What can you do with 1000 neurons?

Dear all, There exists a lot of computational models of decision making that can give account on this or that experimental data. The question is whether we can adapt these models to solve an actual decision task? You'll find at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules of a simple decision making challenge. Roughly, you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. CNS*2025 Tutorial "Building Intuitive and Efficient Biophysical Models with Jaxley and DendroTweaks - Schedule

Dear friends and colleagues, We are pleased to announce that this Saturday, July 5, in Florence, Italy, we will be hosting a full-day tutorial at CNS*2025 on "Building Intuitive and Efficient Biophysical Models with Jaxley and DendroTweaks". This tutorial will introduce two new software tools, Jaxley and DendroTweaks, which provide complementary approaches for developing detailed biophysical models. The tutorial will feature interactive, hands-on sessions using Jupyter notebooks, where participants will learn how to: - Build neuronal models with realistic dendritic morphology and ion channels - Understand the role of each model parameter through interactive visualizations - Refine data and standardize models - Speed up simulations using a GPU-based simulator - Optimize model parameters automatically using gradient-based approaches - Train networks of biologically realistic neurons to solve complex tasks, bridging the gap between neuroscience and AI This tutorial is open to researchers and students of all levels interested in computational neuroscience. While electrophysiological recordings in behaving animals have provided considerable information about what the firing patterns of single neurons encode in isolation, it remains largely a mystery how populations of neurons interact to perform brain functions. How do emergent collective behaviors, such as neuronal oscillations, waves, or avalanches, support function? And what is the nature of the brain’s internal state and how that affects function? With the aim of further strengthening the connection between neuroscience and statistical physics, this satellite workshop is intended to gather neuroscientists, physicists, and mathematicians who work on collective dynamics, cognition and behavior, and provide an interdisciplinary stage to discuss recent theoretical/computational and experimental advances on the role of neural ensembles for brain function. Two Postdoctoral Research Positions at Ghent University

The Learning and Cognitive Control Laboratory at Ghent University (Belgium) is recruiting two highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to apply a control-theoretic approach to investigate the neurocognitive mechanisms of cognitive effort ( https://doi.org/10.1037/rev0000467 ). Position 1: The successful candidate will apply linear control theory to investigate the energy demands of existing artificial neural network models of working memory, task switching, and brain computer interface tasks. A Ph.D. and background in computational modeling, engineering or a related discipline is required; expertise with linear control theory and dynamical systems theory are preferred but not necessary. Position 2: The successful candidate will train recurrent neural networks to learn the generative structure of existing behavioral, EEG and MEG data sets (dynamical system reconstruction), and apply linear control theory to investigate the energy demands of the resulting network architectures. A Ph.D. and background in computational modeling, engineering or a related discipline is required; expertise with linear control theory and dynamical systems theory are preferred but not necessary. The modern advances in neuroscience and AI have generated growing interests in NeuroAI, as witnessed by the feedback from the recent NIH BRAIN NeuroAI workshop (Nov. 12-13, 2024). [Announcement] New Calcium Imaging Analysis Framework: OptiNiSt

Fortunately, these developments have coincided with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), which holds the potential to transform how we analyze and utilize scientific information. While there is significant potential here, we are just starting to figure out how to apply modern AI models to interpret and process scientific data, and significant challenges remain. The trend of applying AI to better understand the brain concurs with another reviving trend: applying knowledge from neuroscience to developing new AI. Indeed, despite the tremendous progress, the existing generation of AI shows significant limitations, including a lack of continual learning, poor generalization, dependence on enormous amounts of data for training, bias, and safety problems. These are features where the biological brain excels, highlighting the strong need to learn once more from neuroscience how to develop the next generation of AI. The proposed workshop will combine these two complementary trends, bringing experts from the field together to discuss how AI can facilitate new scientific discoveries and how knowledge of the brain can help improve AI. NEURON and NetPyNE tutorial at CNS*2025, July 5, 2025

Dear colleagues, This July 5th, there will be a “Building mechanistic multiscale models with NEURON and NetPyNE” tutorial at CNS*2025, all day in room 6. To attend, please be sure you have registered for the tutorials at the conference: https://www.cnsorg.org/cns-2025-registration This tutorial will introduce multiscale modeling using NEURON 9.0 and NetPyNE. The tutorial will combine background, examples and hands on exercises covering the implementation of models at four key scales: * single neuron electrophysiology (e.g. action potential propagation), * intracellular dynamics (e.g. calcium buffering, protein interactions), * neurons in extracellular space (e.g. spreading depression), and * networks of neurons. For single cell simulations, we will utilize NEURON through Python, simulating point cells and incorporating realistic morphology information from NeuroMorpho.Org. For network simulations, we will use NetPyNE, a high-level interface to NEURON supporting both programmatic and GUI specification that facilitates the development, parallel simulation, and analysis of biophysically detailed neuronal circuits. We conclude with an example that links intracellular molecular dynamics with network spiking activity and local field potentials. The NetPyNE tutorial will be carried out online using the Open Source Brain web platform (http://v2.opensourcebrain.org) and will include an introduction to NeuroML, a standardized computational neuroscience language to describe detailed models of neurons and neural networks. The tutorial highlights recent substantial developments and new features in both NEURON and NetPyNE. Basic familiarity (e.g. loops, functions, variables, if) with Python is recommended. No advanced programming experience or prior knowledge of NEURON or NetPyNE is required. CNS*2025 Workshop "Enabling synaptic plasticity, structural plasticity, and multi-scale modeling with morphologically detailed neurons using Arbor"

Dear Colleagues, * * we are pleased to announce the workshop "*Enabling synaptic plasticity, structural plasticity, and multi-scale modeling with morphologically detailed neurons using Arbor*", which will take place at *CNS*2025* on *Wednesday, 9 July*, in Florence, Italy. Current computational neuroscience studies are often limited to a single scale or simulator, with many still relying on standalone simulation code due to computational power and technology constraints. Simulations incorporating biophysical properties and neural morphology typically focus on single neurons or small networks, while large-scale neural network simulations often resort to point neurons as a compromise to incorporate plasticity and cell diversity. Whole-brain simulations, on the other hand, frequently sacrifice details at the individual neuron and network composition levels. This workshop introduces recent advances leveraging the next-generation simulator Arbor (https://arbor-sim.org/) designed to overcome these challenges. Arbor enables seamless conversion from the widely used NEURON simulator, facilitates the study of functional and structural plasticity in large neural networks with detailed morphology, and supports multi-scale modeling through co-simulation, integrating microscopic and macroscopic levels of simulation. Arbor is a library optimized for efficient, scalable neural simulations by utilizing both GPU and CPU resources. It supports the simulation of both individual neurons and large-scale networks while maintaining detailed biophysical properties and morphological complexity. The workshop will feature presentations covering three key aspects: * *Effortless transition from NEURON to Arbor:* Beatriz Herrera will introduce the SONATA format, which simplifies the migration process and enables cross-simulator validation, ensuring a smooth transition to Arbor for researchers familiar with NEURON. * *Plasticity simulations with Arbor:* In two talks, Jannik Luboeinski and Felix Wolf will present Arbor’s capabilities in modeling calcium-based functional plasticity as well as calcium-based distance-dependent structural plasticity, providing insights into synaptic and structural changes. * *Multi-scale co-simulation with TVB:* Thanos Manos will demonstrate Arbor’s co-simulation capabilities with The Virtual Brain (TVB) platform, illustrating the study of epilepsy propagation as an example of multi-scale modeling. This contains as a corollary the first complete wiring diagram of a visual system, which has been used to identify all 200+ cell types that are intrinsic to the Drosophila optic lobe. About half of these cell types were previously unknown, and less than 20% have ever been recorded by a physiologist. I will argue that plausible functions for many cell types can be guessed by interpreting the wiring diagram. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The seminars, **held on Wednesdays at 11 am ET,** are 45-50 min long followed by a discussion. Intelligence in nature is very diverse; it can be discussed in terms of the intelligence of chimps, dolphins, and many other animals and even the collective intelligence of very simple life forms such as ants. The concept of intelligence is being adopted in many domains of science. From practical and theoretical perspectives, an essential current research direction that is under examination by a very large number of scientists worldwide is the development of artificial systems, also called agent-based systems, which can be either individual agents or cooperative multiagent systems. These systems are embedded in the environment, possess a certain degree of autonomy, and are capable of perceiving the environment and executing actions in it. Intelligence in agent-based systems can emerge through advanced problem-solving abilities. To develop these intelligent systems, techniques such as supervised learning and unsupervised learning play pivotal roles. Supervised learning involves training systems on labeled datasets, enabling them to map inputs to outputs and improve their predictions or classifications over time. These methods are extensively used in applications such as image recognition, natural language processing, and medical diagnosis. On the other hand, unsupervised learning enables systems to identify patterns and structures in unlabeled data, facilitating clustering, anomaly detection, and exploratory data analysis. A more recent paradigm, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and cache-augmented generation (CAG), combines retrieval- and cache-based methods with generative models to enhance intelligent systems, producing highly contextualized and accurate responses or actions. These approaches are instrumental in developing advanced systems for domains such as conversational AI, knowledge management, and decision support. Intelligent agent-based systems have many real-world applications, including the health sciences and industry. The number and diversity of intelligent systems are increasing rapidly. In this context, the great challenge consists of creating increasingly intelligent systems. Another critical challenge, approached by only a few researchers worldwide, is the development of universal metrics, including black-box-based intelligence metrics, to measure the intelligence of these systems. Such advances could allow for the comparison of systems based on their intelligence. In cooperative multiagent systems, intelligence can be assessed at the system level; this is known as collective intelligence. Even in very simple cooperative multiagent systems, agents may interact nonlinearly at various decision points, resulting in emergent complexity and intelligence at the system level. This Special Issue aims to establish a solid foundation for future research through a collection of papers that advance the field by elaborating on theories, designing applications, and presenting surveys regarding the next generation of increasingly intelligent systems. The areas of research covered in these papers could include the study of self-organization, emergence, hybridization, scalability, robustness, measuring machine intelligence, and the integration of advanced paradigms such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, retrieval-augmented generation, and cache-augmented generation. PhD position in Sensory Neurotechnology

Dear all, I am excited to announce an opening for a PhD position at the Chair for Sensory Neuroengineering, Department Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU in Germany. The PhD student will work on an innovative project in the neurobiology of communication. The project will investigate neurobiological mechanisms and electrophysiological markers of speech comprehension. The PhD student will therefore develop and employ EEG hyperscanning, in which the neural activity of several subjects engaged in a conversation will be measured simultaneously. They will furthermore develop AI algorithms to analyse the obtained data. The results will contribute to better customization and real-time adaptation of hearing aids to their wearers. FAU is the most innovative university in Germany and ranks second among the most innovative European universities. It is located in one of the most attractive regions in Germany. Dear all, We are looking for a web designer to join our wonderful design team, and help build the online platform for these activities. That person would liaise with our head of design, two content designers, web developer, and webmaster. Thinking About Thinking <http://www.thinkingaboutthinking.org/> is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to cultivate and spread new computational ideas about intelligence in an open-access manner. We run Summits <http://www.algopreneurship.ai/> on Open Problems for AI and an annual conference on the Mathematics of Neuroscience and AI <http://www.neuromonster.org/>, and will soon be launching a range of online material to complement the in-person events. We are looking for someone with good experience in website design (e.g., Squarespace) that is passionate about and currently studying a degree related to intelligence (or has done in the past). This is a great organization to blend your academic and professional interests, in this case in design! Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the CNS*2025 Workshop “Modeling extracellular potentials: principles, methods, and applications” which will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Florence, Italy. Simulating large-scale neural activity is a key step in understanding brain dynamics and in linking in silico models to experimentally measurable signals such as LFP, EEG, and MEG. These simulations, ranging from detailed biophysical reconstructions to simplified proxies, enable us to connect microscale neuronal activity with meso- and macro-scale brain signals. They offer powerful tools to interpret experimental data, refine analytical techniques, and investigate brain function. Recent developments have underscored the clinical and theoretical relevance of such models, helping to elucidate mechanisms underlying neural oscillations, excitation-inhibition balance, and biomarkers of neurological disorders including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. This workshop will showcase state-of-the-art methodologies, and a wide array of applications for brain signals simulation. These systems can exhibit a manifold of global fixed points capable of implementing sophisticated input-output mappings, which we characterize analytically. Learning from extensive datasets is achieved through the stabilization of fixed points via a fully distributed and local learning process, implemented at the single-neuron level. This simple mechanism yields performance comparable to that of conventional feedforward deep neural networks trained using gradient-based methods. The effectiveness of the model stems from the dense and accessible manifolds of stable fixed points, which encode the internal representations of data. Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce the upcoming CNS*2025 Workshop "Brains and AI", to be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Florence, Italy. This workshop will explore the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence - bringing together researchers applying AI to brain data and those leveraging insights from neuroscience to build better AI systems. https://users.sussex.ac.uk/~tn41/CNS2025_workshop/ Advances in neuroscience techniques have dramatically increased the volume of data we can now collect from animal and human brains. However, this surge in data has introduced new challenges in extracting meaningful insights. Fortunately, these developments have coincided with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), which holds the potential to transform how we analyze and utilize scientific information. While there is significant potential here, we are just starting to figure out how to apply modern AI models to interpret and process scientific data, and significant challenges remain. The trend of applying AI to better understand the brain concurs with another reviving trend: applying knowledge from neuroscience to developing new AI. Indeed, despite the tremendous progress, the existing generation of AI shows significant limitations, including a lack of continual learning, poor generalization, dependence on enormous amounts of data for training, bias, and safety problems. These are features where the biological brain excels, highlighting the strong need to learn once more from neuroscience how to develop the next generation of AI. The proposed workshop will combine these two complementary trends, bringing experts from the field together to discuss how AI can facilitate new scientific discoveries and how knowledge of the brain can help improve AI. 2 year Post-Doc - Charles University in Prague - Bioinspired Recurrent Neural Network Architectures

The CSNG Lab <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Charles University is seeking a highly motivated *Postdoctoral Researcher* to join our team to work on *digital twin model of visual system. *Funded by the JUNIOR Post-Doc Fund <https://cuni.cz/UKEN-178.html>, this position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of systems neuroscience, computational modeling and AI. *Project description:* Modern deep-learning techniques have transformed visual neuroscience by substantially improving the ability of models to predict cortical neuron responses to unseen visual stimuli. However, current deep-learning methods have two major shortcomings. First, they focus on predicting only the average neural response, failing to capture the fine temporal dynamics generated within recurrent neural populations. Second, these models rely on standard "off-the-shelf" architectures optimized for efficient training rather than reflecting the biological substrate under study. As a result, they function as black boxes, making it difficult to interpret the learned representations in terms of how visual processing is organized and implemented in biological neural circuits. These limitations hinder the ability of deep-learning models to provide meaningful insights into the principles governing vision and translate them to clinical applications such as brain-machine-interface systems. To address these challenges, in this project *we will develop novel modular, multi-layer recurrent neural **network (RNN) architectures that directly mirror the architecture of the primary visual cortex.* Our models will establish a one-to-one mapping between individual neurons at different stages of the visual pathway and their artificial counterparts. They will explicitly incorporate functionally specific lateral recurrent interactions, excitatory and inhibitory neuronal classes, complex single-neuron transfer functions with adaptive mechanisms, synaptic depression, and others. We will first train our new RNNs on synthetic data generated by a state-of-the-art biologically realistic recurrent spiking model of the primary visual cortex developed in our group. After we establish the proof-of-concept on the synthetic data, we will translate our models to publicly available mouse and macaque data, as well as additional data from our experimental collaborators. *What do we offer:* We are the Computational Systems Neuroscience Group (CSNG) <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> based at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, Prague. The main goal of our group is to identify computations implemented in the neural system that underlies sensory perception, as well as applying this knowledge to the design of stimulation protocols for visual prosthetic systems. To that end, we build models of visual systems at various levels of abstraction using a variety of computational techniques including, but not limited to, machine learning and large-scale biologically plausible spiking neural network simulations. The position is *fully funded for 2 years, *and comes with a salary equivalent to ~2400 EUR/month. At Ibn Sina Neurotech School 2025, we will teach hands on knowledge of data collection and analysis with a focus on fMRI. It is ideal for graduate students and postdocs who are interested in delving into the field of fMRI data collection and analysis and also those who look into fitting their models on data and would like to understand the caveats. The language of instruction is going to be English with support for Arabic speakers and it is open to everyone regardless of background. Whether these coding dimensions causally drive decisions or merely reflect them remains unclear. Here, we investigate the mechanistic role of residual dimensions—neural activity patterns orthogonal to coding subspaces—in shaping choice behavior. We developed a recurrent neural network model that fits large-scale neural recordings and behavior, disentangling coding and residual subspaces at the single-trial level. Applied to anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and motor thalamus recordings during a delayed response task, the model reveals that perturbations along residual dimensions—but not the choice axis—reliably flip decisions, recapitulating a recent paradoxical effect observed with targeted two-photon optogenetic manipulations: activity outside the task-coding subspace exerts stronger causal influence on behavior than perturbations aligned with the choice axis. These effects arise from transient, high-dimensional feedforward trajectories shaped by residual dimensions and converging onto discrete attractor states. Crucially, residual dimensions drive dynamics in coding dimensions, rather than the reverse. To probe the trial-to-trial impact of residual activity, we modeled single-trial deviations as low-dimensional inputs that shift trajectories relative to trial-averaged dynamics. This framework captures decision variability mechanistically: errors emerge when fluctuations in residual dimensions steer dynamics toward incorrect attractors. Extending the model to include thalamocortical loops, we find that inter-area communication operates primarily through residual—not choice-selective—pathways. Together, these results challenge the classical view that decisions are governed by low-dimensional, task-aligned dynamics alone, revealing a causal and computationally essential role for residual dimensions in decision-making. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. The difference in brain state can be described as differences in the detailed causal interactions found in the underlying intrinsic brain dynamics. We use a Thermodynamics framework to quantify the breaking of the detailed balance captured by the level of asymmetry in temporal processing, i.e. the arrow of time. We also formulate a novel whole-brain model paradigm allowing us to derive the generative underlying mechanisms for changing the arrow of time between brain regions in different conditions. We found precise, distinguishing signatures in terms of the reversibility and hierarchy of large-scale dynamics in three radically different brain states (cognition, rest, deep sleep and anaesthesia) in fMRI and electrocorticography data from human and non-human primates. Overall, this provides signatures of the breaking of detailed balance in different brain states, reflecting different levels of computation. *BIO:* Gustavo Deco is a Research Professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) and a Full Professor at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), where he leads the Computational Neuroscience Group. He was also Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition from 2001 to 2021 (UPF). In 1987, he received his PhD in Physics for his thesis on Relativistic Atomic Collisions. In 1987, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bordeaux, France. From 1988 to 1990, he held a postdoctoral fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Giessen, Germany. From 1990 to 2003, he led the Computational Neuroscience Group at the Siemens Corporate Research Center in Munich, Germany. In 1997, he obtained his Habilitation (the highest academic degree in Germany) in Computer Science (Dr. rer. nat. habil.) from the Technical University of Munich for his thesis on neural learning. In 2001, he received his PhD in Psychology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Postdoc/PhD position in Computational Neuroscience in the Theory of Neural Circuits group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics under the supervision of Katharina Wilmes: We are looking for highly motivated Postdocs or PhD students, interested in computational neuroscience, specifically addressing questions concerning neural circuits underlying perception and learning. The perfect candidate has a strong background in math, physics or computer science (or equivalent), programming skills (python), and a strong interest in biological and neural systems. A background in computational neuroscience is ideal, but not mandatory. Research topic: Our brain maintains an internal model of the world, based on which it can make predictions about sensory information. These predictions are useful for perception and learning in the uncertain and changing environments in which we evolved. The link between high-level normative theories and cellular-level observations of prediction errors and representations under uncertainty is still missing. The lab uses computational and mathematical tools to model cortical circuits and neural networks on different scales. Our lab builds computational models of how the brain processes and understands natural language. We are interested in experts' perspectives on the functional organization in the brain with respect to language. Any adult researcher who is actively conducting research in language neuroscience or relevant fields is welcome to participate in the study. You will be asked to fill out a 5-minute survey that asks about your opinion on potential properties of language stimuli, and how important they are for understanding language processing in the brain. You will not be compensated for participating in the study, and no further correspondence will be made. The survey results will be included in future publications. Hands-on tutorial on Multiscale Modeling with MOOSE at CNS*2025

Python Package Release: Echo State Network 1.0.0

However, recent experiments conducted in large spaces across multiple species have revealed a much more irregular neural code than suggested by the classical view. Indeed, place cells in large environments typically fire in multiple locations, and the multiple firing fields of individual cells, as well as those of the entire population, vary considerably in size and shape. We recently showed that a simple mathematical model, wherein firing fields are generated by thresholding realizations of a random Gaussian process, accounts for the statistical properties of place fields in precise quantitative detail. This model captures the observed statistics of field sizes and positions and generates new quantitative predictions on field shapes and topologies. Moreover, these statistics are universal across species, but sensitive to the size and dimensionality of the environment. We quantitatively verified these predictions using multiple recent datasets from bats and rodents in one, two, and three dimensions, across both small and large environments. This workshop is designed to bring together computational neuroscientists and researchers with experimental and clinical background to explore cutting-edge strategies in epilepsy modeling and seizure control. For the general content structure, we plan to start from a modeler's perspective and then progressively move towards more data-driven approaches. The first session will explore seizure mechanisms through biophysical and neural mass models at different temporal and spatial scales, investigating, among others, ionic dynamics and network plasticity. It aims to understand seizure initiation, progression, and duration. The second session will focus on the application of computational models to EEG data recorded in epileptic patients. First, it will discuss the promising advances in seizure monitoring using wearable devices and long-term EEG recordings, particularly focusing on the use of data features inspired by concepts derived from mathematical modeling in epilepsy. Then, it will move on to advanced parameter inference methods to tailor models to individual data samples in order to provide mechanistic insight. The third session will examine stimulation-based strategies to terminate or prevent seizures. There will be a focus on recent advancements in closed-loop and low-frequency electrical stimulation to control seizures. CompSysBio2025: Advanced Lecture Course on Computational Systems Biology - Aussois (FR), 5-10 October 2025

One goal is to illustrate the wealth and diversity of Systems Biology issues for scientists from Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. In this role, you will contribute to our work on predicting brain health outcomes across the lifecycle. The project aims to i) identify physiological manifestations and physics-based biomarkers that allow to differentiate between healthy and accelerated brain aging; ii) create and validate multiphysical constitutive models of cortical tissues degeneration during aging and injury; iii) utilize longitudinal medical image data to infer brain aging and injury mechanisms; and iv) study the potential relationship between exposure to head impacts and the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and related dementias later in life. *Multiscale brain rhythms under healthy and epileptic conditions: computational modeling insights for clinical applications* Neural activity in the brain operates across multiple scales, encompassing both spatial and temporal dynamics. In patients with epilepsy, however, cognitive impairments are often linked to disruptions in these neural mechanisms, particularly through interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). This project aims to uncover new insights into the link between electrophysiology and attention deficits, one of the most prevalent cognitive impairments in patients with epilepsy, by exploring the role of IEDs. The PhD candidate will develop a comprehensive neocortical population model. The model will be validated on electrophysiological signals recorded in epileptic patients, and its dynamics will be studied to detail the mechanisms of multiple timescale interactions giving rise to healthy and pathological activity. The research project is at the interface between computational, cognitive, and clinical neurosciences. The candidate will preferably have some background in applied mathematics or computational neuroscience/systems biology. Programming skills in Python and knowledge of dynamical systems are required. Knowledge in cognitive neuroscience, electrophysiology and/or EEG analysis would be an asset. The brain remembers episodes not in isolation but with their contextual relationships, such as spatial or temporal proximity. This is an essential feature of the brain’s memory, but the underlying mechanism is yet to be explored. Cell assemblies, or engrams, may provide neural representations for such relationships. First, I will show a class of associative memory models that encode and retrieve multiple memory contents linked by an arbitrary graph structure through experience and demonstrate the crucial role of the balance between two inhibitory subnetwork types in the flexible retrieval of relational memories. Secondly, I propose a theoretical framework to generate a cognitive map, i.e., neural representations of relationships between memory items. This framework aims at the predictive function of the hippocampus and is based on successor representations proposed for reinforcement learning. Intriguingly, the model provides a unified account for grid cells in spatial navigation and concept cells in natural language processing. Finally, I will discuss another crucial role of the hippocampal memory system, memory replay, in a spiking neural network model. Unlike the conventional associative memory models that maintain attractor memory states, this model attempts to maximize the capacity of replayed activity patterns. Our model suggests the crucial role of inhibitory plasticity in optimizing spontaneous memory replay. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. It will bring together international and local students under the tutelage of the world's leading experts in the field. Like its international sister courses, this three-week summer school aims to teach central ideas, methods, and practices of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures and hands-on project work. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on topics across the breadth of computational neuroscience, including experimental underpinnings and machine learning analogues. The rest of the day will be spent working on research projects under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Individual research projects will focus on the modeling of neurons, neural systems, behavior, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data, and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. It also includes a week focused on neuroscience-inspired machine learning! Who should apply? This course is aimed at Masters and early-PhD level students, though Honors or advanced Undergraduates may also apply. Postdoctoral students who can motivate why the course would benefit them are also encouraged to apply. Students should have sufficient quantitative skills (e.g., a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or related fields). Some knowledge of neural biology will be useful but not essential. Experimental neuroscience students are encouraged to apply but should ensure that they have a reasonable level of quantitative proficiency (i.e., at least second-year level mathematics or statistics and have done at least one course in computer programming). Course fees and Scholarships: Course Fee: €1,550 includes all accommodation, meals, social activities, and ground transport in Cape Town. Thanks to our generous sponsors, significant financial assistance is available to reduce and waive fees for students, particularly for African applicants. We also hope to provide some limited travel bursaries for international students. Two PhD positions in computational neuroscience, Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Two Ph.D. positions are available under the supervision of Timothée Proix in the Neural Dynamics Lab (https://nldab.ch) at the Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETH Zurich, in Switzerland. The project consists in modeling neural computations involved in speech processing. The candidates will develop theoretical models, using dynamical systems and machine learning tools. The models will be fit to single-cell intracranial recordings from human participants. Candidates should have a strong background in physics, computer science, mathematics, or related fields. Programming skills in Python and knowledge of dynamical systems are required. Previous experience in neuroscience will be appreciated. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Neuroinformatics in Zurich, a vibrant and stimulating environment for neuroscience research. The positions are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and salaries are in accordance with their guidelines. The ideal start date is September 2025, with some flexibility.
