There is the possibility of personal scientific qualification (doctorate/post-doctoral thesis). The position is suitable for part-time work. At the Division of Psychological Methods and Statistics we develop and apply multivariate statistical modeling techniques and technologically advanced instrumentation for research in behavioral and health sciences. By means of these tools, applicable to modeling neurometric (EEG, DTI, fMRI, fNIRS) and psychometric data, collected within and outside the lab, we aim to understand individual differences and intraindividual fluctuations in typical and disordered sensory, cognitive and emotional processing and their behavioral outcomes across the lifespan – from neonatal age to late adulthood. Dear colleagues, We seek outstanding applicants who are interested in developing theoretical models to investigate fundamental questions in Computational and Theoretical Neuroscience. The selected candidates will be working on questions addressing how brain computations emerge from the dynamics of the underlying neural circuits and how the neural code is shaped by computational needs and biological constraints of the brain. To tackle these questions, we employ a multidisciplinary approach that combines state-of-the-art modeling techniques and theoretical frameworks, which include but are not limited to data-driven circuit models, biologically realistic deep learning models, abstract neural network models, machine learning methods, and analysis of the neural code. Our research team, the Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience Laboratory, is on the main UCLA campus and enjoys close collaborations with the world-class neuroscience community there. computational neuroscience postdoc position

A postdoctoral scientist position is available at the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI) for Psychiatric Research (https://www.nki.rfmh.org<https://www.nki.rfmh.org/>) to work on computational neuroscience research funded by recently awarded grants. Our NIH-funded project investigates the brain's dynamic circuit motifs underlying internal vs. external-oriented processes in the auditory and interconnected areas, using circuit modeling of the thalamocortical system. In this project, the postdoc will build data-driven biophysical models constrained by data collected from electrophysiology labs at NKI (Noelle O’Connell, Charlie Schroeder) & The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research (Stephan Bickel), and then use the models to predict optimal neuromodulation strategies testable in vivo. PhD position (deadline June 19th): Learning and Control with Spiking Neural Networks at the Donders Centre for Cognition

Are you interested in how our brain is able to so precisely control the body, and adapt to new situations? Would you like to dive deep into current theories for how this works, and develop new ones? Are you either highly interested in modelling the brain, and/or in applying the resulting theories to practical problems? Then this is a PhD position you should apply for. To successfully control the body our brain needs to generate stable states (i.e. keep a hand somewhere), but also full dynamic behaviours (i.e. a full arm swing). The brain does this highly efficiently through networks of spiking neurons - the efficiency and success of which is yet to be reproduced in AI. Crucially, neural activity during dynamic tasks is often observed to lie on lower-dimensional manifolds. Why this is useful, and how networks generate and adapt such activity manifolds, is the subject of many theoretical models but still very much an open question. In this NWO-funded 4-year PhD project, using tools from both AI and neuroscience, you will develop neural networks which produce such low-dimensional manifolds and then use these to learn efficient and effective control. This project is expected to yield more capable AI systems and further our understanding of brain computations. Dependent on your background and interests, the project can either go deep into applying the resulting models to AI control problems, or reproduce and predict neuroscience experiments. You will be supervised by Dr. Sander Keemink and Prof. Marcel van Gerven, and advised by Dr. Nasir Ahmad. The project is hosted at the AI department of the Donders institute, where there are additional opportunities to collaborate with experts in neuroscience, robotics, AI, and other related disciplines. *Dear all,* *We are delighted to announce that a half-day tutorial titled "Hands-on Tutorial on PyNN: A Simulator-Independent Language for Building Neuronal Network Models" will be held at the 32nd Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting (CNS*2023 conference) in Leipzig, Germany. We invite all registered participants to join the tutorial, which will take place on the first day of the meeting, 15 July 2023, just before the main event.* *Computational neuroscientists have developed a diversity of software platforms for simulating neural network models at different scales. However, each simulator has its own programming or configuration language, leading to considerable difficulty in porting models from one simulator to another. A common programming interface to multiple simulators would help to reduce or eliminate the problems of simulator diversity while retaining the benefits. The goal of DeepCoMechTome is to develop simulation-based machine learning tools that will make it possible to build neural network models that are both biologically realistic and computationally powerful. PhD position - Model-predictive control of brain plasticity for optimal non-invasive brain stimulation

About the Project Neuroplasticity is the mechanism that underpins the brain’s ability to learn or recover from traumatic events, but also its deterioration underlies several Neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses. It is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple processes occurring at different spatial and temporal scales (1, 2). The most commonly discussed type of plasticity is long-term potentiation (LTP) which is defined as an increase in efficacy between synapses of two neurons. Experiments designed to measure LTP are often done in cell slices or cultures using patch-clamp techniques. However, we often want to promote (and measure) plasticity in humans in-vivo but it is not clear how changes in synaptic efficacy manifest in macroscopic non-invasive imaging measurements such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), or electroencephalography (EEG) that are available for use in humans. This project aims to link our detailed cellular-level knowledge of plasticity processes with systems-level observations in humans and is focused on answering the following 2 questions: 1. How can we modulate plasticity non-invasively in the brain? 2. How can we measure plasticity in vivo? To answer these questions you will combine mathematical/computational modelling of biophysically realistic large-scale neural networks that exhibit plasticity with cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to test the model predictions. The model will be adapted so that its output can be compared to the three major imaging techniques described above and you will determine how changes in connectivity between and within brain regions in the model predict changes in our imaging metrics. There will be a particular focus on developing an EEG marker of plasticity as this currently does not exist. Finally, you will test the model predictions in an imaging study combining brain stimulation, EEG, MRI and MRS in a proof-of-concept experiment in humans. This will provide us with a deeper understanding of how to modulate and measure plasticity that can be deployed in the future for medical applications of brain stimulation such as in Parkinson’s disease, depression and pain control. Workshop abstract: The modeling of collective behavior within a neuronal population, initiated by the pioneering work of Wilson and Cowan, has been a great source of inspiration in the computational neuroscience community. Indeed, the focus on the overall neuronal activity of a brain structure, rather than on the detailed evolution of the electric response of single neurons, allows to adequately model a vast range of brain functions and opens the door to a mathematical understanding of the processes involved. Moreover, the spatio-temporal version of this model, known as neural fields, allows one to consider spatial heterogeneity within a cerebral structure, at the price of more demanding analysis tools. Neural fields have been used in the investigation of a wide range of applications, including the modeling of sensory cortices, cognition, human-robot interaction, self-organizing maps, visual hallucinations, and deep brain stimulation. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to our ongoing research endeavors to understand and model the complex and dynamic patterns of neuronal activity inspired by how the brain operates and solves tasks. Research Background: Our lab's research focuses on understanding how the brain alters its internal neuronal activity patterns that encode information across large neuronal ensembles to facilitate learning. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms underlying changes in network information processing related to learning a model of the external world. Given the inherent complexity, unreliability, and multidimensionality of neuronal activity patterns in the brain, this is a challenging endeavor. To better understand learning in the brain we employ in in vivo brain recording methods in mice (eg. mini-scopes) to characterise learning-induced changes in neuronal ensemble activity (RL in mice). Simultaneously, we develop biologically-inspired multi-layer (deep) artificial neuronal network models (ANNs) that mimic the information processing and storage capabilities observed in real biological networks (e.g. to solve an RL problem). We place significant emphasis on reverse-engineering neuronal network function at a very abstract level and on understanding the fundamental principles that determine learning-induced changes in neuronal networks (biological and artificial). Role Description: As a PhD or Postdoctoral fellow, you will be tasked with developing and implementing innovative bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Your role will involve close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of neuroscience and machine learning researchers at the Institute of Neuroinformatics and the ETH AI Center respectively. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Conduct/simulate RL experiments and analysis to test and refine these algorithms. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance our collective research goals. Present research findings at internal and external meetings and conferences. Contribute to the broader academic community through peer review and other service roles. Essential Qualifications: MSc or Ph.D. in Theoretical Neuroscience, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field (e.g. Physics). Significance: The cerebellum is a critical structure for movement. We have previously shown that it is central in controlling pathological activity in epilepsy (Kros et al., Annals of Neurology 2015) and essential tremor (Yousif et al., PloS Comput Biol, 2017). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been used for decades to treat tremor (Benabid et al, 1998) and more recently epilepsy (Zangiabadi et al., Frontiers Neurology, 2019). However, DBS is a highly invasive surgical technique targeting the thalamus, a structure inaccessible by non-invasive neurostimulation. Rigour: The project would involve, 1) a detailed biophysical computational model of the cerebellum, based on our previous work, but extended to involve connected structures such as the thalamus; 2) experiments with human participants involving non-invasive electrical stimulation of the cerebellum during normal movement tasks to inform, validate and test the model. Together, this will lead to theoretically based, novel stimulation paradigms for a closed-loop system. Potential Contribution to Knowledge: We propose that cerebellar stimulation could provide a method of replacing DBS and inhibiting pathological brain activity, and that a model based closed-loop system would provide an optimal approach. The successful candidate will work with the team on developing several stress, sleep, and physical activity algorithms based on data from the Healthy Brain Study (HBS). The HBS is a prospective longitudinal cohort study that utilizes careful digital phenotyping in 1000 healthy participants. HBS combines bio-sampling, neuro-imaging and ecological momentary assessments to carefully assess several physiological, cognitive, affective and behavioural outcomes in both the laboratory and in real life with wearables. The PhD student will work on integrating these algorithms in an existing open source application for wearables in collaboration with patients and staff members from Forensic Psychiatry that will provide tailored, personalized insights and can be implemented in treatment settings. The PhD student will also carefully design several single case experiments to assess the efficacy and value of the open source application in (forensic) psychiatric treatment. Hi All, In the name of the organizers, I'd like to announce the next edition of the EITN Fall School in Computational Neuroscience, in Paris in September 20-29, 2023. This school is intended for PhD students (although we do accept postdocs or Master students occasionally), and is structured in 4 scales of modeling: cellular, network, populations and whole-brain models. Each scale is associated with courses and tutorials on simulation tools such as Neuron, NEST, BRIAN, TVB, etc. The students form 4 groups to work on a modeling project, with the help of tutors. The course ends with the student presentations of the results obtained. This 10-day intensive course selects students on the basis of their excellence and need to follow this training. Multiple Openings for Post-Doc, Research Assistant and PhD student in Neuromorphic, In-memory computing IC design using SRAM/RRAM (application to LSTM/SNN for Keyword spotting) There are multiple openings for Post-doc, Research Assistant and PhD students for a new project on In-memory Computing in the group of Professor Arindam Basu, Department of Electrical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. The focus of the project will be on in-memory computing implementations of neuromorphic algorithms for the application of LSTM/SNN for Keyword spotting using SRAM with extension to RRAM. In particular, novel In-memory ADC for nonlinear functions will be designed to push the state of the art. The candidate should have experience in doing analog/mixed-signal IC design with preference for experience in memory design. For Post-doctoral positions, experience with IC tapeout and measurement is a must. Making the odorant world intelligible - How its semantics can be characterized

More fundamentally, the question arises how semantic information, often associated with subjective perception, can be characterized. To address this challenge, we leveraged the unique combinatorial odorant code of Drosophila and presented a formal treatment of the identity of an odorant object as its semantic information (or semantics for short). Grounded in the physiology of the fly brain, we identified the functional roles played by Local Neurons in the fruit fly Antennal Lobe in the recovery of the semantics and the onset/offset timing information (or semantic timing). Our model of the Antennal Lobe circuit is built with a highly versatile canonical model of neural computation - the differential Divisive Normalization Processor. Postdoc in cognitive computational neuroscience at Universitat Jaume I (Castelló, Spain)

Dear Colleagues, The Decision and Memory group(decisionandmemory.org) at the Universitat Jaume I in Castelló de la Plana, Spain seeks a motivated postdoctoral scholar to study the influence of long-term memory processes on creativity and social cognition using computational cognitive science and cognitive neuroscience methods(neuroimaging, behavior, and computational models). The position is expected to last 2 years and involves applying social and semantic network models to data from novel online behavioral and fMRI paradigms. Competitive applicants will have a PhD in cognitive science, experimental psychology, mathematical psychology, computational neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field. Applicants are ideally looking to build innovative careers in academia or big data analysis in industry. Postdoc candidates that have recently completed (or will complete) their PhD are particularly encouraged to apply, where they will have ample opportunity to be sponsored for regional, national, and European independent research fellowships. PhD in computational and systems neuroscience applied to Parkinson's Disease

The Neurobiology of Parkinson's Disease group from the Cajal Institute CSIC (Madrid) is seeking highly motivated Ph.D. candidates interested in developing a Doctoral Thesis in the field of Computational and Systems Neuroscience. The project will require the analyses of in-vivo electrophysiological, calcium imaging, and behavior recordings in mice models of Parkinson’s disease. CARLsim Spiking Neural Network Simulator Feedback Requested

Dear Colleagues, CARLsim is an efficient, easy-to-use, GPU-accelerated library for simulating spiking neural network (SNN) models with a high degree of biological detail. Originating in 2009, CARLsim is now on its 6th major release. CARLsim supports CPU and GPU simulations ranging from small networks to networks with hundreds of thousands of neurons with millions of synaptic connections. It is supported on Linux, MacOS, and Windows. The software framework is open-source and freely available. Postdoc positions in cognitive neuroscience and computational psychiatry, University of Tuebingen, Germany

**Apologies for cross-posting** Dear colleagues, We are looking to hire several new postdocs in the "Developmental Computational Psychiatry" lab and the newly established W3 professorship "Computational Psychiatry" led by Tobias Hauser at the University of Tübingen (Germany). The focus of the lab is to better understand the computational and neural mechanisms underlying decision making and learning, and how these processes go awry in patients with mental illnesses. Here the fundamental computation will be built on temporally sparse event codes to drastically reduce power requirements to be deployed on dedicated HW (expected about 10x-100x savings compared to other dedicated ASICs). Deep Noise Suppression is a ubiquitous real-time audio processing task with low power and imperceptible latency. A neuromorphic solution offering >10x lower power and smaller model sizes could extend battery lives, improve user experiences, and help shrink form factors of many PC/mobile/wearable devices. We are reiterating on the Microsoft Deep Noise suppression re-framing it into *Neuromorphic computing,* offering a novel neuromorphic baseline example improving on SI-SNR and reducing memory footprint by ~20x on previous MSFT DNS 2022 Challenge Baseline. The CIDBN Department "Physics of Biological Systems", headed by Prof. Fred Wolf, offers a fixed-term contract until June 30, 2025 with the perspective of an extension commensurate with building a competitive track record at the frontier of computational biophysics and neural circuit theory. Information is processed in brain circuits through the coordinated action of large-scale circuits of neurons and synapses. Ultimately, it is the nano-scale molecular architecture of neuronal synapses that can make or break the power of neural circuit computation. Progress in a broad suite of nanoscopy techniques is currently uncovering the molecular-level design of synapses subserving functions such as working memory or sensory coding. The spatio-temporal operation of these nano-machines and the efficiency of their design, however, remain to be understood and are core research aims of the Göttingen Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1286 "Quantitative Synaptology". We are inviting applications from theoretical biophysicists, molecular systems biologists, or computational scientists with an ambition to pioneer computational studies of synaptic functional design. We offer a stimulating environment of theoretical neuroscientists, neural data-scientists, and cutting-edge experimentalists associated with CRC 1286. Postdoc/PhD positions in Toulouse (France): Deep learning models of the Global Workspace

Multiple postdoctoral and PhD positions are available in an ERC-funded project exploring deep-learning implementations of the Global Workspace theory. We are seeking highly motivated and dedicated students and post-docs to join our group in Toulouse, France. Successful candidates will have formal training in AI, Computer Science or related fields (e.g. computational neuroscience), and a keen interest in cognitive neuroscience. Our ERC Advanced Grant "GLoW" aims to take inspiration from neuroscience and cognitive theories to build deep neural network models of cognition, capable of integrating or "grounding" information across sensory and linguistic modalities, and of displaying flexible cognitive behavior. We will also use advanced AI models to improve the decoding and understanding of brain activity. MBL Methods in Computational Neuroscience Course - Deadline March 31

Applications are open for the Methods in Computational Neurosciencecourse at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. The course will run from July 26 to August 23, 2023. Postdoctoral positions in sensory coding and memory - University of Sheffield

Why are brains the way they are? Do neural circuits function in an “optimal” way, and if so, in what sense are they optimal? How do brains encode sensory information and form associative memories? Andrew Lin's lab at the University of Sheffield is seeking postdoctoral research associates to study these fundamental questions in neuroscience in the olfactory system of the fruit fly Drosophila. We aim to discover neuronal plasticity mechanisms that underlie associative memory and the maintenance of optimal sensory coding, in the Drosophila mushroom body (the fly’s olfactory memory centre). Of special note to the comp-neuro email list, we are particularly looking for at least one of the postdocs we hire to have expertise in computational neuroscience. We seek to tie computational models of what plasticity rules would be ‘optimal’ for memory, with experiments testing whether the real brain actually uses these ‘optimal’ rules. This research will use a range of techniques including: in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology, fly genetics, behavioural experiments, computational modelling and building custom equipment. The exact project can be tailored to your background, but expertise in at least some of these techniques is essential, along with a PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent experience), excellent communication skills and an ability to work in a team. Postdoc in computational neuroscience/machine learning at the University of Nottingham (UK) - closes March 30th

The Humphries’ lab at the University of Nottingham is seeking a postdoc to study the neural basis of foraging, in collaboration with the groups of Matthew Apps (Birmingham) and Nathan Lepora (Bristol). Whether choosing to leave one shop for another, switching TV programs, or seeking berries to eat, humans and other animals make innumerable stay-or-leave decisions, but how we make them is not well understood. The goal of this project is to develop new computational accounts of stay-or-leave decisions, and use them to test hypotheses for how humans, primates, and rodents learn and make these decisions. The work will draw on and develop new reinforcement learning and accumulation (e.g. diffusion) models of decision-making.
