We would like to draw your attention to the fourth IBRO-SIMONS COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE IMBIZO #isiCNI2020 5 - 26 January 2020, Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town, South Africa http://imbizo.africa/ Application deadline: 30th June 2019 The #isiCNI2020 is a southern hemisphere summer school aiming to promote computational neuroscience in Africa. It will bring together international and local students under the tutelage of the world's leading experts in the field. Like its international sister courses, this three-week summer school aims to teach central ideas, methods, and practices of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures and hands-on project work. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on topics across the breadth of experimental and computational neuroscience. The rest of the day will be spent working on research projects under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Individual research projects will focus on the modelling of neurons, neural systems, behaviour, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data, and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. Who should apply? This course is aimed at Masters and early-PhD level students though Honours or advanced undergraduates may also apply. Postdoctoral students who can motivate why the course would benefit them are also encouraged to apply, Students should have sufficient quantitative skills, (e.g. a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering or related field). Some knowledge of neural biology will be useful but not essential. Experimental neuroscience students are encouraged to apply, but should ensure that they have a reasonable level of quantitative proficiency (i.e. at least second-year level mathematics or statistics and have done at least one course in computer programming). PhD positions in Neuromorphic machine learning, AI and robotics for chemical sensing Biocomputation Group University of Hertfordshire UK We are seeking candidates who want to join an international team of researchers with the goal to push the boundaries of chemical discovery. We use machine learning, AI and robotics to develop new methods for chemical sensing (electronic noses), gas-based navigation in robots, and knowledge discovery in chemical space. Our group leverages a new kind of computing hardware, so called neuromorphic systems, to translate processes from the brain into algorithms for efficient computing. We take inspiration from neuroscience to develop massively parallel, event-based, and power-efficient algorithms for machine learning, inference and control. Possible project topics include: * Bio-inspired signal processing and pattern recognition for chemical sensing, * Gas-based navigation for robots, * Deep learning for fragrance and aroma discovery, * Computing on neuromorphic hardware. The overarching goal is to exploit computational approaches to brain and behaviour to leverage insights into core deficits that underpin behavioural change and mental well-being. Postodoctoral position in Computational Auditory Neuroscience

Postodoctoral position in Computational Auditory Neuroscience Applications are invited to fill an NIH-funded post-doctoral position at the University of Pennsylvania in the Departments of Otorhinolaryngology (Hearing Science Center; Yale Cohen) and Physics (Vijay Balasubramanian) and the Computational Neuroscience Initiative (Vijay Balasubramanian and Yale Cohen). This project focuses on identifying the neural and computational basis of auditory-object perception in Old World monkeys. The work combines auditory psychophysics, large-scale neuronal recordings, and computational theory. Candidates are expected to have a PhD (or equivalent) related to neuroscience, engineering, physics, psychology, or similar disciplines. Candidates with backgrounds in computational theory are especially encouraged to apply. Preferred candidates will have experience in training Old World monkeys on behavioral tasks, recording neuronal activity while monkeys are engaged in behavior, and using computational approaches to analyze the data. The intellectual environment of the University of Pennsylvania is outstanding for computational auditory neuroscience. The Hearing Sciences Center, which is directed by Cohen, is a multi-investigator group that identifies neuronal correlates of hearing and communication at multiple scales of interrogation, using state-of-the-art computational and causal techniques. The Computational Neuroscience Initiative, which is directed by Balasubramanian, gathers together the Penn faculty who are fundamentally interested in systems and computational approaches to neuroscience. The CNI is the central home for research in theoretical and computational neuroscience at Penn. Candidates will have access and mentorship from faculty in both the Hearing Sciences Center and the Computational Neuroscience Initiative. This will be a full-time, 12-month renewable appointment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and consistent with NIH NRSA stipends. We anticipate a Fall 2019 start date.

Post-doc in Computational Neuroimaging of Decision-Making

We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to make a leading contribution to an EU-funded project on the neurobiology of human decision making. The post will be based at the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Leeds. The aim of our research is to characterise the spatiotemporal dynamics and the computational principles of the brain networks underlying the processing of multisensory information, the formation of perceptual decisions and the execution of subsequent actions. To this end, we use multimodal recordings including neuroimaging (EEG), motor signals (EMGs and kinematics) and behavioural data coupled with advanced multivariate analysis methods and computational modelling. We develop computational methodologies inspired by machine learning, statistical signal processing, information theory and Bayesian modelling to fuse data from different modalities, extract the main patterns of brain activity and characterise their functional roles with respect to the task at hand. The goal of this project will be to unravel the neural representations of the mental processes implicated in the processing of (multi-)sensory information and the formation of perceptual decisions. Candidates must have previous practical experience in EEG recordings and data analysis as evident by a strong track record of publications in international journals. Working knowledge of multivariate data analysis techniques and excellent programming skills in Matlab and/or Python are highly desirable. We will emphasise how advances in our understanding of the dynamics of brain networks can be used to make a difference to people with epilepsy at all points of their journey: from elucidating the causes of the first seizure to diagnosing epilepsy, understanding how ictogenic networks give rise to recurrent seizures and how this insight can inform personalised treatment. To encourage this focus on translatable output of research we will seek to include all relevant communities. In addition to focussing on current scientific, clinical and technological advances, we will take steps to increase accessibility for people with lived experience of epilepsy. Dear all, A PhD position in computational neuroscience is available at the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The main objective of the project is to investigate the neural mechanisms of multisensory perception and sensory predictions, within the context of a novel theoretical framework of perception and consciousness that is being developed in the Group. These neural mechanisms will be investigated using theoretical and computational approaches based on both biophysically detailed models of corticothalamic circuits and neural network models trained with deep learning strategies. The research is partially funded by the Human Brain Project and will benefit from collaborations with local experimental teams and with other European research groups. The project will be supervised by Jorge Mejias (leader of the Computational Neuroscience Team) and Cyriel Pennartz (head of the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group). We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in neuroscience (with strongly developed quantitative skills) or in a related field, including physics, mathematics, computer science, or biomedical engineering. The candidate is expected to have a solid mathematical background (calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems) and strong programming skills (MATLAB, Python). Knowledge in methods of computational neuroscience and deep learning is a plus. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. We offer a full-time appointment for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive performance evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,325 in the first year to €2,972 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scale for PhD candidates. MODELING LANGUAGE IN THE HUMAN BRAIN USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS A joint postdoctoral position is available in the labs of Christopher Honey and Tal Linzen at Johns Hopkins University. ( https://www.honeylab.org and https://caplabjhu.org ) The goal of this project is to use state-of-the-art artificial neural networks to understand the mechanisms and architectures that enable the human brain to integrate linguistic information at the levels of syllables, words and sentences. For this purpose, the project lead will have access to high-fidelity intracranial recordings from the surface of the human brain, as people process sentences and narratives. In parallel, this project is expected to generate new computational models and analytic methods for natural language processing (NLP), informed and constrained by human data. Johns Hopkins is home to a large and vibrant community in neuroscience and computational linguistics, and the training environment will span the Departments of Cognitive Science, Psychological & Brain Sciences, and Computer Science. In particular, we will focus on causal learning in the context of goal-directed instrumental behaviors, which rely on learning rules determined by the contingency//between actions and outcomes. In order to unravel the neural and computational bases of action-outcome causal learning, we need to lift two key barriers. The first barrier is the lack of neurocomputational models that formalise the above-mentioned theoretical framework to make precise predictions about the underlying neural computations. The second barrier is the lack of clear understanding of the brain network dynamics supporting action-outcome causal learning. *Activities: * The selected candidate will contribute to lift the first barrier, by developing neurocomputational models that: i) formalise internal representations and computations predicted by causal learning theories (/rational /and /Bayesian /frameworks); ii) make predictions about the dynamics of neural activity (i.e., neurobiological plausibility) and fit single-participant behavioral patterns (i.e., computational flexibility). Among the possible learning models, two seem to provide the adequate theoretical and computational framework: Active Inference and Reinforcement learning. The former is a Bayesian approach postulating that human behaviour can be reduced to the minimization of variational free energy, which is an upper bound on Shannon surprise (Friston, 2010). The latter provides a complementary view and formalizes human behavior as a process that aims at maximizing cumulative (extrinsic or intrinsic) reward (Sutton & Barto, 1998). The selected candidate will help designing a new experimental protocol to test the specific predictions of these computational frameworks, and compare them with Bayesian model comparison methods. The experiment will involve human subjects and be realized with the facilities of the GATE (Experimental Economics) laboratory in Lyon, France. Then we will derive a computational model which best accounts for human behavior while they learn causalities, and make model-driven predictions for a new task involving brain imaging (fMRI, MEG, SEEG) performed in humans by partners of the project. *Skills*: Applicants should be highly motivated, have a PhD in computational neuroscience, physics, computer science, or related fields, with a track record of publications. Confirmed experience in computational modelling and programming skills are mandatory. The Language in Interaction research consortium, sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB!), September 4-10, 2019 [Second announcement]

The new Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group project aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. Proficiency in either Python or Matlab is also required. Applications are invited for post-doctoral research position in the laboratory of Dr. Maxim Bazhenov at the University of California, San Diego to study memory and learning and to develop neuroscience inspired algorithms capable of continual learning, generalization of knowledge and adaptation to the novel situations and contexts.This project involves close collaboration with the experimental laboratory of Dr. Bruce McNaughton. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance the knowledge of how human and animal brains learn from experience and apply these principles to the artificial systems to enable continuous learning without catastrophic forgetting. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of researchers to design anatomically realistic neuronal network models of dynamic interactions between the hippocampus and neocortex during learning and memory consolidation in sleep and awake based on experimental data. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Section on Neurobiology of Fear & Anxiety. This section examines neural systems models of emotion/cognition interactions. This is done in two ways: one that focuses on anxiety in health and disease, and the other that uses a developmental perspective using large datasets. Four types of data are exploited, clinical/behavioral assessment, psychophysiology, fMRI (particularly 7T high-resolution scanner) and MEG. The candidate must have a doctoral degree (PhD) in computational neuroscience, or computer science/engineering and at least 5 years of experience post Ph.D. analyzing large datasets, modeling complex neural systems, using advanced machine learning algorithms. Experience with technical computing in MATLAB, R, C++ and a strong mathematical skill set is required. Knowledge of multi threaded and paralell computing environments is desirable. An interest in neuroscience or prior experience in neuroscience related fields is a plus. The staff scientist is expected to be a key member of the Section on Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety, contributing to analytical methodology, design of new projects. So in order to understand the activity of neurons we record from, we want to know the wiring between them. But current technology does not allow the simultaneous recording and tracing of the connections between neurons. To solve this problem, this project will develop computational techniques to accurately infer wiring between neurons from the next generation of imaging techniques that directly record neuron voltages. We use methods from neural networks and machine learning. It is also planned to simulate experiments done with rat and/or mice by our experimental partners. The position is part of a joint team with Prof. Sen Cheng working on developing a system-level model of hippocampal function for memory and navigation. This is being done in close interaction with a team working on similar questions from the machine learning perspective. Teaching: There is a teaching load of 3 hours per week during the semester, in particular for a programming course in python. Time: The appointment will be for three years and can then be extended for one more year if needed. The position is immediately available. The Lab of Jerry Chen at Boston University is hiring a Data Scientist to be involved in several multi-year BRAIN Initiative related NIH and NSF funded projects. These projects focus on understanding cortical computation during behavior by combining large-scale population recordings, anatomical reconstructions, and transcriptional profiling as well as developing tools for large-scale and high-speed imaging of neuronal populations. Postdoc opportunity in computational/human vision at the University of Toronto

University of Toronto, Bernhardt-Walther Lab and Semantic Technology Lab A Post-doctoral position in computational modeling of vision and knowledge acquisition is available with Dirk Bernhardt-Walther (Psychology) and Michael Grüninger (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) at the University of Toronto. We seek a colleague who shares our interest in explaining how structured knowledge about the world arises through visual perception. The project combines formal logic in ontologies with perceptual grouping of visual elements in complex, real-world scenes. Optionally, the project may involve measuring brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The ideal candidate has a strong computational and mathematical background, experience with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques and/or a strong background in computational neuroscience. The ability to communicate with a diverse team of researchers from engineering and psychology is an essential prerequisite. Current state-of-the-art computational models of visual processing are trained to extract visual features of increasing complexity in a hierarchy of layers, choosing a label from a pretrained set of categories at the apex of the hierarchy. Such systems lack an important aspect of the human visual system – a notion of meaning of visual content. The project aims to develop a new model of visual perception, which integrates the generation of networks of meaning into all levels of the visual processing hierarchy, thus allowing structured visual knowledge to arise naturally from visual perception. Specifically, this will involve the generation of a large database of images of real-world scenes with detailed ontological annotations, development of data structures and algorithms for extracting such ontological structures automatically from images, and testing the viability of our new meaning-based model of vision for explaining aspects of human vision. The University of Toronto, typically ranked as one of the world’s top 20 research universities, is located in downtown Toronto. The city is one of the most livable and cosmopolitan cities in the world, and has a vibrant academic and information technology community. This full-time position includes benefits and is fully funded for two years, with an initial appointment of one year. A postdoctoral position is available for working in an NIH BRAIN initiative funded project on the role of the basal ganglia in motor decision making in behaving mice. The project aims to elucidate how subcortical structures feed back onto and influence cortical processing. *Two Postdoctoral Fellows in Computational modeling and Precision Medicine applied to Parkinson’s Disease* We are looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral fellows, for joining the Neuroinformatics for Personalized Medicine lab (NeuroPM) at the Montreal Neurological Institute (McGill University, Montreal, Canada). The postdoctoral fellows will be under the supervision of Professor Yasser Iturria-Medina, and will be expected to collaborate with associated groups (e.g. Integrative Neuroscience Centre, Madrid, Spain). The projects, for 1.5 years and potentially extendable for another year, includes the analysis of multiple imaging modalities and therapeutic interventions in Parkinson’s disease, as well as the application of state-of-the-art brain computational models. A revised electromagnetic theory of the brain

Dear Colleagues, A common dogma of neuroscience is that all electrical events occurring in the brain are well described by an electrostatic theory. However, adopting a geometric attitude it becomes immediately clear that the propagation of an action potential induced a non-conservative electric field within nearby spines, and thus an electromagnetic description of the function of a brain is unavoidable. I would like to present to you with a revised and simplified version of the theory I advanced last year, entitled "Dynamic Aspects of Finite Architectures". Each year, every AFOSR portfolio can nominate one YIP recipient. Especially since the Cognitive & Computational Neuroscience portfolio is new this year, I wanted to make the neuroscience community aware of this opportunity (and also of the new portfolio). Dear all, INCF is calling for community proposals for Special Interest Group (SIG) and Working Group (WG) meetings to be held in Warsaw on 31 August 2019, the day before the INCF Assembly. The call is open both to new and existing INCF SIGs/WGs. *Deadline is June 1st.* INCF is working to make neuroscience more FAIR (Findable, Accessible, interoperable, Reusable), by promoting the creation and uptake of standards and best practices in neuroscience, as applied to tools and infrastructure, and by running a community endorsement process for new and existing standards and best practices. SIGs have an important role in this process, as community-initiated groups where users and developers can meet to align interests, set up working groups and work collaboratively to develop, refine, and implement new community standards and best practices to be proposed for endorsement. The SIGs also serve as the focus for getting agreement and community buy-in on the use of these standards and best practices. Workshop in Copenhagen, May 23rd-25th 2019

The purpose of the workshop is to gather leading neuroscientists to discuss how a fundamental brain theory could be formulated. Staff scientist position in the Section on Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety, NIMH/NIH

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Section on Neurobiology of Fear & Anxiety. This section examines neural systems models of emotion/cognition interactions. This is done in two ways: one that focuses on anxiety in health and disease, and the other that uses a developmental perspective using large datasets. Four types of data are exploited, clinical/behavioral assessment, psychophysiology, fMRI (particularly 7T high-resolution scanner) and MEG. The candidate must have a doctoral degree (PhD) in computational neuroscience, or computer science/engineering and at least 5 years of experience post Ph.D. analyzing large datasets, modeling complex neural systems, using advanced machine learning algorithms. Experience with technical computing in MATLAB, R, C++ and a strong mathematical skill set is required. Knowledge of multi threaded and paralell computing environments is desirable. An interest in neuroscience or prior experience in neuroscience related fields is a plus. The staff scientist is expected to be a key member of the Section on Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety, contributing to analytical methodology, design of new projects. IIT collaborates with University of Bologna and finances the positions at the PhD course in Data Science and Computation. Although formally enrolled at the University of Bologna, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct research either at the IIT center in Rovereto (Italy), or at the IIT headquarters in Genova, (Italy). The PhD project can focus on any of the research topics about neural information processing that are of interest to both the candidate and my lab, including: developing mathematical analysis methods and neural network models for studying large scale neural population coding during cognitive tasks, for studying the neural bases of sensory perception and decision making, for linking functional to anatomical connectivity with cellular resolution at the neural population level, and for determining the best theoretical framework to combine recording of neural activity (calcium imaging, electrophysiology, EEG) and intervention on it (optogenetics, TMS). Postdoctoral fellowship: Computational modeling of reading Right now you are reading. It does not cost you much effort because it is a highly automated process, but you are simultaneously decoding letters, moving visual attention, programming eye movements, recognizing words, stringing them together in a coherent syntactic and semantic representation, and adducing the intentions of the writer. We understand these individual processes in reading, but not how our brain can perform them simultaneously at the phenomenal speed of about 200 ms per word. Recently, a group of researchers in Marseille and Amsterdam has collaborated on the ambitious goal to create one computational model that describes all processes involved in reading, from the single letter up to understanding a sentence. Within this collaboration, there is an opening for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to work on computational modelling. The candidate will work on extending the already published OB-1 model (Psychological Review<https://research.vu.nl/en/publications/ob1-reader-a-model-of-word-recogniti…>, 2018). While the exact direction taken may depend on the interests of the candidate, this will include improving word recognition processes and accounting for EEG responses recorded during reading. Practicalities The postdoc will work in Amsterdam in the group of Martijn Meeter, but also be expected to regularly visit the Marseille group of Jonathan Grainger. The two-year position is potentially renewable for a third year. Official employer will be Université Aix-Marseille, including a one-year trial period. A postdoc salary in France is about €2606 a month; travel costs will be covered. Starting date is preferably 1 September 2019, but other dates can be discussed. US Air Force Young Investigator Research Program (YIP)

The Air Force's annual Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) is an excellent way for new principal investigators in the US to accelerate their careers in basic research with three years of funding at up to $150,000 per year. Each year, every AFOSR portfolio can nominate one YIP awardee. Especially since the Cognitive & Computational Neuroscience portfolio is new this year, I wanted to make the neuroscience community aware of this opportunity (and also of the new portfolio). Unlike most of AFOSR's research grants that are open to researchers worldwide, YIP awards are limited to US persons (citizens, nationals, or permanent residents) with full-time, permanent positions at US institutions who received their doctorates no later than April 1, 2012. The application deadline for Fiscal Year 2020 awards is June 3, 2019. Program Description: The Air Force YIP supports scientists and engineers who have received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees within the last seven years and show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. Project Description: The candidate will lead a multi-disciplinary dry-lab project in multi-omics and cellular neuroscience. Postdoc in large-scale brain modeling and machine learning

Summary The Theoretical Neuroscience Group (Head: Viktor Jirsa) is seeking to fill a post-doctoral position in the context of the project Virtual Brain Cloud to work on development of parameter inference workflows for connectome-based large-scale brain network models (see The Virtual Brain http://www.thevirtualbrain.org) applied to brain imaging data (EEG, MEG, fMRI). In particular, the project will involve the application and evaluation of common Bayesian estimation techniques such as Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo and variational schemes to high-dimensional time-series models of brain activity. These were previously successfully applied in the context of estimation of brain excitability based on personalized brain models and intracerebral electrophysiological recordings of seizure propagation in epileptic patients. The successful candidate will join a team working towards generalizing these approaches for other paradigms such as stimulation or resting state. Qualification Candidates should be have strong background in data fitting (Bayesian inference approaches, Dynamical Causal Modeling (DCM), Monte Carlo techniques). Experience with computational neuroscience (networks, dynamic system theory) and ability to program in a numerically oriented language (R, Python, MATLAB) are valued. The Theoretical Neuroscience Group We are a multi-national team interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying the spatiotemporal organization of large-scale brain networks. Postdoctoral position in multivariate connectivity and computational modeling in fMRI

Second Call. Wanted: Post-doctoral fellow interested in delving into new computational techniques for fMRI analysis. This position is ideal for students with a background in neuroimaging who want to strengthen their technical skills in preparation for a job market that increasingly values advanced analysis methods, or for students with a background in machine learning who want to branch into neuroscience. This Simons Foundation-funded research project will be focused on developing, evaluating, and deploying state-of-the-art multivariate connectivity techniques and other modeling approaches. The initial application will be to a large Autism dataset, and may grow from there depending on progress. These positions are part of the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant “Information Sampling in Multiattribute Choice” (INFOSAMPLE) awarded to Konstantinos Tsetsos. This project will utilise tools from sensory neuroscience in order to characterise how humans distribute their attention across time during multiattribute decisions. Using this approach we aspire to understand why humans reverse their preferences irrationally, when irrelevant alternatives are added to the choice-set. The postdoctoral researchers will be involved in designing and conducting psychophysical experiments using MEG and pharmacology, in analysing MEG data, and in working with computational models of attention & decision-making. A sufficiently strong quantitative background is required for both positions. Experience with ICA, source reconstruction, frequency tagging (SSVEP) and decoding techniques is desirable. Lack of exposure to these techniques can be compensated with experience in attention/ visual search or decision-making research. If these cues are not appropriately reciprocated, however, the interaction can be negatively impacted. Moreover, inappropriate reciprocation, or lack thereof, may be the result of misperception and or non-timely reactions. Failure to adequately account for biologically plausible perceptual and temporal facets of interactions may detract from the quality of human-robot interaction and hinder progress in the field of social robotics more generally. Incorporation of naturalistic and adaptive forms of sensorimotor and affective human-robot non-verbal communication is challenging because such interaction is highly dependent on the context and the relationship between the observer and the expresser. Biological species based interaction often requires explicit forms of social signalling such as nodding, nonverbal gestures, emotional expressions, etc., the interpretation of all of which may be highly context-sensitive. Furthermore, naturalistic social signalling may involve a certain degree of mimicry of autonomic responses such as pupil dilation, blinking, blushing, etc. which, in human-robot interaction requires the implementation of time-sensitive perceptual mechanisms currently underused in both commercial and research robotics platforms. In this workshop, we will investigate and discuss to what extent the aforementioned naturalistic social signalling capabilities needs to be accounted for in human-robot interaction and what modalities are more relevant, and in what contexts. The workshop will focus strongly on research motivated by naturalistic empirical data. We hope to provide a discussion friendly environment to connect with research covering complementary interests in the areas of robotics, computer science, psychology, neuroscience, affective computing and animal learning research. You will be member of Big Question 1 (BQ1), a larger endeavour to develop computational models of the mental lexicon from linguistic, psychological and neuroscience perspectives. You will also facilitate collaborative projects in BQ1 that combine the scientific expertise across different work packages. Interviews will be held at the University of Exeter Streatham Campus during the week of 10 June 2019.* Neurons and endocrine cells generate pulses of electrical activity. The patterns of electrical activity vary from cell-to-cell, and characteristics of these patterns (pulse duration, amplitude, timing) are critical to the function performed by the cell. For instance, electric pulse duration and frequency determines the quantity of hormone released by endocrine cells. Electrical currents are produced by ion channels, which act as non-linear electric conductances. The interactions between these non-linear conductances generate the complex patterns of electrical activity. Thus, the exact activity pattern of a given cell depends in a complex way on the exact distribution, or combination of weightings, of the different ion channels. To understand how different combinations of ion channel weightings result in a given pattern of electrical activity, we use mathematical models based on nonlinear differential equations that describe how the conductances vary with the cell electric potential and how they in turn change this potential. The problem with these models is that a lot of parameters are unknown, including the weightings of each channel. Electrophysiologists can record the electrical activity patterns from individual cells, but they cannot measure all the channel weightings from one cell. The objective of this funded PhD project is to extract information about the weightings from the measured electrical activity. The successful candidate will generate a database of channel weighting combinations and compute the resulting electrical activity pattern associated with each combination. They will then apply machine learning and/or topological data analysis to this database. This will allow them to deduce the relationships between weightings across models that generate electrical activity patterns selected from a subset of the database. By identifying the relationships between channel weightings across a highly heterogeneous population we can pinpoint the rules that regulate electrical activity across heterogeneous populations of cells. These methods will then be applied to existing datasets of electrophysiological recordings from electrically active cells. This project provides a unique opportunity to develop experience in machine learning and to receive training in mathematical modelling of neurons. This work will be done in close collaboration with experimentalists using cutting-edge methods that incorporate modelling and electrical recordings together. The student will therefore be exposed to multidisciplinary teamwork. If they so desire, they will also have the opportunity to learn electrophysiology and generate their own dataset of experimental electrical recordings. Fully funded PhD positions in Frankfurt, Germany

Apologies for cross-posting: The laboratory of Dr. Martin Vinck at the Ernst Struengmann Institute for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society <http://www.esi-frankfurt.de/esi-frankfurt/>is seeking multiple candidates for computational neuroscience Ph.D. positions to be filled in Spring/Early Summer 2019. Positions are fully funded. These positions encompass following projects: 1) Theoretical and data-analytical approaches to population coding in the nervous system. These include: - Mathematical approaches to understand the relationship between rate and temporal coding. - Development of unsupervised machine learning techniques to study neuronal patterns in high-dimensional state-spaces, with an emphasis on temporal sequencies in neural activity. This work builds further on our recent Plos Computational Biology paper. <https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1006283> - Study of state-space trajectories on short time-scales. 2) Study of travelling wave patterns from electrode arrays. The goal here is to detect different kinds of spatio-temporal travelling wave patterns and understand how they relate to behavior and sensory stimulation. 3) The study of predictive coding using deep learning network models. These projects include: - Use of deep learning models for predictive coding models, and optimization of learning strategies in unsupervised learning models. - Predicting features of neural activity from these models. 4) Development of algorithms and open-source platform for efficient analysis of high-dimensional neural datasets on high-performance computing clusters and GPUs in Julia or Python. The focus is on the extraction of network correlation measures in high-dimensional spiking datasets, and the development of new tools to quantify Granger-causality and spike-field coherence. PhD students will work together with experimental neuroscientists in our laboratory and apply methods and models on experimental datasets from primate and rodent animal models. Experiments in the laboratory include multi-areal electrophysiology with sillicon probes together with optogenetics. It is also possible for PhD students to participate actively in these experiments. We are primarily looking for students with training in a quantitative discipline (physics, electrical or biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, etc.), or neuroscientists with additional quantitative training. Some experience with neuroscience, or a proven interest in neuroscience, is a pre, but not a must. The new Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group project aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. MSc in Computational and Systems Neuroscience – University of Leicester We are delighted to introduce a new one-year, full-time postgraduate degree covering theoretical and practical aspects of modern computational neuroscience, and their applications in areas of cellular, systems and cognitive neuroscience. Students will learn the basics of neuroscience and how to apply different approaches from artificial intelligence and machine learning into neuroscience data modelling and analysis. The MSc Project will provide substantial experience with the main steps of undertaking a neuroscience research project, including experimental design, data acquisition, analysis and result interpretation. The programme will take advantage of the expertise of Centre for Systems Neuroscience (CSN) staff, whose research bridges the experimental and theoretical worlds. Stanford Postdoctoral Fellowship: Computational Modeling of Brain Networks

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF BRAIN NETWORKS   Currently Available: The Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in computational modeling of human brain imaging data using deep neural networks. The successful candidate will be involved in a multidisciplinary project that seeks to develop novel computational frameworks for robust identification of neurobiological signatures of psychiatric and neurological disorders combining deep learning and convolution networks and dynamic brain circuit analyses with task and resting-state fMRI. Clinical disorders currently under investigation include autism, ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, learning disabilities, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease. We seek talented and highly-motivated individuals with a strong background in at least one of these areas: deep learning algorithms and optimization (theory and practical implementations); computational modeling, statistical inference, and machine learning, especially as applied to fMRI and MRI data. Reminder - Course announcement : CAMP@Bangalore 2019

We would like to announce CAMP@Bangalore 2019 from 27 June 2019 to 12 July 2019. CAMP (Computational Approaches to Memory and Plasticity at NCBS, Bangalore) is a 16-day summer school on the theory and simulation of learning, memory and plasticity in the brain. The course consists of four modules covering sub-cellular electrical models, micro-circuits and network models, detailed models with electrical and chemical components, and systems level models, all with an emphasis on learning, memory and plasticity. The flavor of this edition of CAMP will be Synaptic Plasticity. Students worldwide are encouraged to apply. Accommodation and food will be free for the selected students. There is no registration fee. Students are advised to obtain independent travel grants. Application deadline : 6 April, 2019. Awesome-computational-neuroscience a list of researchers at graduate institutions

To all researchers, I’ve started a list of computational and theoretical neuroscience programs, including a list of researchers at each institution and a link for easy access to their research. It is in its very infancy and needs everyone’s help to flesh out schools in regions around the world. The list can be found here: https://github.com/eselkin/awesome-computational-neuroscience My motivation for starting the list was to find institutions with researchers who had interests even tangentially related to my own. Searching through publications only yielded limited matches and institution pages are generally outdated or not complete. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be any centralized list that gives an overview of what institutions value computational or theoretical neuroscience. I wanted to change that. GitHub is a very stable and functional way to change this. Similar to a wiki, everyone has the opportunity to participate on an open repository. Additionally most labs have someone who is familiar with git if not GitHub in particular. The list has a code of contribution with rules about formatting. This style guide allows the list to be consistent between institutions. Additional information about how to apply to the school is welcome. I have found that schools, even in the US, have very diverse admission criteria. If you are looking to attract students who are interested in your work, please add yourself and your institution.
