*CALL FOR PAPERS:*
RaPID-2018 will be an interdisciplinary forum for researchers to share
information, findings, and experience on the creation and processing of
data acquired or produced by people with various forms of mental,
cognitive, neuropsychiatric, or neurodegenerative impairments, such as
aphasia, dementia, autism, Parkinsons or schizophrenia. Particularly, the
workshop focus on the creation, annotation, description, processing and
analysis of linguistic, paralinguistic and extra-linguistic resources
(e.g., spontaneous spoken language; audio-recorded samples and transcripts;
eye tracking measurements; wearable and in-situ sensor data etc.) from
individuals at various stages of these impairments and with varying degrees
of severity in order to identify, extract, process, correlate, evaluate and
disseminate various linguistic phenotypes and measurements and thus aid the
diagnosis, monitor the progression or predict individuals at risk.
A central aim is to facilitate the study of the relationships among various
levels of linguistic, paralinguistic and extra-linguistic observations
(e.g., acoustic measures; phonological, syntactic and semantic features;
eye tracking measurements; sensors, signs and multimodal signals).
Submission of papers are invited in all of the aforementioned areas,
particularly emphasizing multidisciplinary aspects of processing such data
and the interplay between clinical/nursing/medical sciences, language
technology, computational linguistics, natural language processing (NLP)
and computer science. The workshop will act as a stimulus for the
discussion of several ongoing research questions driving current and future
research by bringing together researchers from various research communities.
*TOPICS OF INTEREST:*
The topics of interest for the workshop session include but are not limited
to:
- Building, adapting and availability of linguistic resources, data sets
and tools
- Data collection methodologies
- Acquisition and combination of novel data samples
- Guidelines, annotation schemas, annotation tools
- Addressing the challenges of representation, including dealing with
data sparsity and dimensionality issues, feature combination from different
sources and modalities
- Domain adaptation of NLP tools
- Acoustic/phonologic/phonetic, syntactic, semantic and
pragmatic/discourse analysis of data; including modeling of perception
(e.g. eye-movement measures of reading) and production processes (e.g.
recording of the writing process by means of digital pens, keystroke
logging etc.); use of gestures accompanying speech and non-linguistic
behavior
- Modeling and deep / machine learning approaches for early diagnostics,
prediction, monitoring, classification etc. of various cognitive and
psychiatric impairments
- Information fusion
- Evaluation of the significance of features in diagnostics
- Evaluation of tools, systems, components, metrics, applications and
technologies including methodologies making use of NLP
- Evaluation, comparison and critical assessment of resources
- Digital platforms/technologies for cognitive assessment and brain
training
- Involvement of medical/clinical professionals and patients
- Ethical and legal questions in research with human data in the domain,
and how they can be handled
- Deployment
- Experiences, lessons learned and the future of NLP/AI in the area
*SUBMISSION DETAILS:*
Papers are invited in all of the areas outlined in the Topics of interest,
particularly emphasizing multidisciplinary aspects of processing such data
and the interplay between clinical/nursing/medical sciences, language
technology, computational linguistics, NLP, and computer science. We
welcome also papers discussing problems derived from the design of relevant
data samples and populations, but also the exploitation of results and
outcomes as well as legal and ethical questions on how to deal with such
data and make it available. The workshop solicits papers describing
original research. Papers may preferably describe substantial and completed
work, but may also focus on a contribution, a negative result, an
interesting application nugget, a software package, a small, focused
contribution *or* work in progress. The workshop will act as a stimulus for
the discussion of several ongoing research questions driving current and
future research and challenges by bringing together researchers from
various research communities.
RaPID-2018 will be a half-day LREC workshop to be held in the afternoon of
Tuesday the 8th of May 2018. The oral presentations will be allocated 10-20
minutes (please see the program for details), possibly, followed by a
common poster session (depending on the volume of received submissions).
Submitted papers must be formatted according to the camera-ready style for
LREC 2018 (style guidelines, templates etc. for the camera-ready papers are
provided on LREC's main conference page/Submission), and submitted
electronically in PDF format through the START conference manager page <
https://www.softconf.com/lrec2018/RAPID-2/>. Authorship does not have to be
anonymous and *papers should be 4-8 pages of content*. Additional,
unlimited pages containing the list of references and appendices are
allowed. We will strive to have all submissions reviewed by at least three,
or more, members of the program committee. Depending on the volume of
contributions, papers that describe systems or tools will be invited to
give a demo of their system during a poster session.

NIH/NSF funded postdoc (U Penn/U Houston/CU Boulder)

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join an NIH/NSF funded interdisciplinary project that includes Joshua Gold (University of Pennsylvania), Krešo Josić (University of Houston), and Zack Kilpatrick (University of Colorado, Boulder). Our aim is to understand how the brain accumulates evidence in dynamic environments. The project is guided by the overriding hypothesis that brain networks involved in decision-making computations incorporate learned expectations of the environment to implement adaptive decision-making. We seek a candidate who can work at the interface of experimental, computational, and theoretical neuroscience. As part of an interdisciplinary team, The candidate will develop models of neural circuits that approximate normative evidence accumulation in dynamic environments. The candidate will also help to validate these models, using behavioral data from humans and neural recordings from primates performing dynamic decision tasks.

Since 2013, the Bernstein Conference hosts pre-conference workshops which provide a stage to discuss topical research questions, novel scientific approaches and challenges in Computational Neuroscience and related fields.
Workshops addressing controversial issues, open problems, and comparisons of competing approaches are encouraged. The format should be designed to foster debate, rather than a mere series of talks.
The Bernstein Conference started out as the annual meeting of the Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience and has become the largest annual single-track Computational Neuroscience conference in Europe in recent years.

Scope and Topics
The special session aims at the presentation of the latest results in
the investigation of machine learning and cognitive robotics models
that are taking inspiration from our understanding of sensorimotor,
cognitive, and social development in humans and other animals.
The aim is twofold: On the one hand, the special session provides a
platform for presenting insights about the functions and processes
underlying developmental learning. On the other hand, it encourages
discussion of the role of developmental aspects in learning, in
particular in the light of the ongoing success of deep learning
methods.
Relevant research questions include:
– How can deep learning models be improved by including
developmental processes, such as intrinsic motivation,
sensorimotor exploration, or social learning and interaction?
– Is current deep learning methodology suited for autonomous
and open-ended learning in cognitive robots? Or will it be
necessary to consider developmental processes, and if so,
which ones?
– What are the mechanisms that allow a child or robot to
autonomously develop cognitive capabilities?
– How does the social and physical environment, with which the
child interacts, shape and scaffold the child’s developing
cognitive skills and knowledge? And how can machine learning
systems (including cognitive robots) exploit these
beneficial factors?
– What is the relative contribution of Nature and Nurture in
the development of human and machine intelligence?
– What do qualitative stages during development, and body and
brain maturational changes, tell us about the mechanisms and
principles supporting development?
The special session also encourages submissions of relevant research
on cognition and development from other disciplines, such as child
psychology, developmental linguistics, neuroscience, philosophy, and
interdisciplinary approaches to cognition and development.

Postdoctoral position at Brandeis in theoretical neuroscience

A postdoctoral position is available at Brandeis University to work on exciting problems in theoretical neuroscience (mathematical-neuroscience.net <http://mathematical-neuroscience.net/> <http://mathematical-neuroscience.net/ <http://mathematical-neuroscience.net/>>). The techniques we employ rely on dynamical systems (with delays, multiple timescales, nonlocal terms or jumps) and stochastic processes (statistical physics), and our research topics include the analysis of the dynamics of neuron model or neural networks with heterogeneous elements, learning, memory and pathological brain states, as well as the embryonic development of neural assemblies.
All projects will involve heavy collaboration with experimental groups in the Boston area, Paris and abroad. The positions are up to 3 year terms, contingent upon satisfactory progress, with competitive salary and benefits packages. The fellows will participate to the vibrant scholar life in the Boston area. Project description:
We study neural processing and plasticity of neural circuits at multiple levels, from the morphological changes at the synapse to functional changes of network activity in behaving animals. The position will be part of the project 'BrainMatrix' funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and seeks to explore the biophysical and physiological roles of perineuronal nets (PNNs) in neuron information processing and plasticity. PNNs are extracellular protein complexes thought to act as long-lasting synaptic anchors, thereby defining stable structural and functional connectivity in widespread but discrete regions of the brain. The entire BrainMatrix project is built on interdisciplinary principles and will involve strong interaction between mathematical modelling and experimental goals across the levels of investigation. As such, a key feature of this position will be to work between the outstanding computational and experimental groups at Simula Research Laboratory (www.simula.no)<http://www.simula.no%29/> andthe University of Oslo (www.mn.uio.no/ibv/english/research/sections/fyscell/cinpla)<http://www.mn.uio.no/ibv/english/research/sections/fyscell/cinpla)>. For this reason, the candidate should have experience in either computational neurophysiology/cell electrophysiology or experimental, and a strong desire and potential to expand their skillset to include the other discipline.
Job description:
We are searching to fill a 4-year full time postdoctoral, with 75% of the time devoted to research and 25% reserved for other career promoting activities such as lecturing or mentoring. The successful candidate will develop and implement models for interrogating the effects of genetic and pharmacologic manipulation of PNNs on single neuron and network function in visual and spatial information processing. The modeling approach will take advantage of tools and resources available through the Human Brain Project, and developed locally such as the NEST and LFPy simulators. The experimental goals will involve opportunities to apply or learn classical slice electrophysiology and single/multi-unit extracellular recordings, as well as advanced in vivo optical recordings and in vivo patch clamping. Within the framework of the position duties corresponding to one year of compulsory work may be assigned.

Why investigate neural dynamics?
A vital key to comprehending the brain is to understand how the complex changes in activity occurring at all levels of neural organization give rise to normal brain function. Furthermore, an understanding of normal brain activity will allow us to investigate abnormalities of neural dynamics that underlie many neurological and psychiatric disorders (e.g. epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia).
Understanding neural dynamics<https://www.findaphd.com/common/clickCount.aspx?theid=602&type=185&url=http…> requires interdisciplinary approaches that span many neuroscience areas, but crucially, also depends on the integration of experimental and clinical approaches with mathematical and computational expertise. This PhD programme trains a future generation of neuroscientists to successfully combine experimental and theoretical techniques in their research.
Structure of the programme
First year: students attend taught courses to gain an understanding of the biology of the nervous system and the ability to describe systems dynamics in mathematical models. Students carry out two extended research projects, each investigating dynamics in a different neural system. Each project is co-advised by one experimental or clinical neuroscientist and one mathematician or computer scientist. Subsequent years: Students develop one of the initial projects into a PhD project for the remaining 3 years.
Who are we looking for?
Applicants will have a 1st class/2.1 degree or a Masters in a biomedical science discipline or a relevant theoretical discipline (mathematics, computer science or physics). Crucially, we are looking for talented and motivated students willing to take up the many challenges in neural dynamics and who are open to learning about new disciplines and working across different fields.

POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a Scientist to be an essential team member in our ongoing effort to understand how the human brain processes information. The core responsibility for this position is to setup large-scale computational simulations and data analysis workflows from slice and in vivo brain physiology in humans. More specifically, the Scientist will (i) design and conduct simulations with an existing large-scale computational framework allowing simulation of a multitude of reconstructed, interconnected and biophysically realistic human neurons (e.g. [Schomburg, Anastassiou et al, J Neurosci, 2012; Reimann, Anastassiou et al, Neuron, 2013]; (ii) analyze simulated and experimental data to establish structure-function relationships (e.g. [Taxidis, Anastassiou et al, Neuron, 2015]); (iii) develop dimensionally reduced representations of neural function (e.g. using machine learning or statistical data modeling) based on recorded signals (encoding) and develop methods for reconstructing!
neural function from neural activity (decoding); (iv) compare computational findings with experimental observables.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In close collaboration with theoreticians and experimental colleagues, design, implement and conduct single-neuron and large-scale network simulations of human middle temporal gyrus.
Contribute to ongoing efforts in computational framework development (simulation and data analysis) as well as to scientific questions relevant to the system under investigation.
Contribute to adjacent projects related to human pathophysiology and neurotherapies.
Publish/present findings in peer-reviewed journals/scientific conferences.
Prepare written and oral reports on a regular basis.
Maintain clear and accurate communication with supervisor, team members and external collaborators.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
PhD degree in computational neuroscience, physics, applied mathematics, bioengineering or related field.
Strong background in scientific computing; experience in computational neuroscience is preferred, but other strong applicants will be considered (with background in computational physics, applied mathematics, biophysics, and related disciplines). Experience with parallel computing is a plus as well as familiarity with high-level programming languages such as Python.
Familiarity with in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological monitoring techniques and analysis.
