Sampath from UCLA Funding: 42 months by ANR, starting earliest in October 2019 Project description: We are looking for a PhD student for an interdisciplinary project between physics, mathematics computer science and neuroscience. Cone photoreceptors are the fundamental retinal neurons underlying our daylight vision. In spite of their importance for our visual perception, a comprehensive biophysical model showing how cones convert light into an electrical signal has not yet been developed. In close partnership with our experimental collaborators from UCLA, the student will analyze new (and worldwide unique) electrophysiological recordings to develop the first molecular model for the light response in cones. He will use asymptotic analysis and simulations to obtain a precise understanding of how cones respond and adapt during daylight. He will perform simulations with molecularly modified models to study how sensory transduction is altered in a diseased photoreceptor, which is important for understanding and treatment of photoreceptor dysfunctions. The first goal of the research is modelling how the robot could adapt its perception and behaviour to the individual needs of the partner during an interaction, with potential implications for communicative technology. The Neuronal Rhythms in Movement (nRIM; https://groups.oist.jp/nrim) unit at OIST is looking for an inspired applicant with a PhD in neuroscience, bioengineering, neuromechanics, biophysics or similar related field to lead a collaborative, generously-funded project exploring how abstract patterns of neuronal activity are translated into precisely-timed motor actions using rodents. Our main focus is on natural movements such as running on uneven surface, climbing and jumping that require continuous modulation of behavioral programs. The successful applicant will be combining our novel, high-resolution 3D motion capture system with deep-brain imaging (Inscopix nVoke system) and optical/pharmacological manipulation to disentangle the circuitry mechanisms underlying fine motor control. The work will be conducted in tight collaboration with in vitro physiologists and anatomists, and complemented with computational approaches from our collaborators. A postdoctoral research position is available in the lab of Dr. Ivan Soltesz in the Dept. of Neurosurgery, Stanford University School of Medicine, also affiliated with the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute at Stanford. The position is fully funded by NIMH through an NSF-NIH Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience research grant awarded to Stanford Instructor Dr. Aaron Milstein. The project is an international collaboration with Dr. Marlene Bartos at the University of Freiburg, Germany. The postdoctoral researcher will be co-mentored by Drs. Soltesz and Milstein. We are seeking a talented scientist to use modern computational modeling and data analysis methods to understand the roles of specific inhibitory and excitatory cell types found in hippocampal microcircuits in controlling spatial learning and memory. In particular, we are interested in nonlinear signal integration and associative synaptic plasticity mechanisms in the dendrites of granule cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus, and their regulation by a unique class of excitatory interneurons implicated in epilepsy, the dentate mossy cells.
