Dr. Sha’s lab (https://shazhiqiang.wixsite.com/sha-lab) at the University of South Carolina is seeking *a full-time Research Assistant (computation-focused)*. Our lab is affiliated with the Carolina Autism & Neurodevelopment Center, the Institute for Mind & Brain, and working closely with the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging in Columbia, the center of SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Our lab explores the mechanisms of atypical brain development and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorders) by leveraging computation modeling to bridge neural circuitry, exposure (e.g., early life adversity) and psychopathological phenotypes, and treatment outcomes. These innovative projects will leverage state-of-the-art computational models and deep learning algorithms, supported by the Brain Imaging Center (with 3T and high-field 7T MRI scanners) and the Biobehavioral Research Center. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated student to gain hands-on experience with neuroimaging (e.g., MRI) and computational modeling (e.g., deep learning models), making it ideal preparation for a future graduate or medical career. Research Assistant will be actively involved in the scientific process and are encouraged to contribute meaningfully to publications. We fully support research assistants in leading first-author publications and presenting their work at international conferences. Beyond their established role in synaptic plasticity, spines have been hypothesized to contribute to the formation of connectivity by enabling dendrites to contact more distant axons. This raises the possibility of a direct relationship between local network topology and spine morphology at the level of individual neurons. Understanding this relationship is central to explaining how structured, non-random connectivity emerges in cortical microcircuits. In this webinar, we will investigate this hypothesis using electron microscopy data from the MICrONS project within the Open Brain Institute Virtual Labs framework. Specifically, we will: * Analyze the MICrONS connectome using adjacency matrices and Python-based motif detection methods * Identify neurons with high participation in specific connectivity motifs * Reconstruct neuronal morphology using OBI skeletonization and spine extraction tools * Quantify spine density and morphology in relation to motif participation We will test the following hypotheses: * Neuronal participation in motifs is correlated with spine density * Synaptic participation in motifs is correlated with spine size This workflow provides a concrete connectomics pipeline linking network structure to synaptic anatomy. Finally, we will outline a follow-up study leveraging Virtual Labs for biophysical simulations of the reconstructed neurons, enabling investigation of how motif participation and spine structure influence synaptic integration. We are opening *2 remote internship position t*o join our team at the forefront of *open research in NeuroAI*. Our work explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), using both invasive and non-invasive neural recordings. As part of Tether Evo, you will contribute to high-impact, open-source projects focused on *encoding* and *decoding brain activity* leveraging AI. Our mission is to advance scientific understanding while building real-world applications for neural interfaces, guided by transparency, accessibility, and collaboration. *Projects*: 1) Compositional Structure in Speech-Related Neural Signals (6 months) — We are seeking an intern to investigate whether speech-related neural activity exhibits a compositional structure, where smaller reusable units such as phonemes combine to form larger units such as words. Recent work by Narasimha et al. in intracortical BCI has shown that neural activity underlying attempted handwriting contains reusable motif-like structure and that explicitly modeling this structure can improve decoding generalization and sample efficiency, particularly in low-data settings. Building on this idea, this project will ask whether an analogous organization exists in speech-related neural signals. A central challenge is that the available speech labels do not provide precise word- or phoneme-level timestamps, so the first phase of the project will focus on developing methods to segment continuous neural recordings into approximate intervals corresponding to individual speech units. Once such alignments are established, the project will analyze whether shared phonemic content across different words is reflected in shared neural structure—for example, whether the neural activity corresponding to the “book” portion of *NOTEBOOK* and *COOKBOOK* is more similar than the activity corresponding to their non-overlapping parts. 2) Bidirectional Modeling of Cursor Control from Human Intracortical Data *(3 months)* — This project will develop models for both decoding and simulating cursor-control neural activity from human intracortical recordings. Using publicly available datasets from Karpowicz et al. and Wilson et al., the first phase will focus on building a neural decoder that translates neural activity into cursor kinematics, including position and velocity. After achieving reliable decoding performance, the second phase will develop a neural encoder that predicts plausible neural activity from an intended cursor trajectory. The final goal is to integrate both models into a demonstration application that can simulate end-to-end cursor control, using either recorded neural data or synthetic neural activity generated by the encoder, and thereby provide a practical testbed for studying cursor BCI behavior in both real and simulated settings. *What We’re Looking For:* - Candidates doing a PhD in computational neuroscience, AI, computer science, mathematics or similar fields, towards the end of their program and that could enroll in a 3-6 months industry internship. Also exceptional MSc or people that finished their PhD in the last year are eligible for the positions. - Strong proficiency in Python and PyTorch. Experience with object-oriented programming and knowledge of *software engineering best practices for machine learning research (version control, testing, experiment tracking, reproducibility, and modular code design)*. However, many of today’s wearable computing and human–machine interfaces still feel “smart, yet not quite helpful.” They are often fragmented, difficult to personalize, and frequently struggle to transform rich but noisy multimodal signals, such as physiology (e.g., heart rate, neural/muscle activity), body movement, and environmental context, into reliable, meaningful real-world support. At the same time, generative AI and foundation/world models are reshaping the landscape, shifting the paradigm beyond isolated sensors and single-purpose algorithms toward integrated, adaptive, context-aware Human–AI–Machine systems. To make the use of these technologies feel like a natural extension of ourselves, this workshop brings together researchers and practitioners across biosensing and measurement, neuroscience, AI, robotics, ubiquitous computing, and human-centered design to define the next frontier of Empowered Co-Intelligence: wearable interfaces that fuse three complementary “intelligences”—(1) biological intelligence, to infer human state and intent by modeling how people naturally think and behave; (2) physical/embodied intelligence, which understands body dynamics and real-world physics so interaction and assistance remain safe and effective; and (3) spatial intelligence, to leverage nearby sensors, IoT devices and smart environments for continuous situational awareness. These capabilities are further amplified by generative AI—models trained on large-scale data that can integrate heterogeneous signals to predict, reason, and adapt—enabling systems to become more personalized and context-aware. Together, these capabilities can overcome the limits of noisy on-body sensing and constrained wearable computing by turning fragmented measurements into coherent, actionable assistance. Our vision is an AI that operates quietly in the background, like an invisible layer of artificial cortex, running in parallel with our own cerebral cortex and coordinating across different lobes: not simply following rules, but learning your patterns, anticipating your needs, and adjusting in real time. The result is 24/7 support for thinking, decision-making, and physical action that feels intuitive, seamless, and requires minimal cognitive effort. Beyond new algorithms, we also emphasize human-centered evaluation, trust, accessibility, and inclusive augmentation, with the goal of accelerating research that advances wearable computing into reliable, scalable, and equitable systems—technologies that truly co-evolve with users over time. Topics of Interest We welcome research papers, short/WiP papers, and position/vision papers on (but not limited to) the following areas aligned with multimodal perception–decision–action cycles, shared autonomy, personalization, safety, and real-world robustness on wearable technologies. Hello! We would like to remind you that the deadline to apply for our workshop - What is a neuron? - is due tomorrow, April 2nd! The goal of this series is to take a fresh look at the basic assumptions held in our field. In the first workshop, we will ask the most fundamental question: *What is a neuron? *What properties should a cell have to be defined as such? An answer to this question may seem obvious at first: it has to be a cell that uses electrical signals, is connected to other neurons by synapses, and has extended processes—axons and dendrites. But the deeper we dig, the more challenging counterexamples we encounter: clearly non-neural cells using action potentials; neurons without axons or dendrites; or whole nerve nets in jellyfish that form a syncytium. And what defines a neuron during development, and how do its developmental pathways differ from those of other cells? Can we draw clear boundaries between neural and non-neural states? Things are no easier in an artificial neural network: what exactly is a processing unit in an ANN? How does it correspond to a biological neuron, and what can we learn from these models? The aim of this workshop is to look closely at different ways of defining a biological or artificial neuron and try to have a fresh look at our basic assumptions. This workshop will be held in the spirit of our Schools of Ideas—with an informal atmosphere, open exchange of thoughts and perspectives, in-depth talks, and plenty of space for discussion. Mark Humphries’ lab<https://www.humphries-lab.org> at the University of Nottingham is seeking a research assistant to join a project on the neural computations of foraging decisions, in collaboration with the groups of Matthew Apps (Birmingham) and Nathan Lepora (Bristol). Whether choosing to leave one shop for another, switching TV programs, or seeking berries to eat, humans and other animals make endless stay-or-leave decisions, but how we make them is not well understood. The goal of this project is to find out if there is a common decision algorithm for leaving across species and what that algorithm is. You will create predictions for how foragers should vary in their stay-of-leave decisions for different types of decision algorithm, and test them using data from humans and rodents tackling foraging tasks. You will have some experience in computational modelling of behaviour, such as decision-making models or reinforcement learning, and good programming skills. Postdoctoral Position in Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience: Flexible, Theory-Driven Research Program on Human Perception and Cognition We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position in our lab at Boston University, directed by Rob Reinhart (website: https://reinhartlab.org/) Our work focuses on the computational and neural mechanisms of human perception and cognition. This position is supported by fully flexible research resources, offering an unusually high degree of freedom to co-develop a research program that most excites the postdoc and draws deeply on their expertise, in close intellectual partnership with the PI. The lab is fundamentally a basic science training environment, oriented toward building representational computational accounts of cognition. Our central goal is not merely to describe behavior and its correlates, but to identify and test the internal representations and operations that constitute the cognitive phenotype, and to articulate the causal mechanisms by which these representations are implemented in neural systems. Research Approach Our work aims to integrate: (1) Causal perturbation of neural systems, including high-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) and temporal interference (TI) stimulation, to directly test mechanistic hypotheses. (2) Computational modeling across levels, including: Electric field models, Formal and normative models, Cognitive models, Neural spiking models and neural mass models. (3) Rich, theory-driven experimental design, using behavioral measures (e.g., psychophysics, eye movements) that feed directly into computational models, with behavior serving as a window into latent representational structure rather than an endpoint of interest. (4) Human neuroscience methods, including EEG and fMRI, integrated with perturbation and modeling. (5) Advanced machine learning and multivariate analysis, including representational similarity analysis (RSA), multivariate decoding and encoding models, pattern component modeling (PCM), cross-validated model comparison, dimensionality-reduction and manifold-learning methods, regularized and probabilistic models, and related techniques for interrogating representational geometry and latent structure in neural and behavioral data. Intellectual Environment The lab values theoretical clarity, mechanistic explanation, and close coupling between experiment and model. We are especially interested in candidates who think carefully about: (1) What representations are being computed? (2) What operations transform them? (3) How these computations are implemented neurally. (4) How causal perturbation constrains theory. The postdoc will have substantial latitude to shape the direction of their research, develop new paradigms or modeling approaches, and pursue questions that cut across cognition, computation, and neuroscience. Qualifications We welcome applicants from a broad range of academic backgrounds relevant to the study of cognition, including cognitive neuroscience, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, and linguistics. Applicants with strong theoretical and computational training from related fields such as physics, applied mathematics, or computer science who are motivated to translate this expertise to questions in cognitive neuroscience are also encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will have: (1) a strong interest in computational and mechanistic explanations of cognition; (2) experience with at least one of the following: computational modeling, EEG/fMRI, brain stimulation, advanced data analysis, or experimental design; and (3) a desire for deep, theory-driven training. Training and Career Development This position is designed as a launchpad for independent academic research careers, with the goal of preparing scholars for tenure-track faculty positions at R01 universities. Training emphasizes intellectual ownership, methodological breadth, and rigorous theoretical foundations, with close mentorship paired with strong encouragement to develop a distinctive research identity. The Reinhart Laboratory is embedded within a highly interdisciplinary research environment at Boston University, with connections spanning human neuroscience, electrophysiology, and computational neuroscience across Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Dr. Reinhart holds a secondary appointment in Biomedical Engineering and is an active member of multiple interdisciplinary research centers that support cross-field collaboration and independent research development. Right after ASSC 2026, we are organizing Consciousness Commons: Building Collaborative Science with Open Consciousness Data, a two-day satellite workshop in Santiago, Chile (July 4–5, 2026). Consciousness Commons is designed for early-career researchers who want to move from ideas to concrete research. Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants will develop hypothesis-driven projects using openly available datasets, including those from the Cogitate consortium, with a strong focus on reproducibility and preregistration. In this talk, we look at how networks in the spinal cord generate movement. In particular, we address the fundamental yet poorly understood question of motor control: How can rhythmic movements, such as walking, be generated and stopped at any point in the cycle while posture is preserved? Since conventional models of spinal motor function rely on alternation between flexor and extensor modules, which are limited to just two phases, this question exposes the essential shortcoming of the conventional understanding: How can a system with only two phases generate and stop walking in any phase? To address this question and better understand the generation and stopping of motor activity, we use Neuropixels probes in the rat spinal cord during voluntary, freely moving locomotion. We utilize optogenetic activation of a brainstem nucleus to induce stopping. During locomotion, neuronal manifold activity exhibits robust rotational patterns that are topologically invariant with respect to speed (Linden 2022). Furthermore, this trajectory converges on a stable point-attractor precisely at the moment of arrest, and it persists until the movement is resumed. Through computational modeling, we propose that the walk-to-stop represents a bifurcation from a limit cycle to a fixed point attractor. We also propose a structural network mechanism for its physical implementation (Komi 2026). The structural mechanism entails a longitudinal projectome with a skewed Mexican hat topology, i.e., primarily local recurrent excitation and longer-range inhibition. Such a network can generate motor patterns via traveling waves, with frequency and amplitude controlled independently, and rhythm induced without requiring cellular pacemaker mechanisms. Together, our experimental observations support a new theory for the mechanism behind the generation of movement by networks in the spinal cord. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. PhD Position — Digital Twins for Brain Health Neuroscience PhD Program (Health Sciences), University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), Palma de Mallorca, Spain. https://edoctorat.uib.es/es/doctorat/TNEU/ We offer a fully funded PhD position focused on developing biophysical digital twins using M/EEG and fMRI data for large-scale in silico treatment evaluation in aging, neurodegenerative, and other brain conditions. This is a fully computational PhD involving intensive modelling and data analysis, combining computational neuroscience and precision medicine for in silico treatment discovery. The project uses large international clinical datasets (>6000 participants) and aims to develop model-based markers of treatment susceptibility with a focus in heterogeneous populations. Research will take place at IFISC (UIB–CSIC), a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence internationally recognized for research in complex systems, dynamical systems, statistical physics, and network science, with applications ranging from neuroscience and biology to social and technological systems. The project will be developed in collaboration with research groups from the Department of Psychology at the University of the Balearic Islands, with access to HPC resources and an international collaboration network including INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, Trinity College Dublin, Imperial College London, BrainLat, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Paris Brain Institute, among others. As part of the DFG Cluster of Excellence "The Adaptive Mind" (TAM), a four-year PhD-student position is available in the lab of Constantin Rothkopf at TU Darmstadt. In TAM (https://theadaptivemind-excellencecluster.de/) the universities of Giessen, Marburg, and Darmstadt, in collaboration with the University of Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS), conduct interdisciplinary research in mind, brain, and behavior. We combine state-of-the-art behavioral and neurophysiological research with approaches from psychiatry and clinical psychology, as well as quantitative analyses and computational modeling using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. We measure and model the continuous adaptation of natural human behavior in a constantly changing and unpredictable world. Possible research directions include human navigation under uncertainty, active learning and active sensing, sensorimotor control and intuitive physics, and causal reasoning in natural behavior. Our research environment includes large-scale VR and naturalistic experimental setups, infrastructure for tracking eye and body movements, strong collaborations in cognitive science, neuroscience, and AI, and access to excellent computing infrastructure. Our group (https://www.pip.tu-darmstadt.de) is part of the Centre for Cognitive Science and the AI Center at TU Darmstadt, which are home to an internationally outstanding group of PIs and junior researchers working in the areas of computational cognitive science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Adopting a developmental cascade framework, I will describe how infants’ attention changes during the first year, and how those changes are shaped by other developmental changes and how changes in visual attention contribute to development in other domains. Short Bio: Lisa Oakes received her BA in Psychology from UCSD and PhD in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. After 15 years as a faculty member at the department of psychology at the University of Iowa, she moved to UC Davis where she is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology and a Faculty Researcher at the Center for Mind and Brain. Dr. Oakes’s work examines cognitive development in infancy, with a particular focus on visual cognitive processes including perception, categorization, and attention. She has written over 100 articles and chapters, edited three volumes, and with David Rakison wrote Developmental cascades: Building the infant mind, which was the 2022 winner of the Eleanor Maccoby Book Award in Developmental Psychology awarded by APA Division 7. She recently wrote a textbook on infant development with Vanessa Lobue and Marianella Casasola entitled Infancy: The development of the whole child. She is the past-president of the International Congress of Infant Studies and currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the journal Infancy. The project investigates how complex neural dynamics support information processing in the brain by combining computational analysis of neural recordings with mechanistic modeling of neural circuits. The recruited researcher will primarily develop spiking network models to study how transient oscillatory activity shapes information flow, trajectory selection, and attention-like weighting of sequential inputs in distributed neural systems. In parallel, they will contribute to the analysis of hippocampal electrophysiological recordings collected during behavior, linking neuronal assemblies and oscillatory patterns to behavior and working memory. Depending on interests and progress, the work may also extend to the study of interactions between the hippocampus and its wider brain network using large-scale neural recordings, or to the comparison between control and pathological mouse models. Dear all, We are happy to announce the opening of a PhD position in the group of Dr. Demian Battaglia within the Functional System Dynamics team at the University of Strasbourg, France ( [ https://funsyteam.org/ | https://funsyteam.org/ ] ). The recruited graduate student will work in close collaboration with the group of Dr. Laura Harsan and the IMIS team at the University Hospital of Strasbourg, specialized in rodent and human neuroimaging. The project aims to develop new approaches for modeling large-scale brain activity by combining mechanistic connectome-based models with modern machine-learning methods. Mean-field brain models grounded in structural connectivity provide mechanistic interpretability and allow researchers to reverse-engineer the dynamical principles underlying brain activity, but they remain simplified and only partially faithful to empirical data. In contrast, artificial neural networks can achieve high predictive accuracy when modeling neural time series, yet they are often difficult to interpret mechanistically. The project will explore the concept of a “hybrid twin,” a modeling framework that couples mechanistic brain models with data-driven neural networks to jointly achieve interpretability and empirical fidelity. These methods will be applied to the analysis of rodent and human fMRI data across multiple pathological conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Down syndrome, and alcohol use disorder. We are seeking candidates with a background in computational neuroscience, computer science, physics, mathematics, or related fields, and a strong motivation to work on digital neurohealth applications. Hello! We would like to remind you that the deadline for registration to our Transatlantic Behavioural Neuroscience School is *this Sunday, March 15th!* The school is aimed at teaching young researchers everything they need to design and build their own behavioural setups, conduct complex experiments and analyze their data using open software and hardware. Our school is divided in five blocks: - *3D printing*, where you will have an opportunity to learn the theory necessary to take full advantage of this technique and how to use Autodesk Fusion software to design elements of your behavioural setup - *Electronics and Arduino*, that is intended to provide the skills necessary to understand the design of devices used in behavioural research; it will also teach how to build and program such devices - among others, optogenetics laser controllers, automated doors, stimulus delivery systems and devices used for synchronizing data streams - *Bonsai* module that aims at teaching you how to use Bonsai to track your animals, conduct closed-loop experiments with Arduino and analyze your data - *Deeplabcut* *and machine learning*, where you will gain an in-depth understanding of the DL tools used in behavioural science and learn how to apply them to extract interesting information from your data - *Project* is the module where you will apply all the knowledge gained during the course to build a 3D-printed setup for studying phototactic behaviour in Drosophila, conduct experiments and analyze the data School will be also composed of a series of lectures by researchers studying animal behaviour on different model systems and with different approaches.
