Continued funding will be available contingent on candidate making acceptable progress. PhD position: Machine learning to record and enhance sleep and lucid dreaming

Hi, Arenar B.V. and the Donders Institute offer a joint PhD position combining data science/AI and wearable EEG technology with sleep/dream research. In this project, the wearable sleep EEG headband iBand+ will be further developed and applied in several experimental studies. First, we will develop automatic sleep stage detection algorithms using machine learning strategies. We will then implement closed-loop acoustic stimulation procedures to enhance sleep slow oscillations to improve deep sleep. We will further develop combined acoustic and visual stimulation procedures which will allow to enhance self-awareness during sleep (i.e. lucid dreaming) and subsequent mood in the morning. The validity and efficacy of these procedures will be tested experimentally in large longitudinal studies in naturalistic home-based settings. The successful candidate will be centrally involved in the development, will lead different research projects within this general framework; will be closely involved in daily supervision of MSc students assisting the project; and will participate in the vibrant Donders Graduate School. There have been enormous strides in NLP and Machine Learning to develop architectures and techniques that effectively capture these effects. We have moved away from traditional bag-of-words approaches that ignore temporal ordering to RNNs, Temporal CNNs and Transformers that incorporate contextual information at varying timescales. While these architectures have lead to SoTA performance on many difficult language understanding tasks, it is unclear what representations these networks learn and how exactly they incorporate context. Interpreting these networks, systematically analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of different elements, such as gating or attention, and reflecting on the capacity of the networks across various timescales are open and important questions. On the biological side, recent work in neuroscience suggests that areas in the brain are organized into a temporal hierarchy in which different areas are not only sensitive to specific semantic information but also to the composition of information at different timescales. Computational neuroscience has moved in the direction of leveraging deep learning to gain insights about the brain. By answering questions on the underlying mechanisms and representational interpretability of these artificial networks, we can also expand our understanding of temporal hierarchies, memory and capacity effects in the brain. In this workshop we aim to bring together researchers from machine learning, NLP, and neuroscience to explore and discuss how computational models should effectively capture the multi-timescale, context-dependent effects that seem essential for processes such as language understanding. We believe that this will not only lead to a deeper understanding of biological language systems but also better artificial systems that can leverage these insights and understand language better. Open Source Brain workshop 2019: Call for presentations/demos of open datasets and tools

There are a number of presentation slots still available for attendees to present open experimental data sets/databases/tools/simulators/libraries relevant to the goals of the meeting. Models of cells and circuits in standardised formats can be visualised, analysed and simulated through a standard web browser. A key driver for the development of this technology is to improve accessibility, scientific scrutiny, reproducibility and reuse of models of brain function. The platform is described in a recent paper in Neuron: https://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(19)30444-1 The 2019 OSB Workshop will highlight the latest features of OSB and engage current and future users of the platform through invited talks, posters, hands on demonstrations, and user presentations. Since we are substantially expanding the functionality of Open Source Brain to enable sharing of standardized experimental data used to build and test the models of neurons and circuits, this year’s meeting will have two key themes: 1) Accessible sharing of cellular neuroscience data Through support for the Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) format, OSB will facilitate sharing of multiple types of experimental data used to constrain computational models, including electrophysiological recordings, Ca2+ fluorescence imaging, 2D, 3D and 4D imaging and behavioural data. Challenges, requirements and solutions to data standardization will be discussed. 2) Modelling cortical structures across scales Cortical networks are modelled at many scales from abstract representations of interacting populations (neural masses) to networks of biophysically and morphologically detailed cell models. NeuroML is being expanded to cover a greater range of these models, which will allow them to be shared and simulated on OSB, facilitating comparison of models and ideas between researchers. Postdoc and PhD student position using EEG & neural networks to investigate language (Potsdam, Germany)

Many thanks and best wishes, Milena Rabovsky --------------------------------------- Cognitive Neurosciences Lab at the University of Potsdam Postdoctoral and PhD student position The newly established Cognitive Neurosciences Lab at the University of Potsdam (PI Milena Rabovsky) is looking for a Postdoc to focus on neural network modeling of brain potentials during sentence comprehension and a PhD student to investigate prediction and adaptation during language comprehension using EEG. The positions are funded by an Emmy Noether grant from the German Research Foundation focused on investigating the processing of language and meaning in the brain using EEG and deep neural network models (see e.g., Rabovsky, Hansen, & McClelland, 2018, Nature Human Behaviour). Preferred starting date for both positions is November 1, 2019 (but can be discussed). Postdoc position The salary and benefits are determined by the collective bargaining agreement for public employees in Germany (TV-L 13 Ost, 100%). This is a temporary position initially limited to a term of 24 months (with possible extension). Project and responsibilities The goal of this project is to train a neural network model of sentence comprehension that has been successfully used to simulate language related brain potentials (Rabovsky, Hansen, & McClelland, 2018, Nature Human Behaviour) on a large-scale semantically labeled training corpus. Prospectively, the trained model will allow for (in collaborations with others in the lab) the simulation of language related brain potentials using stimulus materials from empirical experiments, and the comparison of representations in the model with representations in the brain via representational similarity analysis. Postdoc position in modeling in vivo dendritic activity of cortical pyramidal neurons

The Computational Neuroscience Unit (https://groups.oist.jp/cnu) of Prof. Erik De Schutter at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is starting a project on modeling behaviorally relevant dendritic activity in layer 5 cortical pyramidal neurons. This will be a collaboration with Prof. Wen-Biao Gan at the New York University School of Medicine (https://med.nyu.edu/faculty/wenbiao-gan) who will provide in vivo data to constrain the models. The goal is to build quantitative models that capture how synaptic input drives dendritic calcium spiking in the apical tuft, how this activity is transmitted down the apical dendrite and changes somatic output as demonstrated, for example, in Cichon and Gan, Nature 2015. Candidates should have a PhD in (computational) neuroscience with good knowledge of dendritic physiology and experience in using the NEURON software to simulate compartmental models of neurons. Previous experience in modeling pyramidal neurons is a plus but not required. Opening for Group Leader of Bio Data Science group

Dear Colleagues, Starting from Fall 2019, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland will host a 4-year interdisciplinary project Bio-Inspired Artificial Neural Networks The broad aim of the project is to put together Neuroscience and Machine Learning research and gather insight from the brain analyzed over a wide range of scales in order to develop novel machine learning architectures and algorithms. The project comprises Machine Learning, Cognitive and Physics groups and in addition three new groups will be formed: a low level neuroscience group, a Bio Data Science group and a more technical computer science group. We are looking in particular for candidates for a Group Leader of the Bio Data Science group. The main aims of the Bio Data Science group located at the Faculty of Physics is to perform extensive analyses of massive fMRI data (both in-house and publicly available), possibly also of other modalities like diffusive MRI or MEG/EEG. These analyses will be targeted at i) developing machine learning based diagnostic algorithms, ii) extracting insights from data on connectivity/dynamical properties of neuronal networks, iii) comparisons with artificial neural networks. In addition, the group is expected to closely cooperate with the Physics group of the project on testing physics motivated hypothesis and implementing machine learning architectures. Of course, the group is very much welcome to pursue also other goals related to the project "Bio-Inspired Artificial Neural Networks". Cone photoreceptors are the fundamental retinal neurons underlying our daylight vision. In spite of their importance for our visual perception, a comprehensive biophysical model showing how cones convert light into an electrical signal has not yet been developed. In close partnership with our experimental collaborators from UCLA, the student will analyze new (and worldwide unique) electrophysiological recordings to develop the first molecular model for the light response in cones. He will use asymptotic analysis and simulations to obtain a precise understanding of how cones respond and adapt during daylight. He will perform simulations with molecularly modified models to study how sensory transduction is altered in a diseased photoreceptor, which is important for understanding and treatment of photoreceptor dysfunctions. Our main focus is on natural movements such as running on uneven surface, climbing and jumping that require continuous modulation of behavioral programs. The successful applicant will be combining our novel, high-resolution 3D motion capture system with deep-brain imaging (Inscopix nVoke system) and optical/pharmacological manipulation to disentangle the circuitry mechanisms underlying fine motor control. We are seeking a talented scientist to use modern computational modeling and data analysis methods to understand the roles of specific inhibitory and excitatory cell types found in hippocampal microcircuits in controlling spatial learning and memory. In particular, we are interested in nonlinear signal integration and associative synaptic plasticity mechanisms in the dendrites of granule cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, and their regulation by a unique class of excitatory interneurons implicated in epilepsy, the dentate mossy cells. Our lab, the Section on Affective Neuroscience and Pain (ANP Lab), is recruiting one to two postdoctoral researchers with expertise in computational modeling, fMRI, and/or affective science to lead new projects on the psychological modulation of pain and emotional experience using high field imaging (7-Tesla MRI). Our lab is part of NIH's intramural research program, and is affiliated with the intramural programs of NCCIH, NIMH, and NIDA. We are particularly interested in the intersection of appetitive and aversive learning, how psychosocial factors influence pain and clinical outcomes, and questions motivated by pain’s central role in the opioid crisis. ABOUT THIS RESEARCH TOPIC Pervasive and elusive human variability, both across and within individuals, poses a major challenge in interpreting and decoding human brain activity. Differences in brain anatomy and functionality across individuals contribute to the inter-subject variability. Within an individual, changes in neural processing, non-stationarity of brain activities, the variation of neurophysiological mechanisms, and various unknown factors might give rise to the intra-subject variability. Recently, there has been an increasing number of studies that have focused on appreciating rather than ignoring variability. Through the lens of variability, they have led to a better insight into individual differences and cross-session variations, facilitating precision functional brain mapping and decoding based on individual variability and similarity. For instance, the robustness of brain decoding has been improved by transfer learning techniques that are capable of tackling variability in data collected from different subjects across different sessions and days. On the other hand, the applicability of a neurophysiological biometric relies on its manifest inter-subject variability and minimal intra-subject variability. Critical questions, therefore, arise regarding how inter- and intra-subject variability can be observed, analyzed and modeled, what pros and cons researchers might gain from the variability, and how to deal with the variability in brain imaging and decoding. The goal of this Research Topic is to encourage researchers to examine human variability in brain imaging and decoding, with a focus on both advantages and disadvantages of inter- and intra-subject variability in mapping and modeling brain functions. We welcome empirical, theoretical and meta-analytical work and encourage authors to re-examine their datasets through the scopes of human variability rather than averaged observations and overall interpretations. We have a rare opportunity for a Research Associate to work on this problem within the Dept of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield (a world top 100 university) and in collaboration with world-leading neuroscientists in Australia through the prestigious £1.2m EPSRC Centre to Centre project (ActiveAI: active learning and selective attention for rapid, robust and efficient AI). Your primary role will be to develop a new class of ActiveAI controllers for problems in which insects excel but deep learning methods struggle. These problems have one or more of the following characteristics: (i) learning must occur rapidly, (ii) learning samples are few or costly, (iii) computational resources are limited, and (iv) the learning problem changes over time. Insects deal with such complex tasks robustly despite limited computational power because learning is an active process emerging from the interaction of evolved brains, bodies and behaviours. Through a virtuous cycle of modelling and experiments, you will develop insect-inspired models, in which behavioural strategies and specialised sensors actively structure sensory input while selective attention drives learning to the most salient information, massively reducing the search space. In this way, we will both advance neuroscience and enable ActiveAI solutions which are efficient in learning and final network configuration, robust to real-world conditions and learn rapidly. You will work under the supervision of Dr Mike Mangan, and Professors Eleni Vasilaki and James Marshall, within the Department of Computer Science (top five in the UK in the most recent REF) in partnership with UK-based research collaborators in the £4.8m EPSRC Brains on Board Programme Grant. Bristol workshop 9-13 September 2019 - The Neuroscience Data Challenge

The Neuroscience Data Challenge is a collaborative workshop which will bring people together to apply modelling and data approaches to neuroscience. It will be a workshop and hackathon designed to give us the opportunity to work as colleagues to solve problems. The Neuroscience Data Challenge will be held in Bristol from 9-13 September 2019. All are welcome, there is no fee and there are some bursaries for students and postdocs. The format is based on the "study week" that is successful and popular in applied mathematics - there will be four neuroscience problems presented at the start of the week and we will self-organize around working on them together in groups. The NYU ECoG group has an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to a project aimed at unravelling laminar cortical computations and validating laminar resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans. Laminar fMRI is becoming increasingly popular as it enables the study of feedback and feedforward flow of information in the living human brain (e.g., Muckli, Current Biology 2015). Yet, the neurovascular and physiological computations underlying laminar signals are not well understood. Our group is part of an exciting international collaboration that aims to rigorously validate laminar fMRI against laminar electrophysiology and develop a proper neurovascular coupling model. The postdoctoral fellow would contribute to this team effort involving researchers at NYU Langone Health, the Center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Minessotta (Essa Yacoub), and Maastrich University (Elia Formisano, Federico de Martino, Kamil Uludag). The project is funded by a BRAIN initiative RO1 grant. The role of the postdoc is to perform laminar electrophysiology in human subjects with epilepsy and as well as to conduct laminar fMRI in the same patients. We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoc, with a strong background in human and/or animal electrophysiology and a desire to learn high-field MRI. No previous experience with MRI is required. A strong background in signal processing, and strong quantitative skills (e.g., Matlab, C++, Python) are required. The initial post is for 1 year with the opportunity to renew for up to 4 years. Postdoctoral researchers will be given the opportunity to participate in other lab research endeavors, and they are expected to make a strong contribution to the lab's overall research efforts. Two Postdoctoral Positions in Auditory Biophysics: Optics & Theory

We welcome applications for postdoctoral candidates with expertise in optics, instrument development, or theoretical modelling who want to apply their skills in the field of the biophysics of hearing. Two positions in Dr. Andrei Kozlov’s lab (www.kozlovlab.com<http://www.kozlovlab.com/>) in the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London are supported by a five-year Wellcome Trust Investigator Award: one experimental and one theoretical. We investigate mechano-electrical transduction by hair cells, the receptor cells of the inner ear. These cells can detect and amplify atomic-scale vibrations at thousands of cycles per second. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying this extreme sensitivity. To achieve our goal, we combine novel experimental and theoretical approaches. The experimental position will focus on developing new optical methods, including laser interferometry, and combining them with electrophysiology. Practical knowledge of optics or optomechanics is essential for this work. For more information about this kind of research, see Kozlov et al., Nature, 2011. The theoretical position focuses on modelling mechano-electrical transduction, combining analytical and numerical techniques, and is in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Risler at Institut Curie in Paris. The successful candidate for this role will have a strong background and track record in Theoretical Soft Matter, Statistical Physics or a related discipline. PhD Position in Data Science and Modeling in Neuroimaging at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf, Germany One PhD position is available in data science and computational modeling with a focus on the data-driven analysis of neuroimaging data in the lab of Prof. Dr. Simon Eickhoff at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf in Germany. The PhD candidate will work on projects aiming to study the effective connectivity of functional brain networks derived from task-based and resting-state fMRI data. In particular, applicability, reliability and limitations of the Dynamical Causal Modeling (DCM) approach will be investigated in various large samples of healthy subjects and patients and compared to other approaches. We are specifically looking for candidates with training in data science/computational neuroscience/applied mathematics/physics or related fields and skills in programming and big data analysis. PhD Position in Computational Neuroscience and Neuroimaging at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf, Germany One PhD position is available in computational neuroscience with a focus on mathematical modeling of brain dynamics based on neuroimaging data in the lab of Prof. Dr. Simon Eickhoff at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf in Germany. The PhD candidate will work on projects involving large-scale dynamical brain models derived from multimodal neuroimaging data (structural, functional & diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, MRI) combined with numerical simulations and analysis of model dynamics and parameter space. We are specifically looking for candidates with training in applied mathematics/computational neuroscience or related fields and experience in programming and numerical simulation of neuronal models/nonlinear dynamical systems. The candidate will be responsible for preparation of necessary neuroimaging data, derivation, validation and analytical and numerical investigation of the whole-brain dynamical models, and writing manuscripts for publication. The position provides an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment and training in mathematical modeling of neuroimaging data and methods for data analysis. Open Source Brain workshop 9-11 Sept 2019 & new publication

Models of cells and circuits in standardised formats can be visualised, analysed and simulated through a standard web browser. A key driver for the development of this technology is to improve accessibility, scientific scrutiny, reproducibility and reuse of models of brain function. The platform is described in a recent paper in Neuron: https://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(19)30444-1 The 2019 OSB Workshop will highlight the latest features of OSB and engage current and future users of the platform through invited talks, posters, hands on demonstrations, and user presentations. Since we are substantially expanding the functionality of Open Source Brain to enable sharing of standardized experimental data used to build and test the models of neurons and circuits, this year’s meeting will have two key themes: 1) Accessible sharing of cellular neuroscience data Through support for the Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) format, OSB will facilitate sharing of multiple types of experimental data used to constrain computational models, including electrophysiological recordings, Ca2+ fluorescence imaging, 2D, 3D and 4D imaging and behavioural data. Challenges, requirements and solutions to data standardization will be discussed. 2) Modelling cortical structures across scales Cortical networks are modelled at many scales from abstract representations of interacting populations (neural masses) to networks of biophysically and morphologically detailed cell models. NeuroML is being expanded to cover a greater range of these models, which will allow them to be shared and simulated on OSB, facilitating comparison of models and ideas between researchers. *Postdoctoral Position opening at the University of Pittsburgh in neuroimaging of mood disorders* Candidates are being considered for a post-doctoral associate position in the Anticipation, Cognition and Emotion lab ( www.ace.pitt.edu ) at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.pitt.edu) to work with Dr. Anna Manelis and her team. A successful candidate will work on the NIMH funded research project that uses multimodal neuroimaging (fMRI, MRI, DTI and fNIRS) to understand the contribution of anticipatory processing to cognitive and emotional dysfunction in individuals with mood disorders. Pittsburgh is a vibrant community which promotes diversity and collaboration within its university and medical systems. Our lab works in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to perform neuroimaging studies which will help us to better understand mood disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorders. *Required Qualification*s: we are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree (or anticipated PhD degree) in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience or a related discipline. A strong research background in the analysis and interpretation of neuroimaging data is required. A successful candidate will have excellent writing and communication skills. Candidates with a strong computational background are encouraged to apply. Experience with FSL, Freesurfer and E-prime is preferred. The ability to program in Shell, Matlab, Python and/or R is preferred. Experience with fNIRS, graph modeling and pattern classification analyses is a plus. Paper: Forward propagation closed loop learning

Dear all, we have a new paper out where we have propagated errors forwards (and not backwards): "For an autonomous agent, the inputs are the sensory data that inform the agent of the state of the world, and the outputs are their actions, which act on the world and consequently produce new sensory inputs. The agent only knows of its own actions via their effect on future inputs; therefore desired states, and error signals, are most naturally defined in terms of the inputs. Most machine learning algorithms, however, operate in terms of desired outputs. For example, backpropagation takes target output values and propagates the corresponding error backwards through the network in order to change the weights. In closed loop settings, it is far more obvious how to define desired sensory inputs than desired actions, however. To train a deep network using errors defined in the input space would call for an algorithm that can propagate those errors forwards through the network, from input layer to output layer, in much the same way that activations are propagated. In this article, we present a novel learning algorithm which performs such ‘forward-propagation’ of errors. The aim is to introduce young scientists to experimental and computational techniques used in neuroscience research. The summer school will be a three-day course made up of a series of seminars and lab visits where successful candidates will get first hand experience of electrophysiological recordings (both in vitro and in vivo), EEG recordings, brain imaging, optogenetics, data analysis workshops and practical classes on learning to code in Python. No prior experience is necessary, but a keen interest is essential! Call for contributions ----------------------------- Workshop on "Role of movement-based active perception in navigation and its neurorobotic correlates" at SWARM 2019: The 3rd International Symposium on Swarm Behavior and Bio-Inspired Robotics, Okinawa, Japan Date: November 22, 2019 Location: Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Onna-son, Okinawa, Japan Workshop url: https://arilab.unit.oist.jp/swarm2019/#ws Workshop overview ---------------------------- Active perception in animals involves executing behaviours that move sensory appendages (e.g. eyes, pinnae, antennae or whiskers) in space to increase flow of sensory stimuli as well as the sampled information content. This increased sampling can significantly improve the animal's understanding of its environment. In this context, perception (interpretation of sensory stimuli) and action (behaviours that move the sensory appendages) are tightly coupled. Several biological studies have identified the important role of movement-based active sensing for increasing sensory volumes and many robotic studies have investigated the principles underlying active perception in adaptive behaviour. Insects and rodents are very promising model organisms to study active perception, as they possess highly mobile sensory appendages, a wide variety of sensilla and a well-studied nervous system. The neurorobotic approach, i.e. developing robotic models of biological neural mechanisms, is well-suited for hypothesis-testing as it allows one to isolate and embed the neural mechanism of interest within an artificial body that can sense and act in the real world. This relieves scientists from the task of modelling the statistics of sensory stimuli, as the real world provides these statistics for free. This full day workshop brings together leading experts, from both biology and neurorobotics perspectives, to shed light on the principles underlying active antennal perception as well as its neural correlates and discuss the neurorobotic approach to modelling active perception. Learning outcomes: - Understanding the basic concepts and principles of active perception - Knowledge of neural correlates of active perception - Knowledge of embodied AI and the neurorobotic approach - Applying these concepts and knowledge in developing agents/robots that utilise actively moving antennae to execute navigation behaviours such as taxis The full-day workshop consists of: - Theory (lectures): Invited talks by experts from biology and neurorobotics, - Practice tutorial: Hypothesis-testing via neurorobots in simulated and/or real-world navigation tasks, - Discussion and future directions Submission guidelines ------------------------------ Contributions in the form of 1 page conf. style abstract on active perception. *Job Title: * *Postdoctoral Associate in Neural Circuits of Learning and Memory* NIH-funded postdoctoral positions are immediately available to study neural circuit mechanisms of learning and memory and their involvements in neurological disorders. The goal of this project is to use state-of-the-art machine learning to understand human brain aging. In particular, the project will study healthy subjects 90 years or older. Fundación CIEN is home to a multidisciplinary community of scientists in neuroscience, with special focus on aging, both healthy and pathological. BRAIN Theories postdocs to develop history dependent theories across scales.

Two Postdoctoral positions to develop a framework to study history dependent activity across scales and species. The objective of this NIH BRAIN Theories project is to develop a unified theoretical framework to study history dependence across the nervous system. This is based on our previous work on using fractional order differential equations to study reaction diffusion and spiking dynamics in single neurons. In this project, we will further extend our theory to determine variability in cortical neurons, understand the effect of history dependence on network dynamics, coding, and information rates; and will apply our knowledge at the cellular level to predict and understand sensory processing in intact animals. This is an expansive project, with multiple collaborations. The fitting candidates will have the opportunity to interact with laboratories at McGill University, in Canada; Max Planck Institute for Dynamics & Self Organization, in Germany; and the Allen Brain Institute. Your theoretical background could be in dynamical systems, applied math, or computational neuroscience. Having knowledge of fractional order differential equations is a plus, but not required. Technically, you need to know Matlab. Knowledge of python and NEURON are a plus. You have to have a fundamental knowledge of neuroscience or demonstrate a willingness to catch up. The laboratory has all the necessary resources, from high end CPU/GPU servers, to local clusters, and access to the largest supercomputers and cloud services through the Texas Advanced Computer Center and the Chameleon Cloud. The laboratory also offers an interdisciplinary environment where experiments in cerebellar research are combined with computational and theoretical approaches. We just acquired a new multi-photon microscope with spatial light modulation capabilities that will allow us to interrogate the cerebellum in ways not possible before. San Antonio is one of the best places to live in the US. It is one of the most affordable large cities in the country, the weather is mild for most of the year, and you can afford to have a nice life. Official PGENESIS 2.4 release and GENESIS 2.4 Update

I would like to announce the Official Release of PGENESIS 2.4 along with a significant update to GENESIS 2.4. GENESIS is implemented with an object-oriented design that groups related object and command definitions into separately compiled libraries. Parallel GENESIS (PGENESIS) adds a library with a "postmaster" object to the usual usual GENESIS objects and commands. This allows a GENESIS simulation (e. g. a large network model) to be split into many MPI processes that communicate through the postmaster. The November 2014 release of GENESIS 2.4 was intended to be the last packaged GENESIS 2 distribution for download from the GENESIS web site (http://genesis-sim.org/GENESIS) As GENESIS is user-supported, rather than centrally developed, updates to GENESIS and PGENESIS are now obtained from the Repository for Continued Development of the GENESIS 2.4 Neural Simulator (https://github.com/genesis-sim/genesis-2.4) The object-oriented design and organization not only fosters the community development of neural models, but of the simulator itself. This new mutually-developed release of PGENESIS is such an example. As users have continued to contribute new libraries and improvements, there has been an increased use and extension of GENESIS and PGENESIS for its original purpose of realistically modeling cortical networks of multicompartmental neurons on parallel computers. Recent updates to GENESIS and a merge of the GENESIS/PGENESIS development branch from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have addressed a number of issues in order to increase its scalability for modeling very large networks on high performance computing resources, allowing for models of millions of neurons. These improvements have made it necessary for a new release of a combined package of the May 2019 GENESIS 2.4 Update and the PGENESIS 2.4 Official Release. Information about this release and downloads are available from the GENESIS web site (http://genesis-sim.org/GENESIS) The official release of PGENESIS 2.4 is much improved from the December 2014 preliminary release. Updates of GENESIS since the 2014 release allow the fast "hsolve" solver to be used with new synaptic plasticity models and measurements of cortical field potentials. The efficient delivery of spike events when hsolve is used with large network models results in increases in simulation speed by factors of 10 to 20. This release of PGENESIS 2.4 is also now available for running large-scale network simulations on supercomputers at the Neuroscience Gateway Portal (NSG). Research Fellow Position in Seizure Prediction

We have a Research Fellow opening through a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Monash University for someone to develop and crowdsource machine learning and data science approaches to solving seizure prediction. Seizure prediction will enable the generation of warnings so a person with epilepsy can move to safety, or activation of electrical stimulation or drug delivery to prevent seizures. Our team leverages unique long-term human brain activity data to find novel, clinically relevant solutions to seizure prediction, and publishes these findings in the highest impact neurology journals (Lancet Neurology, Nature Reviews Neurology, Nature Neuroscience, Brain, PNAS). The appointed research fellow is expected to successfully contribute to and drive innovative research activities to help make seizure prediction a viable option to support patients with epilepsy. The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification complemented with experience in machine learning, data science, signal processing, dynamical systems theory, time series analysis and/or cloud computing. A postdoctoral researcher position studying human locomotion is available in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Ferris ( https://faculty.eng.ufl.edu/human-neuromechanics-laboratory) This position is for an initial one-year appointment, and has the potential to be renewed for an additional three years based on performance and funding availability. Dr. Ferris has a long history of training professionals who have entered and succeeded in both academic and industry positions. The postdoctoral research will work on a currently funded NIH project (U01 AG061389) designed to identify neural correlates of mobility impairments in older adults. Research will involve using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) to track changes in electrocortical dynamics in older adults in a longitudinal study. Subjects will walk on a range of terrain surfaces to determine how they compensate for surfaces that challenge their stability. We will determine whether poorer walking performance is associated with the Compensation Related Utilization of Neural Circuits Hypothesis (CRUNCH). CRUNCH is a well-supported model of brain activity patterns that are seen when older individuals perform tasks of increasing complexity. CRUNCH describes the over-recruitment of frontoparietal brain networks that older adults exhibit in comparison to young adults, even at low levels of task complexity. CRUNCH also describes the limited reserve resources available in the older brain. These factors cause older adults to quickly reach a ceiling in brain resources when performing tasks of increasing complexity. *Attributes of UF and Gainesville*: The BME Department is housed in a state-of-the art building that is located in the medical school and steps from engineering. The University of Florida is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus. The positions will be based in Toulouse (France), with numerous opportunities to travel, in particular for visits to and close collaborations with the Serre lab at Brown University (USA). The successful candidates will become involved in a number of projects, depending on their particular interests, and will also have the opportunity to develop independent projects. Applicants for the PhD positions should hold a Masters degree or equivalent. Applicants for the post-doc positions should hold a PhD, or expect to receive their PhD shortly. Candidates must have a strong background in computer vision and/or computational neuroscience and/or machine learning. Excellent python programming skills and Tensorflow/PyTorch experience are required. Post-doctoral position in neural circuitry underlying sensory perception

We invite applications for two postdoctoral positions focusing on the application of causal optogenetic approaches to dissect the neural circuits underlying sensory perception. The applicants should have a strong background in neurophysiology, circuit neuroscience, or behavioral neuroscience and be highly independent with a strong propensity for interdisciplinary research. Previous experience with electrophysiological recordings, two-photon GCaMP imaging, optogenetics or behavioral analysis is desirable. Post-doc Position in Open-Ended Deep Reinforcement Learning

We study systems that effectively learn to control their bodies and their environment by defining their own learning goals, practicing the skills for achieving these goals and setting themselves progressively harder goals. Multiple postdoc positions uOttawa Theoretical neuroscience, nonlinear/statistical physics, cellular electrophysiology and imaging, computational neuroscience University of Ottawa Multiple theoretical, computational and experimental neuroscience postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Centre for Neural Dynamics of the University of Ottawa. Position 1: Theoretical neuroscience and nonlinear/statistical physics focusing on the dynamics of a population of core recurrent neurons within the hippocampus and their role in temporal and spatial memory. The candidate will be involved in collaborations between Profs. Len Maler, André Longtin and Jean-Claude Béïque. Position 2: Experimental and computational neuroscience focusing on dendritic integration. Expertise in cellular electrophysiology and/or computational neuroscience is an asset. The candidate will be involved in collaborations between Profs. Richard Naud and Jean-Claude Béïque. Position 3: Computational and experimental neuroscience focusing on dendritic integration and recurrent circuitry. Expertise in cellular electrophysiology and/or computational neuroscience is an asset. The candidate will be involved in collaborations between Profs. The researcher will join uOttawa’s Brain and Mind Research Institute’s Center for Neural Dynamics. uOttawa’s Neuroscience community is fast expanding, highly dynamic and offers a rich array of collaborative opportunities. Each position is for one year with automatic renewal for a second year following satisfactory progress, and a possible extension to a third year.
