invitation to join an open collaborative comp neuro research project

Hi everyone, We have started a new collaborative, open comp neuro research project (in the spirit of the Polymath project<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymath_Project> that was a huge success in mathematics). Everyone is invited to participate, and anyone who does contribute will get to be an author. Some details below, but you can just jump straight in to the website and take a look here: https://comob-project.github.io/snn-sound-localization/ The idea is to experiment with doing science in the spirit of collaboration rather than competition. We've set up an initial research topic and some code/results, and then you choose what direction you want to take, get feedback from others and give feedback to them on their ideas. We have an infrastructure that makes all contributions appear automatically on the website. We're running a discussion group, and planning local workshops. The first one of those will be in Paris on July 8th, just before FENS. This project grew out of my Cosyne tutorial<https://neural-reckoning.github.io/cosyne-tutorial-2022/> on using machine learning methods with spiking neural networks (surrogate gradient descent). It's a relatively easy topic to get into and a lot of low hanging fruit to pick, so hopefully ideal for this approach. If you watch the tutorial video and run the notebooks, you're already at the boundary of new research. Contributing is super easy. Go to our GitHub repo, open it up and start running the code on Google Colab (one click, no local installation required). Use one of the existing notebooks to start your own, commit the changes (via pull request for the first one), and your notebook automatically appears on the website. Dear all, The abstract submission deadline for “TEX2022: Bringing together Predictive Processes and Statistical Learning” has been extended to the 19th of June!! We welcome the submission of abstracts presenting work in the fields of Predictive Processes and Statistical Learning. Work at the interception of these two fields will be particularly appreciated. The results of the evaluation procedure will be announced on the 27th of June. All presentations will be done in person. Presenters of accepted abstracts will be required to register to the event no later than 10th of July. FENS satellite symposium "Understanding Neural Circuit Evolution" (Jul 7-8, 2022, in Paris and online)

Dear all, We are happy to announce our FENS satellite symposium "Understanding Neural Circuit Evolution" which will be taking place July 7-8, 2022, in Paris and online. Registration for attending in person or remotely is open until June 23, 2022. The FENS satellite symposium "Understanding Neural Circuit Evolution" will present exciting lines of research into neural circuit evolution from paleobiology to computational neuroscience and to the molecular and genetic generation of neuro-behavioral diversity. Organized by the German Research Foundation Priority Program "Evolutionary Optimization of Neuronal Processing"<https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/618311.html>, the symposium is designed to make the full spectrum of progress in neural circuit evolution accessible to a wide neuroscience audience. Thanks & kind regards, Thomas --- CNS*2022 Workshop on Bio-inspired active AI<http://users.sussex.ac.uk/~tn41/CNS2022_workshop/> Recent advances in AI and notably in deep learning, have proven incredibly successful in creating solutions to specific complex problems (e.g. beating the best human players at Go, and driving cars through cities). But as we learn more about these approaches, their limitations are becoming more apparent in terms of high energy consumption, fragility, and lack of transferability between tasks. These limitations are particularly apparent when contrasted with naturally evolved intelligence. While no animals can play Go or drive cars, they are incredibly good at doing what they have evolved to do. For instance, ants learn how to forage effectively despite their tiny brains and minimal exploration of their world. We argue this difference comes about because natural intelligence is a property of closed-loop brain-body-environment interactions. Evolved innate behaviours in concert with specialised sensors and neural circuits extract and encode task-relevant information with maximal efficiency, aided by mechanisms of selective attention that focus learning on task-relevant features.
