Call for Abstracts: Bernstein Conference 2018 in Berlin ************************************************************** Satellite Workshops September 25-26, 2018 Main Conference September 26-28, 2018 PhD Symposium September 28-29, 2018 ************************************************************** The Bernstein Conference is the largest annual Computational Neuroscience conference in Europe with more than 500 international participants in recent years. The main conference, taking place from September 26-28, 2018, will be accompanied by satellite workshops taking place from September 25-26, 2018, and a PhD symposium which will be held from September 28-29, 2018. An important part of the main conference will be the two poster sessions. We are now inviting the submission of abstracts from all relevant areas. Authors of most accepted abstracts will get the chance for a poster presentation, a small number of abstracts will be selected for contributed talks during the main conference. Please note the earlier submission deadline for authors applying for a talk. All accepted abstracts will be published online and will be citable via Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). ***Apologies for cross posting*** *Postdoctoral Associate* *Job description: * The Decision Neuroscience & Cognitive Engineering Lab (PI: Dongil Chung; http://dnce.unist.ac.kr) and the Computational Clinical Science Lab (PI: Woo-Young Ahn; http://ccs-lab.github.io) are recruiting a postdoctoral associate in decision neuroscience with emphasis on functional neuroimaging and computational modeling. An ideal postdoctoral associate will be interested in studying human value-based and/or social decision-making using neuroimaging, computational modeling, Bayesian modeling, and/or machine learning. A successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on several projects. Specific research topics and training opportunities can be individually tailored. The labs will offer internationally competitive training and research opportunities. The postdoctoral position is for two years. Further extensions are possible, contingent on performance and availability of funds. Workplace can be either at Seoul National University (SNU) or Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), based on the applicant’s preference. The position is available immediately, but later start dates are possible, as late as January 2019. During this two-day event, dedicated to students and PhD students, we will work in teams on neuroscience-related projects.Brainhack integrates all levels of expertise and is also an opportunity to learn (new) methods, develop skills, share knowledge, collaborate with other participants and make new friendships in academia.During the “hack sessions”, participants will be working together in small groups on relevant projects. The hackathon will end on the last day, when participants will have the opportunity to present a brief overview of the progress they made (project update). The projects that have already been submitted evolve around reproducibility, and EEG/fMRI analysis.Participants will be supervised and could receive advice on methods from other participants and project leaders throughout the two days.We also planned a series of several science related talks. Among others subjects you could learn about meta-analysis, science communication, and information theory.A constant flow of coffee will be provided during the event. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE: kESI – kernel-based method of electrophysiological source imaging The Neuroinformatics Laboratory (http://neuroinflab.pl/) at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (http://www.nencki.gov.pl) invites applications for a postdoctoral position. The goal of the project is to develop, implement and investigate, a new technique of source localization of specific events in neural activity, such as a seizure, from multimodal imaging data, including ECoG (strip and grid electrodes), depth electrophysiological recordings, and MRI data from humans. The method will be validated with ground truth model data and tested on clinical data obtained from epilepsy patients. The fellow will build on already existing tools and techniques developed in the lab (https://github.com/Neuroinflab/kCSD-python) see especially Potworowski et al. 2012 and Ness et al. 2015 (https://neuroinflab.wordpress.com/publications/) The ideal candidate will have a strong computational background, experience in numerical solutions of PDEs, electrodynamics, computational neuroscience, or brain imaging. We can only accept candidates 0 to 7 years after reception of PhD (+1,5 year per child for mothers). Summary: Applications are invited for a fully-funded (fees + stipend) Ph.D. to begin in July 2018. The candidate will work with Dr. Jennifer Cook ( www.jencooklab.com; http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/psychology/people/profile.aspx?Referenc…) on a European Research Council (ERC)-funded project on the relationship between social cognition, bodily movement and function of the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system (ERC-StG-Brain2Bee). Project description: Studies of Parkinson’s Disease have typically focused on difficulties with bodily movement (e.g. difficulties with walking), and studies of Autism have tended to focus on social cognition. The co-occurrence of social and movement symptoms is thus critically underappreciated; Parkinson’s Disease patients exhibit social symptoms, and motor challenges (e.g. difficulties with handwriting) are common in Autism. At present, the biological basis of co-occurring social and motor symptoms is unclear. Notably, both Autism and Parkinson’s Disease have been associated with atypicalities in the function of the dopaminergic neurotransmitter system. This Ph.D. project aims to improve understanding of the complex relationship between social cognition, bodily movement and the dopamine system. This aim will be achieved using psychopharmacology studies and behavioural training in typical individuals and in those with Autism or Parkinson’s Disease. Results from this package of work will help us to move closer to a cross-disorder understanding of factors underlying variation in social and motor ability. The ideal experimental candidate has a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Neuroscience, Biology, Genetics) and familiarity with optogenetic and calcium-imaging methodologies in rodents, with demonstrated experience in data analysis and modeling (Matlab or Python preferred).
