In this talk, I will present computational models in which hippocampal-like representations emerge in recurrent neural networks trained to predict sequences of sensory observations. While spatially tuned units reliably arise, they are not sufficient to form a cognitive map. Instead, map-like representations emerge when recurrent dynamics support multi-step prediction, yielding a population-level encoding of environmental geometry. Once learned, these representations can autonomously generate offline trajectories biased by recent experience, capturing key features of hippocampal replay. I will then show how these representations guide behavior in navigation tasks. In a hippocampal–striatal model facing visual ambiguity, access to hippocampal activity enables rapid learning and flexible adaptation. Place-like coding supports self-localization, while population-level hippocampal states can be used to derive intrinsic learning signals that estimate progress toward a remembered goal, improving performance beyond full sensory observability. Together, these results suggest that cognitive maps arise from predictive recurrent dynamics and support behavior through both localization and internally generated learning signals. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. MODVIS 2026 - Registration and Submission Deadline

MODVIS 2026: Computational and Mathematical Models in Vision, a satellite workshop to the 2026 Vision Sciences Society Annual Meeting, will be held during May 13-14 in St. Pete Beach, FL, immediately preceding the conference. Registration is now available through the VSS website:www.visionsciences.org/modvis/ <http://www.visionsciences.org/modvis/> There are three tiers of registration fees for trainees, academic members, and industry professionals: Early (Dec 19 - Feb 27): $80/$160/$200 Standard (Feb 28 - Apr 23): $100/$200/$250 Late (Apr 24 - May 14): $125/$250/$300 MODVIS is currently accepting submissions for oral presentations now through February 16th. Post-deadline submissions may be considered on a space-available basis. The program consists of contributed oral presentations, which are longer and more interactive than a regular VSS talk, and the schedule is designed to provide many opportunities for discussions during coffee breaks and a generous lunch break. Call for applications: Gatsby Bridging Programme (maths summer school)

The programme is designed for penultimate-/final-year undergraduates and Master’s students (incl. recent graduates) who wish to pursue a postgraduate research degree in theoretical neuroscience or foundational machine learning but whose degree course lacks a strong mathematical focus. Participants will attend interactive lectures and actively participate in problem-solving sessions and tutorials to develop a solid grounding in mathematics skills and intuition necessary to enter these fields. We aim to be inclusive and to increase the diversity of students entering both fields. We strongly encourage applications from students in underrepresented groups in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics. A small number of bursaries are available to students who may find it difficult to participate for financial reasons. 2 PhD positions available on Whole-Brain Neural Mass Modeling and Parameter Estimation

Dear subscribers, I'm happy to announce 2 PhD positions in our Computational Neurology lab located at the Institute for Neural Computation https://www.ini.rub.de/ and Bernstein Node Bochum at Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany. Our group works at the interface of clinical neuroscience (neurostimulation and neurodegenerative diseases) and computational neuroscience (whole-brain network neural mass modeling, parameter inference, control theory), with a strong focus on translational research that connects computational methods to real-world clinical data and patient-oriented questions. Our team is young, motivated, international, and genuinely interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise from medicine, neuroscience, psychology, and quantitative sciences. We invite applications for two PhD projects on network neural mass modeling and parameter inference in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease) and in healthy participants.
