PhD candidate EOI: Exploring how intrinsic biological rhythms influence brain activity

The project will utilize cutting-edge neuromodulatory and cognitive techniques combined with multi-modal neuroimaging assessments to investigate how long term intrinsic biological cycles influence patterns of the brain. Funding opportunity: Energy and Information Processing in Biological Organisms (FY25 MURI)

The US Department of Defense's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) funds grants for basic research on topics that change annually. These grants, which provide up to $1.5M/year for up to 5 years, are awarded to multidisciplinary teams from US institutions of higher education. Topic 3, Energy and Information Processing in Biological Organisms, aims to support investigations of relationships between energy consumption and information processing in biological organisms with a goal of identifying strategies that could have implications for human and computer performance in energy-constrained environments. Research concentration areas may include but are not limited to the following: 1) information processing strategies observed in biological organisms that trade reduced energy consumption or metabolic demands with graceful degradations in computation and information, 2) factors impacting the metabolic/energetic cost of an information bit, 3) predictions from biophysically-realistic models of information processing, 4) implications for human perceptual and cognitive performance under moderate to severe caloric restrictions, and 5) information theory-based computational strategies for artificial systems in energy-constrained conditions. Two Tenure-Track Assistant Professorships in Computer Science at Bocconi University

The new department of Computing Sciences, created two years ago and in a phase of rapid expansion, is an interdisciplinary department with leading international researchers in various fields including theoretical computer science, machine learning theory, statistical physics modeling, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, as well as biomedical applications. In terms of teaching, the department has recently opened a bachelor in AI, a master in AI, and is strongly involved in the PhD program in Statistics and Computer Science. It has a strong core in theory and applied CS, and aims at broadening its portfolio, in particular towards applications of machine learning not yet currently represented. We are looking for outstanding candidates, curious and open to collaborations with colleagues from other fields. Candidates with expertise in computer vision and/or high performance computing are particularly encouraged to apply. In principle the position is to be filled by 1 September 2024, but if necessary, the starting date could be delayed to February 1st, 2025. The school will provide an overview of theoretical and experimental frameworks used to study a variety of *decision making* processes. Dear Colleagues, CALL FOR PAPERS - SAB 2024 ------------------------------------------- The Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB) interdisciplinary conference brings together researchers in artificial intelligence, artificial life, computer science, cybernetics, ethology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, robotics, and many other fields, to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow natural animals and artificial agents to adapt and survive in complex, dynamic and uncertain environments. Animats denote the connection between animals and synthetic agents. The conference focuses on models and experiments designed to help characterize and compare various organizational principles and architectures underlying adaptive behavior in real animals and in animats.
