Grandmother cells a failed concept? Or is Barlow right that grandmother cells exist and “can now be recorded from and studied reliably?"

Ann-Sophie Barwich recently published an article in Frontiers in Neuroscience titled “The Value of Failure in Science: The Story of Grandmother Cells in Neuroscience” (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2019.01121/full) where she argues for the need for failure analysis in science and, in the context of neuroscience, analyzed the grandmother cell concept as a failed one. Although I was one of the reviewers who endorsed the article for publication (publication of alternative viewpoints is essential in science), I felt that Barwich’s arguments against grandmother cells were deeply flawed. I point out these flaws in a Commentary in Frontiers in Neuroscience: “Commentary: The Value of Failure in Science: The Story of Grandmother Cells in Neuroscience:” https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2020.00059/full I think Reddy and Thorpe’s 2014 article clears the confusion about concept cells. With Reddy and Thorpe’s characterization of concept cells, one would find no difference between concept cells and grandmother cells. And that’s essentially what I have done in the Commentary – show that concept cells and grandmother cells have identical properties. I also point out in the Commentary that it’s a false claim by Barwich (and in other prior articles that Barwich references) that concept cells can be part of a sparse population coding scheme. Given that concept cells have “meaning” on a stand-alone basis, they can’t be part of any population coding scheme. And it’s also a false claim in Barwich that grandmother cells do not use associative learning, because grandmother cells have always been characterized as “multimodal” going all the way back to Gross (2002). In addition, the neurophysiological evidence on multisensory neurons clearly point to a single-cell based abstract cognitive system in the brain, as claimed by Roy (2017). The NIMH is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders and neuroscience, and part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). *** About the NIMH Machine Learning Team Our mission is to help NIMH scientists use machine learning methods to address a diverse set of research problems in clinical and cognitive psychology and neuroscience. These range from identifying biomarkers for aiding diagnoses to creating and testing models of mental processes in healthy subjects. We work with many different data types, including very large brain imaging datasets from various imaging modalities, behavioral data, and picture and text corpora. We have excellent computational resources, both of our own (tens of GPUs for deep learning) and shared within the NIH (a cluster with hundreds of thousands of CPUs, and hundreds of GPUs). As a machine learning research group, we develop new methods and publish in the main machine learning conferences (e.g. NeurIPS and ICLR), as well as in psychology and neuroscience journals. Many of our problems require devising research approaches that combine imaging and non-imaging data, and leveraging structured knowledge resources (databases, scientific literature, etc) to generate explanations and hypotheses. Additionally, candidates should be capable of visualizing and communicating findings to a broad scientific audience, as well as explaining the details of relevant methods to researchers in a variety of domains. Desirable experience that is not required, but will be considered very favorably: - neuroimaging data processing and analysis (any MRI modality, as well as MEG/EEG) - Bayesian statistical modelling - natural language processing / structured data such as EHR or questionnaires Finally, you should have demonstrable experience coding in languages currently used in data-intensive, scientific computing, such as Python, MATLAB or R. This is an ideal position for someone who wants to establish a research career in method development and applications driven by scientific and clinical needs. PhD Position in Computational Neuroscience, University of Edinburgh

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in Computational Neuroscience with Dr. Angus Chadwick at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, commencing September 2020 or later. Exceptional applicants interested in a September 2021 start may also apply. Students should hold, or be close to completion of, an undergraduate or masters degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or similar, and be interested in applying their analytical skills to tackle problems in neuroscience. Highly motivated students with other backgrounds may also be considered. The newly-formed Chadwick group focuses on the dynamics of neural populations underlying visual perception and spatial navigation. We use a combination of approaches, including 1) top-down modelling of neural circuit function guided by machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions 2) bottom-up analysis and simulation of neuronal network dynamics, and 3) statistical modelling of large-scale neural recordings. Our long-term goal is to develop a unified theory of the neural circuit computations supporting visual and spatial processing which spans these levels of analysis. We collaborate closely with a number of experimental neuroscience laboratories both in Edinburgh and further afield. Edinburgh is a vibrant and international city with a large student population, and has been voted as “best place to live in Britain”. The School of Informatics maintains an internationally-leading research environment in Computational Neuroscience, Machine Learning and Robotics, with close links to the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences and the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. International Brain Lab now hiring data scientists!

The International Brain Laboratory (https://www.internationalbrainlab.com/) is seeking 3 data scientists, who will play key roles in a large-scale international collaboration in brain research. The International Brain Lab combines the efforts of approximately 50 scientists in 20 laboratories toward understanding the brain-wide basis of a complex behavior. The project will involve recording the activity of millions of neurons in the working brain and building mathematical models of the resulting data. The data sets this project will produce are vast and complex, including physiological recordings, behavioural measurements, and video, all of which must be standardized into common formats, integrated into a single database, and subjected to quality control. NSF Neuronex Big Brain Imaging Workshop @ Boston University - April 15-16, 2020

We are proud to announce the 2020 Big Brain Imaging Workshop hosted jointly by the NSF NeuroNex Nemonic Hub as well as the Boston University Neurophotonics Center! This two-day workshop will take place on Wednesday, April 15th and continue on Thursday, April 16th, 2020 at the Boston University Photonics Center, 8 Saint Mary's Street, Room 906, Boston, MA 02215. The 2020 Big Brain Imaging Workshop is an opportunity to join in the discussion on optical approaches for cellular resolution imaging of neuronal populations that have been highly instrumental for uncovering the principles of neural circuit function. To date, the microscope technology development for imaging the nervous system has largely been focused on applications on a subset of model species with smaller, optically accessible brains (ex. c. elegans, zebrafish, mice). The ability to translate these technologies to species with brains that are both physically larger and less optically accessible remains a challenge. The topic of the workshop is focused on advancing cellular resolution brain imaging techniques in "larger" brains of mammalian species (ex. rats, cats, ferrets, marmosets, macaques). The goal is to bring neuroscientists and optical engineers together to discuss challenges and come up with potential solutions that will pave the way for the next generation of microscopes that can be applied to a greater number of model organisms. The Computational Neuroscience and Psychiatry Lab (www.pinotsislab.com) at University ofLondon—City is looking for a Post Doc with a strong background in video gamesand/or numerical analysis of ODEs/PDEs and/or computational neuroscience. The Lab focuses on developing new algorithms for the analysis of human and animal brain imaging data. These are based on computational models of neural dynamics and state of the art machine learning techniques. Particular emphasis is put on applications in Computational Psychiatry and developing models of brain pathology. Also, the Lab develops brain theories that can explain brain pathology, using theoretical tools from deepneural networks and Bayesian brain theories. The Post Doc shall conduct research in one or more of these areas. He/she will have the opportunity to shape the details of their project based on their specific interests. The successful candidate should have a PhD in applied mathematics, computational neuroscience, engineering or physics. Expertise in one or more modern scientific computing programming language (Python, Matlab or R) is essential. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to Loihi, Intel’s neuromorphic research chip [1], and will learn to run high-level applications on Loihi using Nengo! Human Neocortical Neurosolver

Greetings — We are happy to announce a methods on our new software Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN) for cell and circuit level interpretation of human electro- and magneto-encephalography (EEG/MEG) is now in press in eLife and will be highlighted in the next issue of eLife digest. https://elifesciences.org/articles/51214 Human Neocortical Neurolover (HNN), a new software tool for interpreting the cellular and network origin of human MEG/EEG data. Magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG/EEG) non-invasively record human brain activity with millisecond resolution providing reliable markers of healthy and disease states. Relating these macroscopic signals to underlying cellular- and circuit-level generators is a limitation that constrains using MEG/EEG to reveal novel principles of information processing or to translate findings into new therapies for neuropathology. To address this problem, we built Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN, https://hnn.brown.edu) software. HNN has a graphical user interface designed to help researchers and clinicians interpret the neural origins of MEG/EEG. HNN's core is a neocortical circuit model that accounts for biophysical origins of electrical currents generating MEG/EEG. Data can be directly compared to simulated signals and parameters easily manipulated to develop/test hypotheses on a signal's origin. Tutorials teach users to simulate commonly measured signals, including event related potentials and brain rhythms. HNN's ability to associate signals across scales makes it a unique tool for translational neuroscience research. Two PhD Positions at The University of Melbourne and Monash University, Australia

Creating subject-specific mathematical models to understand the brain The brain is a complex machine and brain function remains yet to be fully understood. This project works at the intersection of dynamical modelling, statistical signal processing, statistical inference and machine learning to develop subject specific mathematical models of the brain that can be used to infer brain states and monitor and image the brain. This work is centred around a neurophysiological variable estimation framework we have been developing that can be applied to all kinds of brain activity recordings. There are two projects to be completed under this program and we are looking for a different student for each of these projects. Project 1: specifically extend our neurophysiological variable estimation framework to different classes of neural population models validated from microscopic data. Project 2: specifically extend our neurophysiological estimation framework to coupled networks of neural population models applied to in vivo human recordings. These projects are critical for applications of our estimation framework to all kinds of neuroscientific studies (e.g. of rest, sensation, cognition, movement or abnormal behaviour) where different models and networks are more appropriate and parsimonious for different kinds of situations and will open new ways to understanding brain function. Did you encounter any problems? Were you successful? We are curious to hear your story. This is the reason why we are editing a special issue of ReScience to collect these stories. The ten years reproducibility challenge is an invitation for researchers to try to run the code they've created for a scientific publication that was published more than ten years ago. This code can be anything (statistical analysis, numerical simulation, data processing, etc.), can be written in any language and can address any scientific domain. The only mandatory condition to enter the challenge is to have published a scientific article before 2010, in a journal or a conference with proceedings, which contains results produced by code, irrespectively of whether this code was published in some form at the time or not. Note that we do not ask you to write a new version of your old code. We ask you instead to try to make your old code to run on modern hardware/software (with minimal modifications) in order to check if you can obtain the exact same results that were publised at least ten years ago. The position will focus on the application of state of the art analysis-methods from cognitive neuroscience (e.g., neural oscillatory analyses, SSVEP, MVPA, connectivity analyses) to infant EEG data, to understand the development of the visual system in the first year of life. The scope of the project is within the cognitive developmental neuroscience, a highly dynamic, multidisciplinary, and rapidly growing field. The position is part of a DFG-funded project led by Dr. Moritz Köster at the Freie Universität Berlin, in collaboration with Prof. Stefanie Höhl (Vienna University) and Dr. Radoslaw Martin Cichy (Freie Universität Berlin). The post holder will be affiliated with the “Neural Dynamics of Visual Cognition” group at the Freie Universität Berlin. This is an exciting opportunity to participate as a theoretician in a synergistic loop with John White's experimental group at Boston University on gamma oscillations in excitatory and inhibitory neural networks. The focus of the Group’s work is computational models of large-scale brain activity, with particular emphases on neural dynamics as measured by M/EEG and fMRI, oscillations, brain stimulation (TMS, TDCS), neural plasticity, and macro-connectomics. The student shall conduct research in one or more of these areas. They will have the opportunity to shape the details of the project based on their specific interests, as well as to contribute to other ongoing projects on a range of topics, including: neuroinformatics of whole-brain modelling, mapping and modelling anatomical connectivity and microstructure with DWI in relation to ageing and stroke, and multi-scale modelling of the thalamocortical system in relation to sleep, pharmacological neuromodulation, and neuropsychiatric disease. The successful candidate should have, minimally, an undergraduate degree in neuroscience, engineering, physics, mathematics, psychology, or related area, and a demonstrable track record of research experience and interest in computational neuroscience and/or neuroimaging. While impressive progress was made recently in reinforcement learning, as shown by performance in benchmarks with a set of pre-defined external objectives, a major challenge is now to build autonomous agents that can progressively discover and learn open repertoires of skills in open worlds. Several steps in this direction have been made in the last decade, such as algorithms enabling agents to imagine their own goals and self-organize their learning curriculum (initially in the CDS community, and recently extended in the machine learning community). Another related line of work is open-ended evolution in multi-agent systems with co-evolution. However, a key challenge is how to measure progress in this area, as traditional RL benchmarks were not constructed to address open-ended learning. OKINAWA/OIST COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE COURSE 2020 Methods, Neurons, Networks and Behaviors June 29 to July 16, 2020 Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Japan https://groups.oist.jp/ocnc The aim of the Okinawa/OIST Computational Neuroscience Course is to provide opportunities for young researchers with theoretical backgrounds to learn the latest advances in neuroscience, and for those with experimental backgrounds to have hands-on experience in computational modeling. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 29th through July 16th, 2020 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. Like in preceding years, the 17th OCNC will be a comprehensive three-week course covering single neurons, networks, and behaviors with ample time for student projects. The first week will focus exclusively on methods with hands-on tutorials during the afternoons, while the second and third weeks will have lectures by international experts. The course has a strong hands-on component based on student proposed modeling or data analysis projects, which are further refined with the help of a dedicated tutor. Applicants are required to propose their project at the time of application. There is no tuition fee. The sponsor will provide lodging and meals during the course and provides partial travel support. We hope that this course will be a good opportunity for theoretical and experimental neuroscientists to meet each other and to explore the attractive nature and culture of Okinawa, the southernmost island prefecture of Japan. The goal of the workshop will be to showcase research in AI that is inspired by human cognition, as well as cognitive models that leverage AI to provide insight into various aspects of human learning and processing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to Loihi, Intel’s neuromorphic research chip [1], and will learn to run high-level applications on Loihi using Nengo! Postdoc position available (up to 5 years) at Monash Neuroscience of Consciousness (MoNoC), Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. We are seeking outstanding postdoctoral research fellows with strong skills in computational or mathematical neuroscience, whose research ambition is to improve the objective detection of consciousness based on the state-of-art analysis of EEG data. If you are successful, you will work in Tsuchiya's lab at Monash, on our National Health Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Ideas grants (2020-2024). The project will involve the development and application of the novel computational analysis of neural recordings from multiple brain areas, recorded from patients with loss of consciousness due to brain injuries and general anaesthesia as well as continuous recording of sleep-wake cycles recorded from epilepsy patients. Our focus will be the test of "integrated information theory of consciousness" (Tononi 2004 BMC, 2016 NRN, Oizumi et al 2016 PLoS Comp & PNAS) as well as its comparison with massive library of data analysis tools, called "hctsa" developed by Ben Fulcher (Fulcher 2013 Roy J Soc Interface, Fulcher 2017 Cell Systems). About the project: EuSNN will integrate leading European groups in network neuroscience and deliver training on knowledge and skills that enable students to pursue a successful career in this emerging field. euSNN will combine and train all approaches relevant for investigation of brain networks, including (f)MRI, M/EEG, in-vivo recordings, analysis, modelling, network modulation with optogenetics or non-invasive neurostimulation and studies on network changes in neurological disorders. Visual systems evolved according to consistent characteristics of the environment and task demands of the species, but also to be malleable in order to adapt to specific perturbations in the stimulus and the observer. The special issue aims to integrate work on the calibration of visual processes in relation to the stable properties of natural scenes or to variations in the sensory stimulus or the individual’s sensory apparatus, in different visual domains and over different time scales. Of particular interest are processes of short, medium and long-term adaptation, and processes to maintain perceptual constancy, as well as processes that occur during visual development. We are also seeking papers concerned with the benefits, costs, and limitations of these adaptations for optimal encoding of visual information, and for learning and representing relevant stimuli in the environment. Specifically, you will investigate the dynamic transitions between two rhythmic activity patterns in the spinal circuits of the tadpole to discover the cellular and network mechanisms driving this transition. You will build and simulate biologically realistic models of neural activity from population to conductance-based level as well as probabilistic models of connectivity (Roberts et al., J Neurosci 2014; Borisyuk et al., PLOS One 2014; Ferrario et al., eLife 2018). You will be supported by experimental collaborators who have determined neuronal and network properties with an exquisite level of detail. Predictions from your simulations will be tested experimentally using an array of electrophysiology and imaging tools. Fundamental neuronal mechanisms are highly conserved across vertebrate species, so your results will provide insight on dynamic circuit reconfiguration in more complex neural networks in mammals. We are seeking an outstanding scientist with a PhD in computer science, mathematics, physics, or engineering. A strong experience in neuronal modelling and excellent programming skills (in languages such as C++, Python, MATLAB) are expected. The ideal candidate will be familiar with the nonlinear dynamics of neural activity, have experience in developing models of electrically excitable cells (e.g. Hodgkin-Huxley type), and possess knowledge in neurophysiology. OKINAWA/OIST COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE COURSE 2020 Methods, Neurons, Networks and Behaviors June 29 to July 16, 2020 Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Japan https://groups.oist.jp/ocnc The aim of the Okinawa/OIST Computational Neuroscience Course is to provide opportunities for young researchers with theoretical backgrounds to learn the latest advances in neuroscience, and for those with experimental backgrounds to have hands-on experience in computational modeling. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 29th through July 16th, 2020 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. Like in preceding years, the 17th OCNC will be a comprehensive three-week course covering single neurons, networks, and behaviors with ample time for student projects. The course has a strong hands-on component based on student proposed modeling or data analysis projects, which are further refined with the help of a dedicated tutor. Although the manual approach often remains the golden standard in some tasks (e.g., segmentation), ML can be exploited to automate and facilitate the work of researchers and clinicians. Frequently used techniques include Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for classification problems, graph-based methods, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). More recently, deep ANNs have shown to be very successful in computer vision tasks owing to the ability to automatically extract hierarchical descriptive features from input images. It has also been used in the oncological and neuroimaging domains for automatic disease diagnosis, tissue segmentation, and even synthetic image generation. The main issue, however, remains the relative sample paucity of the typical imaging datasets that leads to a poor generalisation of the employed deep ANNs, considering the high number of required parameters. Consequently, parameter-efficient design paradigms, specifically tailored to medical applications, ought to be devised, also by exploiting CI-based techniques (e.g., neuroevolution). In this context, these advanced ML techniques can be suitably exploited to combine heterogeneous sources of information, allowing for multi-omics data integration. Such a kind of analyses may represent a significant step towards personalised medicine. Carnegie Mellon - University of Pittsburgh Joint Summer Undergraduate Program in Computational Neuroscience

Please encourage computationally-oriented undergraduates to apply to the Summer 2020 undergraduate program in computational neuroscience (uPNC) in Pittsburgh! Undergraduates interested in receiving research training in computational neuroscience are encouraged to apply to an NIH-sponsored summer program at the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (CNBC) in Pittsburgh, PA. The CNBC is a joint interdisciplinary program of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Starting in late May or early June each year, a select group of talented undergraduates will embark on a 10-week residential program that provides intensive, mentored research experiences in computational and theoretical neuroscience. Admitted students will receive a stipend and university dormitory housing. The core of the program is the opportunity to carry out an individual mentored research project working closely with a faculty mentor. Other aspects of the scientific program include faculty research talks, student presentations and discussion of articles from the scientific literature, presentations on career options and scientific ethics, and a concluding symposium in which students present their research. This program is intended for students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. after graduation. Any undergraduate may apply, but we are especially interested in attracting students with strong quantitative backgrounds. Many of our trainees are from colleges and universities that do not have extensive research programs, but all must be United States citizens or permanent residents, must be enrolled at a 4-year accredited institution, and must be in their sophomore or junior year at the time of application. We are hiring! We are looking for an enthusiastic Ph.D. candidate to join our team in the Zero-Noise Lab at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience in Frankfurt, Germany. The position The Zero-Noise Lab investigates how neuronal activity unfolds during natural behaviour rather than in the restricted conditions of most laboratory experiments, and how this compares between mouse and monkey. To this end, we implant electrodes to record neuronal activity in multiple visual brain areas as our animals move through a realistic virtual reality environment in search of virtual rewards. More information about the lab can be found at https://www.esi-frankfurt.de/research/havenith-scholvinck-lab/. The lab is jointly headed by Marieke Schölvinck and Martha Nari Havenith. Postdocs and Ph.D. students focus on either mice or monkeys, but intensely work together to ensure that we constantly learn from each other's experiments. This means that as a Ph.D. student you will work together closely with a postdoc to set up and run the experiments. Ideally, we would like you to start in spring 2020, but later would also work. We are most urgently looking for a Ph.D. student for the monkey experiments. The appointment is for three years initially, with the possibility of extension by another two years; the salary is in accordance with the regulations for academic personnel. Fully funded PhD Position at IIT - Computational approaches to study the neural code for somatosensation. I am are seeking candidates for a fully funded PhD position at the Italian Institute of Technology’s in my lab ( https://www.iit.it/people/stefano-panzeri ). IIT collaborates with SISSA and finances the positions at the PhD course at SISSA from the EU Marie Curie Training Network Neutouch (www.neutouch.eu) Although formally to be enrolled at SISSA, the successful candidate will conduct research in my laboratory at the IIT headquarters in Genova, Italy. The PhD project can focus on any of the research topics about somatosensory neural information processing that are of interest to the candidate, to my lab and to the Training Network (www.neutouch.eu) including: developing mathematical analysis methods and neural network models for studying neural population coding of somatosensory signals, for studying the neural bases of sensory perception and decision making, and for designing somatosensory neuro-inspired artificial sensors. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in numerate sciences, and have a strong propensity for interdisciplinary research. No extensive previous experience in neuroscience is required. However, a keen interest in understanding the brain is essential. The position is open immediately and will close when a suitable candidate is found.
