Dear all, The first task (simple decision) has been solved by a number of participants. Most of the models were able to survive in the proposed environment for quite a long time, and one entry used the optimal decision strategy, with only 22 neurons (out of 1000 available). The challenge is still running with a new task (cued decision, which might be simpler) and a new agenda (you have two months). You'll find instructions at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules for the new task. Reminder: you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. This was for good scientific reasons. First, there was a drive to isolate individual causes of behaviours and therefore to carefully control the environments in which children behaved during a study. Moreover, the equipment required to assess the neural correlates of behaviours were cumbersome and difficult to move so children's mobility had to be restricted. Recent developments in wearable and wifi-enhanced technologies have now allowed us to literally "untether" children and explore their brain and behaviour as they move around and interact naturally. This has opened new avenues for research, but has equally revealed important new challenges to the way that we approach developmental sciences. In this seminar, I will draw on my lab's recent work on children's sensory cue integration, neural synchrony during children's collaborative problem solving and the trials and tribulations of translating basic cognitive neuroscience research into real-world effective classroom interventions to highlight some of the challenges that contemporary developmental sciences faces. Short Bio: Professor Denis Mareschal is Director of the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, at Birkbeck University of London, and a founding member of the Centre for Educational Neuroscience. After completing a BA in Natural Science at Cambridge, he moved on to studying learning -- initially in the form of an MA in Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at McGill in Montreal, Canada and then through completing a DPhil in Psychology at Oxford. Professor Mareschal's research has focussed on identifying the mechanisms of learning and development in infancy and childhood through the combined use of behavioural studies, computational modelling and neuroimaging. He has received a number of awards for his work, including the Marr Prize from the Cognitive Science Society, the Young Investigator Award from the International Congress on Infant Studies and the Margaret Donaldson Prize from the BPS Developmental Section. Over the last 10 years he has led the UnLocke project (Unlocke.org) developing a neuroscience-based primary school maths and science education intervention. He is committed to taking neuroscience out of the lab and into the real-world, in terms of primary research and in terms of translational impact. Tenure-track assistant professor in computational neuroscience and/or cognition The Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications from outstanding early-career candidates in Computational Neuroscience and Cognition for a tenure-track assistant professorship. This position is part of a new cluster of faculty positions in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and the Brain and Cognitive Sciences supported by the Simons Foundation. We seek to hire scholars who develop computational theories and models to deepen our understanding of the brain in real-world, complex, or naturalistic contexts, or to understand collective decision-making and communication in groups of individuals. Researchers who develop and test computational models across levels of representations (from the brain to the mind) are particularly welcome to apply. The department’s research in this area utilizes large-scale, high-resolution electrophysiology and neuroimaging of both individuals and groups, state-of-the-art augmented and virtual reality, and a wide range of methods to study behavior from active information seeking in the fovea, to interactive, naturalistic communication and the transmission of complex information across individuals, as well as the joint learning and coordination of group behavior and collective decision-making. Successful candidates are expected to develop a highly competitive research program that establishes collaborations within the department, especially within our cluster of cutting-edge experimentalists studying neural systems and behavior in naturalistic settings. Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. *NITMB is seeking early-career researchers who have interest in transforming biological research and inspiring new mathematical discoveries. * This opportunity is open to researchers who want to develop mathematical, theoretical, and computational approaches to study any area of biology. NITMB Fellows conduct independent research programs, in collaboration with NITMB faculty members or others outside the Institute, focused on developing new mathematics and statistics relevant to challenges in biology. Dear All, Please forward this announcement to your best and motivated master students: We are offering a Master’s internship co-supervised by Delphine Oudiette (DreamTeam, Paris Brain Institute) and Damien Depannemaecker (Institute of Systems Neuroscience, Aix-Marseille University) on the modeling of state transitions, in sleep and attention, using tools from dynamical systems theory. The project aims to develop and characterize a dynamical model of these transitions, fit it to empirical data (EEG, behavioral, and subjective measures), and perform model inversion to estimate individual parameters. The candidate should have a strong quantitative background (applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or computational neuroscience), solid programming skills (Python, Matlab, or equivalent), and an interest in modeling and data analysis. Hello! We are happy to announce our first workshop of the new academic year! This time we will teach you how to use the *Bonsai* reactive programming language. Many experiments require us to synchronize multiple data streams— from cameras, sensors, microscopes—precisely deliver stimuli, and, quite often, do everything in a *closed-loop* setting. The fact that different devices use different software doesn’t make this task easier. One of the best—and open—solutions to these challenges is *Bonsai*, a reactive programming language that allows you to collect data from multiple systems, from calcium imaging through sound recordings to sensors, and to control output devices—such as feeders, motors, or stimulus delivery systems—to build *closed-loop* paradigms. It is easy to learn, implement, and is robust. During our workshop, we will introduce the basic logic of Bonsai; cover loading and saving data; working with a camera to track animals; and the basics of closed-loop experiments. We will also cover using Arduino alongside Bonsai to control experimental equipment and to save data from your sensors. *Requirements:* A Windows computer and a webcam. Introduction It is widely accepted that synaptic plasticity constitutes the cellular correlate of learning. Yet, synaptic plasticity alone is insufficient to fully account for learning. Other mechanisms, such as intrinsic plasticity of membrane excitability, have been shown to be necessary for memory formation. Still, it remains unclear how intrinsic plasticity contributes to memory encoding and alters cognitive processes. In this project, we will leverage the advanced voltage imaging in larval zebrafish to investigate how intrinsic plasticity reshapes neuronal behavior. 4. Your Job In this project, you will contribute to both engineering and neurobiology. First, you will help build a light-sheet microscope optimized for voltage imaging at the single-cell and subcellular level in live larval zebrafish (1). The development of this system will be supported by Dr. Emmanuel Marquez Legorreta↗, Dr. Ernest van der Wee↗, and the Biology Image Center↗ team. Once the microscope is established, you will use it to investigate the electrophysiological properties of cerebellar Purkinje cells with advanced voltage indicators such as Voltron2. The ultimate goal is to uncover how Purkinje cells alter their dendritic signaling and spiking characteristics under different sensory or chemogenetic conditioning paradigms, and to determine how these changes may be mediated through intrinsic plasticity or brain state. LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling—from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction—and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain–machine interfaces. The program combines *morning lectures* on theory, *afternoon tutorials* using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and *evening group project work*, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: *20 years of LASCON*. Ideally, the candidate should have a master degree in physics but other quantitative backgrounds will be considered. The researcher will be based in the Integrative Biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour, located in Konstanz, Germany. The group focuses on a diverse set of theoretical biophysics problems. The doctoral project is a collaboration between the integrative biophysics research group and the research group of Prof. Ilya Nemenman at Emory University, Altanta, US. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to have research stays at Emory University. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. The “Neuro → AI” theme will investigate how principles from cortical microcircuits, such as sparse coding, dendritic nonlinearities, and cell-type diversity, can inspire novel, efficient, and robust AI architectures like transformers and graph-based models. Conversely, the “AI → Neuro” theme will showcase how advanced machine-learning techniques are revolutionizing neuroscience, enabling new insights into neural dynamics through AI-driven analysis of large-scale imaging, electrophysiological, and behavioral data. By bridging the gap between biologically grounded inductive biases for AI and scalable computational tools for neuroscience, this workshop aims to catalyze research that unifies theory, experiment, and application. Topics: * Biologically inspired machine learning architectures * Neuro-inspired mechanisms for efficiency (e.g., sparsity, inhibitory-excitatory balance) * AI-driven analysis of large-scale neuroscience data * Unsupervised representation learning and causal inference for circuit discovery * Gradient descent-based training of bio-realistic neural models * Open-source software and reproducible research in NeuroAI * Neuromorphic engineering and hardware implementation Format of Workshop: This will be a one-day, in-person workshop. The format is designed to be highly interactive, featuring a series of invited talks from world-renowned experts, two panel discussions for in-depth Q&A, and spotlight presentations for high-impact contributed papers. A central poster session will provide a forum for detailed discussion and networking. The day will conclude with a roundtable discussion to identify key community challenges and a sponsored social gathering to foster continued collaboration. Applications are invited for postdoctoral Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRFs) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience (CCN) <www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-neuroscience/> within the Flatiron Institute at the Simons Foundation. The mission of CCN is to develop theories, models, and computational methods that deepen our knowledge of brain function. CCN takes a vertically-integrated “systems" neuroscience approach, building models that are motivated by fundamental principles, that are constrained by properties of neural circuits and responses, and that provide insights into perception, cognition and behavior. This cross-disciplinary approach not only leads to the design of new model-driven scientific experiments, but also encapsulates current functional descriptions of the brain that can spur the development of new engineered computational systems, especially in the realm of machine learning. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, FRFs are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. FRFs also have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. FRF positions are two-year appointments and are generally renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. Our research focuses on the mathematical principles of learning, perception and action in brains and machines. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). This unique opportunity allows fellows to ground their theories in rich empirical resources, potentially inspiring novel analyses, visualizations, and predictions that could subsequently be empirically tested. Dear colleagues, The Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks an innovative researcher for a tenure-track assistant professor position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. We seek a researcher whose work combines the following two elements. First, the research is empirical and addresses substantive questions in human cognition (e.g., perception, memory, decision making). Second, the lens of analysis is informed by computational modeling including cognitive modeling, computational neuroscience or data science. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research uses behavioral experiments and AI approaches. This can include: (1) using AI as a model of human cognition to advance cognitive theory; (2) using cognitive tools and theories to scientifically understand neural networks; and (3) empirical work on human-AI interaction. AI models can include deep neural networks of vision or language, reinforcement learning systems, or others. The Brain Networks Research and Development Group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, lead by Professor Thomas Knösche offers a PhD position for 3 years. The project is dedicated to elucidating the role of long-range brain connectivity in human language processing and will involve EEG and MRI experiments as well as realistic modeling of biological neural networks. It is a cooperation between the TU Berlin, the TU Chemnitz, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the MPI-CBS, funded by the DFG. Candidates should hold a master (or equivalent) degree and have a background in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or similar, as well as a keen interest in neuroscience. Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. Some experience in EEG or MEG experimenting and data analysis would be beneficial, though not strictly required. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are welcome. Dear colleagues, I am advertising a PhD position in computational neuroscience in my group (Neural Computation) - fully funded (3 years) - at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig. The position is part of an international collaborative effort (4 labs) to test and develop further computational models of episodic and spatial memory by combining human intracranial electrophysiology and computational models. Specifically, the project will explore computational/neural mechanisms underlying cognitive maps, spatial (and episodic) memory, and navigation. The candidate will have two main tasks: 1. develop new and improve existing models, 2. co-develop an analysis pipeline for human single units. Prerequisites are outstanding records in an area relevant to neuroscience. A strong quantitative background in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science or engineering is also suitable (e.g., physics, mathematics, etc.). Excellent programming skills (Python, Matlab) are required. This project is part of an international collaboration with the Universities of Bonn (Prof. Lukas Kunz), Berlin (Prof. Richard Kempter), and Columbia (Prof. Josh Jacobs).
