Postdoctoral position in Computational Neuroscience

The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego (https://www.bazhlab.ucsd.edu) is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learn from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation and reconsolidation during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects, such as developing “whole human brain” models based on dMRI data or applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence for continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python, PyTorch and/or Matlab is a plus. The University of California offers excellent benefits, and the salary will be based on research experience. The project aims to create the next-gen humanoid robots with efficient computation, high cognition and autonomy, by synergistically combining interdisciplinary research development in neurophysiology, psychology, machine intelligence, cognitive mechatronics, neuromorphic engineering, and humanoid robotics. The PRIMI project seeks to create more capable interactive robots with advanced abilities, able to provide innovative and personalised services. Prototypes will be used in stroke rehabilitation studies. Dear Colleagues, We are seeking a PostDoc with a quantitative background who has finished (or about to finish) a doctoral degree in a quantitative field preferably but not limited to physics. The candidate should show enthusiasm for tackling theoretical foundations of behavior. The PostDoc will join our interdisciplinary and international team studying social foraging in animal groups. The researcher will be based in the integrative biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, located in Konstanz, Germany. The integrative biophysics group led by Dr. Ahmed Elhady is focused on theoretical and computational understanding of mechanisms underlying foraging. The group has an extensive network of local and international collaborators. Through those collaborations, the PostDoc researcher will have access to a large number of data sets depicting foraging behaviors in locusts, rodents, non-human primates (marmosets) and human performing similar social foraging tasks. The PostDoc project can potentially address the following questions: 1. What are the quantitative foraging decision strategies employed by a particular animal species during social foraging? 2. How does those decision strategies compare across animal species in a quantitative evolutionary manner? 3. How did evolutionary processes quantitatively shape foraging behaviours? 4. Postdoc position in light-field imaging

Postdoc position in the development of light field imaging technologies for recording neural activity The Goodhill lab at Washington University in St Louis is looking for a postdoc scientist for an NIH-funded project to develop novel microscopy methods for whole-brain calcium imaging in freely-behaving zebrafish. The ideal candidate will be experienced in building new optical imaging technologies, and interested in leveraging these skills to help push the frontiers of neural recording across large numbers of neurons simultaneously. Prior experience in neuroscience is not essential. The lab focuses on the computational principles underlying the development of neural circuits and behavior. The goal of this project is to construct light-field imaging techniques to record the activity of ~100,000 neurons in the larval zebrafish brain during unconstrained hunting behavior. This is a collaboration with Oliver Cossairt at Northwestern University and Florian Willomitzer at the University of Arizona, and you will be working with students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including biology, mathematics, physics and engineering. You will carry out rigorous neuronal and behavioral analyses within the confines of automatized closed-loop tasks tailored for visual navigation. This will involve the application of advanced tools for dense behavioral quantification, including multi-angle videography, inertial motion sensing, and egocentric recording with head-mounted cameras for the reconstruction of retinal input. Our aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the immediate and sustained multi-area neuronal representation of visual landmarks during unrestricted behavior. We aim to elucidate the mechanisms through which stable visual landmarks are encoded and the processes by which these representations are stabilized to facilitate robust allocentric navigation. Ideal candidates for this position should hold a doctorate in neuroscience, engineering, physics, or a related discipline, and should be deeply committed to rigorous neuroethology and technical development. We seek individuals with a "tinkering spirit", i.e., a strong penchant for problem-solving and creativity. Essential competencies include the demonstrated ability to design and carry out complex neuroscience experiments, robust programming capabilities, and a foundational knowledge of machine learning methodologies. Valuable experience would include a familiarity with rodent behavior, both in freely moving and head-fixed contexts. This kind of learning often occurs when a child interacts with an adult teacher to learn language meanings about events that they experience together. Multiple types of self-organizing brain processes are involved in learning language meanings, including processes that control conscious visual perception, joint attention, object learning and conscious recognition, cognitive working memory, cognitive planning, emotion, cognitive-emotional interactions, volition, and goal-oriented actions. The article shows how all of these brain processes interact to enable learning of language meanings to occur. The article also contrasts these human capabilities with AI models like ChatGPT. The Voigts Lab at HHMI Janelia Research Campus is recruiting postdocs to work on how neocortex learns and applies models of the world to enable complex cognitive abilities. We will study flexible cognition by examining naturalistic behaviors that require animals to perform sequential computations, yet are learned quickly. We'll be able to throw whatever technology is needed at the problem of combining sufficient measurements with complex naturalistic behavior in mice, e.g. large-scale electrophysiology or calcium imaging, unrestrained behavior in large complex environments, closed-loop manipulations, circuit reconstruction, etc., but more importantly we'll work on the challenge of modeling, analyzing, and ultimately learning from data when there are no strictly repeated trials to average over. The postdoc position could focus on experimental and/or computational approaches to these questions, depending on the interests and experience of the candidate. We're part of the new Mechanistic Cognitive Neuroscience research area at Janelia. Postdocs will have access to an unusual amount of resources and support, allowing us to make rapid progress on these challenging questions. In the wake of the emergence of large-scale language models such as ChatGPT, the BrainGPT project is at the forefront of research in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Neuroscience. These models, although remarkably powerful, do not reflect the way in which our brains process and learn language. BrainGPT is rising to the challenge by focusing on the development of models that are more faithful to human cognitive functioning, inspired by data on brain activity during listening or reading. The ambition is to create more efficient models that are less dependent on intensive calculations and massive volumes of data. BrainGPT will open up new perspectives on our understanding of language and cognition. # Project and Work description The rapid rise in performance of language models, as demonstrated by the recent appeal of ChatGPT, is undeniable. However, the computational cost and environmental impact associated with such models are often overlooked [1]. These models rely on Transformers [2], which facilitate unsupervised learning on a large volume of data. These same models are used to predict brain activity from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), an application our team also exploits [3]. The main ambition of the BrainGPT project is to combine the explainability of mechanistic models with the predictive power of Transformers to analyze brain imaging data. Today, on the one hand we have explanatory but less predictive mechanistic models, such as those based on Reservoir Computing, and on the other hand, high-performance predictive models, but not explanatory, like Transformers. Our goal is to combine the best of these two approaches, to develop more efficient ("sample efficient") models inspired by Transformers, which more faithfully reflect the how the brain works, while improving the predictive power of mechanistic models. Towards this ambition, the BrainGPT project seeks to identify the key mechanisms that allow Transformers to predict brain activity. Furthermore, our project strives to build models that are more biologically plausible than Transformers, incorporating the most relevant components for predicting brain activity, while integrating constraints derived from human cognition studies. The long-term objectives of the BrainGPT project are as follows: - Making Transformers more biologically plausible, which could improve the prediction of brain activity by imaging (fMRI, MEG, etc.). - Proposing new perspectives and computing paradigms that do not rely exclusively on gradient backpropagation, given its high computational and energy cost. - Reducing the energy footprint of Transformers by minimizing the computational costs associated with their learning. In summary, the thesis will mainly consist of developing new bio-inspired models inspired by the mechanisms, learning methods, and emerging behaviors of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Transformers. *About the Job* Dr. Ziad Nahas (Interventional Psychiatry Lab) in the University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral position to conduct and analyze the effects of neuromodulation on brain activity in mood disorders. Candidates should be passionate about advancing knowledge in the area of translational research of depressive disorders and other mental health conditions with a focus on invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation treatments. PhD position at the TU Delft at the crossroads of machine learning and hardware design

Dear colleagues, We are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate with a background in machine learning and/or in electrical engineering for a project at the TU Delft at the crossroads of machine learning and hardware design. Building autonomous agents that can reliably compute and take decisions in noisy and uncontrolled environments is among the top research areas in today's artificial intelligence (AI). Yet, doing so within constrained power budgets for battery-operated edge devices is currently an open challenge. Indeed, while current cutting-edge deep-learning approaches can now reach acceptable performance in such environments, they are still subject to adversarial attacks and need a backend of GPU clusters, thereby requiring 4 to 6 orders of magnitude more power than is allowed for by the edge power budgets. On both ends of the spectrum of learning algorithms are the error backpropagation algorithm, i.e. the workhorse of modern deep learning, and local Hebbian learning rules, which are inspired by the brain's synaptic plasticity mechanisms. The former offers excellent performance but its energy/memory footprint is incompatible with low-power edge devices, while the latter allows for low-cost hardware implementations but can hardly be deployed beyond toy problems. In this PhD project, you will tackle this challenge by: * developing a theoretical framework that will allow exploring and generating, in a use-case-driven fashion, emerging learning algorithms that combine the strengths of local brain-inspired learning and backprop, * with a hardware/algorithm co-design approach, developing custom neuromorphic silicon prototypes (digital, then mixed-signal) for the proposed learning rules * investigating the deployment of these adaptive prototypes in resource-constrained use cases at the edge, such as brain implants for seizure detection. The OpenScope program, supported by the NIH BRAIN grant U24NS113646, provides the neuroscience community access to the Allen Brain Observatories. The program was inspired by astronomical observatories, which allow a community of scientists to access platforms too large or expensive for most laboratories. Through OpenScope, anyone can propose experiments for Allen Institute staff to run on Allen Institute pipelines. If selected, the proposed experiments are performed with the Allen Institute's verified, reproducible, and open protocols for cutting-edge behavioral training, in vivo Neuropixels electrophysiology, or two-photon calcium imaging. Data produced from the experiments is then shared with applicants, and, eventually, the broader community. How to apply? The program uses a double-blinded proposal review. We study the principles of neuronal circuit organization and brain dynamics. Our work focuses on unraveling the fascinating mysteries of how the brain generates internal states and how neuromodulators, such as dopamine and serotonin, influence neuronal activity and communication between brain regions during behavior. To achieve our goals, we perform large-scale recordings from thousands of neurons simultaneously using multimodal recordings, including electrophysiological or optical imaging approaches. We employ state-of-the-art techniques, including behavioral, optogenetic, imaging, electrophysiological, and genetic approaches in mice to record and manipulate the brain activity during behavior. Postdoc position Cluster for advanced study of collective behavior at University of Konstanz

Dear Colleagues, We are seeking a PostDoc with a quantitative background who has finished (or about to finish) a doctoral degree in a quantitative field preferably but not limited to physics. The candidate should show enthusiasm for tackling theoretical foundations of behavior. The PostDoc will join our interdisciplinary and international team studying social foraging in animal groups. The researcher will be based in the integrative biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, located in Konstanz, Germany. The integrative biophysics group led by Dr. Ahmed Elhady is focused on theoretical and computational understanding of mechanisms underlying foraging. The group has an extensive network of local and international collaborators. Through those collaborations, the PostDoc researcher will have access to a large number of data sets depicting foraging behaviors in locusts, rodents, non-human primates (marmosets) and human performing similar social foraging tasks. You can find details and registration info here: https://open.win.ox.ac.uk/pages/fslcourse/website/ To strike a balance between broad accessibility and the benefits of in-person interaction, the FSL Course intends to follow an approximately alternating pattern of fully in-person and fully online courses. The only option to attend the course in 2023 will be this online course. Both new and existing users of FSL are welcome on the course, as it aims to cover both basic and more advanced features of FSL. The course covers the theory and practice of functional, structural, diffusion and resting state brain image analysis, with recorded lectures and live practical sessions where attendees learn how to carry out analysis for themselves on real data, with access to experienced tutors available throughout each session. To accommodate different time zones, there will be two parallel courses repeating the same content. Each session will consist of a self-paced practical, with guidance available from our expert tutors via Zoom (or equivalent), and all FSL software and course data pre-installed and ready to go on a cloud-enabled virtual desktop. All lectures will be pre-recorded and available as video podcasts, and speakers will be available for questions and discussions. Computational Neuroscience Postdoc Positions

Postdoctoral scientist positions are available at the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI) for Psychiatric Research (https://www.nki.rfmh.org<https://www.nki.rfmh.org/>) to work on computational neuroscience research funded by recently awarded NIH and DoD grants. Our NIH-funded projects investigate the brain's dynamic circuit motifs underlying internal vs. external-oriented processes in the auditory and interconnected areas, using circuit modeling of the thalamocortical system. In this project, the postdoc will build data-driven biophysical models constrained by data collected from electrophysiology labs at NKI and Columbia (Noelle O’Connell, Charlie Schroeder, Dan Javitt) & The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research (Stephan Bickel), and then use the models to predict optimal neuromodulation strategies for inducing/suppressing circuit patterns, testable in vivo. Related projects include investigating the origin of electrophysiology patterns observed in the auditory system of animal models of schizophrenia (biomarkers including mismatch negativity and altered oscillatory patterns), and using modeling to predict their circuit-level origins and potential treatments. CALL FOR PAPERS Paper Submission Deadline: August 1, 2023 IV LATIN AMERICAN WORKSHOP ON COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE (LAWCN) November 28-30, 2023 Institution University of Envigado, Envigado, Colombia. www.lawcn.co Contact: lawcn(a)iue.edu.co Overview The IV Latin-American Workshop on Computational Neuroscience (LAWCN 2023) provides an international forum to bring students, academic researchers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds to present cutting-edge research on four major topics: Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience, Neuroengineering, and Artificial Intelligence. Since the first edition, LAWCN has contributed to revealing knowledge about the brain in an enthusiastic atmosphere for sharing ideas, creating networks, and fostering collaboration among Latin countries and the world. The current edition is organized by the research group "Grupo de Investigación Tecnologías Emergentes Sostenibles e Inteligentes GITESI" from the Engineering Faculty of the Institution University of Envigado (IUE), in collaboration with the Colegio Colombiano de Neurociencias (COLNE), the most representative association of neuroscience researchers and students in Colombia. The workshop will take place in the city of Envigado (Antioquia - Colombia) from November 28 to 30, 2023. This is the first LAWCN edition outside of Brazil, expanding its presence to Latin America, seeking for enhancing the collaboration network among the countries of our region but keeping the worldwide approach. Envigado is in the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, close to Medellín, the second-largest city in Colombia, and the capital of the department of Antioquia. Envigado is known for maintaining the traditions of the Paisa Region and for its architecture. It also has one of the highest standards of living in Colombia. Also, Envigado was recognized recently as one of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (UNESCO GNLC). In keeping with the tradition of the previous edition of this meeting, the IV LAWCN has four main topics: A- Computational Neuroscience B- Neuroscience C- Neuroengineering D- Artificial intelligence and related topics. Prospective authors are invited to contribute to the conference by electronically submitting papers in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, according to the model found on the event website. Historically, various forms of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have been suggested as simplified models of the cortex. Recently, owing to remarkable advancements in the field of machine learning, RNNs' inherent ability to capture temporal dependencies has been leveraged to develop tools for approximating unknown dynamical systems directly by training on observed time-series data. Concurrently, improvements in electrophysiological recording techniques have enabled the simultaneous recording of hundreds of neurons in animals performing complex behavioral tasks. These parallel developments present a unique opportunity to characterize comprehensively population dynamics and parametrize the neuronal manifold, thereby constructing functional models of cognitive functions. The objective of this research project is to further refine RNN-based algorithms, tailoring them to investigate neuronal dynamics, and applying them to experimental data. Research team and environment The Ph.D. student will carry out his/her studies at the BioRobotics Institute of Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies. The project will expose the student to a highly interdisciplinary context, in tight collaboration with theoretical and experimental neuroscientists. At the BioRobotics Institute, the research groups involved will be the Brain Dynamics Lab, the Computational Neuroengineering Lab, and the Bioelectronics and Bioengineering Area. During the second year of the Ph.D., the student might be able to spend a period abroad. The position holder will be a member of the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence - hessian.AI ( https://hessian.ai/) and provides research at the Center and will also be a member of the Centre for Cognitive Science ( https://www.cogsci.tu-darmstadt.de/) We are looking for an outstanding scientist who will represent the topic area of Computational Cognitive Science in research and teaching. The scientific focus of the position is on the computational and algorithmic modeling of behavioral data to understand the human mind. Exemplary research topics include, but are not limited to: + computational level models of perception, cognition, decision making, action, and learning as well as extended behavior and social interactions in humans, + algorithmic models that are able to simulate, predict, and explain human behavior, + model-driven behavioral research on human cognition. Successful candidates should demonstrate an outstanding scientific profile, with high-impact research contributions in the area of computational modeling of human behavior. A research profile that is able to interact with current developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence is desired. Candidates are expected to teach these topics in our undergraduate as well as graduate-level programs in Cognitive Science. Furthermore, a proven track record of successful collaboration in international research teams, with industry, or across research disciplines is a plus. The professorship is expected to strengthen the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence and TU Darmstadt’s Human Science department’s research focus on Cognitive Science, which belongs to one of the three distinguished research fields of Technical University of Darmstadt (Information + Intelligence). The current faculty at both the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence and the Centre for Cognitive Science maintain numerous vibrant collaborations and are jointly involved in several cluster projects, including “The third Wave of AI” and “The Adaptive Mind”. Depending on the candidate’s profile there is the opportunity to participate in joint research projects currently running at TU Darmstadt. CARLsim 6.1 Spiking Neural Network Simulator Release Introduces Axonal Plasticity

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the 6.1 release of CARLsim. CARLsim is an efficient, easy-to-use, GPU-accelerated library for simulating large-scale spiking neural network (SNN) models with a high degree of biological detail. CARLsim allows execution of networks of Izhikevich spiking neurons with realistic synaptic dynamics on both generic x86 CPUs and standard off-the-shelf GPUs. The simulator provides a PyNN-like programming interface in C/C++, which allows for details and parameters to be specified at the synapse, neuron, and network level. CARLsim, which is in its 6th major iteration, is open-source and publicly available. With the release of CARLsim 6.1, we introduce axonal plasticity to simulate the biological phenomenon of experience dependent plasticity to the conductance velocity of axonal signaling. Axonal plasticity appears to be important for synchronization, skill learning, and many other potential applications. Meijer, Bastian Pietras, and I will offer at the first day of CNS 2023: "T09 - Applied Dynamical Systems Methods in Neuroscience''. In this tutorial, we will explain basic dynamical systems concepts and analysis methods at the example of single neurons, neural networks, and mean-field equations of neural networks. The main goals of the tutorial are (i) to provide the audience with an intuition of how neural systems can be studied via mathematical models and dynamical systems concepts, (ii) to explain how we can analyze parameter dependencies of these mathematical models via parameter continuation and bifurcation analysis, and (iii) to provide numerical recipes, and software solutions to carry out these analysis methods. These labs study a range of biological and artificial neural networks using population recording techniques, analytic approaches, and computational modelling. Tutorial CNS 2023, T11: Simulation of spiking and BOLD signals using the ANNarchy simulator

Dear colleagues, we would like to draw your attention to the hands-on tutorial entitled "T11: Simulation of spiking and BOLD signals using the ANNarchy simulator” of the upcoming CNS conference held in Leipzig ( https://www.cnsorg.org/cns-2023) The tutorial will take place on Saturday, July 15th in the afternoon session. The ANNarchy neuro-simulator targets the efficient simulation of rate-coded and spiking models on shared memory systems (multi-core, GPU). This tutorial will first introduce the definition of spiking neural networks in ANNarchy through its equation-oriented interface. The tutorial can be done on your laptops using the provided Jupyter notebooks or remotely on colab. The second part will demonstrate how to record BOLD signals from a spiking simulation using various balloon models and optimize the underlying hyperparameters. Dear all, The Computational Cognitive Neuroscience lab <https://hebartlab.com> of Martin Hebart is looking for two postdocs (initially for two years, with a possibility for an extension), who work in Computational Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field. The positions are part of the LOEWE Start Professorship of Martin Hebart, as well as the ERC Starting Grant COREDIM "Uncovering the core dimensions of visual object representations". Our lab aims at uncovering fundamental principles of visual and semantic processing in the human brain, with a focus on the visual system. To this end, we have access to a wide range of exciting large-scale datasets, including (1) human neuroimaging, human and macaque neurophysiological, and behavioral datasets as part of the THINGS initiative ( https://things-initiative.org) as well as (2) recent densely-sampled ultrahigh field functional and structural MRI data to reveal the relationship between the fine-grained cortical anatomy, the human structural connectome, and brain function in occipitotemporal cortex. The exact implementation of the projects is flexible but should be tied to the overall goals of the projects. The project of postdoc position 1 should be focused on using and ideally integrating the diverse datasets acquired as part of the THINGS initiative, including the possibility of developing or testing computational models of vision and language. The project of postdoc position 2 should be focused either on the functional neuroanatomy of the human visual system or on the relationship between visual and semantic features in occipitotemporal cortex. The positions are located at University of Giessen, with close collaboration with the Max Planck Institute of Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. Workshop on neuronal optimality and trade-offs at CNS*2023

Dear all, Join us at CNS*2023 in Leipzig on July 18th and 19th for the workshop W06: Optimality, evolutionary trade-offs, Pareto theory and degeneracy in neuronal modelling<https://www.treestoolbox.org/CNS2023_pareto_workshop/program.html>. Nervous systems, like any evolved structure, encounter unavoidable trade-offs between multiple tasks. They must fulfil their fundamental computational functions whilst consuming as little energy as possible and remaining robust to potential environmental changes. These tasks are often in direct opposition to one another, and a general quantification of the relative importance of individual optimisation targets is non-trivial. The problem is complicated by the degeneracy seen across neurons and circuits, where multiple different combinations of components can lead to similar functional behaviours. Pareto optimality might provide a useful framework to analyse neurobiological systems from biophysically detailed cells to large-scale network structures that combine high-dimensional parameter spaces with high-dimensional objective spaces. Pareto, or multi-objective, optimality can, for example, help to identify geometrically simple subspaces of neuronal models that cannot be improved upon for all relevant objectives. This workshop aims to discuss applications of Pareto optimality to the trade-offs encountered by diverse nervous systems. The talks and discussions will also address the trade-off between functional effectiveness and energetic efficiency and the concept of metabolically efficient information processing. Announcing the fourth Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight!

Dear Comp-Neuro mailing list members, We are pleased to announce the fourth edition of the Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight (CCNS) <https://www.crowdcast.io/c/ccnsv4> will take place this fall, October 5 and 6. The meeting will once again take place entirely virtually using the Crowdcast platform, and parlay the savings from this virtual setting into no registration fees for attendees. CCNS was created in the immediate aftermath of the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, which caused the cancellation of multiple conferences within the Canadian neuroscience community. As one of the first brand-new meetings created with the virtual space in mind <https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1008…>, CCNS distinguished itself by exploiting the online setting to engage an international audience, increase content accessibility through no registration fees and permanently available replays, and place an added spotlight on trainee contributions. *Dear all,* *We are delighted to announce that a half-day tutorial titled "Hands-on Tutorial on PyNN: A Simulator-Independent Language for Building Neuronal Network Models" will be held at the 32nd Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting (CNS*2023 conference) in Leipzig, Germany. We invite all registered participants to join the tutorial, which will take place on the first day of the meeting, 15 July 2023, just before the main event.* *Computational neuroscientists have developed a diversity of software platforms for simulating neural network models at different scales. However, each simulator has its own programming or configuration language, leading to considerable difficulty in porting models from one simulator to another. A common programming interface to multiple simulators would help to reduce or eliminate the problems of simulator diversity while retaining the benefits. The aim of the project is to develop computational models of spatial cognition in humans (e.g., for depth/motion perception or navigation). These models will be evaluated with respect to biological data (their responses will be compared to those observed in neural recordings and/or in behavioural experiments). The candidates should be willing to work in an international environment which involves Singapore and France, have a good level in English, very good programming skills and be interested in neurobiology. Some knowledge in neurosciences/ cognitive sciences would be a plus. The research will mainly take place in Toulouse, a student city (Toulouse is the second university hub in France) with high quality of life located in the south west of France (close to the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean Sea and the Spanish border). The position will start on Nov 1st, 2023 on the following research project: **Early vision function in silico networks of LIF neurons** One approach to understanding implications of the initial stages of visual processing is ideal observer analysis, which evaluates the information available to support psychophysical discriminations at various stages of the early visual representation. Computational approaches primarily rely on simple generative models, which do not take into account the distinctive properties of individual elementary channels, as well as the active nature of the input sensory pattern. Accordingly, many details remain underrated, as well as their implications on functional vision not fully understood. The project's goal is to develop an “artificial observer” composed of an active event-based camera feeding a neuromorphic multi-layer network of leaky integrate and fire (LIF) neurons. The system should provide the inference engines for relating visual representations to performance on perceptual judgement tasks. Multiple and varying parameters captured under complex, real-life conditions should be comparatively assessed in silicon and human observers. The research will be conducted at the Bioengineering/PSPC labs of DIBRIS. NEURON, NetPyne, and TREES at OCNS 2023 in Leipzig

NEURON is a simulator for neurons and networks of neurons with strong support for morphologically detailed models. TREES is a toolbox for working with morphologies, and NetPyNE is an abstraction layer on top of NEURON to facilitate the specification of large network models. Digital SWC Reconstructions Describing Neuron Morphology (SWC) SWC files (file extension of .swc) are text-based (ASCII text) files that describe three-dimensional neuronal or glial morphology. These digital reconstructions represent morphology as a vectorized tree structure, made of a series of connected nodes. An SWC file contains a series of text-based rows where each neuron node is described by a single row of only seven space-separated values. The format is simple and intuitive; a parser of or writer to the format could be implemented by anyone with knowledge of any programming language. With an open archive and freely available structure editor, the SWC system facilitates community-wide pooling of data for building biophysically realistic neuronal models and studying the morphological variation between neurons, contributing to a greater neuroscientific cooperation and openness. SPARC Data Structure Financially backed by the NIH Common Fund, SPARC is a large-scale project which aims to deepen our knowledge of nerve-organ interactions. This data structure has proven capable of handling complex datasets from multiple and heterogeneous species, measurement techniques, and spatial scales. One of the primary purposes of SDS is to increase the integrity of scientific research by promoting FAIR and open science practices, particularly by facilitating the generation of well-annotated, organized, standardized, and shared biomedical datasets. The position is funded by New York State (NYS) Department of Health (DOH) Spinal Cord Injury Research program. The project aims to improve brain-machine interface decoders by combining multiscale modeling of motor cortex circuits, analysis of low-dimensional neural manifolds associated with behavior, and realistic simulation of EEG signals. In OST HMDs the direct view of the world is mostly preserved and there is no perspective conversion in viewpoint and field of view, as with video see-through (VST) systems. This aspect confers a clear advantage over VST solutions, particularly when used to interact with close objects. Although there have been significant improvements to performance and comfort of OST HMDs, limitations associated with human perception still remain to be addressed. In order to provide the user with a realistic, natural and comfortable visual experience, a thorough and accurate knowledge of eye characteristics and HMD geometry must be assumed. These quantities are usually calibrated on a per-device and per-user basis, or modeled from scientific literature. A deviation of the actual values from the expected ones can result in incorrect camera placement, spatial distortions and non-uniformities, thus triggering discomfort in VR/AR. The goal of this research project is to develop methods and techniques to assess and mitigate discomfort and perceptual inconsistencies between real and augmented visual content in OST HMDs. A joint experimental and modeling approach will be followed in order to: 1. investigate methods to evaluate different sources of discomfort/mismatch; 2. develop subjective and objective methods to quantify the originated discomfort; 3. investigate strategies to mitigate the sources of discomfort/mismatch in AR/VR devices. *Requirements:* Applicants are expected to: 1) have a keen interest in Vision Science and in Augmented Reality, 2) have good programming skills in at least one language (Matlab, C/C++, Python, C#), 3) work well in group problem solving situations, 4) have intermediate communication skills (oral and written) in English or better. Postdoctoral position Lyon

A post-doctoral position is open in computational neurosciences at the Neurobiology of Executive Function lab at the Stem Brain Research Institute in Lyon (https://www.sbri.fr/).The research project aims to understand the neural mechanisms of learning during decision making. The project includes the development of a biophysical model of neuronal networks and neural mass models [1] for decision making and adaptive behaviour. The model will be developed in synergy with data analyses of monkeys electrophysiology data during task performances [2]. The successful candidate will be part of a team with experts in computational/theoretical neurosciences and will benefit from the availability of state of the art recordings at SBRI [2] and, more in general, of the rich neuroscience environment in Lyon. We welcome applicants with diverse scientific backgrounds, including, neuroscience, mathematics, physics, and engineering.
