This has been intensively studied at the local level, where dynamics is described by pairwise correlations. Recent advances in simultaneous recordings of many neurons have allowed researchers to address the question at the global level, such as for the dimensionality of population dynamics. Our work contributes to this effort by analyzing the impact of connectivity statistics, including certain motifs, on the bulk and outlier covariance eigenvalues. By considering linearized dynamics around a steady state, we obtained analytically the covariance spectrum which exhibits a signature long tail robust to model variants and matches zebrafish calcium imaging data. This provides a local circuit mechanism for shaping the geometry of population dynamics and a quantitative benchmark for interpreting data. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. Grand Challenge on Neural Decoding at BioCAS 2024

Apologies for Cross posting ---------------------------------- Dear all We are pleased to announce the Grand Challenge on “Neural Decoding for Motor Control of non-Human Primates” at IEEE BioCAS 2024. About The need to restore their ability to perform activities for daily living has motivated the development of a host of assistive technologies. The most promising among the reported ones is the intra-cortical Brain-Machine Interface (iBMI). iBMIs aim to substantially improve patients' lives affected by spinal cord injury or debilitating neurodegenerative disorders such as tetraplegia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis etc. An important block in the signal processing chain is the intention decoder that converts the neural signal to a command for driving an actuator (e.g. wheelchair, cursor in screen etc.). While Kalman Filters have been the algorithm of choice historically, the recent improvements of deep neural networks (DNN) raise the question whether they can outperform traditional signal processing techniques. Moreover, integrating such decoders in the implant can provide an effective solution to data compression which is urgently needed to enable wireless iBMIs. However, the computational complexity of the decoder has to be reduced to fit within the power budget of an implant. Recent advances in DNN techniques such as model compression, quantization and new networks like spiking neural networks may offer solutions in this direction. This IEEE BioCAS Grand Challenge is geared in that direction and aims to push the boundary for neural decoder design toward next-generation BMI systems. We leverage the framework of Neurobench (https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.04640) developed for benchmarking neuromorphic systems to enable fair comparisons between different decoder designs. Post-doc in computational modeling of catatonia (Benoît Girard, ISIR, Sorbonne Université, Paris) A postdoc position (12+ month) is opened at the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics (ISIR, Sorbonne Université & CNRS). We are looking for a young and enthusiast researcher trained in computational neuroscience or neuro-robotics to contribute to the development of a computational model of catatonia. It is based on a new theory and preliminary results obtained in the lab (Aubin et al., 2022), dealing with the study of alteration of dynamic regimes observed in models of cortico-baso-thalamo- cortical loops. Results obtained with a population model have to be reproduced and extended with a spiking model, as well as connected to motor control module so as to investigate the motor symptoms of catatonia. The project builds on an ongoing collaboration between Benoît Girard (ISIR, computational neuroscience), David Cohen (ISIR and Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, clinical expertise) and Ghilès Mostafaoui (ETIS at Cergy-Pontoise Université, robotics and motor control). This collaborative event provides a unique opportunity to engage with leading experts and explore these states from both first-person and third-person perspectives. This unique 7-day interdisciplinary workshop, held from August 31st to September 8th in the beautiful setting of Campomoro, Corsica, brings together researchers from various fields to explore states of consciousness induced by psychedelics, meditation, hypnosis, and more. Participants will work closely with keynote speakers to create research proposals integrating insights from multiple perspectives. The scientific chair is the esteemed Thomas Metzinger, past president of the German Cognitive Science Society and the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness.
