Postdoc positions in Neuro-AI at the University of Oregon
by James Murray
Postdoc positions are available at the University of Oregon’s NeuroAI Center (ion.uoregon.edu/neuroai<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://ion.uoregon.edu/neuroai__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54…>) in the Murray and Mazzucato labs. In our research, we seek to uncover the principles of how the brain performs computations related to sensory perception, decision making, and motor control. While previous experience in computational neuroscience and machine learning are desirable, applicants from other quantitative fields (e.g. math, physics, statistics, computer science) who are eager to learn about neuroscience are highly encouraged to apply as well.
Some of the scientific questions that motivate our work are
* How do different regions of the brain interact to learn new motor skills?
* What are the neural mechanisms underlying optimal performance in complex cognitive tasks?
* What are the principles that enable brains and artificial agents to learn efficiently from experience while minimizing forgetting?
* How can neural circuits generate the complex dynamics enabling naturalistic animal behavior?
Our labs aim at building mechanistic models of brain function grounded in a combination of theoretical approaches, neural network-based simulations, and statistical analysis of experimental data. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a large network of experimental collaborators at University of Oregon and at other institutions with expertise in sensory processing (visual, auditory, and olfactory), motor control, naturalistic behavior, neural engineering, and brain-computer interfaces.
The Oregon NeuroAI Center is part of the Institute of Neuroscience at the University of Oregon (ion.uoregon.edu<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://https.ion.uoregon.edu__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!jj…>), a major hub for systems and theoretical neuroscience research. The successful candidate will also join our International Network for Bio-Inspired Computing (in-bic.org<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.in-bic.org__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!jjW_DXqAj…>), a worldwide consortium of NeuroAI groups that provides trainees with an extended network for collaboration, including trainee exchanges, workshops, and schools. The University of Oregon is located in Eugene, Oregon, a vibrant college town in the Pacific Northwest with ample cultural offerings and phenomenal access to outdoor recreation.
We offer a competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience, and remote work arrangements may be considered. Our Institute strongly advocates for inclusivity in science, and we encourage applications from underrepresented groups.
Required Qualifications
Successful candidates will have a PhD in a quantitative field, including physics, neuroscience, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related fields. Applicants should have a strong quantitative background including at least some coding experience.
Application
The application can be found here: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/26101<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/26101__…>. Application reviews will start on December 1st and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries can be sent to James Murray (jmurray9 at uoregon dot edu) or Luca Mazzucato (lmazzuca at uoregon dot edu). Applications should include a CV, two-page statement of research interests, a one-page DEI statement (guidelines<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://provost.uoregon.edu/sites/provost1.uore…>), and contact information for three letters of reference.

Postdoctoral position in Computational Neuroscience to study role of sleep in memory and learning
by Bazhenov, Maksim
The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learns from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation, reconsolidation and forgetting during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions.
Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects. These projects include developing whole human brain model based on Human Connectome Project (HCP) data and mouse brain model based on the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. Other projects involve applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence, focusing on areas such as continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts.
An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python and PyTorch is a significant plus.
The University of California offers excellent benefits, and the salary will be based on research experience. Applicants should send a brief statement of research interests, a CV, and the names of three references to Maxim Bazhenov at mbazhenov(a)ucsd.edu<mailto:mbazhenov@ucsd.edu>

New doctoral program for Computational Neuroscience at Penn
by Maria Geffen
The Computational Neuroscience Initiative <https://cni.upenn.edu/> at the University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce a new program for Interdisciplinary Training in Computational Neuroscience (ITCN) <https://cni.upenn.edu/education> at the doctoral level. The goal of the ITCN is to train a new generation of scientists to make quantitative links between properties of the brain and properties of the mind. ITCN trainees will learn to use computational methodology to interpret experimental results; build predictive models of brain function that inform the design of the experiments; and support an ever-growing list of neuroscience-related applications, from brain-machine interfaces in the clinic to cutting-edge forms of artificial intelligence.
The ITCN brings together students and faculty <https://www.cni.upenn.edu/people> from Penn’s PhD programs in Neuroscience <https://www.med.upenn.edu/ngg/> (Biomedical Graduate Studies <https://www.med.upenn.edu/bgs/>, Perelman School of Medicine), Bioengineering <https://be.seas.upenn.edu/doctoral/> (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), Physics <https://www.physics.upenn.edu/graduate/> (School of Arts and Sciences), and Psychology <https://psychology.sas.upenn.edu/graduate> (School of Arts and Sciences). To join the ITCN, students first apply to one of those “home” PhD programs. Once admitted, students then typically apply to the ITCN before starting classes in their first year. Those selected meet with the ITCN Advisory Committee, both individually and as a group, to develop individualized training plans that meet the goals and requirements of the ITCN and each student’s home program. These plans include coursework, research, and other activities, that aim to build both expertise in computational neuroscience and a sense of community in the ITCN.

Postdoc on Dravet syndrome modeling: Inria (Montpellier, France) and BCAM (Bilbao, Spain)
by desroche
Dear all,
We have funds for a two-year postdoc on Dravet syndrome modeling.
This is part of an international collaboration between Inria (Bordeaux, Montpellier, Sophia Antipolis, France) and BCAM - the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (Bilbao, Spain), involving Fabien Campillo <https://www-sop.inria.fr/members/Fabien.Campillo/index.html>, Pierre Del Moral <https://people.bordeaux.inria.fr/pierre.delmoral/>, Mathieu Desroches <https://www-sop.inria.fr/members/Mathieu.Desroches/> and Serafim Rodrigues <https://www.bcamath.org/en/research/areas/m3a/mcen>. The postdoc will be based at Inria, in Montpellier.
The aim of the project is to develop a multiscale model of Dravet syndrome, from ionic channels of interacting neurons to large neural populations. We will use various modeling frameworks, adapted to the scale, from piecewise-deterministic Markov processes to mean-field formalism. The postdoc will perform a mathematical analysis of the models, extensive numerical simulations as well as data analysis using neural recordings from our experimental partners.
Regarding profiles that we are seeking, familiarity of the candidate with mathematical modeling in Neuroscience and Markov processes. Ability and willingness to do programming, as well as analyse experimental data, will also be a strong point to select candidates.
