Opportunities at the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, Stony Brook University

by Giancarlo La Camera

*On behalf of the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University* Interested in Computational Science? Get to Know IACS! Computational science is the use of models, simulations, and modern data analytics to solve complex problems and understand the world around us. It is an intrinsically multidisciplinary field of study. Computational science lies at the intersection of mathematics, informatics, natural and social sciences, and is a dynamic scientific method used to explain real-world processes and a method for solving increasingly complex problems. For instance, IACS researchers use computers to blow up stars, scan satellite imagery for the impacts of climate change, peer into the amazing world of quantum mechanics, and explore the mysteries of songbird communication. We use the world’s largest supercomputers and employ advanced Al. IACS students advance the intellectual foundations of computation and data, with high-impact applications in engineering; in the physical, environmental, life, and social sciences; and in the humanities. Postdoctoral position in sensory coding and memory - University of Sheffield

by Andrew Lin

How does the brain encode sensory information and form associative memories? Andrew Lin’s lab at the University of Sheffield is seeking a Research Associate to study these questions in the fruit fly Drosophila. We study memory using a range of methods, such as in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology, fly genetics, behavioural experiments, computational modelling and building custom equipment. You will design, develop and perform experiments and data analysis (tailoring the project to your own interests and expertise), write papers, and present your work at conferences and seminars. We seek self-motivated, innovative and creative candidates with a PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent experience), expertise in at least some of the above techniques, excellent communication skills, and an ability to work independently and in a team. We encourage applications from diverse academic backgrounds, such as biology, neuroscience, experimental psychology, computer science, physics and engineering. Of special note to the comp-neuro email list, we would be particularly keen to hire someone with expertise in computational neuroscience. We seek to tie computational models of what plasticity rules would be ‘optimal’ for memory, with experiments testing whether the real brain actually uses these ‘optimal’ rules. Closing date: 25 March 2024 Apply at this link: https://bit.ly/LinPostdoc2024 or https://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DGE774/research-associate More about the lab: https://www.aclinlab.org/ Start date is flexible - happy to discuss We welcome international applicants and the university will reimburse the post-holder for many visa expenses: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/jobs/induction/before/international/visas For informal enquiries, contact Andrew: andrew.lin(a)sheffield.ac.uk -- Andrew Lin School of Biosciences University of Sheffield Firth Court Western Bank Sheffield S10 2TN +44 (0) 114 222 3643 http://www.aclinlab.org
