Lorentz Center symposium "Brain and Organisms, Neuroscience beyond Computation"

Dear all, we are still taking registrations for our Lorentz Center Symposium "Brain and Organisms, Neuroscience beyond Computation" to be held in Leiden 16 to 20 March 2026. Since the 1990s, that were designated as the “Decade of the brain” new technologies have generate a wealth of empirical data unimaginable before. Yet that era’s hopes for a new understanding of the brain that would translate into effective treatment for a number of brain disorders seem to be put on hold. The currently slow progress of brain theory, and, relatedly, of clinical innovation has, in our opinion, a key cause in reductionist, and reductive dominant paradigm which looks at “brain machinery” in isolation, without paying much attention to the link between the brain and the physiology of the whole organism, and to the social-ecological environment in which natural brains operate. The symposium will bring together mathematicians, philosophers, computer scientists, and experimental neuroscientists to identify how a broader perspective on brain-organism-environment may help formulating new conceptual tools, and novel experimental paradigms. The sessions will progress from debating to value of current computational and modeling trends, to highly conceptual and theoretical perspective of the biological brain and ending with the discussing how the brain integrates into the organism as a whole, and into a social network in individuals. We hope to formulate new ideas, which will be summarized for example in a special issue of a prominent academic journal. Over three weeks, students will delve deeply into the topic of collective behaviour with lectures, hands-on tutorials, and projects, making it a unique and unforgettable experience. The school faculty will cover collective behaviours across a variety of species from cells, worms, drosophila, fish to non – human primates and human. A set of tutorials delving into state-of-the-art quantitative methods used to study collective behaviour will complement the lectures. At the end of the school, students will work on independent projects guided by our resident faculty and tutors. The Konstanz School of Collective Behaviour is intended for graduate students, doctoral researchers, and early postdoctoral researchers. We consider applicants with strong quantitative background including but not limited to physics, computer science, mathematics and engineering. Applicants with biological and experimental background will be considered if they demonstrate in their application extensive quantitative and mathematical background as the focus of the school is quantitative study of collective behaviours. Accommodation will be provided and paid by the organizers. A limited number of travel support will be provided and a registration fee will be due (500 Euros) once the student is admitted to the Konstanz School of Collective Behaviour. Postdoctoral Position - Computational Models of Hearing

The Physiological Acoustics Lab<http://escabilab.uconn.edu/> (http://escabilab.uconn.edu) at the University of Connecticut seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position in systems and computational neuroscience. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES We are seeking highly motivated and creative applicants who can lead a project on Misophonia, a psychological and behavioral disorder in which individuals experience adverse emotional reactions to specific sounds (“auditory triggers”). The broad project goal is to develop computational models of hearing and perception that are fitted to human perceptual measurements and that can be used to characterize and diagnose misophonia. The models will also be used to develop sound processing tools to remove and de-emphasize auditory triggers (e.g., with headphones) and improve participant outcomes. The project will use a variety of approaches, including human perceptual experiments, machine learning, digital signal processing, and computational models of hearing. UConn has a vibrant neuroscience community, and there are opportunities for collaboration between departments, institutes, and Universities involved in the project. The primary appointment is in Biomedical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the Behavioral Neuroscience program in the Psychological Sciences department (Ian Stevenson), the Electrical and Computer Engineering/Biomedical Engineering departments at the University of Connecticut (Monty Escabí), and the Connecticut Institute for Brain and Cognitive Sciences. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * A PhD in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience, or a related field is required. * Experience with experimental design, data analysis, and/or modeling. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Previous experience, education, or general proven knowledge in hearing or speech and language sciences. * Interdisciplinary research experience in computational and systems neuroscience with prior research experience in human behavior, animal behavior and/or brain physiology. * A strong analytic background, particularly in modeling neural systems and analyzing large datasets. * Experience with acoustic signal processing, sound recognition, and machine learning. This year, the virtual edition enables students to attend from afar by formal lectures via Zoom and informal and social communications via a Slack channel. Systems Vision Science combines computational, behavioral, and neuroscience methods to discover functions and algorithms for vision in various brain regions and their implementations in neural circuits. This summer school is designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models. I am seeking candidates for fully funded postdoctoral and PhD positions in computational neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The successful candidates will conduct research in my computational laboratory (Institute for Neural Information Processing) at UKE: https://www.uke.de/english/departments-institutes/institutes/department-of-… We will investigate, by developing and using advanced machine learning methods and neural network models, how populations of neurons (and of glia) in the brain encode information and use it to produce behaviors. We offer a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise in computational neuroscience. We also offers a high-quality and well-funded research environment including a network of international experimental collaborators such as Prof. Christopher Harvey at Harvard Medical School, Prof. Tommaso Fellin at IIT Italy, and Prof. Mriganka Sur at MIT. We seek candidates with a solid computational background and a keen interest in neuroscience. They must be highly motivated and creative individuals who want to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment and be willing to interact with both experimental and theoretical neuroscientists. PhD position on multiscale theory of spiking neural networks for modeling human language

As previously announced, a PhD position on spiking neural network theory is available in the group of Prof. Tilo Schwalger at the Technical University Berlin and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (https://page.math.tu-berlin.de/~schwalge) Germany. The position is now open for applications. The position is offered in the context of the project The Role of Long-Range Brain Connectivity in Human Language Processing (ConnLingua), a collaboration between the Technical University Berlin, the Max-Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (Leipzig), the Technical University Chemnitz, and the Czech Acedemy of Science (Prague). Within this project, we will use spiking neural network models for cortical microcircuits, models of working memory and advanced mean-field methods to develop a whole-brain model that elucidates the neural mechanisms of syntactic language operations. At the Bernstein center, we offer a structured program guiding doctoral researchers through the PhD work and plenty of opportunities for collaborations.
