Three Positions in the Dutch Research Consortium 'Language in Interaction' (1.0 FTE) Dutch Research Consortium 'Language in Interaction' Vacancy number: 30.06.19 Application deadline: 28 May 2019 [Logo NWO] [Logo Language in Interaction] Responsibilities We are looking for highly motivated candidates to enrich a unique consortium of researchers that aims to cross the boundaries of various disciplines to unravel the neurocognitive mechanisms of language and its interaction with other cognitive systems. This specific project aims to advance our understanding of the mechanisms of fast, flexible linguistic inference by leveraging recent major advances in our understanding of the representations and computations necessary for sequential model-based action planning. Currently, our consortium advertises 2 Postdoc positions and 1 PhD position. These positions provide the opportunity for conducting world-class research as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Work environment The Netherlands has an outstanding track record in the language sciences. The Language in Interaction research consortium, sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organisation for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? How can we characterise and map individual language skills in relation to the population distribution? BQ5: Inference for language and action planning: Common computations? Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB!), September 4-10, 2019 [Second announcement]

The new Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group project aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. Proficiency in either Python or Matlab is also required. We will seek a nice blend of experimentalists (cognitive psychology / neuroscience) and theoreticians (with or without experience in cognitive modeling).Female scientists and scientists from underrepresented countries are especially encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience and artificial intelligence

Applications are invited for post-doctoral research position in the laboratory of Dr. Maxim Bazhenov at the University of California, San Diego to study memory and learning and to develop neuroscience inspired algorithms capable of continual learning, generalization of knowledge and adaptation to the novel situations and contexts.This project involves close collaboration with the experimental laboratory of Dr. Bruce McNaughton. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance the knowledge of how human and animal brains learn from experience and apply these principles to the artificial systems to enable continuous learning without catastrophic forgetting. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of researchers to design anatomically realistic neuronal network models of dynamic interactions between the hippocampus and neocortex during learning and memory consolidation in sleep and awake based on experimental data. An ideal candidate should have experience in computational/theoretical neuroscience and a basic knowledge of machine learning. ML staff scientist position at NIMH/NIH

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Section on Neurobiology of Fear & Anxiety. This section examines neural systems models of emotion/cognition interactions. This is done in two ways: one that focuses on anxiety in health and disease, and the other that uses a developmental perspective using large datasets. Four types of data are exploited, clinical/behavioral assessment, psychophysiology, fMRI (particularly 7T high-resolution scanner) and MEG. The candidate must have a doctoral degree (PhD) in computational neuroscience, or computer science/engineering and at least 5 years of experience post Ph.D. analyzing large datasets, modeling complex neural systems, using advanced machine learning algorithms. Experience with technical computing in MATLAB, R, C++ and a strong mathematical skill set is required. Knowledge of multi threaded and paralell computing environments is desirable. An interest in neuroscience or prior experience in neuroscience related fields is a plus. The staff scientist is expected to be a key member of the Section on Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety, contributing to analytical methodology, design of new projects. Fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship in Mark Humphries' lab (Nottingham)

A fully funded PhD position is available with Prof. Mark Humphries at the University of Nottingham (UK), on a project entitled "Mapping the wires using neural activity". The studentship is for 3 years, and is open to UK/EU citizens. The wiring between neurons, the connectome, defines their activity. So in order to understand the activity of neurons we record from, we want to know the wiring between them. But current technology does not allow the simultaneous recording and tracing of the connections between neurons. To solve this problem, this project will develop computational techniques to accurately infer wiring between neurons from the next generation of imaging techniques that directly record neuron voltages. The project will combine development of algorithms, simulations of neural circuits as test-beds, and analysis of real imaging data from neural populations. Data Scientist Position at Boston University

The Lab of Jerry Chen at Boston University is hiring a Data Scientist to be involved in several multi-year BRAIN Initiative related NIH and NSF funded projects. These projects focus on understanding cortical computation during behavior by combining large-scale population recordings, anatomical reconstructions, and transcriptional profiling as well as developing tools for large-scale and high-speed imaging of neuronal populations. This person will be involved in help to analyze experimental data, developing software tools to aid in the data analysis, and helping with data infrastructure and management. Specific Projects include: 1. Analysis of dense electron microscope reconstructions of neuronal connectivity (ie. Connectomics) 2. Establishing pipeline for image analysis for in situ sequencing of gene expression 3. Establishing pipeline for automated behavioral training and analysis. 4. This person will be jointly involved and mentored by personnel from the Hariri Institute's Software & Application Innovation Lab (SAIL), a center with expertise in cutting-edge computational and data-driven research with tangible and direct impacts on academic research, public service, and industry partners in healthcare, finance, and technology. Qualifications: BA/BS degree (MA or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Neuroscience or related technical field. One to three years of academic or professional experience. Postdoc opportunity in computational/human vision at the University of Toronto

University of Toronto, Bernhardt-Walther Lab and Semantic Technology Lab A Post-doctoral position in computational modeling of vision and knowledge acquisition is available with Dirk Bernhardt-Walther (Psychology) and Michael Grüninger (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) at the University of Toronto. We seek a colleague who shares our interest in explaining how structured knowledge about the world arises through visual perception. The project combines formal logic in ontologies with perceptual grouping of visual elements in complex, real-world scenes. Optionally, the project may involve measuring brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The ideal candidate has a strong computational and mathematical background, experience with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques and/or a strong background in computational neuroscience. The ability to communicate with a diverse team of researchers from engineering and psychology is an essential prerequisite. Current state-of-the-art computational models of visual processing are trained to extract visual features of increasing complexity in a hierarchy of layers, choosing a label from a pretrained set of categories at the apex of the hierarchy. Such systems lack an important aspect of the human visual system – a notion of meaning of visual content. The project aims to develop a new model of visual perception, which integrates the generation of networks of meaning into all levels of the visual processing hierarchy, thus allowing structured visual knowledge to arise naturally from visual perception. Specifically, this will involve the generation of a large database of images of real-world scenes with detailed ontological annotations, development of data structures and algorithms for extracting such ontological structures automatically from images, and testing the viability of our new meaning-based model of vision for explaining aspects of human vision. The University of Toronto, typically ranked as one of the world’s top 20 research universities, is located in downtown Toronto. The city is one of the most livable and cosmopolitan cities in the world, and has a vibrant academic and information technology community. This full-time position includes benefits and is fully funded for two years, with an initial appointment of one year. Neural Modeling Postdoc Position At Emory University, Atlanta

A postdoctoral position is available for working in an NIH BRAIN initiative funded project on the role of the basal ganglia in motor decision making in behaving mice. The project aims to elucidate how subcortical structures feed back onto and influence cortical processing. The open position with a start date of Sept. 1, 2019 will involve biophysically detailed modeling of basal ganglia – thalamo-cortical interactions in the Jaeger lab at Emory University in Atlanta https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/jaegerlab/. Two Funded Postdoctoral Positions in Parkinson’s Disease Research and Intervention

*Two Postdoctoral Fellows in Computational modeling and Precision Medicine applied to Parkinson’s Disease* We are looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral fellows, for joining the Neuroinformatics for Personalized Medicine lab (NeuroPM) at the Montreal Neurological Institute (McGill University, Montreal, Canada). The postdoctoral fellows will be under the supervision of Professor Yasser Iturria-Medina, and will be expected to collaborate with associated groups (e.g. Integrative Neuroscience Centre, Madrid, Spain). The projects, for 1.5 years and potentially extendable for another year, includes the analysis of multiple imaging modalities and therapeutic interventions in Parkinson’s disease, as well as the application of state-of-the-art brain computational models. The NeuroPM lab (http://www.neuropm-lab.com/) is affiliated with the Healthy brain for Healthy Lives (HBHL) initiative ( https://www.mcgill.ca/hbhl/) the Ludmer Center (http://ludmercentre.ca/) and the McConnell Brain Imaging Center (https://www.mcgill.ca/bic/) involving computationally intensive and interdisciplinary research on the brain. A revised electromagnetic theory of the brain

Dear Colleagues, A common dogma of neuroscience is that all electrical events occurring in the brain are well described by an electrostatic theory. However, adopting a geometric attitude it becomes immediately clear that the propagation of an action potential induced a non-conservative electric field within nearby spines, and thus an electromagnetic description of the function of a brain is unavoidable. I would like to present to you with a revised and simplified version of the theory I advanced last year, entitled "Dynamic Aspects of Finite Architectures". This year the school will primarily focus on the neural basis and computational principles underlying sensory- motor tasks, in which the agent chooses from a small number of actions based on sensory and operant cues. *The forthcoming NeuroBridges 2019* will be a ten-day summer school. Students will attend lectures delivered by a group of leading neuroscientists, experimentalists as well as theoreticians, which will address the fundamental questions in the field of decision making.
