PhD position 'Big Sleep Data'

Hi, We are looking for a PhD candidate (or junior postdoc) combining data science/AI, wearable EEG technology, and big sleep data at the Donders Institute in Nijmegen, NL. The project will focus on (i) developing a database for large datasets of neurophysiological sleep recordings together with multimodal analysis strategies/pipelines, and (ii) integration/fusion of neurophysiological data from different sensors with non-physiological data and annotations. The position will be integrated into the highly collaborative and interdisciplinary European Marie Curie Network "Lullabyte", working on the intersection of computer science, sleep research, and musicology; and the Donders Sleep & Memory Lab, working on the cognitive neuroscience of sleep and dreaming. NeuroDataShare 2023 workshop and hackathon - Sainsbury Wellcome Centre London, Feb 20-23

(Apologies for cross posting) * * *NeuroDataShare 2023: Exploring and sharing multi-scale neuroscience data* Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, London, UK http://www.neurodatashare.org Modern experimental neuroscience is producing huge amounts of data at a rapidly increasing pace, with population recordings using multielectrode arrays and imaging and simultaneous behavioural data together with transcriptomics and anatomical reconstructions. While these data are useful to those who obtain them in the original studies, their value is magnified when they are shared in accessible formats with the wider community for use in new studies, and to investigate brain function from different perspectives. To facilitate this, many groups are developing tools, standardised languages and databases to help specify, analyse, visualise and share such data sets. *This meeting will bring together experimentalists, those offering infrastructure solutions for sharing data in neuroscience and those who wish to reuse, reanalyse and gain new insight into publicly available datasets.* The meeting will consist of a *2 day workshop of scientific presentations <http://www.neurodatashare.org/programme.html> (Mon 20th & Tues 21st Feb 2023)* at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre <http://www.neurodatashare.org/directions> from leading neuroscientists who are generating data of different types across multiple scales, who are faced with issues of how to disseminate their output to other researchers. Postdoc position with Priebe/Seidemann/Taillefumier labs at University of Texas, Austin

The Departments of Neuroscience, Mathematics, and Psychology at UT Austin are inviting applications for a postdoctoral research position to work with Professors Nicholas Priebe, Eyal Seidemann and Thibaud Taillefumier. The position is funded by an NIH grant shared by the Priebe, Seidemann and Taillefumier labs. The grant focuses on explaining the origin and putative roles of the neural variability recorded in visual cortex during behavior. A significant component of the proposed work will consist of modeling and statistical analysis of simultaneous recordings of single-cell membrane potential and extracellular neural populations during a variety of behavioral tasks. Competitive candidates include those with a strong computational and data science skills and proven experience in the analysis of behavior and neural signals. Applicants should have a PhD in computational neuroscience, system neuroscience, machine learning, or related quantitative fields. Postdoc/PhD opening in information processing and criticality in neural networks

We are recruiting a talented postdoctoral researcher or PhD student to participate in the project BRAINCIP, “Brain-wide criticality and Information processing”. The project lies at the interface of physics and neuroscience, and aims to test key assumptions of the critical brain hypothesis by investigating in vivo the role of brain-wide critical neural dynamics in information processing and complex brain functions in the Zebrafish. To this end, state-of-the-art experimental techniques to follow and finely perturb brain dynamics will be combined with theoretical and computational approaches to large scale data analysis and modeling. The ideal candidate will have a quantitative background—e.g. PhD/Master in mathematics, physics, computer science—, and strong programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Matlab), along with (preferable but not mandatory) experience in applying this background to neuroscience. Experience with data analysis is a plus, but it is not mandatory. The post doc will join the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the Padova Neuroscience Center and live in highly active and stimulating interdisciplinary environment at the University of Padova, one of the most prestigious universities in Italy. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 19th through July 6th, 2023 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. DEADLINE EXTENDED - Postdoc opening in computational analysis of electrophysiological data (FunSy team - Strasbourg)

We are currently inviting applications for a full-time postdoc position under the joint co-mentoring of Dr. Demian Battaglia and Dr. Romain Goutagny (University of Strasbourg, France; Functional System's Dynamics team – FunSy, https://funsyteam.org<https://funsyteam.org/>). The position starts as soon as possible and can last up to two years. This job offer is funded by the French ANR "HippoComp" project, which focuses on the complexity of hippocampal oscillations and the hypothesis that such complexity can serve as computational resource. In our joint FunSy team, we perform electrophysiological recordings in hippocampus and cortex during spatial navigation and memory tasks in mice (wild type and mutant developing various neuropathologies) and have access to vast data through local and international cooperation. Furthermore, we use a large spectrum of computational tools ranging from time-series and network analyses, information theory and machine-learning to multi-scale computational modeling. A good idea about some of the approaches used in the lab can be found in this recent preprint: Douchamps et al. 2022. Hippocampal gamma oscillations form complex ensembles modulated by behavior and learning, bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.10.17.512498) We are seeking for various profiles of candidates, with main expertise in either computational or experimental neuroscience. Computational project components would deal with numerically-intensive data analyses (dimensional reduction, encoding/decoding, design of discriminative features...). Experimental project components would focus primarily on simultaneous fiber photometry and local-fields potentials recordings, together with the pre-processing of these data. Interested candidates could have hybrid experimental/computational projects. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in systems or computational neuroscience, with previous experience in the analysis of rich datasets. In addition, we expect programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Matlab), good communication skills in English (oral and written), the ability to work well in an international team, curiosity and open-mindedness. Strasbourg University is home of an emergent and active community in neuroscience, from molecules and cells to whole brain imaging and behavior, in relation with clinics. The proximity with Germany and Switzerland is an asset allowing interactions with transnational Computational and Neuroscience teams. MSc Internship Project: Dynamical study of a mean-field model of neural network activity driven by biophysical ion exchange mechanisms Project description. In neuroscience, the question of scales is central, ranging from the molecule to the whole brain. In theoretical and computational neuroscience, it is possible to model these different scales and to build the link between them [1]. In particular to describe the activity on the scale of a population of neurons by a mean-field approach, capturing some aspects of the corresponding spiking network. A recently derived mean-field model of a biophysical description of neuronal excitability shows abilities to capture synchronized activities observed in pathological states, such as seizures [2]. The system obtained is a compound of coupled differential equations which can be studied by applying timescale separation methods [3, 4]. This model is a candidate to be used within The Virtual Brain [5] for clinical applications. A detailed characterization is therefore essential. Main objectives. 1. To identify the different dynamical regimes of this model, in particular in a parameter configuration corresponding to a healthy state; 2. Postdoc opening in analysis of complex hippocampal oscillations (Demian Battaglia and Romain Goutagny's FunSy team, Strasbourg)

We are currently inviting applications for a full-time postdoc position under the joint co-mentoring of Dr. Demian Battaglia and Dr. Romain Goutagny (University of Strasbourg, France; Functional System's Dynamics team – FunSy, https://funsyteam.org<https://funsyteam.org/>). The position starts as soon as possible and can last up to two years. This job offer is funded by the French ANR "HippoComp" project, which focuses on the complexity of hippocampal oscillations and the hypothesis that such complexity can serve as computational resource. In our joint FunSy team, we perform electrophysiological recordings in hippocampus and cortex during spatial navigation and memory tasks in mice (wild type and mutant developing various neuropathologies) and have access to vast data through local and international cooperation. Furthermore, we use a large spectrum of computational tools ranging from time-series and network analyses, information theory and machine-learning to multi-scale computational modeling. A good idea about some of the approaches used in the lab can be found in this recent preprint: Douchamps et al. 2022. Hippocampal gamma oscillations form complex ensembles modulated by behavior and learning, bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.10.17.512498) We are seeking for various profiles of candidates, with main expertise in either computational or experimental neuroscience. Computational project components would deal with numerically-intensive data analyses (dimensional reduction, encoding/decoding, design of discriminative features...). Experimental project components would focus primarily on simultaneous fiber photometry and local-fields potentials recordings, together with the pre-processing of these data. Interested candidates could have hybrid experimental/computational projects. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in systems or computational neuroscience, with previous experience in the analysis of rich datasets. In addition, we expect programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Matlab), good communication skills in English (oral and written), the ability to work well in an international team, curiosity and open-mindedness. Strasbourg University is home of an emergent and active community in neuroscience, from molecules and cells to whole brain imaging and behavior, in relation with clinics. Error forward propagation: Feedforward Closedloop Learning (FCL)

Dear all, There has been a lot of interest recently in performing deep learning without backprop - papers by Geoff Hinton and Barak Pearlmutter in particular showing how supervised and self-supervised learning can be achieved solely with forward message propagation. We wanted to mention here our own work dating back to 2019, in which we realised real-time reinforcement learning in a closed-loop setting via the forward propagation of error signals. Naturally forward propagation has the attraction of biological feasibility, but from our point of view the more important point is that error signals are then defined in the space of sensory inputs rather than motor outputs, which makes a lot more sense in the context of a self-contained autonomous agent. Rather than the reward functions of Q learning, we use reflex circuits to generate the errors: the goal of sensory learning is to predict disturbances before they occur, thereby silencing the reflex. To see the system in operation, here is a real robot learning a simple line-following task, where the system initially uses a light sensor to drive a reflex steering action, and learning discovers predictive information from vision which pre-empts this reflex: https://sigmoid.social/@berndporr/109534507823054808 Because the algorithm works for deep networks, arbitrarily complex predictive cues can in principle be discovered. It has recently attracted the attention of researchers who have been working in information and communication technologies (ICT) and striving to create cooperative ‘nanonetworks’ of artificial nanomachines, which can be interfaced with or immersed in natural biological systems. Application of ICT tools to this natural modality of communications has laid the foundations of bio-inspired, engineered MC systems, and also contributed to the understanding of natural MC networks. It is no wonder that such fundamental form of communications has been a topic of significant interest in many diverse research fields beyond ICT, such as synthetic biology, systems chemistry, micro/nanorobotics, network medicine, biophysics and physiology, biochemical sensing, lab- and organ-on-chips, bio-interfaces, molecular and biological computing, drug discovery, design and delivery. However, different languages are typically adopted by different fields to refer to the same phenomenon that the ICT researchers call molecular communications, such as chemical communications, biological/cell signaling, interaction networks, which all fundamentally denote information transfer via mass transport and/or biochemical reactions and interactions. Despite the significant overlap in the problem and the application domain, not only the language but also the research methodologies and the solution approaches are diverse, partly due to the apparent lack of strong links between different research communities. On the other hand, closer interactions between these disciplines can create important synergies that can help collaboratively target more challenging research problems and develop unprecedented applications, where the power of true interdisciplinarity is unleashed. These interactions can also help better identify the common motifs in the heterogeneous sea of molecular communication problems and scenarios comprising both biotic and abiotic systems, and help reframe and standardize the way we approach biological and bio-inspired communications in the hope of enabling a common scientific and engineering language. The aim of this Special Issue is to facilitate such interactions by bringing together the contributions of prominent researchers from diverse fields that share a common denominator with the ICT approach to MC. Interdisciplinary PhD program in London, UK – call for 2023 applications – deadline 10th January. The London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium (LIDo) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is a BBSRC funded collaborative partnership offering world-class interdisciplinary research. LIDo unites an exciting team of outstanding universities and unique specialist institutions to provide innovative cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in the heart of one of the world's most vibrant and scientifically stimulating cities. LIDo will be offering 41 fully funded studentships in September 2023 across our DTP and iCASE routes of entry; these include home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend in the region of £19,668. A maximum of 11 of these positions can be offered to students eligible for overseas fee rates, where LIDo will cover the full fee amount. DTP Route In the first year of the programme DTP students will undertake two 4-month research projects in different partner institutions, selecting from a catalogue of over 200 topics. The choice of PhD topic is finalised after the second rotation project. Research opportunities are available across the breadth of BBSRC remit. PhD student position in Machine Learning: Theoretically motivated deep learning At the Division of Computational Science and Technology at KTH we are seeking a new PhD student in Machine Learning / Computer Vision to handle scale-dependent information in image data. In our research, we develop deep networks for processing image data that handle scaling transformations and other image transformations in a theoretically well-founded manner. Our research in this area comprises both theoretical modelling of the influence of image transformations on different architectures for deep networks as well as experimental evaluations of such networks on benchmark datasets to explore their properties. The work also comprises the creation of new benchmark datasets, to enable characterization of properties of deep networks that are not covered by existing datasets. The overall goal is to develop new architectures for deep networks that can generalise to scaling variations that are not spanned by the training data, and which can achieve higher robustness to variabilities in test data, as well as enable more efficient training with lower requirements concerning the amount of training data. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 19th through July 6th, 2023 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. PhD on neural modelling of conscious perception

PhD position, University of Birmingham: Identifying the Role of Conscious Perception, a Neuroimaging and Computational Investigation Howard Bowman and Damian Cruse, School of Psychology, University of Birmingham are seeking applications for this PhD project, which is competition-funded under the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (supported by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council). In fact, a substantial part of the scientific study of consciousness has focused on showing how sophisticated subconscious processing can be, seemingly leaving little room for a "special" purpose for conscious experience. We have recently presented evidence that the subconscious brain is limited in its capacity to represent episodic information (Avilés, Bowman & Wyble, 2020; Bowman & Avilés, In Press; Bowman et al, 2014). We now have extensive behavioural evidence for this hypothesis. We are thus at a perfect stage to 1) characterise the neural correlates (with fMRI, MEG or EEG) that support this formation of episodic memories, and 2) explain these findings with the Simultaneous Type/ Serial Token (STST) model (Bowman & Wyble, 2007), a neural network model of temporal attention. We are proposing a PhD to work on one or both of these topics. Call for community review: The Essential Metadata for 3D BRAIN Microscopy metadata standards (3D-MMS)

*INCF seeks community feedback on the 3D Microscopy Metadata Standard (3D-MMS)* Recent advances in fluorescence microscopy techniques and tissue clearing, labeling, and staining provide unprecedented opportunities to investigate brain structure and function, and to catalog brain cell types and define their location, morphology, and connectivity in a native context. It is essential to establish and adopt standards for annotating, reporting, and formatting imaging datasets so that other researchers can understand, reuse, and integrate microscopy data. The Essential Metadata for 3D BRAIN Microscopy metadata standards (3D-MMS) were built on existing efforts and developed with input from the brain microscopy community to promote adoption. The metadata standards include 91 fields organized into seven categories: Contributors, Funders, Publication, Instrument, Dataset, Specimen, and Image. Each metadata field is specified by a name, definition, a list of allowable values, whether it is required, and the number of times it can be repeated for a dataset. These metadata standards were developed by the BRAIN 3D Microscopy Working Group, and are being implemented within the Brain Image Library, the designated repository to accept and make microscopy data publicly available for investigators funded by the US BRAIN Initiative. Postdoc on Brain network mechanisms underlying spatial cognition

Postdoc position (m/w/d): Brain network mechanisms underlying spatial cognition A postdoc position is available at the Department of Computational Neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics to work with Dr. Oxana Eschenko on brain network mechanisms underlying spatial cognition. This project is a follow up study (Yang; https://www.jneurosci.org/content/jneuro/39/3/434.full.pdf; Mei; http://learnmem.cshlp.org/content/25/3/129) aiming at understanding the role of two thalamic nuclei – the nucleus reuniens and mediodorsal nucleus - within a large-scale brain network underlying spatial cognition. The involvement of both thalamic nuclei in spatial cognition can be inferred from anatomical connectivity and neuropharmacology, while neurophysiological mechanisms of the spatial network dynamics remain poorly understood. We hypothesize that a functional coupling exists between the associative thalamic nuclei, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex and that this coupling enables successful spatial navigation and retrieval of spatial memory. To test this hypothesis, we recorded multi-site neural activity while rats learned a complex maze task, and plan to relate model-agnostic and model-dependent behavioral variables reflecting learning and decision-making to aspects of the extracellular neural signals, including spectral decomposition, coherence, cross-frequency and phase-amplitude analysis. Candidates should have strong computational and data science skills and proven experience in the analysis of behavior and neural signals. Proficiency in English is essential. The position is available from March 1, 2023 and will be for one year in the first instance, subject to a probationary period. An extension may be possible depending on performance. Remuneration is based on qualifications and professional experience in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund) plus various social benefits and additional pension provision. Postdoc in computational neuroscience at NYU

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar position in the Savin and Angelaki group in the Centre for Neural Science at NYU. The position is funded by a new NIH grant, and focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of spatial navigation using multi-area recordings in freely moving monkeys in the context of foraging tasks. Aspects of this problem include determining the mechanisms representing and updating beliefs about location of self and targets, through the lens of interaction between multiple cortical areas. A significant component of the work focuses on developing new statistical data analysis tools for understanding inter-area communication in the context of naturalistic behavior. This is a joint endeavor across the two lab, with weekly joint meetings and regular group interactions. More broadly, the postdoc will be part of a large and intellectually vibrant community of researchers from the Center for Neuroscience and the Centre for Data Science at NYU. The initial appointment is one year with the expectation of extension contingent on satisfactory progress. I am seeking candidates for a fully funded postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The successful candidate will conduct research in my computational laboratory (Department of Excellence for Neural Information Processing) at UKE ( https://www.uke.de/english/departments-institutes/institutes/department-of-…) in collaboration with my lab’s experimental collaborators, including prominently Prof. Christopher Harvey at Harvard Medical School, Prof. Tommaso Fellin at IIT Italy, and Prof. Mriganka Sur at MIT. We will investigate, by developing and using advanced data analysis methods and biophysically plausible neural network models, how populations of neurons (and of glia) in the brain encode information and use it to produce appropriate behaviors. We are particularly interested in discovering how correlations between neurons shape the encoding and transmission of information across areas of the cerebral cortex, and in understanding the theoretical principles of how to combine measures and perturbations of neural activity to probe causally the contributions of interactions between neurons to brain function. Our laboratory offers a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise in computational neuroscience, including both advanced neural analysis techniques and neural network modeling. The laboratory also offers a thriving, ambitious and well-funded research environment (including receiving funding from the NIH Brain Initiative, Simons Foundation, the European Union). PhD modelling brain learning

Our group at Ulster University are looking for a computational neuroscience PhD student for a project on “Discovering the rules of neural learning by computer simulations of brain biophysics and deep neural networks.” You will use multiscale computer simulations of electro-chemical signalling in neurons, synapses, and astrocytes to understand how the physical arrangement of different cell types affects brain learning. You can then use more abstract deep neural network models to study the circuit functions of these mechanisms for learning and memory. One putative option to help them are cortical prostheses. Such devices record images from our environment, encode this information into the 'language' of the brain, and stimulate neuron populations in the visual system for creating a corresponding percept. I-See2 (www.isee.uni-bremen.de) investigates new principles for building cortical prostheses in an international group with researchers from Canada, Switzerland and Germany. Your position will be at the heart of the project in Bremen, where computational methods are developed and data from our partner labs comes together. The deadline for expressions of interest is January 10. Full project descriptions need to be submitted by January 17. We are calling for open source software development project ideas with some sort of neuro connection - fixes or extensions to big/broadly applicable or small/niche tools used by neuroscience researchers, efforts and initiatives in the broad field of computational neuroscience. If your project supports or implements INCF endorsed standards or best practices <https://www.incf.org/resources/sbps>, we especially encourage you to apply. NB: There have been some changes to the program in recent years. These are the conditions for the 2023 program: - Flexibility in project lengths: a project can run for a duration of 10-22 weeks. The standard length is 12 weeks, but projects can be planned for a longer duration at the start, and they can be extended (by the org admin) on request during the program. - Choice of project time commitment: a project can be one of two sizes, either large (350 h) or medium (175 h). Google will want to us to apply with a good mix of large and medium project sizes. To fully take advantage of the unique features of SbS in terms of robustness and sparseness, dedicated hardware architectures are required. 4-year postdoc in “Insect-Inspired depth perception” at Edinburgh

A postdoctoral research associate position is available to undertake computational and physical modelling studies to translate insect visual depth perception to robot systems, under the direction of Professor Barbara Webb, in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The project will focus on newly discovered forms of retinal and receptor motion in the insect compound eye that could enable near-field high-resolution stereo vision. The key outcome would be the design of a compact, low power visual sensor, and associated processing algorithms, which is particularly suited to distinguish the 3D shape of small nearby objects. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with neurobiologists at the University of Sheffield. The position is available for 48 months starting in February 2023, and has a salary range of £35,333 - £42,155 per annum. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in a relevant area and a strong background in computational modelling, ideally of neural circuits for perception, with a track record of good journal publications. Within the Department, there is a group of colleagues who are dedicated to the teaching and research of artificial intelligence and robotics. You will join this group and be expected to play a key role in delivering both teaching and research. The Department has recently approved a new masters course in artificial intelligence (MSc AI) and you will be directly involved in the teaching of this. MSc AI forms the foundation of the teaching within the artificial intelligence group, and it has been designed to cover a wide spectrum of artificial intelligence topics. Prior teaching experience is essential, and you will be expected to develop exciting and engaging teaching materials, deliver lectures and tutorials in a vibrant manner and assess students. In addition, you will join the Smart Interactive Technologies (SIT) research laboratory, a vibrant interdisciplinary group, led by Prof. Alessandro Di Nuovo, that has a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. The research laboratory is partner of Sheffield Robotics, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, which is one of the leading international groups in intelligent systems and robotics and which has received considerable investment in equipment as well as in facilities and staff at both Universities, including state-of-the-art robotics equipment such as the iCub, the Care-o-bot 4, and the Fetch Mobile Manipulator, plus many other robotic platforms like the humanoids Tiago, Pepper and NAO. The position is part of the ERC Synergy Salamandra project that started in September 2021, together with Prof. Andras Simon (KI Sweden) and Prof. Dimitri Ryczko (U. Sherbrooke, Canada). Early concepts about episodic memory were based on the storage model, according to which experiential content is preserved in memory and later retrieved. Even though very few contemporary researchers would oppose this view of episodic memory as a generative process, it has not become the standard paradigm of empirical memory research. This is particularly true for studies of the neural correlates of episodic memory. Further hindering progress are large conceptual differences regarding episodic memory across different fields, such as neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology. Insects deal with such complex tasks robustly despite limited computational power because learning is an active process emerging from the interaction of evolved brains, bodies and behaviours. Funded PhD Scholarship in Developmental Neurorobotics at Sheffield Hallam University (UK)

About the Project This scholarship will support the PhD candidate to carry out frontier research in Developmental Neurorobotics, a combination of Neuromorphic Computing and Cognitive Developmental Robotics. The PhD candidate will work with the Professor Alessandro Di Nuovo and his team, who have been awarded funding by the EPSRC for his research in the field. We are looking for an outstanding student to work with the team of a new EPSRC project. The research will pioneer the new developmental neuromorphic paradigm, which will be a synergic combination that will go beyond the limitations of the individual paradigms: neuromorphic computing will provide efficient brain-like resources able to process a more accurate representation of the real world, meanwhile developmental robotics will deliver the missing learning mechanisms for complex applications of neuromorphic spiking neural networks. The short-term objective is to demonstrate feasibility and lay the foundation of a biologically plausible framework to simulate the human-like learning process of numerical and abstract cognition, a fundamental characteristic of human intelligence. The team long-term goal is to create an artificial mind for robots that 'grows up' like a child's brain. This will be underpinned by neuromorphic computing which emulates the deep-lying architecture of the brain and will allow it to interpret and adapt to situations. As well as enabling the creation of robots with a human-like ability to reason, behave and interact the creation of an artificial mind will boost research in life sciences disciplines such as neuroscience by allowing researchers to run biologically realistic simulations to test theories. By simulating information on the inner workings of the brain that could not otherwise be detected, it could enhance our understanding of neurodevelopmental and learning disorders and lead to new treatments. The positions are funded by a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation which is entitled “Why Spikes?”. This project aims at answering an almost 100 year old question in Neuroscience: “What are spikes good for?”. Indeed, since the discovery of action potentials by Lord Adrian in 1926, it has remained largely unknown what the benefits of spiking neurons are, when compared to analog neurons. Traditionally, it has been argued that spikes are good for long-distance communication or for temporally precise computation. However, there is no systematic study that quantitatively compares the communication as well as the computational benefits of spiking neuron w.r.t analog neurons. The aim of the project is to systematically quantify the benefits of spiking at various levels. The PhD students and post-doc will be supervised by Prof. Jean-Pascal Pfister (Theoretical Neuroscience Group, Department of Physiology, University of Bern). The PhD candidates (resp. post-doc candidate) should hold a Master (resp. PhD) degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience or a related field. She/he should have keen interests in developing theories that can be tested experimentally. Preference will be given to candidates with strong mathematical and programming skills. Postdoc position in modelling the effects of neuromodulation on balanced networks

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the Vidi project 'Top-down neuromodulation and bottom-up network computation, a computational study' and *study the effects of neuromodulators in balanced networks*. You will use cellular and behavioural data on the effects of dopamine, acetylcholine and serotonin in mouse barrel cortex gathered by our department over the past five years, to bridge the gap between single cell, network and behavioural effects. You will use the balanced network framework to study network activity under neuromodulation. In order to do this, you will develop a balanced network description of the barrel cortex, with realistic barrel cortex properties (see https://doi.org/10.1007/s12021-022-09576-5) Next, you will incorporate the cellular effects of dopamine, acetylcholine and serotonin that we have measured over the previous years (see https://doi.org/10.1093/gigascience/giy147 and https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.01.12.476007) into the network, and investigate their effects on overall network activity and behaviour. More particularly, through simulations and analytical derivations, you will research the effects of neuromodulators on the stability of the balanced state, synchrony, regularity and chaos. You will build on the single cell data, models and analysis methods available in our group, and your results will be incorporated into our group's further research to develop and validate machine learning and efficient coding models of (somatosensory) perception. PhD program in Systems/Computational/Cognitive neuroscience at U of Oregon

We are accepting applications to the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Graduate Program (INGP) <https://ion.uoregon.edu/training-programs/graduate-fellows> at the Institute of Neuroscience, a robust graduate training in Neuroscience across departments at the University of Oregon. The goal of INGP is to train students to think independently, creatively, and critically about problems in neuroscience. We aim to train students in a variety of skills that will prepare students for successful research, teaching, policy, or industry career. Students can enter INGP through the departments of biology, human physiology, psychology, mathematics, physics, computer and information science, and the Knight Campus, depending on their interests. The majority of our students enter through the department of biology, which allows students to complete three rotations during their first year, in order to help students identify a laboratory in which to do their dissertation research. Students who enter through psychology, physiology, and mathematics begin in their dissertation labs immediately. Regardless of how students enter INGP, they are provided with a set of mentors at the peer and faculty levels. All graduate students are required to teach for at least one academic year during their graduate career; at least a portion of this teaching takes place the first year. *Training Program* Students typically fall into a defined training program, however, training can be tailored to fit a student’s need and research interest.
