Postdoctoral position: Theory of deep learning

The Saxe lab<http://saxelab.org> is looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to join the group's research programme at UCL. The role lies at the interface of deep learning theory and theoretical neuroscience and will involve conducting research into artificial deep networks using techniques from applied mathematics. A particular focus is on understanding how depth affects learned representations and network behaviour. Funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit (GCNU) founded in 1998 is a world-leading centre for research in computational theoretical neuroscience and in probabilistic and statistical machine learning. The Unit's co-location with the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre at UCL creates the potential for a uniquely close interaction between theory and experiment in neuroscience and the integrated study of perception, control and learning. Two postdoc positions in theoretical neuroscience and nonlinear time-series analysis

*Call for postdoctoral researcher**s* Two postdoc positions are available in (A) theoretical neuroscience and (B) nonlinear time-series analysis/control (or active inference) under the supervision of Prof. Hideaki Shimazaki. *(A) Theoretical Neuroscience* We've been constructing statistical analysis methods for neural data to test theoretical hypotheses on the information coding, underlying circuitry mechanisms, and principles of adaptation in the brain (e.g., Bayesian brain hypothesis, predictive coding, free energy principles). We use methods in statistical physics and machine learning. See references below for our theoretical approaches to analyzing the dynamics of a neural population. We are looking for a postdoc interested in conducting theoretical studies while working closely with neuronal spiking and/or omics data. The contract is yearly-basis and renewable *until March 31, 2026*. Workplace: Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan *(B) Nonlinear time-series analysis and active inference* Our group strives to understand theoretical principles of organisms' perception and behavior in adapting to the environment and extend the knowledge to create intelligent agents. The successful candidate will have a PhD in biostatistics/statistics or a closely related field. They will have a research program in biostatistical analysis, methodology development, and computation, with a focus on the statistical analysis of and computation with complex data from human, animal, or health/biomedical research and clinical work. They will have an outstanding record of research in the form of publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements, as appropriate for their career path and stage. The Human Brain Project (HBP) unites researchers and scientists to decode the mechanisms underlying this unique system by investigating the human brain and its diseases with the help of highly advanced ICT tools. As such, the HBP is developing EBRAINS, the new European digital research infrastructure, as a lasting contribution to the global science community, an open source tool that allows scientists and technology experts to seamlessly collaborate, thereby accelerating advancements in the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine. The Helmholtz International BigBrain Analytics and Learning Laboratory (HIBALL) is an HBP Partnering Project that aims to transform the well-known BigBrain model to its next level by reinforcing utilization and co-development of the latest AI and high-performance computing (HPC) technologies for building highly detailed 3D brain models. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is particularly relevant in this regard as its function is poorly understood and potential cross-species differences remain highly debated. This workshop brings together experimental and computational scientists whose work allows a comparison of the anatomy and function of the PFC between species (in particular between humans, monkeys and mice). EBRAINS is uniquely suited to provide a platform to compare anatomy, physiology and behaviour between species, due to its atlases, numerous datasets, as well as the whole brain models from different species. The interactive format of the workshop will allow speakers as well as participants from largely separated fields to interact and discuss, which is expected to create novel insights as well as lead to more coherence and clarity in the relevant terminology, formats and important research directions in the field. Preparatory workshop for shaping funded research teams in neuromorphic and unconventional computing (Europe only)

The Volkswagen Foundation -- Germany's largest private research funding organization -- launches an initiative for the development of neuromorphic and other non-digital approaches to analyse and engineer computing systems. One action within this initiative is to support the formation of INTERDISCIPLINARY, possibly multi-national research teams. In a preparatory "Ideation" workshop, to be held in Einbeck (Germany) in December 5-8, 2022, European researchers interested in non-digital computing are invited to exchange views and ideas and start networking. The target audience is open-minded postdocs and assistant/junior professors with backgrounds in relevant areas - including but not restricted to materials and devices, microchip technology, optical computing, neuroscience, cognitive modeling, theory of computing, machine learning, complex dynamical systems, or philosophy of computing. Post-doc in Neurophysiology: Cortical control of free viewing eye movements

The work will include recording from the frontal eye field and superior colliculus as well as inactivation experiments in LIP and FEF. Ph.D. candidates will focus on research in neurophysiology, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), and machine learning to study clinical populations. Two Ph.D. projects will use clinical routine EEG recorded and evaluated in public hospitals in the process of neurological evaluation to predict patients’ clinical profiles. The other project will apply MEG to explore cortico-cerebellar brain networks in children with autism. However, while the RL formalism is elegant and concise, real-world embodied learning problems (e.g., in robotics) deviate substantially from the most widely studied RL problem settings. The need to exist in a real physical environment challenges RL methods in terms of generalization, robustness, and capacity for lifelong learning -- all aspects of the RL problem that are often neglected in commonly studied benchmark problems. In this talk, I will discuss how we can devise a framework for learning-based control that is at its core focused on generalization, robustness, and continual adaptation. I will argue that effective utilization of previously collected experience, in combination with multi-task learning, represents one of the most promising paths for tackling these challenges, and present recent research in RL and robotics that studies this perspective. Bio Sergey Levine received a BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2009, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2014. He joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley in fall 2016. His work focuses on machine learning for decision making and control, with an emphasis on deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms. Applications of his work include autonomous robots and vehicles, as well as computer vision and graphics. His research includes developing algorithms for end-to-end training of deep neural network policies that combine perception and control, scalable algorithms for inverse reinforcement learning, deep reinforcement learning algorithms, and more. INCF IC survey on barriers to neuroscience data sharing and reuse - please forward

(2) After annotating the HBN short films, the HBM data will be exported to OpenNeuro (openneuro.org) under BIDS standards (bids.neuroimaging.io), and will be made available via the forthcoming NEMAR data portal (nemar.org) for processing on the XSEDE high-performance computer network via the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG, nsgportal.org) The HBN M/EEG and behavioral/eye tracking data will be analyzed at the source and source network levels (Akalin Acar & Makeig, 2021) using advanced applications of Independent Component Analysis (Makeig et al., 1996; Delorme et al., 2012), Bayesian source and network clustering using SCALE- optimized forward head models (Akalin Acar et al., 2016, 2020). Tools and pipelines developed in the project will be made available in EEGLAB and through NSG. Our neuroscientific goal is to model the development of cortical EEG source dynamics and associated eye gaze patterns during viewing of 'moving pictures', and to model and explore individual differences in these processes. ESI SyNC 8-9 Sept. 2022 - The ever-changing brain: Through development and evolution

We are happy to announce that the Ernst Strüngmann Institute Systems Neuroscience Conference 2022 -9th ESI SyNC- will take place in-person this year, on September 8th and 9th at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. A hybrid format will be implemented, such that online participation is also possible. This year’s topic is "The ever-changing brain - through development and evolution". Eleven speakers will discuss their research and views on the development, organization, and evolution of the brain from a wide array of viewpoints: from anatomy to function, from the microcircuit to whole-brain network level, from the origins of cognition in single-celled organisms to complex social behavior in primates. This year’s conference is a great platform to learn about comparative neuroscience, organizational and evolutionary aspects of neural processing, and developmental mechanisms of cognitive and sensory systems. Young researchers will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and raise questions in formal and informal discussions. There will also be a poster session for which we welcome submissions. While the existence of this relationship is generally accepted, understanding the neural mechanisms that lead to individual diversity remains an open question that requires continued development of understanding and assessment of individual cognitive abilities. One of the suggested pathways includes the perception of emotional sensations that are experienced towards multisensory perception systems with a cognitive feeling. Cognitive feeling can be described as a sense of confidence, knowing, familiarity, distinguishing reality and fluency of information from multisensory perceptual experiences (Clore and Parrott, 1994; Arango-Muñoz 2014). Where emotional sensations, or affective feelings, are the result of perceived multisensory integration such as liking, disliking, or fear, arousal. Each kind of feeling is then providing information about different system. The affective feeling provides information on whether what is perceived is positive or negative with regards to our expectations. The cognitive feeling is the informational source of our expectations, knowing and understanding the multisensory information. The principles of cognitive feeling can be applied in developmental and cognitive robotics (Asada et al. 2009; Tani 2016), predictive coding theories (Friston & Kiebel 2009; Friston 2010), computational psychiatry (Montague et al. 2012), and behavioural studies through the verification of virtual reality-based approaches. To enable the IoBNT and its groundbreaking applications, such as continuous intrabody health monitoring, it is imperative to devise low-complexity nanoscale communication techniques suitable for the envisioned nanomachines of simple architectures. The most promising communication technology for realizing the IoBNT is Molecular Communications (MC), as it ubiquitously manifests itself in many complex biological systems in the Universe, and thus, stands as one of the most common communication modalities, optimized from many aspects as a result of billions of years of evolutionary advancement. Making use of this naturally existing technology requires understanding its foundations through our existing modeling and analysis tools. This quest, which started almost 15 years ago, has received increasing attention from ICT researchers, which have been overly inspired by conventional electromagnetic communication technologies in their approach to this radically different paradigm. These theoretical approaches, however, have not always come with sufficient physical relevance. Currently, this emerging field has come to a critical turning point, as many researchers have started to report on initial MC experiments following different approaches and using different materials, while consistently pointing out a discrepancy between the obtained experimental results and the past theoretical work. This reveals the need to rethink the previous efforts and come up with new interdisciplinary strategies, thus building practical MC techniques and developing feasible MC system components, experimental testbeds, and prototypes in order to close the gap between theory and practice, and expedite the transfer of this emerging technology to the market. Among the challenges stated above, this Special Issue is particularly focused on the practical aspects of MC. Therefore, we are calling for technical papers that report on new research with the potential to move this field forward towards its practical applications, as well as surveys/tutorials focusing on the practical challenges of MC research. 2022 Western-Fields School in Networks and Neuroscience

Lectures will cover graph theory, network dynamics, advanced algebra, and machine learning. Students will receive intensive training ranging from an introduction to advanced methods in these fields. This summer school will be held September 19-23 on the campus of Western University (London, Ontario), with a closing session at the Fields Institute (Toronto, Ontario). Fully-funded PhD project on networks in Mark Humphries’ lab, University of Nottingham (Oct 2022 start)

A fully-funded 3.5 year PhD project is available in the Mark Humphries’ lab at the University of Nottingham, UK. Broad classes of network models, like small-world networks and scale-free networks, have taught us much about the world. But we suspect a major class of networks has been missed. This project will introduce and explore a new class of model weighted networks, “divergent” networks, in which the structure described by the links and their weights do not match. Most theoretical work on weighted networks assumes that they do, so little is known about the properties of these divergent networks. We will close that gap by quantifying the existence and extent of divergence in a range of real-world networks, including brain connectomes at both single neuron and inter-area level; by creating generative models for these networks; and by exploring how divergence alters a network’s dynamics across a range of dynamical systems implemented on the nodes, including neural models. The student will be joining the Humphries lab (https://www.humphries-lab.org/) who draw on network theory and dynamical systems approaches to understand neural coding and computations. Hi, We have an opening for a research assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Carmen Varela (Psychology Department, Florida Atlantic University; https://www.varelalab.org/) to investigate sleep oscillations that correlate with memory consolidation and sleep quality. Sleep disruption is a common symptom of neurodegenerative and mental disorders and is thought to be linked to their progression. Thalamocortical activity during sleep is critical for the contribution of sleep to memory consolidation, but it is not clear what oscillatory and cellular activity patterns relate to sleep quality and memory consolidation. The candidate will assist with administrative and scientific aspects of this project, using rats to investigate the patterns of thalamic activity that promote healthy sleep function and memory consolidation. More generally, the lab uses state-of-the-art techniques to investigate the neural network mechanisms of cognitive behavior, with a focus on learning and memory and on the role of the neuronal circuits formed by the thalamus. *Keywords*: behaving rodent extracellular electrophysiology, sleep oscillations, learning and memory. PhD and postdoctoral positions at the Technical University of Munich

We invite applications for PhD and postdoctoral positions at the Computation in Neural Circuits group led by Prof. Julijana Gjorgjieva at the Technical University of Munich in Germany. Using mathematical and computational approaches, we study how neurons and the synaptic connections between them tune their properties during early development and young life to ensure appropriate network dynamics and behavior. Another interest relates to how adult function and behavior emerge from a diversity of mechanisms, including synaptic plasticity, sensory noise, and biophysical constraints. We address these questions at different spatial scales, from the organization of individual synaptic inputs on dendrites to large-scale networks of higher order cortex. We are especially interested in these processes during development before and shortly after birth when the brain is highly plastic, but general aspects of learning and memory, especially under naturalistic stimuli and behaviors are also of interest. We collaborate with different experimental research groups in the US, UK, Netherlands, Spain and Germany and benefit from interactions with the strong neuroscience community in Munich, including the SyNergy Cluster of Excellence. Our applications range across animals from rodent to Drosophila to reptiles and humans. Successful applicants can choose from a range of projects including theoretical model development and analytical calculations, numerical simulations, and applications to rich datasets from collaborating labs. Open topics include: - Formation and co-organization of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs on dendrites, including dendritic growth, receptive field formation and alignment, and emergence of tuning. - Development of biophysical models of synaptic plasticity at the cellular and subcellular levels and investigation of their functional consequences. - Reliable top-down modulation of network dynamics during synaptic plasticity, including interactions between different information streams. - Mechanistic dissection of cortical computations driven by different cell types, especially interneurons. - Modeling network attractor states of resilience, and synaptic and homeostatic plasticity processes to rebalance network states after perturbation. Hi everyone, We have started a new collaborative, open comp neuro research project (in the spirit of the Polymath project<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymath_Project> that was a huge success in mathematics). Everyone is invited to participate, and anyone who does contribute will get to be an author. Some details below, but you can just jump straight in to the website and take a look here: https://comob-project.github.io/snn-sound-localization/ The idea is to experiment with doing science in the spirit of collaboration rather than competition. We've set up an initial research topic and some code/results, and then you choose what direction you want to take, get feedback from others and give feedback to them on their ideas. We have an infrastructure that makes all contributions appear automatically on the website. We're running a discussion group, and planning local workshops. The first one of those will be in Paris on July 8th, just before FENS. This project grew out of my Cosyne tutorial<https://neural-reckoning.github.io/cosyne-tutorial-2022/> on using machine learning methods with spiking neural networks (surrogate gradient descent). It's a relatively easy topic to get into and a lot of low hanging fruit to pick, so hopefully ideal for this approach. Thanks & kind regards, Thomas --- CNS*2022 Workshop on Bio-inspired active AI<http://users.sussex.ac.uk/~tn41/CNS2022_workshop/> Recent advances in AI and notably in deep learning, have proven incredibly successful in creating solutions to specific complex problems (e.g. beating the best human players at Go, and driving cars through cities). But as we learn more about these approaches, their limitations are becoming more apparent in terms of high energy consumption, fragility, and lack of transferability between tasks. These limitations are particularly apparent when contrasted with naturally evolved intelligence. While no animals can play Go or drive cars, they are incredibly good at doing what they have evolved to do. For instance, ants learn how to forage effectively despite their tiny brains and minimal exploration of their world. We argue this difference comes about because natural intelligence is a property of closed-loop brain-body-environment interactions. Evolved innate behaviours in concert with specialised sensors and neural circuits extract and encode task-relevant information with maximal efficiency, aided by mechanisms of selective attention that focus learning on task-relevant features. Postdoc position in computational systems neuroscience, Voigts Lab, Janelia

The Voigts Lab at HHMI Janelia Research Campus is recruiting postdocs. We'll work on how neocortex builds and uses models of the world to give animals complex cognitive abilities. The lab will specifically attempt to go beyond repeated stimulus-response associations, instead using complex, naturalistic spatial behaviors in rodents to study flexible cognition. We'll be able to throw significant technology at the problem of combining sufficient measurements with complex naturalistic behavior, but more importantly we'll have to overcome the challenge of modeling, analyzing, and ultimately learning from data when there are few or no trials to average over. We will use experimental approaches, such as designing new tasks where mice make decisions based on incomplete knowledge of their environment, as well as developing new computational techniques to study circuit mechanisms in the context of unconstrained behaviours. We're part of the new Mechanistic Cognitive Neuroscience research area at Janelia, where there are unique resources for this type of work. We'll work closely with experimental, theoretical, methods, and machine learning researchers in and outside of Janelia to make this research program possible, collaborative, and fun. The KiloNeurons ERC project: post-doctoral position in theoretical neuroscience

The Burak Lab at the Hebrew University is seeking to hire a postdoctoral research fellow in theoretical neuroscience. The postdoctoral fellow will take part in the ERC funded KiloNeurons project, led by Edvard Moser (Kavli Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience, NTNU) and Yoram Burak (Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences and the Racah Institute of Physics). The project aims to identify how thousands of neurons in the mammalian cortex interact with each other to achieve computational and cognitive functions. The KiloNeurons project offers opportunities to work on diverse theoretical and computational questions. These involve approaches ranging from pure theoretical modelling to analysis and interpretation of large-scale neural data. Theoretical tools include methods from nonlinear dynamics, machine learning, statistical physics, and information theory. A generous budget is available for travel between Israel and Norway to facilitate close interaction with members of the Moser lab, for travel and participation in scientific meetings, and for purchase of computing equipment. We are looking for candidates with excellent demonstrated abilities in theoretical research, strong intellectual curiosity and drive, a keen interest in computational neuroscience, and an interest in relating theory to experimental data. Candidates must have an excellent research record in theoretical neuroscience, theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. PhD position offer: Neuro-inspired macroscale model of tCS-induced changes on epileptic networks

*Title*: Neuro-inspired macroscale model of tCS-induced changes on epileptic networks *Context*. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields. *Rationale. *Electrical stimulation (supra-threshold) and neuromodulation (sub-threshold) are two different methods that can be used to alter brain plasticity in order to lower hyperexcitability and subsequently decrease the occurrence of epileptiform events. These events are generated large-scale brain networks involving interconnected distant brain regions characterized by an increase of excitability. In this context, computational models are an efficient way to understand features of epileptiform events recorded in patients, either intracerebrally or from electrodes located on the scalp. In addition, it is an efficient tool to analyze the impact of tCS on the brain and optimize its therapeutic effect. *Objective. *This research focuses on neuromodulation induced by transcranial current stimulation (tCS). The objective of the proposed PhD position is to design a neuro-inspired macroscale model of the brain that will simulate electroencephalographic (EEG) signals under 2 conditions: spontaneous activity and tCS. The model will be able to simulate the activity of epileptogenic networks generating epileptic spikes during interictal periods. It will account for immediate (acute) and lasting (short- or long-term) effects of neuromodulatory weak electric fields, which remain elusive. Simulations will help the design of tCS-based neuromodulation strategies aimed at lowering interictal epileptic spikes. *Methods. *The model will start from previous results of the team (Merlet et al. PlosOne 2013, Bensaid et al. Frontiers in Neuroscience 2019). It will consist of a macroscale network of interconnected (edges) neural populations (nodes) located in the neocortex. Neurophysiological activity of each node will be generated by a neural mass model. The whole model will allow for simulation of normal and epileptic EEG activity (interictal spikes, ictal activity) under 2 conditions: spontaneous and tCS. Simulated signals will be compared to EEG signals recorded in patients under similar conditions. The model will be embedded into an existing software named COALIA developed in Python. tCS induced E-fields will be simulated using SimNibs (to start with) and with tools developed at Neuroelectrics. Optimal parameters reducing epileptic activity will be determined. *Scientific environment. *GALVANI involves three partners: LTSI-Inserm (Rennes), AMU-APHM (Marseille) and Neuroelectrics (Barcelona). It is intended to develop the next generation of brain stimulation solutions. GALVANI can be viewed as a distributed lab (Rennes-Barcelona-Marseille) working under a common policy to ensure coherence of research and intense collaboration and cross-fertilization. Fellows will be co-supervised in a unique, shared environment with exposure to science, technology and clinical experience. *Candidate profile.* The research project is at the interface between biomathematics (neuro-inspired models), biophysics (electric field models), and neuroscience/neurology (epilepsy). The candidate will preferably have some background in dynamical systems, computational neuroscience/systems biology or in electrical engineering, with experience in bio-signal processing and biophysics. Knowledge in electrophysiology and/or EEG analysis would be an asset. The PhD fellow will join a multidisciplinary team including research scientists in biomedical engineering, neurophysiological modeling, bio-physics, signal processing, electrophysiology, neurology. - *Contract*. However, until recently, the field lacked an appropriate set of techniques for simultaneously measuring neural activity and behavior in freely moving animals, forcing investigators to use immobilized animals performing simplistic behavioral tasks. Synergistic technological breakthroughs in fluorescent brain imaging and behavioral tracking approaches have paved the way to a new type of neuroscience that enables tracking behavior in setups compatible with brain imaging and manipulation, even at the single-cell level, using optical electrophysiology techniques. A diversity of such neurobehavioral imaging systems have been recently invented, spanning the range of conventional model organisms including C. Elegans, Flies, Zebrafish, and Rodents. Each species and approach showcases unique technical challenges, achievements, and opportunities. Our aim with this Research Topic is to provide an overview of this new field. We will present not only the technological advances but also discuss the novel type of experiments and insights that they promise. To achieve that, we welcome articles that span the following categories: i) Algorithms and imaging systems for tracking and quantifying complex behaviors of freely moving animals; ii) Molecular tools and microscopes, enabling capturing or manipulating neuronal dynamics. Under certain circumstances, gesture can substitute for speech, and when it does, it embodies the properties of language that children themselves bring to language learning, and underscores the resilience of language itself. Under other circumstances, gesture can form a fully integrated system with speech. When it does, it both predicts and promotes learning, and underscores the resilience of gesture in thinking. Together, these lines of research show how much of our minds is hidden in our hands. Bio Susan Goldin-Meadow is the Beardsley Ruml Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the most basic building blocks of language and thought as they are developed in early childhood. Specifically, she is interested in uncovering linguistic components that are so basic they will arise in a child’s communication system even if the child has limited access to outside linguistic input. Professor Goldin-Meadow’s research has also generated more broadly applicable insights into how the spontaneous gestures that learners produce can reveal their readiness to learn language, math, and scientific concepts. Professor Goldin-Meadow is the founding Editor of Language Learning and Development, and has been president of the International Society for Gesture Studies, president of the Cognitive Development Society, chair of the Cognitive Science Society, and president of the Association for Psychological Society. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, received the William James award for lifetime achievement in basic research from APS, was elected to the American Academy for Arts and Science in 2005, and the National Academy of Sciences in 2020. New publication from the INCF Infrastructure Committee

The INCF Infrastructure Committee’s “Recommendations for repositories and science gateways from a neuroscience perspective” <https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01334-1> has been published today, May 16, as a Comment in Scientific Data <https://www.nature.com/sdata/>. The project, initiated by the INCF Infrastructure Committee, aimed to develop an inclusive set of criteria that could apply to a wide and diverse range of digital services, including repositories, science gateways, data, and software. “We set out to develop criteria that were specific to neuroscience, but we realized during the process that our end result would be applicable to other data-heavy disciplines as well”, says Malin Sandström, coordinator for the Infrastructure Committee. “When you look at the problem closely, it turns out that many of the criteria have to do with best practices for how a service is run and governed, rather than with which types of data and other content it contains”. The work began in October 2020. A draft version <https://www.incf.org/criteria-checklist> was presented to the community at the INCF Assembly in April 2021, in a workshop <https://f1000research.com/documents/10-1026> with representatives from organizations engaged in similar projects, including FAIRSharing, FORCE11, and the Coalition of Open Access Repositories (COAR). A public first version of the criteria checklist was made available on the INCF portal <https://www.incf.org/criteria-checklist> in late 2021. With these criteria, INCF wants to help neuroscience researchers and students choose good services for their specific use cases and help service providers make good and future-proof decisions for setup and operations. Former Chair Wojtek Goscinski, now Chief Executive Officer at the Australian National Imaging Facility, explains: “Data repositories and scientific gateways are critical, but often underappreciated, components in the scientific workflow. It’s important that researchers can navigate the digital landscape to find the services that they need and to understand which services are fit-for-purpose. Likewise, repositories and gateways have increasing obligations to their users”. Postdoc positions in modeling/analysis for understanding sleep

POSTDOC POSITIONS IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. A new NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. The Goodhill lab is now looking for 2 postdocs for the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong will record from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab will analyze the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and use these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. Theoretical and experimental work will be intimitely linked. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants for the positions in the Goodhill lab should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in modeling sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. The lab both performs its own behavioral and neural imaging experiments with larval zebrafish, and collaborates on the analysis of data generated elsewhere. UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. Junior Chair in Computational Neurosciences at Aix-Marseille Université, France

Dear colleagues, Aix-Marseille Université (AMU) is opening a Junior Chair in Computational Neuroscience, a new tenured-track path at French Universities. The position is open at Junior Professor level (level of experience 3-10 years after PhD) and is supported with a start-up package of 470K€, including the salary for the Junior Professor. After 3-5 years, depending upon the scientific achievements, the Chair should lead to a permanent Faculty position at the Professor level (PR2). NEST Conference 2022 - Extension of abstract submission deadline

Dear all, The abstract submission deadline for the (virtual) NEST Conference 2022 has been extended to Wednesday, 25 May. We are looking forward to your contributions! The NEST Conference provides an opportunity for the NEST Community to meet, exchange success stories, swap advice, learn about current developments in and around NEST spiking network simulation and its application. This year's conference will again take place as a virtual conference on Thursday/Friday 23/24 June 2022. Under certain circumstances, gesture can substitute for speech, and when it does, it embodies the properties of language that children themselves bring to language learning, and underscores the resilience of language itself. Under other circumstances, gesture can form a fully integrated system with speech. When it does, it both predicts and promotes learning, and underscores the resilience of gesture in thinking. Together, these lines of research show how much of our minds is hidden in our hands. Bio Susan Goldin-Meadow is the Beardsley Ruml Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the most basic building blocks of language and thought as they are developed in early childhood. Specifically, she is interested in uncovering linguistic components that are so basic they will arise in a child’s communication system even if the child has limited access to outside linguistic input. Professor Goldin-Meadow’s research has also generated more broadly applicable insights into how the spontaneous gestures that learners produce can reveal their readiness to learn language, math, and scientific concepts. Professor Goldin-Meadow is the founding Editor of Language Learning and Development, and has been president of the International Society for Gesture Studies, president of the Cognitive Development Society, chair of the Cognitive Science Society, and president of the Association for Psychological Society. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, received the William James award for lifetime achievement in basic research from APS, was elected to the American Academy for Arts and Science in 2005, and the National Academy of Sciences in 2020.
