------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Permanent position in mathematical stochastic modeling of neuromodulation in brain networks and application to mental disorders ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The new research team NECTARINE at INRIA in Strasbourg / France aims to create a synergy between clinicians and mathematical researchers to develop new healthcare technologies. The team works on stochastic microscopic network models to describe macroscopic experimental data, such as behavior and/or encephalographic. They collaborate closely with clinicians and choose their research focus along the clinical applications. Major scientific objectives are stochastic multi-scale simulations and mean-field descriptions of neural activity on the macroscopic scale. Moreover, merging experimental data and numerical models by machine learning techniques is an additional objective. The team's clinical research focuses on neuromodulation of patients suffering from deficits in attention and temporal prediction. The team offers the possibility to apply for a permanent position as Chargé de Recherche (CR) or Directeur de Recherche (DR) in the research field of mathematical neuroscience with a strong focus on stochastic dynamics linking brain network modelling with experimental data. The new colleague should have a strong expertise in mathematical modeling with a focus on stochastic nonlinear dynamics and/or network dynamics, as well as strong interest in clinical applications. A new collaborative project with Kyushu U (#) has been launched to elucidate biochemical signaling involved in the development of the olfactory system. We are working on a project to simulate how neural circuits in the brain acquire function through development. As an example, we are focusing on the process of mitral cell dendritic pruning that leads to the acquisition of odor selectivity (Fujimoto 2023, Dev Cell 58, 1221–1236). This process is governed by the coupling of biochemical signaling of small G proteins and neuronal electrical activity. In addition, the neural circuit simulation will be performed to elucidate the emergent process of odor information processing. Dynamical motifs are recurring patterns of network activity that implement specific computations through dynamics, such as attractors, decision boundaries and rotations. Motifs are reused across tasks and reflect the modular subtask structure of commonly studied cognitive tasks. We believe this compositional structure to be a feature of most complex cognitive tasks. This work establishes dynamical motifs as a fundamental unit of compositional computation, intermediate between neuron and network. 2) Building on these insights, we are now investigating whether shared dynamical motifs can explain the effectiveness of curriculum learning in animal behavior. Also known as animal shaping, curriculum learning is a training approach where complex tasks are learned in stages through a series of subtasks. Postdoc in animal behaviour at Bristol University

We have a new BBSRC funded project that will develop automated methods to quantify reward learning in chickens and dogs as well as expanding studies in mice. The project will involve both behavioural studies and working with engineers to develop novel automated devices to test reward learning in animals with minimal human interactions. The ultimate goal will be to validate methods for the unbiased assessment of animal welfare. This is an exciting opportunity to study behaviour in non-laboratory conditions and across species, including in chickens, an endlessly fascinating social animal. We are looking for someone interested in animal behaviour and keen to work on novel devices; we welcome applicants with a computer science or engineering background who is excited to be involved in experiments, or someone with an experimental background eager to learn a bit of programming and some modelling. The project is at the interface between brain-inspired AI-Development and energy efficient neuro-morphic hardware development. Start date is as soon as possible (date may be negotiable) and will last for approximately 36 months. The post-doctoral researcher will join a team of researchers at UCSF and LBNL to develop on a new brain inspired AI technology for fast long sequence processing with applications to neuroscience, neuro-prosthetics and well as edge computing applications, including analysis of large data streams form X-ray microscopy and spectroscopy performed at LBNL. The AI technology will be co-developed to run on energy efficient neuro-morphic hardware based on CMOS and superconducting electronics with teams at LBNL and University of Southern California. Announcing Okinawa/OIST Computational Neuroscience Course 2025 (OCNC 2025)

The aim of the Okinawa/OIST Computational Neuroscience Course is to provide opportunities for young researchers with theoretical backgrounds to learn the latest advances in neuroscience, and for those with experimental backgrounds to have hands-on experience in computational modeling. We invite graduate students and postgraduate researchers to participate in the course, held from June 23th through July 10th, 2025 at an oceanfront seminar house of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University. Applications are through the course web page (https://www.oist.jp/conference/ocnc-2025) only; January 1 - January 31, 2025. Applicants will receive confirmation of acceptance end of March. Like in preceding years, the 2025 OCNC will be a comprehensive three-week course covering single neurons, networks, and behaviors with ample time for student projects. The first week will focus exclusively on methods with hands-on tutorials during the afternoons, while the second and third weeks will have lectures by international and local experts. The course has a strong hands-on component based on student proposed modeling or data analysis projects, which are further refined with the help of a dedicated tutor. Applicants are required to propose their project at the time of application. For the first time we charge a modest tuition fee of 60,000JPY. The sponsor will provide lodging and meals during the course. We hope that this course will be a good opportunity for theoretical and experimental neuroscientists to meet each other and to explore the attractive nature and culture of Okinawa, the southernmost island prefecture of Japan. The DFG-funded research consortium “FOR 2812 – Constructing scenarios of the past” is proud to announce a *call for abstracts* for its biennial conference “/Generative Episodic Memory: Interdisciplinary perspectives from neuroscience, psychology and philosophy/” *GEM 202**5.* It will be held *in person* at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany from 2^nd to 4^th June, 2025. Early concepts about episodic memory were based on the storage model, according to which experiential content is preserved in memory and later retrieved. However, overwhelming empirical evidence suggests that the content of episodic memory is – at least to a certain degree – constructed in the act of remembering. Even though very few contemporary researchers would oppose this view of episodic memory as a generative process, it has not become the standard paradigm of empirical memory research. This is particularly true for studies of the neural correlates of episodic memory. Further hindering progress are large conceptual differences regarding episodic memory across different fields, such as neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology.
