Dear Colleagues This is the first announcement for participation in the 7th International conference on Complex Networks and their Interdisciplinary Applications, Net-works 2015, which will be held in Granada (Spain) from September 16th to September 18th 2015 (Please follow the link below for further information) http://ergodic.ugr.es/networks2015/ As in previous editions, this conference is devoted to present and exchange the latest results concerning the theory and application of complex networks in different aspects of nature, society and technology. In the last years, there was an increasing interest of the computational neuroscience community in the study of the features of the complex networks underlying the structure of actual neural systems, and how these features influence their emergent behavior. For this reason, the organizing committee of Net-works 2015 encourages computational neuroscientists interested in this research topic to attend and participate in this conference. The program of Net-Works 2015 includes a set of invited plenary talks from very well- known experts in the field of complex networks, a number to be determined of talks selected from the received abstracts and one or two poster sessions. Announcing Okinawa Computational Neuroscience Course 2015

OKINAWA COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE COURSE 2015 Methods, Neurons, Networks and Behaviors June 8 - June 25, 2015 Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Japan https://groups.oist.jp/ocnc The aim of the Okinawa Computational Neuroscience Course is to provide opportunities for young researchers with theoretical backgrounds to learn the latest advances in neuroscience, and for those with experimental backgrounds to have hands-on experience in computational modeling. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 8th through June 25th, 2015 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. Applications will open on January 5th and are through the course web page (https://groups.oist.jp/ocnc) only; they will close February 8th, 2015. Applicants will receive confirmation of acceptance in March. The course has a strong hands-on component based on student proposed modeling or data analysis projects, which are further refined with the help of a dedicated tutor. Applicants are required to propose their project at the time of application. Like in preceding years, OCNC will be a comprehensive three-week course covering single neurons, networks, and behaviors with ample time for student projects. The first week will focus exclusively on methods with hands-on tutorials during the afternoons, while the second and third weeks will have lectures by international experts. We invite those who are interested in integrating experimental and computational approaches at each level, as well as in bridging different levels of complexity. There is no tuition fee. The sponsor will provide lodging and meals during the course and may support travel for those without funding. We hope that this course will be a good opportunity for theoretical and experimental neuroscientists to meet each other and to explore the attractive nature and culture of Okinawa, the southernmost island prefecture of Japan. Mahadevan, Harvard University; and Tomaso Poggio, Massachusetts Institute of Technology This intensive three-week course will give advanced students a “deep end” introduction to the problem of intelligence – how the brain produces intelligent behavior and how we may be able to replicate intelligence in machines. Today’s AI technologies, such as Watson and Siri and Deep Learning, are impressive, but their domain specificity and reliance on vast numbers of labeled examples are obvious limitations; few view this as brain-like or human intelligence. The synergistic combination of cognitive science, neurobiology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science holds the promise to build much more robust and sophisticated algorithms implemented in intelligent machines *and* to begin understanding how the brain produces the mind. The goal of this course is to help produce a community of leaders that is equally knowledgeable in neuroscience, cognitive science, and computer science. The first half of the course will focus on the intersection between biological and computational aspects of learning and vision. The second half will focus on high-level social cognition and artificial intelligence, as well as audition, speech and language processing. Throughout the course, students will participate in tutorials to gain hands on experience with these topics. The course will culminate with student projects on a chosen aspect of the problem of intelligence. The First International Conference on Mathematical Neuroscience (ICMNS)

*Second announcement* 1st International Conference on Mathematical Neuroscience (ICMNS) June 8 - 10, 2015 Antibes - Juan les Pins, France https://icmns2015.inria.fr The goal of this conference is to bring together theoretical neuroscientists and mathematicians interested in using mathematical concepts and methods for solving problems posed by neuroscience. It is motivated by the idea that many outstanding questions concerning the functioning/dysfunctioning of brains at multiple spatial and temporal scales will require the use of a wide range of mathematical tools, including, but not restricted to, functional analysis, dynamical systems theory, bifurcation theory, probability and statistics, stochastic calculus, geometry, information theory, and numerical analysis. It is also likely that neuroscience will spawn new areas of mathematics. The conference will be single track. It will feature three keynote lectures, oral presentations, and poster presentations. The keynote lecturers are Susanne Ditlevsen (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), stochastic processes in neuroscience, Bard Ermentrout (University of Pittsburgh, USA), neurodynamics, and Yves Frégnac (CNRS, France), neuroscience of vision. We welcome submissions of original research related to “learning and decision making over time to achieve a goal”, coming from any discipline or disciplines, describing empirical results from human, animal or animat experiments, and/or theoretical work, simulations and modeling. Contributions should be aimed at an interdisciplinary audience, but not at the expense of technical excellence. This is an abstract-based meeting, with no published conference proceedings. Kind regards, Markus Butz >From the research topic website: Anatomy and plasticity in large-scale brain models Supercomputing facilities are becoming increasingly available in neuroscience, predominantly for simulating the dynamics of electrical activity propagating through neuronal circuits. On today's most advanced supercomputers, large-scale models can be simulated with up to a billion of neurons. However, merely further increasing the number of neurons and synapses will not be sufficient to create biologically realistic full-scale brain models. The focus of this Research Topic is therefore on approaches that bring high-performance computing in neuroscience together with the latest experimental research in neuroanatomy. The first aspect of this Research Topic will focus on large-scale models, high-performance simulation tools, and novel hardware and data-base techniques that try or allow to capture the highest possible degree of anatomical detail. The second aspect will include approaches that introduce forms of anatomical plasticity that make detailed full-scale connectivity adaptable, e.g. to changes in experience or during learning and memory consolidation. A third aspect will capture novel concepts in the self-organization and self-repair of large-scale and full-scale brain networks, with potential applications for neural development and the diseased brain, respectively. With the aim to present work that goes beyond the current stage of high-performance computing in neuroscience, we welcome computational and technical contributions with strong emphasis on or applicability to neuroanatomical research, as well as experimental contributions that discuss important ways to improve large-scale brain models. We will consider all types of submission, from original research to more review-type articles. Proposals from all levels of faculty as well as advanced postdoctoral fellows are welcome. This is a great opportunity to organize a small meeting with just a few of the headaches of actually organizing it. *Workshop proposal submission instructions for CNS 2015* The last two days (July 22-23) of the 24^th annual CNS meeting will be devoted to workshops, in which computationally related neuroscience topics can be presented and discussed. Workshops can be anywhere between one half to two days in duration. Usually several speakers are invited to introduce a unifying theme, but ample time for discussion should also be planned. Integrated Systems Neuroscience Workshop, March 23-24th, Manchester, UK

We announce a 2-day workshop on "Integrated Systems Neuroscience", at the University of Manchester (UK), March 23-24th 2015. Systems neuroscience has been thrust centre-stage by the extraordinary advances in technology for recording and manipulating neural circuits at single-cell resolution. Yet with this rapid increase in data yield has come formidable challenges in analysing and understanding experimental results. Consequently, a tight integration between experimental and computational neuroscience approaches is increasingly necessary for tackling these challenges. The goal of this workshop is to present the state-of-the-art in integrated systems and computational approaches to key neural circuits, to demonstrate their power and potential. Each session of the programme will comprise a pair of talks presenting complementary experimental and computational work on the same circuit theme. Breaks between each session will allow for plentiful discussion of the work just seen and how it may translate to other circuits and problems in systems neuroscience. You must either already have a PhD in a relevant area or be nearing completion of your PhD studies, and must have a track record of related publications. Excellent skills in programming are essential. Candidates with expertise in modelling of sensory and neural systems, with experience of both virtual environments and real world robotics, and knowledge of behavioural and signal analysis methods will be preferred. Ideally, candidates would also be familiar with invertebrate brain and behaviour research, and/or robot navigation methods such as SLAM. The celebration of the first Nobel Prize awarded to cognitive neuroscience prods us to reach out towards language, at the frontier of human cognition. SYNTAGMA, in Trieste, http://people.sissa.it/~ale/EU_infoday/syntagma.html is a self-organizing meeting, una piazza or a crossroad, where coming from different directions we shall discuss language acquisition and its neural mechanisms. subject: Postdoc position in human sensorimotor control – Rome, Italy A postdoctoral position is available in the research group led by Andrea d’Avella (a.davella(a)hsantalucia.it [13]) in the Laboratory of Neuromotor Physiology of the Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome, Italy, to conduct studies in the area of human sensorimotor control. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in a new interdisciplinary project, funded by the H2020 program of the European Union, aiming at a step change in human-robot interaction. The consortium comprises leading robotics, computational neuroscience, and human motor control European research groups. Research will be focused on investigating human sensorimotor strategies for prediction, coordination, and control during interactive catching and throwing. Experiments will be conducted with real balls using a custom designed launching apparatus and with virtual balls simulated in an immersive multisensory virtual environment with a large field of view. Models of human sensorimotor strategies, including sensorimotor synergies, will be developed and used for assessment of human-robot interactions. Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, a real interest in human sensorimotor control, and strong quantitative and programming skills. Experience with collection and analysis of experimental data, psychophysics in virtual environments, and modeling of sensorimotor processes are valuable assets. Open PhD positions at the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Neural Circuits

Call for applications: International Max Planck Research School for Neural Circuits The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Neural Circuits was funded in 2011 by the Max Planck Society and offers ten positions every year for excellent students holding a relevant Master´s or Bachelor´s degree to perform research resulting in a PhD. The program is taught in English. All positions are completely funded (by the school and/or participating Labs), either by a contract or a fellowship. The common focus of the IMPRS for Neural Circuits will be the understanding of neural circuits (from the simple to the large and complex), at all scales required to achieve this understanding. This ambitious objective will require analyses at the molecular, cellular, multi-cellular, network and behavioral levels, with the full understanding that macroscopic phenomena (spatial patterns, dynamics) can be scale-dependent, and that reductionism is not always sufficient as a method. In the IMPRS for Neural Circuits we offer a multidisciplinary program to excellent doctoral students with backgrounds in neuroscience, mathematics, physics, computer science, (bio) chemistry, biology and medicine as well as research experience in the participating institutions of the Frankfurt Neuroscience community (see website for participating Faculty members). Students will participate in a tailor-made educational program including research rotations and neuroscience classes but also in trainings in transferable skills. Postdoc Position in Large-scale Brain Modeling

The successful candidate will become an integral part of the team that has built the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun. This work was published in Science, and received coverage around the world on CNN, BBC, CBC, and hundreds of other outlets. We are building the next generation of computational platforms to run such models. This position will focus on using supercomputers (e.g., IBM BlueGene) to run models written in the Nengo environment (http://nengo.ca) Nengo is a general neural simulation environment that, in addition to Spaun, has been used to simulate adaptive arm controllers, state-of-the-art vision systems, natural language processors, reinforcement learners, and novel robotic controllers among many other projects. Call for Papers Special Issue in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience 'Neuropsychology through the lenses of Computational Modelling' Computational modelling may provide an increasingly important tool for furthering neuropsychology and understanding brain impairments – but there remain many issues: how can different types of lesion be best modelled? What are the differences between damage to grey matter and to fibre tracts? What the effects of learning within damaged systems or systems where there is an imbalance in neurotransmitters? For this reason a special issue that brings together state-of-the-art papers on the computational modelling of neuropsychological disorders, with papers covering different levels of modelling (from spiking neurons to higher-level connectionist modelling), using imaging as well as behavioural data, and addressing a number of different disorders (attention, language, memory etc.) is expended to contribute significantly to the field of Neuropsychology and Computational Neuroscience. In collaboration with Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience, we are organizing a Research Topic titled "Neuropsychology through the lenses of computational modelling”, hosted by Eirini Mavritsaki, Glyn Humphreys. As host editor, I would like to encourage you to contribute to this topic. Brain-related illnesses affect more than two billion people worldwide, and the numbers are growing. Reducing this burden is a major challenge for society. The Centre for Doctoral Training in Neurotechnology for Life and Health will train a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers at the interface of neuroscience and engineering, to address this challenge. The Centre spans the Faculties of Engineering, Natural Sciences and Medicine at Imperial, with investigators from the Departments of Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computing, Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, and the Division of Brain Sciences. Directed by Dr Simon Schultz, Prof Bill Wisden and Prof Paul Matthews, it intends to admit approximately 14 students per year. "The Heisenberg Research Group of Computational Biology at the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany announces a Research Position (100%, EG TV-L 13) in computational neuroscience for the duration of up to three years. The position is available in the externally funded project "Central pattern generators and reflexive feedback in insect locomotion: a cross-species study". Animal locomotion begins in the central nervous system and results in quantifiable mechanical activity; it therefore provides an excellent entry point into the neural computations that create intentional behaviors that respond to environmental conditions. Locomotion originates in central pattern generators: neural networks in the spinal cord of vertebrates and thoracic ganglia of insects which produce rhythmic movements. Some preparations (e.g. lamprey, crayfish) can generate stable, near-periodic rhythms in isolation, others require sensory feedback either to produce functional gaits or for the stabilization of the rhythms. Cockroaches and stick insects exemplify these two extremes. They share the same basic neural and biomechanical architecture, but the former run rapidly over rough ground, while the latter are adapted for slow walking on twigs and leaves with varying orientations with regard to gravity. Using existing information and collecting new data, this project will compare these species and address questions as described in the work plan. The development of integrated mathematical and computational models is central to answering such questions. New data will improve existing models, and new models will be created to span the morphological and behavioral ranges from stick insects to cockroaches, allowing us to illuminate their adaptive strategies to different environments. The objective of our research project is to deepen our understanding of the generation and control of locomotion. This collaborative project is performed jointly by the groups of Drs. Biomimetics is the development of novel technologies through the distillation of principles from the study of biological systems. The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second, biomimetic technologies can provide useful, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering. Biohybrid systems are formed by combining at least one biological component—an existing living system—and at least one artificial, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The following are some examples: • Biomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors, actuators, processors) that can intelligently interact with their environments. • Active biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair. • Biomimetic computers—neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for intelligent behaviour. • Biohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neural implants. • Artificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and intelligent prostheses. • Organism-level biohybrids such as robot-animal or robot-human systems. ACTIVITIES The main conference will take the form of a three-day single-track oral and poster presentation programme, 29th to 31st July 2015, hosted at the La Pedrera, Barcelona, Spain. The conference programme will include five plenary lectures from leading international researchers in biomimetic and biohybrid systems, and the demonstrations of state-of-the-art living machine technologies The full conference will be preceded by up to two days of Sateliite Events hosted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. SUBMITTING TO LIVING MACHINES 2015 We invite both full papers and extended abstracts in areas related to the conference themes. All contributions will be refereed and accepted papers will appear in the Living Machines 2015 proceedings which we expect to be published in the Springer-Verlag LNAI Series. Full papers (upto 12 pages) are invited from researchers at any stage in their career but should present significant findings and advances in biomimetic or biohybid research; more preliminary work would be better suited to extended abstract submission (minimum 4 pages). Olfactory Modeling Workshop

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) is now accepting applications for its Investigative Workshop, "Olfactory Modeling," to be held March 2-4, 2015, at NIMBioS. Objectives: The sense of smell is important for all animals; odors are associated with identifying and locating food, determining food quality, and identifying threats. In humans, loss of sense of smell occurs with normal aging and is associated with a loss in quality of life. A decline in the ability to detect and discriminate odors also can be a harbinger of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the olfactory system is an important model system for exploring neural computation including changes in neural circuits in response to the environment and experience. The olfactory system provides specific advantages for understanding learning and memory, one of the most important goals in neuroscience. Technological advances have led to a wealth of information about how olfactory coding takes place in the mammalian nervous system, where experimental approaches range from large-scale measurement of neural activity during behavior to manipulation of activity via optogenetics. Integration of these data through comprehensive models of the neural networks involved in olfactory processing will advance our understanding of olfaction, including the relationship between neural activity and behavior. This workshop will review the current state of the mathematical approaches and tools for modeling olfaction, identify tasks that will maximize the impact of individual projects, and establish collaborations for large-scale modeling of this system, with a focus on incorporating realistic biophysical mechanisms for learning and memory. Postdoctoral / doctoral student position in Computational Neuroscience for a Germany – Japan collaborative project: Development of the functional organization in visual cortex.

POSITION: The group of Matthias Kaschube at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) in Frankfurt, Germany, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher or doctoral student who will develop and analyze a neural circuit model of mouse visual cortex development. This is for a newly funded joint project with the experimental group of Kenichi Ohki at Kyushu University in Japan. The position will emphasize theoretical and computational work, but an active engagement with neural data analysis is desired. Our aim in this project is to identify the changes in circuitry that underlay the reorganization of visual response properties in mouse visual cortex upon eye opening. The position is available immediately, for up to three years. LAB ENVIRONMENT: The work will be carried out primarily at FIAS, a research institution dedicated to fundamental theoretical research in various areas of science. FIAS hosts state-of-the-art facilities and has tight links to neuroscience centers at the Goethe University, the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Ernst Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience. Tenure-Track Position in Vertebrate Neurophysiology The Neuroscience Program in the Department of Biological Sciences at Ohio University invites applications for a full time tenure-track position in Vertebrate Neurophysiology. Candidates should have expertise in vertebrate electrophysiology, broadly defined, and interests in computational modeling approaches to enable interaction with faculty in Ohio University's interdisciplinary Quantitative Biology Institute (QBI). GENESIS 2.4 final release now available

The November 2014 GENESIS 2.4 release is the first major revision of the GENESIS 2 neural simulator since the "final" release of GENESIS 2.3 in March 2006. Afterwards, development efforts shifted towards GENESIS 3 (G-3), a 21st century neural simulator without the limitations of GENESIS 2 and other simulators that were developed in the late 1980's and 90's. At this point, G-3 is still in the development stage. Although GENESIS 2.3 was intended to be the last release of the GENESIS 2 series, it has continued to used and to evolve, with modifications needed to efficiently implement synaptic plasticity in large networks and many contributions from users. This has made it necessary for a new November 2014 GENESIS 2.4 release. This new release is now avalable for download from the GENESIS 2 website http://genesis-sim.org/GENESIS/. If any of you will be attending SfN, you can find out more about it at my poster 99.09 (TT88) on Sat, Nov. 15, 2014, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM The GENESIS 2.4 release includes: * The 'stdp_rules' object, documentation, and Scripts for implementing spike timing dependent plasticity in networks of hsolved cells * New network connection commands allow distance-dependent connection probabilities and/or weights, or the use of periodic boundary conditions for network connectivity. * The chemesis library for modeling second messengers and calcium dynamics * Various user-contributed bug-fixes, utilities, and improvements. * A new autoconf-based build system, so that a simple "./configure" command will create the appropriate Makefile. This has been tested under recent Linux and Mac OSX versions. Release of MOOSE 3.0.0 "Kheer Kadam"

We announce the release of MOOSE 3.0.0 "Kheer Kadam" Websites: http://moose.ncbs.res.in, http://sourceforge.net/projects/moose MOOSE is the Multiscale Object-Oriented Simulation Environment. It is designed to simulate neural systems ranging from subcellular components and biochemical reactions to complex models of single neurons, circuits, and large networks. MOOSE can operate at many levels of detail, from stochastic chemical computations, to multicompartment single-neuron models, to spiking neuron network models. There are several big changes in 3.0.0:: - Major feature developments for multiscaling, including deterministic reaction-diffusion calculations, a substantial set of classes for Leaky Integrate-and-Fire neuronal networks, and abstract plastic synapses. - Extensive example-based documentation in a new MOOSE Cookbook. - An entirely new and faster messaging system. - An evolution of the Python interface to use object arrays. - Automatic scheduling of all objects upon creation. This release also has a reworked version of the GUI, which is currently in alpha but can be used to run and build kinetic models. About the name: Kheer Kadam is a sweet from Bengal. Positions at both the junior and senior level are available. Dear Colleagues: This is the final reminder that the 2015 American Physical Society (APS) March meeting (March 2-6, 2015; San Antonio, TX) will emphasize “Physics of Neural Systems” as one of the focus topics supported by the Division of Biological Physics. We expect multiple sessions resulting from this focus topic, addressing recent advances in understanding of the structure and the dynamics of neural circuits responsible for sensing, memory, and motor output. Arguably, in the last few years, we have found out more about the dynamics of neural circuits than we have in all of the previous decades combined. Thus we solicit submissions of contributed presentations to the March meeting, focusing on a broad range of topics on the intersection of physics and neuroscience, such as quantitative experimental protocols, modeling of neural dynamics, analysis of collective computation in neural circuits, and others. Can local inhibition lead to long-range competition?

Dear colleagues, We would like to draw your attention to a recent publication, where we examine the spatial range of competition expected for columnar visual cortex, given known features of cortical anatomy. Reprints are freely available from the author’s homepage (see link below). Models of cortex that assume long-range competition are widespread, although it has long been known through anatomical studies that the spatial extent of inhibition is in fact more restricted than that of excitation. We analyzed straightforward models of interacting cortical columns, and performed simulations of larger models, to show how the spatial scales of excitation and inhibition interact to produce competition through disynaptic inhibition. We found that although disynaptic inhibition is widespread, the presence of competition across the cortical surface is predicted well by the anatomy of direct excitatory and inhibitory coupling. In comparison, the effect of multisynaptic network interactions was very small. This implies that for realistic models of cortex, which should include short-range inhibition and longer-range excitation, the spatial extent of competition is likely to be even narrower than the range of inhibitory connections. Postdoctoral position in computational systems neuroscience (sensory processing & decision-making) We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Ralf Haefner in the department for Brain & Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester (NY). The focus of our group is on understanding the neural basis of perceptual inference. Based on the assumption that the brain performs probabilistic inference using an internal model of the world, we ask questions such as: What is the nature of the internal model? How is it learnt? How are posterior beliefs represented by spiking responses of populations of neurons and what algorithm does the brain use to compute its beliefs? The position requires strong mathematical and good programming skills. The ideal candidate would also be familiar with machine learning techniques, especially regarding generative models and MCMC-sampling-based probabilistic inference. Possible research projects range from purely theoretical to data-driven. Our collaborations with electrophysiology labs allow for testing of theoretical models using state-of-the-art cortical population recordings in vivo and, if desired, the opportunity to record your own data. The Beauchamp Lab at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston (http://openwetware.org/wiki/Beauchamp) seeks a postdoctoral fellow for a federally-funded research program. The main focus of the lab is to understand the neural substrates of multisensory integration and visual perception. The laboratory uses multiple techniques, including fMRI and electrocorticography: experience with one of these techniques (or related) is a requirement. Data analysis is carried out with specialized software, including AFNI, EEGlab and Fieldtrip, requiring that applicants be comfortable with writing and modifying C-shell scripts. An interest in computational and quantitative modeling of behavioral and neuroimaging data is an asset. Houston has a rich neuroimaging and neuroscience community, with Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as partners in the Gulf Coast Consortia for quantitative biomedical sciences. CFP: Special Issue on Neurobiologically Inspired Robotics: Enhanced Autonomy Through Neuromorphic Cognition

Dear Comp-Neuro, I hope some of you will consider submitting to this special issue of Neural Networks. Neurobiologically inspired robotics goes by many names: brain-based devices, cognitive robots, neurorobots, and neuromorphic robots, to name a few. The field has grown into an exciting area of research and engineering. The common goal is twofold: Firstly, developing a system that demonstrates some level of cognitive ability can lead to a better understanding of the neural machinery that realizes cognitive function. The often used phrase, “understanding through building”, implies that one can get a deep understanding of a system by constructing physical artifacts that can operate in the real-world. In building and studying neurobiologically inspired robots, scientists must address theories of neuroscience that couple brain, body, and behavior. Secondly, the deep theoretical understanding of cognition, neurobiology and behavior obtained by constructing physical systems, could lead to a system that demonstrates capabilities commonly found in the animal kingdom, but rarely found in artificial systems, most notably their adaptive and flexible autonomous behavior. There have already been some successes that meet these goals. For example, navigation models based on the hippocampus are now deployed on robots that autonomously explore their environment. Machine image processing systems based on visual cortex have been used in a number of unsupervised recognition and perception applications. Robots designed to address impairments due to disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, and attentional deficit disorders, are being used as therapeutic and diagnostic tools without the need for constant caretaker supervision. Despite these successes, the field is still in its infancy and basic research is needed. In particular, we are interested in papers that describe: 1) How models of cognitive functions, such as attention, decision-making, learning and memory, perception, and social cognition can be constructed on physical robots. 2) How the neuromorphic devices, which are designed to run neural algorithms with low-power, can advance the construction of autonomous robotics. 3) How the theoretical and engineering lessons learned from constructing neurobiologically inspired robots can transfer to autonomous robots carrying out practical applications. This Special Issue invites papers that address the three broad topics described above. PhD in “Fragmented neural processing in Parkinson's disease” at University of Manchester, Faculty of Life Sciences

PhD in “Fragmented neural processing in Parkinson's disease”. Applications are invited for this fully-funded PhD position (fees and salary) in the lab of Dr Mark Humphries in the Faculty of Life Science, University of Manchester Deadline: 12th December 2014 Start date: September 2015 Duration: 3 or 4 years, depending on qualifications Eligibility: Candidates must be nationals of the UK or other EU country This project will pursue the hypothesis that chronic loss of dopamine causes the fragmentation of striatal processing of cortical input. The striatum supports neural populations coding for different actions, forming the basis for action selection. Animal model data has suggested that chronic dopamine loss causes the fragmentation of these populations, mixing together previously well-defined populations (Cho et al 2002 J Comp Neurol). To test this hypothesis, the candidate will develop our existing large-scale model of the striatal network (Humphries et al, 2010, PLoS Comput Biol) and combine it with a newly-developed model of dopamine-dependent plasticity at cortical synapses onto striatal neurons (Gurney et al, PLoS Biol, in press). The project will then test aspects of the hypothesis: Does fragmentation occur via changes to network excitability or to plastic change to network inputs? Does fragmentation cause the breakdown of action selection and therefore the observed motor symptoms? And why is 80% loss of dopamine necessary for this to occur? Assistant or Associate Professor, Health or Biomedical Data Analytics Rowan University is a comprehensive state-designated research institution with approximately 15,000 students. The Department of Biomedical & Translational Sciences in the School of Biomedical Science & Health Professions invites applications for a tenure-track Associate or Assistant Professor position in the field of Health or Biomedical Data Analytics starting September 1, 2015. The successful candidate will assume a leadership role in the newly established Data Analytics programand is expected to develop an externally-funded research program in Health or Biomedical Data Analytics that involves undergraduate and/or graduate (MS) students. Call for Papers - Neural Networks special issue on Big Data

Special Issue on Neural Network Learning in Big Data [Special Issue on Neural Network Learning in Big Data] Neural Networks Special Issue: Neural Network Learning in Big Data Big data is much more than storage of and access to data. Analytics plays an important role in making sense of that data and exploiting its value. But learning from big data has become a significant challenge and requires development of new types of algorithms. Most machine learning algorithms encounter theoretical challenges in scaling up to big data. Plus there are challenges of high dimensionality, velocity and variety for all types of machine learning algorithms. The neural network field has historically focused on algorithms that learn in an online, incremental mode without requiring in-memory access to huge amounts of data. The brain is arguably the best and most elegant big data processor and is the inspiration for neural network learning methods. Neural network type of learning is not only ideal for streaming data (as in the Industrial Internet or the Internet of Things), but could also be used for stored big data. For stored big data, neural network algorithms can learn from all of the data instead of from samples of the data. And the same is true for streaming data where not all of the data is actually stored. In general, online, incremental learning algorithms are less vulnerable to size of the data. Neural network algorithms, in particular, can take advantage of massively parallel (brain-like) computations, which use very simple processors, that other machine learning technologies cannot. Specialized neuromorphic hardware, originally meant for large-scale brain simulations, is becoming available to implement these algorithms in a massively parallel fashion. Neural network algorithms, therefore, can deliver very fast and efficient real-time learning through the use of hardware and this could be particularly useful for streaming data in the Industrial Internet. Neural network technologies thus can become significant components of big data analytics platforms and this special issue will begin that journey with big data. For this special issue of Neural Networks, we invite papers that address many of the challenges of learning from big data. In particular, we are interested in papers on efficient and innovative algorithmic approaches to analyzing big data (e.g. deep networks, nature-inspired and brain-inspired algorithms), implementations on different computing platforms (e.g. neuromorphic, GPUs, clouds, clusters) and applications of online learning to solve real-world big data problems (e.g. health care, transportation, and electric power and energy management). RECOMMENDED TOPICS: Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Autonomous, online, incremental learning - theory, algorithms and applications in big data 2. Postdoctoral Position in Neuroscience (BRAIN Initiative project): In vivo imaging of cortical dynamics

Dear all, A postdoctoral position utilizing in vivo 2-photon imaging is available in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Kanold at the University of Maryland. The laboratory studies the function, development, and plasticity of the cerebral cortex (http://www.kanold.org) We are seeking highly motivated individuals that want to join exciting collaborative project, together with Dr. Dietmar Plenz (NIMH, http://www.nimh.nih.gov/labs-at-nimh/principal-investigators/dietmar-plenz.…) and Dr. Wolfgang Losert (UMd Physics), funded by the NIH BRAIN initiative. We use in vivo 2-photon imaging and stimulation technology that allows rapid imaging and stimulation in multiple focal planes and aim to develop new analysis techniques based on dynamic systems and graph theoretic measures to extract network dynamics at the single neuron and population level. We aim to identify the influence of single neurons relative to the synergistic influence of specific groups of neurons (the crowd) on network dynamics and ultimately behavior of the animal (see http://www.clfs.umd.edu/biology/kanold/Research.html) The ideal candidate will have a PhD in neuroscience, engineering, or related discipline, a background in systems neuroscience, and an ability to work in a large multidisciplinary team. Postodoctoral Position in Computational Neuroscience of Alcohol Addiction (ENS-Paris France- Indiana USA)

A postdoctoral position is available for a USA-France collaborative project on the influence of alcohol on the central dopamine system. The project combines computational and experimental techniques. The post-doc will design and analyze a biophysical computational models of the brain circuitry affected by alcohol. The position is available immediately for up to three years. The position is based at the Group for Neural Theory, Ecole Normale Superieure Paris France, with extensive research visits between two institutions: Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, and École Normale Supérieure, Paris, France. In Paris, he or she will work with Prof. Gutkin (Group of Neural Theory, ENS) and Prof. Mamelli (Institut du Fer a Moulin, INSERM) on circuit level models. In Indianapolis, the post-doc will work with Prof. Kuznetsov (Mathematics Dept.) and Prof. Lapish (Psychology Dept.) on cellular level models. USA-Israel Postdoctoral Position

*Postdoctoral Position* University of Arizona and University of Haifa The Computational and Experimental Neuroscience Laboratory is looking to fill a position for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. The research project is geared towards understanding the role of hippocampal replay in spatial navigation and memory consolidation during sleep. The techniques used include high density electrophysiology in the behaving rat, neuropharmacology, optogenetics and computational modeling. The project is multidisciplinary and involves collaborations with research teams in the USA and France (Univ. South Florida Tampa, INSERM Lyon France, Harvard Univ MA, UCSD, UCR and Salk, California). Good communication skills are necessary. This is a joint position between the University of Haifa (Israel) and the University of Arizona (Tucson, USA). Thanks a lot, Michael --- snip --- Doctoral Research Position at the University of Freiburg, Germany The University of Freiburg invites candidates to apply for a fully funded three-year PhD position (TV-L E13). The job offers a novel perspective to relevant problems in robotics in an inter-disciplinary approach involving engineering, artificial intelligence / machine learning, neuroscience and assistive technology. The interaction between a (semi-autonomous) robotic device (e.g., a robotic wheelchair) and a human user is often ruled by a set of strategies executed by the robot. Typical robotic tasks are to accomplish a navigation task, to map the environment or to manipulate objects of the environment. The user may either control the actions of the robot or be an interaction partner for the robot. The level of control the user has over the robot's actions can be placed on the continuum between absolute low-level control (e.g., a joystick), over mid-level control ("turn right on next occasion") up to high-level control ("take me to the kitchen"). While state-of-the-art robotic control already takes the changing environment into account before strategies are selected and executed, the internal state of the user and fluctuations thereof typically are disregarded. Examples of informative mental states of users would be the level of task-induced workload, the sense of control/agency in the current situation or the perceived complexity of the current situation. In the project, relevant internal mental states of the user shall continuously be assessed. Therefore, electrophysiological recordings (e.g., EEG, MEG, GSR, HRV, etc.) will be exploited with methods developed in the field of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Upon successful decoding of a mental state of interest, the robotic behavior can be adapted specifically to an individual user and to the perceived situation. Using the resulting co-adaptive strategy between human and robot, we expect an enhancement of usability and user acceptance during various tasks in human-robot interaction. During the project, expected tasks will comprise offline experiments with assessment of electrophysiological signals, simulated robotic control, offline and online data analysis with BCI methods, online experiments with a robotic application and mental state monitoring, evaluation of adaptive strategies of the robot. The candidate is expected to actively participate in the dissemination of research results in publications, on conferences and by teaching. The target group are candidates with a degree at master level in robotics, computer science, artificial intelligence / machine learning, electrical engineering or cognitive science, with a strong relation to science, technology or innovation studies. Candidates are expected to have practical experience in all of the three fields robotics, machine learning/AI, and Brain-Computer Interfaces. We furthermore expect outstanding qualifications, the motivation to obtain a Doctoral degree and the interest to work in an interdisciplinary environment. 2014 SFN Mtg Workshop: Portal for parallel simulations

A few seats remain open for the workshop Using the Neuroscience Gateway Portal (NSG) for Parallel Simulations which will be held on the morning of Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 9 AM to Noon in Washington DC as a satellite to the SFN 2014 meeting. The NSG is being developed with suport from NSF to help neuroscientists access high performance computing resources.
