*Dear all,* *We are delighted to announce that a half-day tutorial titled "Hands-on Tutorial on PyNN: A Simulator-Independent Language for Building Neuronal Network Models" will be held at the 32nd Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting (CNS*2023 conference) in Leipzig, Germany. We invite all registered participants to join the tutorial, which will take place on the first day of the meeting, 15 July 2023, just before the main event.* *Computational neuroscientists have developed a diversity of software platforms for simulating neural network models at different scales. However, each simulator has its own programming or configuration language, leading to considerable difficulty in porting models from one simulator to another. A common programming interface to multiple simulators would help to reduce or eliminate the problems of simulator diversity while retaining the benefits. Dear colleagues, We have several openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to work at the intersection of Machine Learning and Computational Neuroscience funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant “DeepCoMechTome: Using deep learning to understand computations in neural circuits with Connectome-constrained Mechanistic Models“. The goal of DeepCoMechTome is to develop simulation-based machine learning tools that will make it possible to build neural network models that are both biologically realistic and computationally powerful. PhD position - Model-predictive control of brain plasticity for optimal non-invasive brain stimulation

About the Project Neuroplasticity is the mechanism that underpins the brain’s ability to learn or recover from traumatic events, but also its deterioration underlies several Neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses. It is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple processes occurring at different spatial and temporal scales (1, 2). The most commonly discussed type of plasticity is long-term potentiation (LTP) which is defined as an increase in efficacy between synapses of two neurons. Experiments designed to measure LTP are often done in cell slices or cultures using patch-clamp techniques. However, we often want to promote (and measure) plasticity in humans in-vivo but it is not clear how changes in synaptic efficacy manifest in macroscopic non-invasive imaging measurements such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), or electroencephalography (EEG) that are available for use in humans. This project aims to link our detailed cellular-level knowledge of plasticity processes with systems-level observations in humans and is focused on answering the following 2 questions: 1. How can we modulate plasticity non-invasively in the brain? 2. How can we measure plasticity in vivo? To answer these questions you will combine mathematical/computational modelling of biophysically realistic large-scale neural networks that exhibit plasticity with cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to test the model predictions. The model will be adapted so that its output can be compared to the three major imaging techniques described above and you will determine how changes in connectivity between and within brain regions in the model predict changes in our imaging metrics. There will be a particular focus on developing an EEG marker of plasticity as this currently does not exist. Finally, you will test the model predictions in an imaging study combining brain stimulation, EEG, MRI and MRS in a proof-of-concept experiment in humans. This will provide us with a deeper understanding of how to modulate and measure plasticity that can be deployed in the future for medical applications of brain stimulation such as in Parkinson’s disease, depression and pain control. Postdoctoral position in Human Visual Psychophysics with fMRI/MRI, (m/f/d) (TVöD-Bund E13, 100%) The Department of Sensory and Sensorimotor Systems (PI Prof. Li Zhaoping) at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and at the University of Tübingen is currently looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to work on projects aimed towards understanding visual attentional and perceptual processes using fMRI/MRI. The ICM is in the heart of Paris, France, part of the Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital, and has a vibrant, multidisciplinary, and internationally recognized neuroscience community. The Project: Our research mainly focuses on the cellular physiology of various elements of cortical microcircuits, the properties and plasticity of their synaptic connections and their contribution to the generation of various cognition-relevant network activities . Through our collaborators, we also study cortical circuit deficits in several animal model of brain disease. The lab uses a combination of single and multiple-cell electrophysiology, 2-photon imaging and electrophysiology in vivo, pharmacology, anatomy, immunocytochemistry, optical manipulations of specific neuron types and computational approaches (through established collaborations). Workshop abstract: The modeling of collective behavior within a neuronal population, initiated by the pioneering work of Wilson and Cowan, has been a great source of inspiration in the computational neuroscience community. Indeed, the focus on the overall neuronal activity of a brain structure, rather than on the detailed evolution of the electric response of single neurons, allows to adequately model a vast range of brain functions and opens the door to a mathematical understanding of the processes involved. Moreover, the spatio-temporal version of this model, known as neural fields, allows one to consider spatial heterogeneity within a cerebral structure, at the price of more demanding analysis tools. Neural fields have been used in the investigation of a wide range of applications, including the modeling of sensory cortices, cognition, human-robot interaction, self-organizing maps, visual hallucinations, and deep brain stimulation. PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher in Bio-inspired, Model-Based Reinforcement Learning Location: Institute of Neuroinformatics and ETH AI Center, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Start Date: As early as July 1, 2023 The Grewe lab (www.grewelab.org <http://www.grewelab.org/>) at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (www.ini.uzh.ch <http://www.ini.uzh.ch/en.html>) and the ETH AI Center (ai.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD or Postdoctoral position in the area of bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to our ongoing research endeavors to understand and model the complex and dynamic patterns of neuronal activity inspired by how the brain operates and solves tasks. Research Background: Our lab's research focuses on understanding how the brain alters its internal neuronal activity patterns that encode information across large neuronal ensembles to facilitate learning. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms underlying changes in network information processing related to learning a model of the external world. Given the inherent complexity, unreliability, and multidimensionality of neuronal activity patterns in the brain, this is a challenging endeavor. To better understand learning in the brain we employ in in vivo brain recording methods in mice (eg. mini-scopes) to characterise learning-induced changes in neuronal ensemble activity (RL in mice). Simultaneously, we develop biologically-inspired multi-layer (deep) artificial neuronal network models (ANNs) that mimic the information processing and storage capabilities observed in real biological networks (e.g. to solve an RL problem). We place significant emphasis on reverse-engineering neuronal network function at a very abstract level and on understanding the fundamental principles that determine learning-induced changes in neuronal networks (biological and artificial). Role Description: As a PhD or Postdoctoral fellow, you will be tasked with developing and implementing innovative bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Your role will involve close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of neuroscience and machine learning researchers at the Institute of Neuroinformatics and the ETH AI Center respectively. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Conduct/simulate RL experiments and analysis to test and refine these algorithms. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance our collective research goals. Present research findings at internal and external meetings and conferences. Contribute to the broader academic community through peer review and other service roles. Essential Qualifications: MSc or Ph.D. in Theoretical Neuroscience, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field (e.g. Physics). Some background in reinforcement learning, ideally model-based methods. Familiarity with bio-inspired neuronal network approaches to machine learning. Proven track record demonstrated by publications in reputable journals (PD only). Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Desirable Qualifications: Experience with computational or theoretical neuroscience and bio-inspired deep learning methods. Significance: The cerebellum is a critical structure for movement. We have previously shown that it is central in controlling pathological activity in epilepsy (Kros et al., Annals of Neurology 2015) and essential tremor (Yousif et al., PloS Comput Biol, 2017). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been used for decades to treat tremor (Benabid et al, 1998) and more recently epilepsy (Zangiabadi et al., Frontiers Neurology, 2019). However, DBS is a highly invasive surgical technique targeting the thalamus, a structure inaccessible by non-invasive neurostimulation. Rigour: The project would involve, 1) a detailed biophysical computational model of the cerebellum, based on our previous work, but extended to involve connected structures such as the thalamus; 2) experiments with human participants involving non-invasive electrical stimulation of the cerebellum during normal movement tasks to inform, validate and test the model. Together, this will lead to theoretically based, novel stimulation paradigms for a closed-loop system. Potential Contribution to Knowledge: We propose that cerebellar stimulation could provide a method of replacing DBS and inhibiting pathological brain activity, and that a model based closed-loop system would provide an optimal approach. The successful candidate will work with the team on developing several stress, sleep, and physical activity algorithms based on data from the Healthy Brain Study (HBS). The HBS is a prospective longitudinal cohort study that utilizes careful digital phenotyping in 1000 healthy participants. HBS combines bio-sampling, neuro-imaging and ecological momentary assessments to carefully assess several physiological, cognitive, affective and behavioural outcomes in both the laboratory and in real life with wearables. The PhD student will work on integrating these algorithms in an existing open source application for wearables in collaboration with patients and staff members from Forensic Psychiatry that will provide tailored, personalized insights and can be implemented in treatment settings. The PhD student will also carefully design several single case experiments to assess the efficacy and value of the open source application in (forensic) psychiatric treatment. This project is a collaboration between Donders Institute Radboud, Tilburg University, Fivoor, and de Borg and will be embedded in the infrastructure of the Donders Institute, providing a unique and stimulating learning environment for young researchers, including a high-profile graduate school and in-house methodological expert courses. Multiple Openings for Post-Doc, Research Assistant and PhD student in Neuromorphic, In-memory computing IC design using SRAM/RRAM (application to LSTM/SNN for Keyword spotting) There are multiple openings for Post-doc, Research Assistant and PhD students for a new project on In-memory Computing in the group of Professor Arindam Basu, Department of Electrical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. The focus of the project will be on in-memory computing implementations of neuromorphic algorithms for the application of LSTM/SNN for Keyword spotting using SRAM with extension to RRAM. In particular, novel In-memory ADC for nonlinear functions will be designed to push the state of the art. The candidate should have experience in doing analog/mixed-signal IC design with preference for experience in memory design. For Post-doctoral positions, experience with IC tapeout and measurement is a must. Making the odorant world intelligible - How its semantics can be characterized

Lazar, Tingkai Liu, Chung-Heng Yeh, PLoS Comput Biol 19(4): e1011043. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1011043 <https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1011043> Author summary A major challenge in the study of the Drosophila early olfactory sensory system is to determine how an odorant object (the smell of a rose) is reliably identified in the face of fluctuations of the concentration amplitude of the molecules within the odorant plume. More fundamentally, the question arises how semantic information, often associated with subjective perception, can be characterized. To address this challenge, we leveraged the unique combinatorial odorant code of Drosophila and presented a formal treatment of the identity of an odorant object as its semantic information (or semantics for short). Grounded in the physiology of the fly brain, we identified the functional roles played by Local Neurons in the fruit fly Antennal Lobe in the recovery of the semantics and the onset/offset timing information (or semantic timing). Our model of the Antennal Lobe circuit is built with a highly versatile canonical model of neural computation - the differential Divisive Normalization Processor. Dear Colleagues, The Decision and Memory group(decisionandmemory.org) at the Universitat Jaume I in Castelló de la Plana, Spain seeks a motivated postdoctoral scholar to study the influence of long-term memory processes on creativity and social cognition using computational cognitive science and cognitive neuroscience methods(neuroimaging, behavior, and computational models). The position is expected to last 2 years and involves applying social and semantic network models to data from novel online behavioral and fMRI paradigms. Competitive applicants will have a PhD in cognitive science, experimental psychology, mathematical psychology, computational neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field. Applicants are ideally looking to build innovative careers in academia or big data analysis in industry. Originating in 2009, CARLsim is now on its 6th major release. CARLsim supports CPU and GPU simulations ranging from small networks to networks with hundreds of thousands of neurons with millions of synaptic connections. It is supported on Linux, MacOS, and Windows. The software framework is open-source and freely available. We are looking for a postdoc to study single cell recordings in humans, performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery. The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons in the hippocampus and surrounding areas that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga, Cell 2019), which are involved in declarative memory functions. Hi all, A fully-funded, three-year postdoctoral position in theoretical neuroscience is now available at Bocconi University's Department of Computing Sciences in Milan, Italy. The postdoctoral researcher will have the chance to explore various research topics, such as movement modulation of visual responses in mice, integrating connectomes in mechanistic models of brain functions, and building normative models of neural representations, among others. The research will utilize cutting-edge approaches from statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, and machine learning, and will be informed by the latest electrophysiological and connectomic data. Prior experience with computational neuroscience is a plus, but it is not required. The postdoc will have the opportunity to become a part of the thriving neuroscience, machine learning, and computer science communities at Bocconi University. The Göttingen Campus Institute for Dynamics of Biological Networks (CIDBN)<https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/608362.html> invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biophysics (all genders welcome) The position will be full-time (currently 39,8 hours/week), German pay grade 13 TV-L, starting as soon as possible. The CIDBN Department "Physics of Biological Systems", headed by Prof. Fred Wolf, offers a fixed-term contract until June 30, 2025 with the perspective of an extension commensurate with building a competitive track record at the frontier of computational biophysics and neural circuit theory. Information is processed in brain circuits through the coordinated action of large-scale circuits of neurons and synapses. Ultimately, it is the nano-scale molecular architecture of neuronal synapses that can make or break the power of neural circuit computation. Progress in a broad suite of nanoscopy techniques is currently uncovering the molecular-level design of synapses subserving functions such as working memory or sensory coding. The spatio-temporal operation of these nano-machines and the efficiency of their design, however, remain to be understood and are core research aims of the Göttingen Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1286 "Quantitative Synaptology". We are inviting applications from theoretical biophysicists, molecular systems biologists, or computational scientists with an ambition to pioneer computational studies of synaptic functional design. We offer a stimulating environment of theoretical neuroscientists, neural data-scientists, and cutting-edge experimentalists associated with CRC 1286. In addition, the institute provides dedicated support for high-performance computing. We are dedicated to supporting the growth of original research personalities at the frontier of computational science and neural circuit theory. Intel Neuromorphic Deep Noise Suppression Challenge The Intel Neuromorphic Deep Noise Suppression Challenge has begun! Here the fundamental computation will be built on temporally sparse event codes to drastically reduce power requirements to be deployed on dedicated HW (expected about 10x-100x savings compared to other dedicated ASICs). Deep Noise Suppression is a ubiquitous real-time audio processing task with low power and imperceptible latency. A neuromorphic solution offering >10x lower power and smaller model sizes could extend battery lives, improve user experiences, and help shrink form factors of many PC/mobile/wearable devices. We are reiterating on the Microsoft Deep Noise suppression re-framing it into *Neuromorphic computing,* offering a novel neuromorphic baseline example improving on SI-SNR and reducing memory footprint by ~20x on previous MSFT DNS 2022 Challenge Baseline. If you can come up with the best algorithmic solution in simulation within six months or the best Loihi 2 demonstration within a year, you could win $15k and $40k respectively. *Call for Applications for CCN Junior Theoretical Neuroscientist Workshop* June 29-30, 2023 The Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation invites applications for our first Junior Theoretical Neuroscientist Workshop. The Junior Theoretical Neuroscientist’s workshop is a showcase for advanced PhD students and postdocs to share cutting-edge research and connect with the theoretical neuroscience community at the Flatiron Institute and the broader NYC area. We expect to select 8 trainees to participate in the workshop over June 29-30, 2023, at the Flatiron Institute (160 5th Ave, New York, NY), providing an extended opportunity to exchange ideas within a small group setting. Each participant will contribute a 30 minute research talk followed by a 40 minute interactive discussion of the technical details behind the work. Through these interactions and unstructured meeting times, participants will receive valuable feedback from their peers as well as the broader Flatiron community. Postdoc/PhD positions in Toulouse (France): Deep learning models of the Global Workspace

Multiple postdoctoral and PhD positions are available in an ERC-funded project exploring deep-learning implementations of the Global Workspace theory. We are seeking highly motivated and dedicated students and post-docs to join our group in Toulouse, France. Successful candidates will have formal training in AI, Computer Science or related fields (e.g. computational neuroscience), and a keen interest in cognitive neuroscience. Our ERC Advanced Grant "GLoW" aims to take inspiration from neuroscience and cognitive theories to build deep neural network models of cognition, capable of integrating or "grounding" information across sensory and linguistic modalities, and of displaying flexible cognitive behavior. We will also use advanced AI models to improve the decoding and understanding of brain activity. Why are brains the way they are? Do neural circuits function in an “optimal” way, and if so, in what sense are they optimal? How do brains encode sensory information and form associative memories? Andrew Lin's lab at the University of Sheffield is seeking postdoctoral research associates to study these fundamental questions in neuroscience in the olfactory system of the fruit fly Drosophila. We aim to discover neuronal plasticity mechanisms that underlie associative memory and the maintenance of optimal sensory coding, in the Drosophila mushroom body (the fly’s olfactory memory centre). Of special note to the comp-neuro email list, we are particularly looking for at least one of the postdocs we hire to have expertise in computational neuroscience. We seek to tie computational models of what plasticity rules would be ‘optimal’ for memory, with experiments testing whether the real brain actually uses these ‘optimal’ rules. This research will use a range of techniques including: in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology, fly genetics, behavioural experiments, computational modelling and building custom equipment. The exact project can be tailored to your background, but expertise in at least some of these techniques is essential, along with a PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent experience), excellent communication skills and an ability to work in a team. The Humphries’ lab at the University of Nottingham is seeking a postdoc to study the neural basis of foraging, in collaboration with the groups of Matthew Apps (Birmingham) and Nathan Lepora (Bristol). Whether choosing to leave one shop for another, switching TV programs, or seeking berries to eat, humans and other animals make innumerable stay-or-leave decisions, but how we make them is not well understood. The goal of this project is to develop new computational accounts of stay-or-leave decisions, and use them to test hypotheses for how humans, primates, and rodents learn and make these decisions. The work will draw on and develop new reinforcement learning and accumulation (e.g. diffusion) models of decision-making. The human intracranial EEG Laboratory at The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research – Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in New York is looking for one research assistant to start as soon as possible and by June 2023. The successful candidate will help with the lab’s research into (1) improving the identification of functional and pathological brain regions in individuals suffering from epilepsy, (2) the neural mechanisms of cognition, and (3) the characterization of macroscale human brain networks. The lab works exclusively with patients being evaluated for epilepsy surgery using methods such as invasive stereo EEG and electrocorticography recordings (iEEG, ECoG), anatomical MRI, fMRI, DTI, and direct electrical brain stimulation. The responsibilities will include assisting with the collection and analysis of the aforementioned data, project management, assistance with grant applications and progress reports, help with analysis of neural and imaging data using existing scripts (Matlab, Python), further development of those scripts (depending on coding and signal processing proficiency), and helping to present lab findings at conferences and in journals. It has recently attracted the attention of researchers who have been working in information and communication technologies (ICT) and striving to create cooperative ‘nanonetworks’ of artificial nanomachines, which can be interfaced with or immersed in natural biological systems. Application of ICT tools to this natural modality of communications has laid the foundations of bio-inspired, engineered MC systems, and also contributed to the understanding of natural MC networks. It is no wonder that such fundamental form of communications has been a topic of significant interest in many diverse research fields beyond ICT, such as synthetic biology, systems chemistry, micro/nanorobotics, network medicine, biophysics and physiology, biochemical sensing, lab- and organ-on-chips, bio-interfaces, molecular and biological computing, drug discovery, design and delivery. However, different languages are typically adopted by different fields to refer to the same phenomenon that the ICT researchers call molecular communications, such as chemical communications, biological/cell signaling, interaction networks, which all fundamentally denote information transfer via mass transport and/or biochemical reactions and interactions. Despite the significant overlap in the problem and the application domain, not only the language but also the research methodologies and the solution approaches are diverse, partly due to the apparent lack of strong links between different research communities. On the other hand, closer interactions between these disciplines can create important synergies that can help collaboratively target more challenging research problems and develop unprecedented applications, where the power of true interdisciplinarity is unleashed. These interactions can also help better identify the common motifs in the heterogeneous sea of molecular communication problems and scenarios comprising both biotic and abiotic systems, and help reframe and standardize the way we approach biological and bio-inspired communications in the hope of enabling a common scientific and engineering language. The aim of this Special Issue is to facilitate such interactions by bringing together the contributions of prominent researchers from diverse fields that share a common denominator with the ICT approach to MC. This is a collaborative project with the Johns Hopkins Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Allen Institute for Brain Research in Seattle, WA. Project: Deep learning has achieved impressive performance in many tasks which is driven by the capacity for backpropagation to “assign credit” to a vast array of parameters. This achievement is obtained at the cost of large energy consumption and many needed examples for learning. Furthermore, machine learning performance still pales in comparison with the energy efficiency and capacity to generalize when compared to biological systems. In this project, we will use mechanisms of selective attention, akin to those used in biological cognition, to constrain and direct the task of credit assignment during learning. Our laboratories have established a close and fruitful experimental-theoretical collaboration for a decade, and offer a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise in computational neuroscience, including both advanced neural analysis techniques and neural network modeling. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. Postdoc & PhD positions in TU Darmstadt, Germany After 14 years as faculty at the University of California (San Diego), Prof. Angela Yu has recently joined TU Darmstadt as an Alexander von Humboldt AI Professor. Immediately available, and for the foreseeable future, are multiple positions for: Postdocs PhD students Master’s students Interns Research assistants Prof. Yu’s group conducts research at the intersection of natural and artificial intelligence. Her group uses mathematically rigorous and algorithmically diverse tools to understand the nature of representation and computations that give rise to intelligent behavior, with particular regard to the challenges posed by inferential uncertainty and the opportunities afforded by volitional movement. Using diverse machine learning and statistical tools, e.g. Bayesian statistical modeling, control theory, reinforcement learning, and information theory, theoretical frameworks and mathematical models are developed to explain various aspects of cognition important for intelligence: perception, attention, decision-making, learning, cognitive control, active sensing, economic behavior, and social interactions. Some example research questions currently pursued in the group include: - How does the ability to move and interact with the world facilitate perception, decision making, and representation learning? - Are human attention and working memory capacity limitation bugs or features? - How do humans represent and process faces? - How does the brain learn a general-purpose representation with so little labeled data and in the absence of concrete tasks? - How are humans so good at problem solving and logical reasoning, and yet also prone to certain fallacies and illusion in cognition & perception? - What do IQ tests actually measure and what light can they shed on AI research? - What roles do intrinsic motivations such as curiosity and emotions play in intelligence? With her expertise in computational neuroscience and cognitive science, as well as her previous experience in computational modeling and collaborations with psychologists, psychiatrists, neuroscientists, computer scientists, and mathematicians, Dr. Yu will strengthen and complement research at the Centre for Cognitive Science at TU Darmstadt and at hessian.AI, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence of Hesse based in Darmstadt. Her group members are encouraged and expected to collaborate extensively with preeminent researchers in cognitive science, AI, neuroscience, and related fields in Darmstadt and nearby research centers (Frankfurt, Mainz, Marburg, Gießen, Heidelberg, Tübingen, etc.). PhD position in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning at IT University of Copenhagen (deadline April 1st)

Full-time PhD position at IT University of Copenhagen, under the umbrella of the Pioneer Centre for AI, Denmark, starting in Summer-Autumn 2023. Topic: Modelling compositional language structures across languages. The origin of language development of human beings can at least be traced back to two sources: the survival needs for communication and the unique wiring of human brains. The two factors can co-develop with each other through life-span. Nevertheless, languages from the whole world are with tremendous diversity. Yet, given the fact that all human brains share very similar structures and connection patterns, which presumably afford for similar ways to encode and decode information from the external world, there likely exist some hidden common structures, like some word orders or numbers of phonemes in a language, that are shared at least within, or even across, language families. An important constraint for these similar structures comes from the theory that the brain is processing language embodied in all our senses and via processing streams that are also involved in a range of other cognitive functions from specific motor control up to general problem-solving. This suggests that language comprehension and production, in fact, developed on top of existing information processing schemes, which in turn might have similarly shaped how the different language families have developed. A particular mechanism that was recently hypothesized to give rise to the structure of the brain’s sequence processing is temporal compositionality and chunking, which seemingly operate on language sequences as well. With this PhD project, we want to identify and describe the specific, latent temporal encoding structures that may constrain the temporal features of spoken language. In this project, the candidate will study structure patterns in spoken language and investigate how to build a model that can extract temporal characteristics of speech across different languages. Since the project is interdisciplinary, active collaboration within the Pioneer Centre for AI, as well as with experts in computational neuroscience and developmental psychology in Germany and Japan are planned. Application details: The ideal candidate should have a Masters in Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Computational Linguistics, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Science or related fields, as well as a strong interest in interdisciplinary research, at the intersection of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Psycholinguistics. The salary scale will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations for a full-time position. Best regards, Asohan Amarasingham FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT The Department of Psychology at the City College of New York (CCNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in computational neuroscience at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2023. The CCNY Psychology Department is a vibrant, diverse department located in Harlem, serving over 2000 undergraduate majors, with master's programs in General Psychology and Mental Health Counseling, a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology, and is affiliated with Ph.D. programs in Psychology and Neuroscience at the CUNY Graduate Center. The ideal candidate will use an innovative combination of computational, data-analytic, and/or modeling techniques to better understand how the brain gives rise to cognitive phenomena. All areas of relevance to cognitive neuroscience are of interest, including but not limited to: sensation, perception, emotion, memory, language, learning and reward, and consciousness. Successful applicants will be encouraged to participate in all programs the Department offers and to pursue interdisciplinary collaborations within and across the program, the department, and other departments at the College, including the Grove School of Engineering, the CUNY School of Medicine, and many related programs at the CUNY Graduate Center, including the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, the Initiative for Theoretical Sciences, and allied doctoral and master's programs that span the sciences. They will be responsible for teaching, research, and mentorship/advisement duties. They also will share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions. QUALIFICATIONS A Ph.D. in psychology, neuroscience, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a similarly allied field is required. The candidate is expected to maintain an active program of research, publish theoretical and empirical research in top-tier journals, be committed to both undergraduate and graduate education, and provide mentoring/advisement to students. Potential for obtaining external grant support is essential. Also required is the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
