Invitation for papers submission to In Silico Pharmacology

On behalf of the In Silico Pharmacology (Springer) editorial board, we would like to invite papers at the interface between computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, machine learning and neuropharmacology. In Silico Pharmacology provides a forum for peer-reviewed research articles at the cross-roads of computation, neuroscience, pharmacology and toxicology. It is anticipated that all computational and experimental approaches are represented within In Silico Pharmacology. The journal primarily publishes interdisciplinary papers that address computational approaches in multi-scale analysis of bioactive substances from the cellular up to behavioral level as well as drug-design. The journal especially encourages deterministic and stochastic modeling of biological (e.g., biochemical, biophysical and immunological) processes leading to therapeutic advancements, as well as mathematical methods characterizing the pharmacology of substances within the living organism. Papers investigating substance- or material-induced morphological and genetic alterations are also welcome. PhD Position in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh

Applications are invited for a fully-funded 3 year PhD studentship in Computational Neuroscience with Dr. Angus Chadwick at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, an undergraduate or masters degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related subject, and be interested in applying their analytical skills to tackle problems in neuroscience. Highly motivated students with other backgrounds may also apply. Research in our group focuses on the neural circuit computations underlying perceptual and cognitive function, with a focus on vision and spatial navigation. We use a combination of approaches, including 1) analysis and simulation of biological neural networks, 2) development of novel data analytic methods for large-scale neural recordings, and 3) normative models of neural circuit function informed by machine learning and artificial intelligence. Typical techniques used include dynamical systems theory, statistical physics, signal processing and machine learning. We collaborate closely with experimental neuroscience laboratories both in Edinburgh and further afield. A number of projects are available, and there is flexibility to develop a project to suit the interests and skills of the candidate. Edinburgh is a vibrant and international city with a large student population, and has been voted as “best place to live in Britain”. The School of Informatics hosts an internationally-leading research environment in Computational Neuroscience, Machine Learning and Robotics, with close links to the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences and the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. Release of CARLsim5 - Latest version of our GPU-accelerated Spiking Neural Network Simulator

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the release of CARLsim5. CARLsim is an efficient, easy-to-use, GPU-accelerated library for simulating large-scale spiking neural network (SNN) models with a high degree of biological detail. CARLsim allows execution of networks of Izhikevich spiking neurons with realistic synaptic dynamics on both generic x86 CPUs and standard off-the-shelf GPUs. The simulator provides an intuitive programming interface in C/C++, which allows for details and parameters to be specified at the synapse, neuron, and network level. The new release has a python frontend that is compatible with PyNN. IMRF2020 postponed to June 07-10 2021 in Ulm, Germany

Dear participants of the IMRF, Although, the COVID-19 situation is getting better in some places around the world, it is still getting worse in a lot of other places, and travelling to and from Germany is still far away from normal. Additionally, distancing restrictions apply and will likely apply for quite some more time (maybe until a vaccination has been found), which would not allow us to host as many people as anticipated at the venue we reserved in October 2020. As many other conferences, we also considered moving to an online format for the IMRF meeting (https://cops.ifp.uni-ulm.de/imrf2020/ <https://cops.ifp.uni-ulm.de/imrf2020/>). However, we feel the community would not benefit as much as having a meeting in person. Therefore, we decided to postpone the IMRF meeting once again (and hopefully for the last time) to June 07-10, 2021. Abstract submission and registration will stay open. All abstracts already submitted will further be considered. However, as there may be new data or insights gathered even during the COVID-19 pandemic, you can of course log on and adapt your abstracts until the new deadline for abstract submission. Same applies for the symposia already accepted. However, as the symposia have already gone through a review process, we would check these changes again and in case of substantial revisions we would probably re-review them again. *** HIRING: machine learning research scientist The Machine Learning Team at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, MD, has an open position for a machine learning research scientist. The NIMH is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders and neuroscience, and part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). *** About the NIMH Machine Learning Team Our mission is to help NIMH scientists use machine learning methods to address a diverse set of research problems in clinical and cognitive psychology and neuroscience. These range from identifying biomarkers for aiding diagnoses to creating and testing models of mental processes in healthy subjects. We work with many different data types, including very large brain imaging datasets from various imaging modalities, behavioral data, and picture and text corpora. We have excellent computational resources, both of our own (tens of GPUs for deep learning) and shared within the NIH (a cluster with hundreds of thousands of CPUs, and hundreds of GPUs). As a machine learning research group, we develop new methods and publish in the main machine learning conferences (e.g. NeurIPS and ICLR), as well as in psychology and neuroscience journals. Many of our problems require devising research approaches that combine imaging and non-imaging data, and leveraging structured knowledge resources (databases, scientific literature, etc) to generate explanations and hypotheses. Additionally, candidates should be capable of visualizing and communicating findings to a broad scientific audience, as well as explaining the details of relevant methods to researchers in a variety of domains. Desirable experience that is not required, but will be considered very favorably: - neuroimaging data processing and analysis (any MRI modality, as well as MEG and EEG) - other types of neural data (e.g. neural recording, calcium imaging) - modelling of human and animal learning and decision-making - Bayesian statistical modelling Finally, you should have demonstrable experience coding in languages currently used in data-intensive, scientific computing, such as Python, MATLAB or R. Two Research (PhD) Positions in Machine Learning Theory and Applications - Oldenburg University, Germany

The Machine Learning Lab at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, is seeking to fill two positions for doctoral researchers Our Machine Learning Lab conducts mathematically grounded research on novel approaches in Machine Learning with a focus on probabilistic generative approaches including deep generative models. Examples are deep variational autoencoders, deep mixture models, and Bayesian networks. Our research projects are conducted in collaboration with leading international labs, and we publish in leading international journals and present on leading conferences. Our interests are in understanding methods and in developing novel approaches to solve difficult problems in Machine Learning. We are interested in problems with strong data corruptions, strong noise and in problems with few data or few labels. Furthermore, we are in general interested in the development of novel approaches that significantly improve learning efficiency (with applications to Big Data). At the same time, we model neural information processing using Machine Learning models in order to understand the nature of biological intelligence. The two positions will both allow for basic research, and they will both allow for applications to data for tasks such as data enhancement (denoising, inpainting, deblurring), unsupervised and semi-supervised learning, super-resolution, outlier detection etc. Part of one position has a focus on addressing such tasks for medical data. Ideal candidates have a strong background in a theoretical subject and/or a high interest in further advancing Machine Learning methods such as variational optimization. Example degrees that qualify for the positions are degrees in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, in the Data Sciences or degrees of related disciplines. Strong programming skills are a big plus. Early concepts about episodic memory were based on the storage model, according to which experiential content is preserved in memory and later retrieved. However, overwhelming empirical evidence suggests that the content of episodic memory is – at least to a certain degree – constructed in the act of remembering. Even though very few contemporary researchers would oppose this view of episodic memory as a generative process, it has not become the standard paradigm of empirical memory research. This is particularly true for studies of the neural correlates of episodic memory. Further hindering progress are large conceptual differences regarding episodic memory across different fields, such as neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology. This interdisciplinary workshop therefore aims to bring together researchers from all relevant fields to advance the state of the art in the research on generative episodic memory. FOR 2812 “Constructing scenarios of the past: A new framework in episodic memory” consists of 9 researchers. Seven from the Ruhr University Bochum and two from the University of Münster. PhD Position at the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab, IDIBAPS, Barcelona

We are offering a PhD position in the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab (IDIBAPS, Barcelona) to participate, under the supervision of Jaime de la Rocha, in the ERA-NET project titled A neurocomputational biomarker assay for schizophrenia based on E/I-balance. The project aims to perform perceptual discrimination experiments in mice lacking the GluN1 subunit of NMDA receptors in PV cells, a known murine model for schizophrenia (SCZ). High-throughput behavioral experiments will be combined with neural population recordings and optogenetic manipulations to elucidate the relation between NMDA hypofunction, altered E/I balance in cortical circuits and perceptual discrimination deficits. The candidate will be part of the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab in IDIBAPS (Barcelona) an interdisciplinary group led by Albert Compte and Jaime de la Rocha, which integrates students from different backgrounds and combines human and animal experiments with computational modeling to address questions related with perceptual decision making, learning and working memory (see braincircuitsbehavior.org<http://braincircuitsbehavior.org/>). IDIBAPS is a well-recognized biomedical research institute in Spain, located in the heart of Barcelona (www.clinicbarcelona.org/en/idibaps<http://www.clinicbarcelona.org/en/idibaps>). Postdoc position in computational neuroscience at University of Pittsburgh

The Huang group at the University of Pittsburgh has a postdoc position available immediately for computational modeling to understand how recurrent connections with synaptic plasticity shape the time scales in the auditory cortex. This position is part of a collaboration with Prof. Tobias Teichert and Prof. Dean Salisbury from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. This project aims to use a combination of modeling, electrophysiology and EEG recordings to investigate the circuit mechanisms underlying auditory refractoriness, as well as auditory dysfunction in Schizophrenia. In general, our group is interested in how different task and stimulus contexts change neuronal responses and the implications on neural coding. Other ongoing projects in the group include circuit models of interneuron subtypes and attentional modulation on information flow. The position is funded for two years, with an initial one-year appointment, and it can be possibly extended to three years. The project is funded by a Brain Initiative grant. Two PhD positions in computational neuroscience at the University of Amsterdam

Dear all, We have two PhD positions in computational neuroscience available at the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Both positions are funded by the Human Brain Project (HBP-SGA3) and will be co-supervised by Cyriel Pennartz, head of the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group, and Jorge Mejias, Principal Investigator of Computational Neuroscience. Position #1: The main objective of this PhD project is to develop a large, biologically plausible model of a cortical architecture that is trained for predictive object and scene representations and performs cognitive operations on these representations, such as scene segmentation, object categorization and object constancy in the face of variable sensory input. The candidate will closely collaborate with other computational neuroscientists, experimental neuroscientists, theoreticians and machine learning experts across different research teams in Europe. For this position, we are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in computational neuroscience or closely related field with a strong background in modeling neural networks or, alternatively, a MSc in machine learning/AI or biomedical, electronic or automation engineering, computer science, physics or a closely related field with a clear background or affinity for brain-inspired modeling. Strong programming skills in Python and experience in machine learning and (deep) neural network modeling is desirable. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. Position #2: The main objective of this PhD project is to develop a biologically realistic computational model of multi-area cortical circuits involved in multisensory perception, categorization and sensory prediction. We will build a model constrained by state-of-the-art neuroanatomical data, which will include biologically relevant information such as cortical laminar structure, multiple cell types, and biologically realistic learning rules for synaptic plasticity. The model will be able categorize stimuli in simple multisensory tasks and will provide computational predictions on neural activity which we will compare to experimental data from collaborators. The candidate will also closely collaborate with other computational neuroscientists, experimental neuroscientists, theoreticians and machine learning experts across different research teams in Europe. For this position, we are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in computational neuroscience or closely related field (with a focus on modeling biological neural systems) or, alternatively, an MSc in physics, mathematics or a closely related field and a clear background or affinity for brain modeling. Strong mathematical skills including calculus, linear algebra, dynamical systems and complex systems, as well as strong computational skills (Python, NEST) are desirable. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. For both positions, we offer a full-time appointment for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive performance evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,395 in the first year to €3,061 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scale for PhD candidates. Additional benefits include a holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus (8% and 8.3% of the gross annual salary, respectively) and generous vacation, pension and social security conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. Virtual Telluride Neuromorphic Engineering Workshop (July 27-31 2020)

We are happy to announce a Virtual Telluride Neuromorphic Cognition Engineering Workshop 2020 (https://tellurideneuromorphic.org/) this year in replacement of our usual Workshop in Telluride. The workshop will take place from July 27 to July 31 (8am to 10am PDT, or 17:00 to 19:00 CET). The format will be a week of lectures and tutorials on current topics in neuromorphic engineering (two hours per day) followed by four hands-on, collaborative challenges which will be carried out in the month of August. The results of the challenges will be presented on September 10 and 11. PhD Position on the Brain, Language and Multilingualism

With the launch of a new ‘NCCR Evolving Language’ (http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/nfs/Faktenblatt_NCCR_evolvinglang…) which involves nearly 40 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, we seek to fill a PhD position for a four-year project, starting in September or October 2020. Our goal is to make progress in understanding language giftedness from cognitive, psychological and neural perspectives. To this end, we plan to carry out a set of studies involving acquisition of both behavioral measures of cognitive and language-related abilities (e.g. auditory/perceptual abilities, phonemic perception and production, inductive learning, working memory etc) and of brain imaging measures (fMRI and sMRI). The project will be supervised by Narly Golestani (University of Geneva) and Raphael Berthele (University of Fribourg), and will be done in collaboration with a postdoctoral fellow. Data will be collected with Francophone (mono- and multilingual) subjects. Applicants should hold have a background in cognitive neuroscience or psychology, with solid experience in brain functional neuroimaging (ideally fMRI), behavioral testing and strong statistics skills. Command of the French and English languages is essential. Given hiring restrictions due to Covid19, priority will be given to European applicants, at least for now. The NCCR places great emphasis on gender diversity and we particularly encourage women to apply. Dear All, I have a PhD position to offer in my lab: "Researchers at the subinstitute Cognitive Neuroscience (INM-3) investigate the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive (dys-) function in healthy subjects and patients suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders. Functional imaging (PET, MRI) and electrophysiological methods (EEG, TMS, tDCS) are combined with computational approaches.
