Postdoc position in sleep modeling/analysis

POSTDOC POSITION IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. An NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. A postdoc position is available in the Goodhill lab to contribute to the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong are recording from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab is analyzing the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and using these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in analyzing sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. The lab both performs its own behavioral and neural imaging experiments with larval zebrafish, and collaborates on the analysis of data generated elsewhere. UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. Announcing the Rich Lab at the University of Connecticut: Open graduate and postdoc positions

The lab will use diverse tools from computational neuroscience to study how neuronal diversity drives physiologically relevant brain function in neuronal circuits, and how disruptions to this diversity might contribute to various neuropathologies. The MAIN MEETING is single-track. A set of invited talks is selected by the Executive Committee, and additional talks and posters are selected by the Program Committee, based on submitted abstracts. The WORKSHOPS feature in-depth discussion of current topics of interest, in a small group setting. All abstract submissions will be reviewed double blind. The deadline for Abstract submission will be 19 November 2023. Cosyne topics include but are not limited to: neural basis of behavior, sensory and motor systems, circuitry, learning, neural coding, natural scene statistics, dendritic computation, neural basis of persistent activity, nonlinear receptive field mapping, representations of time and sequence, reward systems, decision-making, synaptic plasticity, map formation and plasticity, population coding, attention, neuromodulation, and computation with spiking networks. Postdoctoral position in Computational Neuroscience to study plasticity and learning in olfactory system

The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study mechanisms of plasticity and learning in the insect olfactory system. This exciting project involves close collaboration with several experimental labs. The ultimate goals of the work are to advance our understanding of how olfactory information is encoded, how animals learn from limited experience, and to develop novel AI algorithms inspired by principles learned from nature. The successful candidate will be responsible for: (a) Designing anatomically realistic computational network models of the olfactory system based on experimental data; (b) Developing and training machine learning models using empirical data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in processing and learning olfactory inputs. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects, such as modeling sleep or applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence for continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python and PyTorch is a significant plus. In brief, neurons convey information through electric pulses, which are generated by rapid ion transport between the cell’s interior and the local extracellular environment. These action potentials propagate from one neuron to the next via chemical synapses, where neurotransmitter-containing vesicles are released into the extracellular space for detection by neighboring neurons. The process of neurotransmitter release itself depends on a rapid, synaptically localized calcium exchange with the extracellular environment. While it is widely understood that transmembrane ion gradients are a crucial aspect of the biophysics that underlies communication within neuronal networks, there is a much more limited understanding of how molecules in the extracellular space, which are heterogenous and actively remodeled throughout the brain, contribute to neuronal communication over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. You will build theoretical frameworks and computational models to explore how extracellular factors, such as ion-ion interactions and mechanical perturbations, influence the diffusion of charged molecules, and subsequently, neuronal excitability. You can expect a close, bidirectional relationship between your theory/modeling efforts and experiments ongoing in the lab and will have the opportunity to test theoretical predictions in the laboratory, if desired. Thanks Dr Costecalde Thomas Here is the full description : Title: Post-doctoral fellow (H/F) signal processing, AI and software for a closed-loop epilepsy treatment application using focal cooling, seizure prediction and detection. Context: Epilepsy remains one of the most common neurological disease. This pathology has an incidence of 50 to 100 000 new cases per year and affects around 50 million people worldwide.Antiepileptics drugs are currently the gold treatment but they are effective only in 60-70% of patients. For several years, nonpharmacological potential new treatments have been investigated including an interesting new approach using focal cooling. In the literature, some results in preclinical models have shown that a cooling at 21°C can reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures. The postdoctoral fellowship will be carried out at Clinatec, in Grenoble, France. We have started a programme focused on focal cooling treatment. Our aim is to develop a medical device delivering a focal cooling to deep brain regions such as the hippocampus to treat epilepsy. We have therefore developed a preclinical implantable device to deliver this cooling in order to obtain information concerning the parameters needed to reduce seizures (target temperature, duration...). The fellowship will investigate algorithmic approaches to detecting pre-ictal phenomena (interictal spikes) associated with the occurrence of seizures, using the PNH-penicillin model or other acute models. Seizure prediction is an essential part of the cooling approach-maximizing efficacy while reducing technical constraints. The candidate will work closely with a neurosurgeon, who will provide neuroscientigic expertise, as well as a PhD student (biology). The laboratory also includes engineers, clinicians and a signal processing team. Missions will include, * Labelling of the different brain signals occurring in epilepsy (seizure, pre-ictal, interictal, post-ictal...). * Statistical analysis and hypothesis testing of the data. * Online closed loop optimization of seizure prediction/forecasting algorithms. * Detection of anomalies (HFO, fast ripples, phase coupling) for prediction and forecasting. * Testing of adaptive algorithms for prediction and forecasting (preclinical/clinical database): effects of cooling on algorithm performance. * Integration of other measurements (temperature...) in algorithm prediction. * Maintenance and improvement of experiment software Profil of candidate: PhD or equivalent with strong knowledge in time-series, machine learning, signal processing, with strong skills in Python. A three-year post-doctoral position in theoretical neuroscience is open to explore the mechanisms of interaction between interoceptive cardiac and exteroceptive tactile inputs at the cortical level. We aim to develop and validate a computational model of cardiac and of a somatosensory cortical circuit dynamics in order to determine the conditions under which interactions between exteroceptive and interoceptive inputs occur and which underlying mechanism (e.g., phase-resetting, gating, phasic arousal,..) best explain experimental data. Two postdoc positions are available in the laboratory of Zhongzheng Fu in the Department of Neurological Surgery, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. We study the neural mechanisms of cognitive control using mathematical modeling and human neurophysiology. We have several ongoing projects in the lab that include probing the network activity underlying cognitive control, the neuronal mechanisms for metacognition in decision making and artificial cognitive control. Our lab is situated in the heart of downtown New York City, operating jointly at NYU's Center for Neural Science and the Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute, a research institution within the Simons Foundation dedicated to computation. 2-year 100% postdoc position in social neuroscience at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) Würzburg, Germany The Translational Social Neuroscience Unit offers a position as a postdoctoral researcher (m/f/x) starting as soon as possible. We study the psychological and neurobiological processes underlying social interactions and decisions. In current studies, we investigate drivers of human social behavior such as empathy, social norms, group membership, and egoism, as well as the social modulation of anxiety and pain processing. We use neuroscientific methods (functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography) and psychophysiological measures (heart rate, skin conductance), combined with experimental paradigms from cognitive and social psychology and simulations of social interactions in virtual reality. Using smartphone-based surveys and mobile physiological sensors, we study social interactions in everyday life. As part of the Center of Mental Health and the Department of Psychiatry, Psychosomatic and Psychotherapy, we have access to 3T and 7T fMRI research scanners, TMS, EEG, a Virtual-Reality-Labor (CAVE), and to patients with different psychiatric conditions. We cherish a good working atmosphere and work as a team, but you will also be encouraged to develop and strengthen your own research profile. We seek a candidate with a background in psychology, social neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience or cognitive science with a successfully completed PhD. Ideally; you should have experiences with computational modeling (e.g., reinforcement learning models) and the respective software (e.g. MATLAB/ R programming). Experience with the collection and analysis of empirical date (ideally including neuroscience data) and excellent language skills in English and preferably also in German are required. The research topics are subject to the fits between the candidate’s research interests, expertise, and ongoing projects in the research group, particularly the DFG-funded research project on learning and intergroup processes. Postdoc openings in the Savin lab at NYU

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions in the Savin group in the Centre for Neural Science and Center for Data Science at NYU. We have several ongoing projects focused on statistical modeling of population responses during complex behavior, with a focus on latent population dynamics, inter-area interactions, and causal interventions. In particular, in the context of a collaboration with the Angelaki lab, we are working on elucidating mechanisms of dynamic updating of beliefs in foraging tasks, using multi-area recordings in VR and freely moving monkeys. In a separate project, funded by the Brain Initiative, we are developing tools for single trial estimation of patterns of gain modulation, in collaboration with the Coen-Cagli group. These are joint endeavors across the pair of lab, with regular joint meetings and group interactions. More broadly, the postdoc will be part of a large and intellectually vibrant community of researchers from the Center for Neuroscience and the Centre for Data Science at NYU. The successful applicant will have a degree in computational neuroscience or machine learning, excellent coding skills (python) and a track record of successful research. Prior experience in neural data analysis, probabilistic machine learning, or open software development are particularly appreciated. Postdoctoral positions for CRCNS project on Role of ACh on Memory

*Call for one experimental and one theoretical postdoctoral position in the framework of a collaborative (US/Spain) CRCNS project on the role of acetylcholine on memory.* The Wang lab at the Max Plack Florida Institute for Neuroscience, and the Computational Neuroscience group at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (Barcelona, Spain) are looking for postdoctoral researchers for an experimental-theoretical collaboration to shed light on the role of acetylcholine (ACh) in the formation and long-term dynamics of memory in rodents. This collaborative project will combine large-scale two-photon imaging recordings of in-vivo neuronal and ACh dynamics (Wang lab), with computational modeling and analysis (Roxin group) to investigate the role of ACh in the emergence of internally generated sequences in hippocampal CA1 cells. We will furthermore track the long-term dynamics of the resulting patterns of neuronal activity to characterize the degree of representational drift and elucidate the underlying mechanisms through network modeling. *Call for Experimental Postdoctoral Researcher*: The experimental postdoctoral position will be based at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, in the laboratory of Yingxue Wang.The ideal candidates should have a background in neuroscience or related field, and are interested in understanding the neuronal mechanisms of learning and memory. These action potentials propagate from one neuron to the next via chemical synapses, where neurotransmitter-containing vesicles are released into the extracellular space for detection by neighboring neurons. The process of neurotransmitter release itself depends on a rapid, synaptically localized calcium exchange with the extracellular environment. While it is widely understood that transmembrane ion gradients are a crucial aspect of the biophysics that underlies communication within neuronal networks, there is a much more limited understanding of how molecules in the extracellular space, which are heterogenous and actively remodeled throughout the brain, contribute to neuronal communication over a variety of spatial and temporal scales. You will build theoretical frameworks and computational models to explore how extracellular factors, such as ion-ion interactions and mechanical perturbations, influence the diffusion of charged molecules, and subsequently, neuronal excitability. Postdoc on Dravet syndrome modeling (Inria, BCAM, Achucarro)

Dear all, We have funds for a two-year postdoc on Dravet syndrome modeling. This is part of an international collaboration between Inria (Bordeaux, Montpellier, Sophia Antipolis, France) and BCAM - the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (Bilbao, Spain), involving Fabien Campillo, Pierre Del Moral, Mathieu Desroches and Serafim Rodrigues. The postdoc will be based at Inria, in Montpellier. The aim of the project is to develop a multiscale model of Dravet syndrome, from ionic channels of interacting neurons to large neural populations. We will use various modeling frameworks, adapted to the scale, from piecewise-deterministic Markov processes to mean-field formalism. The postdoc will perform a mathematical analysis of the models, extensive numerical simulations as well as data analysis using neural recordings from our experimental partners. We are looking for a postdoc to study single cell recordings in humans, performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery. The project aims to create the next-gen humanoid robots with efficient computation, high cognition, and autonomy, by synergistically combining interdisciplinary research development in neurophysiology, psychology, machine intelligence, cognitive mechatronics, neuromorphic engineering, and humanoid robotics. The PRIMI project seeks to create more capable interactive robots with advanced abilities, able to provide innovative and personalised services. Prototypes will be used in stroke rehabilitation studies. You will join the Smart Interactive Technologies (SIT) research laboratory; a vibrant interdisciplinary group, led by Prof. Alessandro Di Nuovo, that conducts world-leading research on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. The group is currently running several research projects worth over £2.5 million funding from the European Commission and UKRI. Indeed, neurophysiology and developmental psychology increasingly highlight the embodied nature of intelligence, which is shaped the experiences acquired through the body, such as manipulatives, gestures, and movements. To overcome the current limitations, the research methodology will adopt the developmental neuromorphic approach with cognitive agents that are embodied in humanoid robotic platforms. Developmental robotics fundamentally differs from traditional machine learning as it targets task-independent self-determined learning via interaction with the environment rather than task-specific inference over selected, human-edited sensory data. It also differs from traditional cognitive robotics because it focuses on the processes that allow the formation of cognitive capabilities rather than these capabilities themselves. Neuromorphic computing investigates large-scale processing systems that support natural neuronal computations through spike-driven communication to imitate the efficient neuro-synaptic framework of the physical brain. Compared to traditional approaches, key advantages of neuromorphic computing are energy efficiency, execution speed and robustness against local failures. Our lab focuses on investigating electromagnetic brain stimulation through computational methods and experiments with healthy volunteers. This position is funded by a newly awarded 5-year NIH R01 <https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/10719222> grant with the goal to investigate a novel form of brain stimulation called transcranial temporal interference stimulation (TIS) and to optimize and translate it into an effective and efficient neuromodulation method for academic research and clinical practice. The fellow will develop novel optimization methods for high-density TIS and supervise a PhD student who will conduct simulations and optimizations using finite element modeling. The goal is to provide noninvasive and spatially specific treatment options to patients with brain disorders resistant to existing approaches. You will join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in computational modeling and optimization, human and primate electrophysiology, cellular and systems neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. The focus is on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare neurodegenerative disease for which no efficient treatment exists. A particular goal is to test the possibility of stratifying ALS patients in subtypes with slow versus fast disease progression. It is based on a dataset of 30 ALS patients and matched controls, acquired on 7T and 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, which is currently being extended. Specifically, this dataset involves advanced MRI techniques that are promising for neurodegenerative diseases: quantitative and sodium MRI modalities, in addition to usual structural and functional MRI. We thus plan to build a multimodal prediction pipeline such as to test the combination of distinct types of MRI data (graph/network fusion) for clinical prediction. It also includes an international collaboration and aims to compare ALS datasets acquired in different centers. The position lies at the intersection between clinical research in a hospital and a neuroscience laboratory, aiming to bridge the different research cultures from both sides. Postdoc position in Bilbao on open-ended network self-organization

Hi all, We are offering one postdoc position on self-organized network modelling at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) under the supervision of MIguel Aguilera. DETAILS: **Postdoctoral Fellow on open-ended, self-organized, bio-inspired networks** Topics: One of the outstanding challenges in modelling living and cognitive systems is to capture their ability to continuously adapt and develop. Our behavioural responses are not fixed but driven instead by a complex ecology, composed of myriads of fluid and inconspicuous neurodynamical patterns that have slowly grown on us. AI models like neural networks can capture complex behaviours, but often this open-ended, liquid and ongoing reconfiguration is incredibly challenging to reproduce with static topologies. In contrast, liquid neural networks (or 'liquid brains') are a widespread class of networks with a particular feature: nodes (which may represent 'neurons' or 'agents' and typically all share identical rules) not only process information from neighbour nodes, but they also dynamically modify their network connections, e.g. by moving in space. These networks show how neural-like processing typically associated with static physiological networks can also emerge from fluid collective interaction, dynamically exploring configuration spaces beyond standard connection weight changes. Examples of this kind of model include collective decision-making and fluctuations in ant colonies or idiotypic cascades in immune networks. Objective: The aim of this project is to develop a theory of learning in liquid brains, focused on two aspects: 1) How do liquid brains learn? How is this process different from static neural networks?, and 2) what is the adaptive potential of liquid brains when they are embodied as an agent in interaction with a changing external environment? Answering these questions has the potential to extend the idea of liquid brains from a theoretically deep and intriguing concept to a useful tool available to the machine learning community. Specifically, liquid brains could afford more open-ended, self-improving systems, exploiting fluid reconfiguration of nodes as an adaptive dimension which is generally unexplored.
