The FOX team from the CRIStAL laboratory (UMR CNRS), Lille France is looking to recruit a PhD student starting as soon as possible on the following subject : Spiking Neural Networks for Video Analysis The FOX research group is part of the CRIStAL laboratory (University of Lille, CNRS), located in Lille, France. We focus on video analysis for human behavior understanding. Specifically, we develop spatio-temporal models of motions for tasks such as abnormal event detection, emotion recognition, and face alignment. We are also involved in IRCICA (CNRS), a research institute promoting multidisciplanary research. At IRCICA, we collaborate with computer scientists and experts in electronics engineering to create new models of neural networks that can be implemented on low-power hardware architectures. Recently, we designed state-of-the-art models for image recognition with single and multi-layer unsupervised spiking neural networks. We were among the first to succesfully apply unsupervised SNNs on modern datasets of computer vision. We also developed our own SNN simulator to support experiments with SNN on computer vision problems. Our work is published in major journals (Pattern Recognition, IEEE Trans. on Affective Computing) and conferences (WACV, IJCNN) in the field. Abstract: Spiking Neural Network have recently been evaluated on classical image recognition tasks [1]. This work has highlighted their promising performances in this domain and have identified ways to improve them to be competitive with comparable deep learning approaches. In particular, it demonstrated the ability of SNN architectures to learn relevant patterns for static pattern recognition in an unsupervised manner. However, dealing with static images is not enough, and the computer vision community is increasingly interested in video analysis, for two reasons. First, video data is more and more common and corresponds to a wide range of applications (video surveillance, audio-visual productions, autonomous vehicles...). Second, this data is richer than isolated static images, and thus offers the possibility to develop more effective systems, e.g. using motion information. Thus, it is recognized in the community that modeling motion in videos is more relevant than studying visual appearance alone for tasks such as action or emotion recognition. The next step for SNNs is therefore to study their ability to model motion rather than, or in addition to, image appearance. The goal of the Ph.D. candidate will be to explore the use of SNNs for space-time modeling in videos. This work will be targeted towards applications in human behavior understanding and especially action recognition. More specifically, the Ph.D. candidate is expected to: * identify what issues may prevent space-time modeling with SNNs and how they can be circumvented; * propose new supervised and unsupervised SNN models for motion modeling, which are compatible with hardware implementations on ultra-low power devices; * evaluate the proposed models on standard datasets for video analysis. Experience in one or more of the following is a plus: • image processing, computer vision; • machine learning; • bio-inspired computing; • research methodology (literature review, experimentation…). Candidates should have the following skills: • good proficiency in English, both spoken and written; • scientific writing; • programming (experience in C++ is a plus, but not mandatory). This PHD thesis will be funded in the framework of the ANVI-Luxant industrial chair. The general objective of the Chair is to make a scientific and technological progress in the mastery of emerging information processing architectures such as neuromorphic architectures as an embedded artificial intelligence technique. The use-case studies will come from video protection in the context of retail and transportation. The candidate will be funded for 3 years; he/she is expected to defend his/her thesis and graduate by the end of the contract. We focus on video analysis for human behavior understanding. Specifically, we develop spatio-temporal models of motions for tasks such as abnormal event detection, emotion recognition, and face alignment. Abstract: Facial expression analysis is a well-studied field when dealing with segmented and constrained data captured in lab conditions. However, many challenges must still be addressed for building in-the-wild solutions that account for various motion intensities, strong head movements during expressions, the spotting of the subsequence containing the expression, partially occluded faces, etc. In recent years, learned features based on deep learning architectures were proposed in order to deal with these challenges. Deep learning is characterized by neural architectures that depend on a huge number of parameters. The convergence of these neural networks and the estimation of optimal parameters require large amounts of training data, especially when dealing with spatio-temporal data, particulary adequate for facial expression recognition. The quantity, but also the quality, of the data and its capacity to reflect the addressed challenges are key elements for training properly the networks. Augmenting the data artificially in an intelligent and controlled way is an interesting solution. The augmentation techniques identified in the literature are mainly focused on image augmentation and consist of scaling, rotation, and flipping operations, or they make use of more complex adversarial training. These techniques can be applied at the frame level, but there is a need for sequence level augmentation in order to better control the augmentation process and ensure the absence of temporal artifacts that might bias the learning process. The generation of dynamic frontal facial expressions has already been addressed in the literature. The goal of this Ph.D. is to conceive new space-time augmentation methods for unconstrained facial analysis (involving head movements, occultations, etc.). Attention should be paid in assessing the quality standards related to facial expression requirements: stability over time, absence of facial artifacts, etc. More specifically, the Ph.D. can didate is expected to conceive augmentation architectures that address various challenges (motion intensities, head movements) while maintaining temporal stability and eliminating facial artifacts. What do brains compute, and how do they do it? Has evolution conserved a small canonical set of computations performed by neural circuitry? In a just-published invited Perspective for the Journal of Computational Neuroscience, I present arguments for (and against) these fundamental questions. The title, Where are the cores in this thing? …and what are they computing? (with apologies to Larry Abbott) is of course an homage to Larry's 'Where are the switches on this thing?' I go on to note that independent of specific microcircuit connectivity, some key neuronal and network properties, conserved across all nervous systems, may be essential for computation. Candidates include irregular firing, stochastic plastic synapses, alternate A/D PSPs/spikes, nonlinear f-I, cellular longevity, dynamic but stable networks with both fixed and adaptive features, and local processing linked by distant connectivity for coherence and modulation. As part of a collaboration with the AFRL, the laboratory of Dr Santamaria at UTSA is looking for a talented postdoc to computationally study how fast thermal gradients impact synaptic mechanisms in dendritic spines. This will be part of a collaborative project between UTSA, AFRL, and other universities where experiments and simulations will combine to understand fundamental plasticity processes in neuronal synapses. The results will have important practical implications in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. The selected person will work on developing deterministic and stochastic models of how biochemical signals, involved in synaptic plasticity, are affected by thermal gradients. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on topics across the breadth of computational neuroscience, including experimental underpinnings and machine learning analogues. The rest of the day will be spent working on research projects under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Individual research projects will focus on the modelling of neurons, neural systems, behaviour, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data, and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. New this year is a week focused on neuroscience-inspired machine learning! Who should apply? This course is aimed at Masters and early-PhD level students though Honours or advanced undergraduates may also apply. Postdoctoral students who can motivate why the course would benefit them are also encouraged to apply, Students should have sufficient quantitative skills, (e.g. a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering or related field). Some knowledge of neural biology will be useful but not essential. PostDoc position in Göttingen: Retina research and computational neuroscience

An exciting full-time postdoc position is available in the lab of Tim Gollisch at the University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany. The project centers on investigating information processing and neural coding in the neural network of the vertebrate retina, using a combination of experimental recordings with computational modeling and data analysis. The postdoc will contribute to our ongoing work under the ERC Consolidator Grant project CODE4Vision (https://www.retina.uni-goettingen.de/code4vision/) The work includes participation in recordings from the isolated retina (mostly mouse) with multielectrodes, using both wild-type retinas and optogenetic retina models of vision restoration therapy. Patch-clamp recordings are also a possibility. A strong focus will then be to combine these experiments with novel tools for data analysis and mathematical modeling, using cascade-type models (linear-nonlinear models and beyond), artificial neural networks, or machine-learning techniques to analyze the retinal network. Our research group is integrated into the strong and lively neuroscience research community of Göttingen, including the university, several Max Planck Institutes, the German Primate Center, and the European Neuroscience Institute. The Spring School will cover four different modeling paradigms: ACT-R, Nengo, PRIMs, and discriminative learning. It thereby offers a unique opportunity to learn the relative strengths and weaknesses of these approaches. In addition, this year we are offering a lecture series on dynamical systems, which should be interesting for anyone looking into modeling cognitive dynamics at some or other level of abstraction. We recommend this lecture series as an excellent combination with Nengo, for those interested in neuromorphic computing. The first day will provide an introduction to all five topics. Nengo Teacher: Terry Stewart and Andreas Stöckel (University of Waterloo) Website: http://www.nengo.ca Nengo is a toolkit for converting high-level cognitive theories into low-level spiking neuron implementations. In this way, aspects of model performance such as response accuracy and reaction times emerge as a consequence of neural parameters such as the neurotransmitter time constants. It has been used to model adaptive motor control, visual attention, serial list memory, reinforcement learning, Tower of Hanoi, and fluid intelligence. Participants will learn to construct these kinds of models, starting with generic tasks like representing values and positions, and ending with full production-like systems. There will also be special emphasis on extracting various forms of data out of a model, such that it can be compared to experimental data. PRIMs Teacher: Niels Taatgen (University of Groningen) Website: https://www.ai.rug.nl/~niels/prims/index.html How do people handle and prioritize multiple tasks? How can we learn something in the context of one task, and partially benefit from it in another task? The goal of PRIMs is to cross the artificial boundary that most cognitive architectures have imposed on themselves by studying single tasks. It has mechanisms to model transfer of cognitive skills, and the competition between multiple goals. In the tutorial we will look at how PRIMs can model phenomena of cognitive transfer and cognitive training, and how multiple goals compete for priority in models of distraction. Discriminative learning and the lexicon: NDL and LDL Harald Baayen, Yu-Ying Chuang, and Maria Heitmeier University of Tuebingen NDL and LDL are simple computational algorithms for lexical learning and lexical processing. Both NDL and LDL assume that learning is discriminative, driven by prediction error, and that it is this error which calibrates the association strength between input and output representations. Both words’ forms and their meanings are represented by numeric vectors, and mappings between forms and meanings are set up. For comprehension, form vectors predict meaning vectors. For production, meaning vectors map onto form vectors. These mappings can be learned incrementally, approximating how children learn the words of their language. Alternatively, optimal mappings representing the endstate of learning can be estimated. The NDL and LDL algorithms are incorporated in a computational theory of the mental lexicon, the ‘discriminative lexicon’. The model shows good performance both with respect to production and comprehension accuracy, and for predicting aspects of lexical processing, including morphological processing, across a wide range of experiments. Since mathematically, NDL and LDL implement multivariate multiple regression, the ‘discriminative lexicon’ provides a cognitively motivated statistical modeling approach to lexical processing. In this course, we will show how comprehension and production of morphologically complex words can be modeled successfully with the "Discriminative Lexicon" model for a range of languages (Hebrew, Maltese, English, German, Dutch, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Kinyarwanda, Estonian, and Finnish). We will discuss the kinds of form and meaning representations that can be set up, including form features derived from the speech signal for auditory comprehension and semantic features grounded in distributional semantics. Furthermore, we will provide a survey of the measures that can be derived from the model mappings to predict empirical response variables such as reaction times in primed and unprimed lexical decision, spoken word duration, and tongue movements during speaking. Finally, participants will receive some training in using the JudiLing package for Julia. This package provides optimized code for implementing and evaluating components of a "discriminative lexicon" for a given language. Dynamical Systems: a Navigation Guide Teacher: Herbert Jaeger (University of Groningen) This lecture series gives a broad overview over the zillions of formal models and methods invented by mathematicians and physicists for describing “dynamical systems”. A postdoctoral fellowship in Machine Learning for Brain Connectivity in Clinical Neuroscience We are pleased to announce the opening of one Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Neuroinformatics Lab, an interdisciplinary initiative between the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC) of the University of Trento, and the Center for Digital Health of Fondazione Bruno Kessler. The position is part of the “Neusurplan” project, an integrated approach to neurosurgery planning based on multimodal and longitudinal data. The goal is to pursue an integrated approach to pre-operative neurosurgical planning, combining structural and functional characterization of brain connectivity. The data driven strategy will take advantage of a unique dataset of intra-operative points of directed electrical stimulation and the related functional responses. In this project, the candidate will pursue research on machine learning methods for neuroimaging data analysis to study and characterize brain connectivity, with applications to longitudinal studies and clinical practice. The ideal candidate should have a mixed background in neuroimaging techniques and numerate disciplines, like computer science, engineering, physics, or mathematics. The long-term goal of this project is to develop methods for automated, video-based recognition, motion tracking, and pose estimation of individual nonhuman primates as well as recognition of action types and inter-agent interactions in groups of primates freely moving primaates. We strive for generalisation across a range of primate species and varying real-world environmental conditions without the need to acquire detailed keypoint annotations in every context. The automated behavioural analysis tools developed in this project constitute a key enabling technology for a Collaborative Research Center focused on studying the Cognition of Interaction. Currently, wider use of the technique is held back both by a data processing bottleneck and the degradation in hologram quality in field measurements compared to laboratory experiments due to the physical environment. In this project, we will train machine learning algorithms to reconstruct holograms using a combination of real holograms from the lab and the field and simulated datasets. We will start with simple idealized Lorenz-Mie theory, but later extend to full wave-equation calculations including non-flat and non-Gaussian beams, realistic defects in the optical components, dirty optics, camera micro-lens arrays, pixel cross-talk and digitization errors, non-spherical particles including ice crystals, aggregate particles with different indices of refraction, non-perfect collimation, non-perfect alignment, spatial variation in the index of refraction of the air in the view volume due to temperature gradients, multi-scattering from multiple particles, etc. Role: Postdoc (preferred) or PhD student Your profile: Strong background in physics. For example, astrocytes may regulate cognitive functions by releasing gliotransmitters that activate hundreds of neuronal synapses at once, regulating system-level short-/long-term plasticity. Activity changes in neuro-oligodendrocytes networks may dynamically regulate myelin axon-sheathing, which in turn may affect action potential conduction, neuronal spike timing, and oscillations linked to cognitive/social/affective processes. Finally, microglia activity-dependent synaptic pruning may alter behaviorally activated neural networks over long time scales. Discovering how mechanistic dysfunctions in neuro-glia interactions may alter behavioral phenotypes relevant to mental health is a challenge with potentially high translational impact. Studying how neuro-glia activity coupling affects complex behavior has been challenging in part due to technical barriers. For example, until recently, the field lacked reliable and selective tools to manipulate glial cells. Biotechnology is now expanding the range of possible investigations into glial function by providing new methods necessary to record and manipulate glial cells with mouse lines and viral methods expressing designer reporters, sensors, and actuators of glial activity. Advances in metabolic imaging and genetically encoded activity measurements allow for simultaneous observation of interactions in neurons and glial activity. Tools are also available for selectively stimulating and silencing glia cells’ calcium signaling in-vivo through designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) and optogenetics. In parallel, basic behavioral neuroscience has been rapidly advanced by integrating system-level neurotechnology with computational modeling. Computational models (e.g., reinforcement learning, drift-diffusion, Bayesian, biophysically realistic, dynamical systems, and deep neural networks) have directly linked behavioral parameters and the neural substrates that compute them, but the role of non-neuronal cells in these computations have been largely ignored. Thus, the integration of computational modeling approaches to investigate neuro-glia interactions could provide new perspectives on how they enable complex behavior and how they become altered in mental illnesses. Combining newly developed experimental methods for recording and controlling neuro-glia activity with rigorous computational approaches may inform mechanistic models of how neuro-glia interactions may compute or fail to compute cognitive and socio-affective functions relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders. Responsive Areas of Research Examples of research areas that may be included in applications submitted under this NOSI include, but are not limited to, the application of existing or novel: * Experimental methods to measure or control glial activity in behaving animals to elucidate the role of neuro-glia activity in cognitive or socio-affective behaviors. * Biologically inspired computational approaches to provide a mechanistic explanation of the consequences of neuro-glia interactions during cognitive or socio-affective behaviors. * Computational models able to map fine-grained cognitive or socio-affective behavioral parameters onto neuro-glia computations. * Neuro-glia computational principles or mechanistic knowledge derived from animal experiments in Basic Experimental Studies Involving Humans (BESH). Applications must include both: * A well-conceived scientific rationale, question, and/or hypothesis grounded in cognitive or socio-affective science, where neuro-glia activity may mechanistically explain a complex behavior. * Measurement or control neuro-glia activity during complex behavior. Applications proposing to exclusively investigate the effects of glial cells on behavior will be considered responsive to this NOSI, but applications including measurement and/or manipulation of both glia and neurons will be given higher priority. PostDoc position in real-time fMRI at Max Planck UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry We are looking for a PostDoc to work on an exciting project investigating the role of endogenous brain fluctuations on decision making, funded by my ERC Starting Grant. In this project, we will investigate how endogenous, spontaneous fluctuations (aka resting-state fluctuations) influence behaviour. In our previous work (https://pnas.org/content/116/37/18732.short) we showed that moment-to-moment fluctuations affect risk taking behaviour. Here, we want to build on this and see how wide-reaching these effects are, and what the pharmacological bases of these effects are. We are looking for someone with expertise in advanced functional neuroimaging and preferably experience in real-time fMRI. We think that a postdoc with advanced understanding of time-series analyses and in-depth fMRI experience would be best suited for this position. The main goal of our research group is to understand how properties of neurons and synapses allows the brain to learn to complete difficult tasks. We are particularly interested in how cognitive-level functions - as formalized by artificial intelligence - can be implemented by neurons in particular systems [1-2]. In particular, our work explores the relationship between properties of cortical neurons and the diverse methods of credit assignment that have been used to train artificial neural networks. We are also interested in the relationship between mood-related networks (serotonergic centers, dopaminergic centers) and types of reinforcement learning. To study this, we perform computational modeling closely related to experimental data. Our work typically involves the development of both data analysis methods and the study of simulated neuronal networks. For an example of previous work see Ref [1-4]. The PhD project will be well suited to candidates ideally having experience in scientific programming, mathematical modeling, phsyics, mathematics, computer science or similar disciplines. The research projects require a meaningful navigation of electrophysiological, opto-physiological, behavioral and anatomical data. Programming skills (preferably Python) skills are highly desirable and knowledge of Machine Learning/Deep Learning or numerical simulation of physical systems is a plus. Dear colleagues and friends of IMRF, This is just a quick update on the International Multisensory Research Forum (IMRF), scheduled for July 4-7 2022 in Ulm, Germany. ( https://cops.ifp.uni-ulm.de/imrf2022/ <https://cops.ifp.uni-ulm.de/imrf2022/> ) We are monitoring the current pandemic situation very closely and as you are aware, predictions into the longer future have been proven to be very difficult. This uncertainty is why we did not update you earlier. Anyway, here is the current status of our planning and thinking: We are still very determined to host IMRF in the summer of 2022 as an in presence meeting. Whether or not there will be a hybrid addition to IMRF which would allow for also online participation, is not yet determined, as any hybrid format is a huge organisational challenge. To make it easier for you to decide whether or not you can travel to Germany in summer 2022, we have tried to post the deadlines for abstract submission and registration as late as possible. Currently, the abstract submission deadline is set to April 01, the date by which you can also change and adapt your already submitted abstract (and symposium contributions). The review process will start after this date. We strife to keep the already accepted symposia and ask the symposium organisers / attendees to update their information accordingly if individual talks need to be adapted. Please get in contact with us by the submission deadline in case of necessary substitutions, The early registration deadline is set to May 20 giving us a bit more than a month to plan with the number of participants. Research at the European Neuroscience Institute ranges from molecular biology to human psychophysics and involves a range of model organisms (from drosophila to non-human primates), as well as techniques and approaches (electrophysiology, two-photon imaging, fMRI, EEG, behavior). Two postdoc positions are available in the lab of Jan Clemens at the European Neuroscience Institute Göttingen, Germany. A major focus of the lab is discovering how sensory information is processed and integrated to drive behavior. We combine high-throughput behavioral assays, machine learning (pose tracking), computational modelling, and modern systems neuroscience tools (calcium imaging and optogenetics). The postdocs to be hired will focus on how different sensory modalities are integrated to organize social interactions in fruit flies, with the goal of identifying the neural substrates and computations driving social behavior. We are going to combine a variety of state-of-the-art techniques, including automated behavioral analyses, optogenetics, in-vivo two photon imaging, and computational modelling. The postdocs will have the opportunity to learn experimental and computational skills in the lab. AI researchers have long debated the relative value of building systems with strongly pre-specified knowledge representations versus learning representations from scratch, driven by data. However, in cognitive science, it is now widely accepted that the analogous “nature versus nurture?” question is a false choice: explaining the origins of human intelligence will most likely require both powerful learning mechanisms and a powerful foundation of built-in representational structure and inductive biases. I will talk about our efforts to build models of the starting state of the infant mind, as well as the learning algorithms that grow knowledge through early childhood and beyond. These models are expressed as probabilistic programs, defined on top of simulation engines that capture the basic dynamics of objects and agents interacting in space and time. Learning algorithms draw on techniques from program synthesis and probabilistic program induction. I will show how these models are beginning to capture core aspects of human cognition and cognitive development, in terms that can be useful for building more human-like AI. I will also talk about some of the major outstanding challenges facing these and other models of human learning. Bio: Josh Tenenbaum is Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at MIT in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Center for Brains, Minds and Machines (CBMM). He received his PhD from MIT in 1999, and taught at Stanford from 1999 to 2002. His long-term goal is to reverse-engineer intelligence in the human mind and brain, and use these insights to engineer more human-like machine intelligence. His current research focuses on the development of common sense in children and machines, the neural basis of common sense, and models of learning as Bayesian program synthesis. His research group's papers have been recognized with awards at multiple conferences in Cognitive Science, Computer Vision, AI, Reinforcement Learning and Decision Making, and Robotics. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contributions in Psychology from the American Psychological Association (2008), the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences (2011), the Howard Crosby Warren Medal from the Society of Experimental Psychologists (2016), the R&D Magazine Innovator of the Year award (2018), and a MacArthur Fellowship (2019). Overview The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience is a three-year fellowship program that aims to: · Integrate data scientists in neuroscience research · Challenge traditional approaches to neuroscience · Provide multidisciplinary, multi-organizational co-mentorship · Provide a network and community · Support career development in data science The fellowship is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington (through the eScience Institute and the Computational Neuroscience Center) and is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute. Neuroscience needs data scientists. The brain represents one of the most complex challenges facing science today. And now with advances in our methods to study the brain—Neuropixel probes that can record from 1000 neurons at once, growing consensus on data standards across laboratories—the field is flooded with data that needs interpretation. The skills of data scientists are essential to springboard the field to the next stage of discoveries. Towards that end, the Shanahan Foundation Fellowship was created to bring fresh perspectives into the field, encouraging data scientists from outside neuroscience to come and work with leading investigators at the Allen Institute and UW. The Allen Institute is unique in its infrastructure and pipeline that enables the production of standardized, reproducible data on the brain (as evidenced by our vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/>). Together with our collaborators at the UW computational Neuroscience Center and eScience Institute, we provide data scientists with the ideal opportunity and resources to mine for novel insights and discoveries. Details You do not need experience in neuroscience to apply. The goal of the fellowship is to provide opportunities to non-traditional applicants who would not typically be funded by the typical postdoctoral fellowships in neuroscience. The fellowship has been purposefully designed to give fellows the time and mentorship to get up to speed in a new field and new data collection techniques and methods. Fellows will be employed by the Allen Institute as either a Scientist I or a Scientist II (with a matching salary) and will receive an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. During the three-year fellowship, fellows will identify a mentor at the Allen Institute, where the fellows will be based. Fellows will select a co-mentor at the University of Washington who will provide additional guidance on a project designed by the fellow, focused on quantitative analysis of neuroscience data available through the Allen Institute’s vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/> – ranging from molecular, genomic, transcriptional, physiological, morphological, anatomical and functional whole-brain level in the brains of mice, non-human primates and humans – or through ongoing laboratory work. Each fellow will have the opportunity to mentor a fully-funded UW undergraduate or postbaccalaureate research assistant who helps with their research for 3-12 months. Fellows will participate in the postdoctoral career development program at the University’s e-Science Institute and the UW Computational Neuroscience Center. The eSciences Institute offers regular workshops on key topics including cloud computing, python and reproducibility. A postdoctoral position will become available in the very near future in the Canavier computational neuroscience lab at LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our lab focuses on modeling single neurons and networks in a synergistic loop with experimental collaborators Jochen Roeper, John White and Sonia Gasparini. We are interested in how oscillations are generated and how networks synchronize, and in how the intrinsic properties of neurons contribute to how they integrate their inputs. A quantitative background in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field coupled with a passion for applying quantitative techniques and theory to neuroscience is required. We are primarily interested in 1) theta and gamma oscillations in the hippocampus and 2) in the dopamine neurons of the basal ganglia. The Brascamp Lab for Visual Neuroscience at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Associate (postdoc). Prof. Sen Cheng, Institute for Neural Computation at the Ruhr University Bochum, invites applications for a full time *Postdoctoral position* (TV-L E13) in Computational Neuroscience. The position starts on July 1, 2022 and is funded for three years. The successful applicant will work on a collaborative project (within the Collaborative Research Center “Extinction Learning” (SFB 1280 <https://sfb1280.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/en/home/>)), together with experimentalists to: * analyze learning dynamics in behavioral, neural, and psychophysiological data, which will be collected by other projects within the SFB 1280, * compare the learning dynamics between individuals, species, learning phases and learning paradigms, * develop algorithms to analyze the learning dynamics, * develop and study computational models of learning dynamics, * coordinate research with other participating projects. Candidates must have: * a doctorate degree in neuroscience, physics, mathematics, electrical/biomedical engineering or a closely related field, * relevant experience in mathematical modeling, * excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Matlab), * excellent communication skills in English, * the ability to work well in a team. Research experience in neuroscience would be a further asset. The position is third party funded and does not have any formal teaching duties attached. The research group is highly dynamic and uses diverse computational modeling approaches including biological neural networks, cognitive modeling, and machine learning to investigate learning and memory in humans and animals. *Position: *Faculty Director, Sapien Labs Center for the Human Brain and Mind at Krea University *About the Centre:* Krea University aims to establish, in partnership with Sapien Labs, a center for research and learning related to the human brain and mind. The centre is anticipated to have synergistic collaborations across various entities within the Krea ecosystem. *The Role:* The Faculty Director will guide and build the research program at the Sapien Labs Center for Human Brain and Mind at Krea University in collaboration with key research advisors at the centre. He/she will hold a faculty position at Krea University, and will hold this responsibility along with their teaching/research work. The Faculty Director will also be responsible for fostering synergies among faculty members, students, post-docs, and the broader academic community at Krea University, along with promoting the centre’s research within wider academic networks in India and abroad. Dear all, ---- please forward this call to potentially interested mentors in your network --- INCF will apply to be a mentor organization in Google Summer of Code <https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com> for the 12th time running. We are calling for open source software development project ideas with some sort of *neuro connection* - fixes or extensions to big/broadly applicable or small/niche tools used by neuroscience researchers, efforts and initiatives in the broad field of computational neuroscience. If your project supports or implements INCF endorsed standards or best practices <https://www.incf.org/resources/sbps>, we especially encourage you to apply. We are also* looking for mentors who are willing to take on student-proposed projects *that fit their interests. As you may have seen earlier this year, Google has announced some changes to the GSoC program for 2022: - Candidate *eligibility* will widen, the only requirement is that candidates are newcomers to open source (instead of "GSoC student", the official term Google uses is now "GSoC contributor"). - The project *effort* can be half-time or full-time - 175 or 350 hours. Everyone submitting at least two project ideas will be asked to *include both half-time and full-time projects*. - Project end dates can be extended (but not moved earlier), at the discretion of the org admin. To keep the administration manageable, *we will only accept projects initially planned for a 12 week duration*. Extensions during the program period will be made on a case-by-case basis. Also, the usual reminder: there is no guarantee that INCF will be accepted as a mentoring organization this year; Google announces the accepted organizations sometime in March. Across 22 projects, the CRC 1528 "Cognition of Interaction"<https://uni-goettingen.de/de/652672.html> will investigate how fundamental cognitive functions and their neurobiological foundations contribute to human and nonhuman primate social behavior and social interactions. The network is formed by a highly interdisciplinary consortium of systems and computational neuroscientists, data scientists, psychologists and behavioral and cognitive biologists. We are looking for candidates with an excellent Master's degree in neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, computer science or a related field who are committed to pursuing a career in research. The successful applicant will develop and apply novel information theoretic measures to high-dimensional behavioral and electrophysiological neural recordings to investigate signatures of predictive processing of the actions of others. The ideal candidate should have excellent skills in scientific writing and should have demonstrated her/his ability to work independently. Prior experience with predictive coding theory and experience with the application of information theory to biological data are a plus. Proven coding skills in a language relevant to data analysis (e.g. Python, Julia, R, Scala, Java or Mat-lab) and a co-authorship on a scientific publication are also considered as an advantage. You can also visit the homepage we have created on the Frontiers website, which defines the focus of the topic, and where all published articles will appear: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/28267/cortico-striato-nigro-tha… Movement in the body is directly controlled by motor cortex, and also determined by multiple subcortical structures, such as thalamus and the basal ganglia (including striatum and dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra). Many lines of evidence have suggested the cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical circuitry plays a major role in motor learning and control. This circuitry has also been investigated for its causal role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases are often associated with movement disorders and neuronal dysfunction in degenerated brain structures, such as the striatum in Huntington’s disease and dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta in Parkinson's disease. Degeneration fundamentally changes the dynamics of local neuronal circuits, and these changes then propagate through the structural connectome of whole brain circuitry, eventually altering global brain dynamics. However, our current understanding of these system dynamics in the cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical circuitry remains rudimentary. Hence, theoretical studies about critical system variables and computational principles of this circuitry, constrained by recordings throughout, will shed new light on causes of motor dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases. This Research Topic of Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience aims to bring together recent advances in theoretical modeling of cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical network and experimental observations. It is a newly established highly interdisciplinary school that brings a full breadth of expertise from ecology to physics to computer science to neurobiology in order to understand animal behavior across the whole animal kingdom . Below are the details of the project ( https://www.ab.mpg.de/426580/Couzin-Fuch_El-Hady ): Foraging is a universal, evolutionary conserved, behavior as animals in nature forage in groups across large spaces looking for resources to satisfy their energetic needs. To date, laboratory experiments have been constrained to animals foraging in small spaces and in small groups. There is an increasing evidence that both neural and behavioral dynamics, however, are principally different in natural spatial scales. The project aims to investigate basic principles underlying foraging decisions in large-scale dynamic environments, that mimic natural habitats. We will focus on two very different model organisms, each exhibits different adaptations to foraging under conditions of considerable uncertainty: swarm-forming locusts and rats. The experiments will be performed at the imaging hangar in the visual computing of collective building at Konstanz University. The imaging hangar is the largest indoor animal imaging facility in the world, offering the opportunity to perform foraging experiments at an unprecedented scale. Using patch foraging as a quintessential behavioral paradigm, and a combination of high throughput continuous video tracking and quantitative modeling approaches, we aim to elucidate how foraging strategies are updated in a changing social and physical world. PhD position on electrical stimulation-induced changes in neuroplasticity at Inserm, Rennes, France

*Title*: Neuro-inspired macroscale models of electrical stimulation-induced changes in neuroplasticity *Context*. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields ( https://www.galvani-lab.eu/) *Rationale*. Neuroplasticity refers to a wide ensemble of brain changes at cellular and network level that result from learning, practice, environmental influences, etc. In the normal brain, neuroplasticity is physiological process that allows for acquisition of new competences for instance. In the epileptic brain, neuroplasticity is a pathological process which alters the balance between excitation and inhibition giving rise to epileptic seizures. Neuroplastic changes may occur at different time scales (short and long) and may potentiate or, on the opposite, depress neuronal activity generated by brain circuits. Electrical stimulation (supra-threshold) and neuromodulation (sub-threshold) are two different methods that can be used to alter brain plasticity in order to lower hyperexcitability and subsequently decrease the occurrence of epileptiform events. *Objective*. This research focuses on neuromodulation. The objective of the proposed PhD position is to design neuroinspired macroscale models that will account for immediate (acute) and lasting (short- or long-term) effects of neuromodulatory weak electric fields, which remain elusive to some extent. *Methods*. After deep bibliographic review, biomathematical models to be developed will combine neurophysiological models of neuronal populations with mechanisms of action induced by weak electric fields on neuronal assemblies, typically on synaptic connectivity and firing rates. They will provide a unique framework to clarify and optimize the effects of dynamic E-fields induced by stimulation. They will be based on already-existing macroscale computational models which allow for simulation of epileptic activity (interictal spikes, ictal activity) generated by large-scale networks, as observed in human epilepsies. An issue to be solved is the translation from stimulation-induced short- and long-term effects at cellular level into average effects at population level. Optimization methods will be developed for identifying “therapeutic” neuromodulation parameters. Models will use the Neural Mass Model formalism (NMMs). They will be developed in Python. GALVANI can be viewed as a distributed lab (Rennes-Barcelona-Marseille) working under a common policy to ensure coherence of research and intense collaboration and cross-fertilization. Fellows will be co-supervised in a unique, shared environment with exposure to science, technology and clinical experience. *Candidate profile*. The research project is at the interface between biomathematics (neuro-inspired models), biophysics (electric field models), and neuroscience/neurology (epilepsy). The candidate will preferably have some background in dynamical systems, computational neuroscience/systems biology or in electrical engineering with experience in bio-signal processing and in biophysics. Knowledge in electrophysiology and/or EEG analysis would be an asset. And now with advances in our methods to study the brain—Neuropixel probes that can record from 1000 neurons at once, growing consensus on data standards across laboratories—the field is flooded with data that needs interpretation. The skills of data scientists are essential to springboard the field to the next stage of discoveries. Towards that end, the Shanahan Foundation Fellowship was created to bring fresh perspectives into the field, encouraging data scientists from outside neuroscience to come and work with leading investigators at the Allen Institute and UW. The Allen Institute is unique in its infrastructure and pipeline that enables the production of standardized, reproducible data on the brain (as evidenced by our vast *data banks* <http://www.brain-map.org/>*)*. Together with our collaborators at the UW computational Neuroscience Center and eScience Institute, we provide data scientists with the ideal opportunity and resources to mine for novel insights and discoveries. Details *You do not need experience in neuroscience to apply. *The goal of the fellowship is to provide opportunities to non-traditional applicants who would not typically be funded by the typical postdoctoral fellowships in neuroscience. The fellowship has been purposefully designed to give fellows the time and mentorship to get up to speed in a new field and new data collection techniques and methods*.* Fellows will be employed by the Allen Institute as either a Scientist I or a Scientist II (with a matching salary) and will receive an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. During the three-year fellowship, fellows will identify a mentor at the Allen Institute, where the fellows will be based. Fellows will select a co-mentor at the University of Washington who will provide additional guidance on a project designed by the fellow, focused on quantitative analysis of neuroscience data available through the Allen Institute’s vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/> – ranging from molecular, genomic, transcriptional, physiological, morphological, anatomical and functional whole-brain level in the brains of mice, non-human primates and humans – or through ongoing laboratory work. Each fellow will have the opportunity to mentor a fully-funded UW undergraduate or postbaccalaureate research assistant who helps with their research for 3-12 months. Fellows will participate in the postdoctoral career development program at the University’s *e-Science Institute* and the *UW Computational Neuroscience Center*. The eSciences Institute offers regular workshops on key topics including cloud computing, python and reproducibility. Throughout the three years, fellows will be supported in developing a network in the neuroscience field and sharing their progress with peers at conferences. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be data scientists in a broad sense, with a Ph.D. in a quantitative field such as computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or biology with a background in statistical, computational and machine learning methods. Ph.D.’s should have been awarded in the last 3 years. One goal of the fellowship is to build a network of collaborators, as such, priority will be given to applicants who are not currently postdoctoral fellows or scientists at the University of Washington or the Allen Institute. The International Brain Laboratory SOFTWARE ENGINEER <https://academic.careers.columbia.edu/#/85586> will work closely with our scientists to develop and deploy software and electronic hardware for experiment control, collection, storage, and data analysis. The experiments make use of complex control systems including video, audio, and fluidics, the data are processed by sophisticated algorithms including GPU-based deep networks, and then transferred automatically to a central database. The successful candidate will interface with scientists in our member laboratories (located in London, Lisbon, Geneva, Paris, New York City, Long Island, Princeton, San Francisco, and Ashburn VA) and with the core software development team based in Lisbon, to support experiments and ensure data is of high quality. The ideal candidate would have extensive experience with Linux, Python, Arduino systems, electronics, team programming, quality assurance, web design, and system administration. A flexible attitude, the ability to quickly adapt to new situations and learn new systems, and to work independently as part of a geographically distributed team, are essential. Experience with scientific research, networking, parallel computing, or relational databases would also be desirable. As this is a distributed collaboration, the candidate should be prepared to travel to all partner sites, with a home base in Lisbon, London or New York. Numerous experimental datasets show that the shared variability can be well described by a small number of latent variables, indicating coordinated trial-to-trial fluctuations within the population. Besides, cortical areas are connected through long-range excitatory projections, and it has been shown that there exists a communication subspace between connected but distinct brain areas that predicts spiking activity in a downstream area using upstream activity. However, little is known about the effect of neuronal dynamics on interactions between brain areas. Using a layered spiking network with within- and between-layer spatially structured connectivity, we show that pattern formation decreases within-area dimensionality similarly when spatio-temporal patterns emerge within a population or when they are inherited from a connected population. Yet, the fidelity of communication from an upstream to a downstream area, as estimated by a linear reduced-rank regression measure, is affected by the origin of pattern formation. Specifically, downstream activity is poorly predicted by upstream activity when spatio-temporal patterns emerge downstream, while it is particularly well predicted when shared fluctuations are mostly inherited from the upstream area. Interestingly, examination of spiking activity reveals that, even in the scenario with apparent disrupted communication, the downstream area is effectively driven by upstream activity, as expected from the strong feedforward connection strengths between layers. A mismatch in within-area dimensionality between upstream and downstream areas appears to underlie the seemingly weak communication. These results expose the limitations of linear measures when analyzing the flow of information in brain circuits with diverse neuronal dynamics. *Please note that this meeting is open to all neuroscience postdocs and PhD students, regardless of location or SCGB affiliation (sorry, no PIs). *After Q&A with the speaker, we will open breakout rooms for anyone interested in staying to chat, network, or further discuss the talk. This position involves studies focused on analyzing recordings of population spiking activity captured from the human cortex in awake participants with drug resistant epilepsy who are receiving intracranial EEG (iEEG) electrodes to monitor seizure activity. Single unit spiking activity from populations of neurons are captured through implanted microelectrode arrays.
