborative modeling target including HBP and community stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to catalyze an inclusive community-driven integration and release process for open pre-competitive reference models of hippocampus which are well documented and validated (supported in part by IT infrastructure funded by HBP). Involvement from the community interested in models of hippocampus is highly encouraged. Funded PhD in Computational Neuroscience (Investigating oscillatory behaviour in Alzheimer’s disease to establish biomarkers: an EEG and computational programme of PhD study)

Please note the deadline of application is 10th of May 2017 Investigating oscillatory behaviour in Alzheimer’s disease to establish biomarkers: an EEG and computational programme of PhD study Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship within the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Business Law and Social Sciences, Birmingham City University. Applicants need to demonstrate ability and commitment, including excellent communications skills in written and spoken English. Project Synopsis: This proposed PhD work follows high profile research by the University of Birmingham team (Prof. Kim Shapiro, Prof. Howard Bowman and Mr Ali Mazaheri). The project is collaborative work between Birmingham City University (Dr Eirini Mavritsaki) and University of Birmingham (Prof. Kim Shapiro and Prof. Howard Bowman). The University of Birmingham team has access to ERP data of a semantic anomaly and word repetition task (Olichney et al, 2002). In the original analysis of the data by Olichney and colleagues, the N400 component was analysed, which is related to semantic manipulation. Olichney and colleagues found evidence of N400 abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment patients, which predicted later progression to Alzhemier’s. The University of Birmingham team have identified oscillatory changes that also predict progression to Alzheimer’s, opening up the possibility that an effective EEG-based early-stage biomarker of Alzheimer’s might be within reach. We plan to simulate this data and the changes observed in it using a computational model that is based on the sSoTS (Mavritsaki, Heinke, Humphreys and Deco, 2011) model. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPresearch) within the Department of Psychology at Birmingham City University. Project Synopsis: There are many limitations on the behaviour of complex neural systems, but one primary constraint is to filter incoming input in order that actions can be programmed to behaviourally relevant stimuli. A major challenge for current-day researchers is to understand how (and why) these limitations arise, especially in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) where the attentional system is dysfunctional. The main aim of this project is to identify and understand the differences in visual attention between children diagnosed with ADHD and typically functioning children. In addition, to investigate the role of diet in ADHD. This Ph.D. thesis aims to do this by using a novel interdisciplinary approach, behavioural and computational modelling study. The student can choose to work in both or just one approach (either computational or behavioural work). We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organization for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? How can we characterise and map individual language skills in relation to the population distribution? BQ5: How are other cognitive systems shaped by the presence of a language system in humans? Successful candidates will be appointed at one of the consortium’s home institutions, depending on the position applied for. All successful candidates will become members of our Big Question teams. Postdoctoral position in visuomotor control of catching and throwing – Rome, Italy ** A postdoctoral position is available in the group led by Prof. Andrea d’Avella (a.davella(a)hsantalucia.it) in the Laboratory of Neuromotor Physiology directed by Prof. Francesco Lacquaniti, at the Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome, Italy. The researcher will be involved in ongoing studies performed under the interdisciplinary project CogIMon, funded by the H2020 program of the European Union. The project CogIMon aims at a step change in human-robot interaction, and comprises leading robotics, computational neuroscience, and human motor control European research groups. Research will be focused on investigating strategies for prediction, coordination, and control during interactive human-human and human-robot catching and throwing. Experiments are conducted with real balls in a large motion capture setup and with virtual balls in an immersive multisensory virtual environment where ball impact is rendered with a haptic device, and human and robotic agents are simulated. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, a real interest in human sensorimotor control, and strong quantitative and programming skills. Experience with collection and analysis of experimental data, psychophysics in virtual environments, computer graphics and avatar animation are valuable assets. The **First International Workshop on Grounding Language Understanding (GLU 2017)** will be held at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, on August 25, 2017. http://www.speech.kth.se/glu2017/ The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different disciplines (linguistics, language, robotics, systems neuroscience, cognitive science, signal processing, etc.) working with modeling different aspects of grounding language acquisition and understanding. Although speech and language technology have reached a level of maturity, machines still fall short of human performance, especially when considering flexibility and robustness. It is therefore desirable to extend the machine learning approach which has been applied to speech and language technology, and emulate more closely the way humans and living systems acquire language. Combining concepts from biology, physics, electrical engineering and computer science, the research will focus on new methods for the development of hybrid systems, coupling living neurons and neuromorphic systems. In close cooperation with researchers from the different domains you will assist in establishing a new collaborative research group targeting hybrid neuromorphic systems. Tasks include the analysis of new methods for electrode/neuron interfacing, evaluation of the energy efficiency of living cells, and the realization of small neural networks based on memristors. Postdoctoral positions in theoretical neuroscience

Postdoctoral positions in theoretical neuroscience The Doiron group at the University of Pittsburgh is currently seeking up to two postdoctoral fellows to work on cutting edge problems in theoretical neuroscience. Research topics include: 1) The genesis and consequences of neuronal variability in cortical networks 2) Biologically realistic modeling of assembly formation in cortical circuits 3) Information transfer in the primary visual system 4) How learning and memory impact population codes All projects will involve heavy collaboration with several prominent experimental groups (primate and rodent) both in Pittsburgh as well as abroad. The positions are 3-year terms (contingent upon satisfactory progress) with competitive salary and benefits packages offered by the University of Pittsburgh. Postdoctoral position on modelling and neural analysis of flexible perceptual decision-making at IDIBAPS / UPF (Barcelona)

A postdoctoral research position in computational neuroscience is available to work with Jaime de la Rocha at IDIBAPS (Barcelona) and Alexandre Hyafil at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). The postdoctoral fellow will be a vital member of the interdisciplinary research team led by Jaime de la Rocha that studies perception and cognition using combined theoretical and experimental approaches. More specifically, the fellow's work will be part of an ERC-funded project aiming to unravel the behavioural principles and the neural mechanisms underlying how recent experience shapes perception and guides decisions. The fellow will (1) characterize the behavioural influence of recent history onto perceptual choices in rats and humans performing acoustic discrimination tasks, (2) analyze population recordings from cortical neurons obtained from rats to uncover the traces of recent history decision biases and (3) build dynamical models of behaviour based on the population recordings using a variety of machine learning tools. Behavioural and neural data is currently being acquired by other researchers in the lab. The work will be co-supervised between Jaime de la Rocha, head of the Cortical Circuit Dynamics Group (http://neuro.fcrb.es/delaRochaLab/) and Alexandre Hyafil who is establishing his new laboratory in the nearby UPF, and has in the last years develop a set analysis techniques fitted for our data. Both groups are part of the vibrant computational neuroscience community of Barcelona, which promotes the interaction among groups by organizing multiple internal activities. Applicants should have a strong background in computational neuroscience or applied mathematics and have a keen interest in interdisciplinary approaches that integrate modeling and experimental research. Programming proficiency (Matlab and/or Python) is required. Experience in machine learning methods, advanced statistics as well as nonlinear dynamical systems will be valued. Ability to collaborate in a pluridisciplinary team is essential. Initial appointment for this position is for two years.
