This *one-week* school will introduce the basic use of the simulation environment NEURON and related software to build brain models from experiments to their applications. - The school will provide basic notions on experimental methods to extract and process morphological and electrophysiological data targeting their use to build computational models of single neurons and neuronal networks. - The school will cover how these models can be constructed based on the principles of biological tissue electrophysiology. We welcome applications from full graduate, PhD students, and PostDocs in a variety of fields from biology, neurobiology and psychology, to physics, engineering, and mathematics, and industry professionals with a relevant background. Applicants are expected to have a good background in their discipline, an interest in neuroscience, and some knowledge (even basic) of computer programming. 2022 Western-Fields School in Networks and Neuroscience

Applications are invited for a one-week school at the interface of mathematics and neuroscience. With similar scope as the 2021 joint seminar series<http://www.fields.utoronto.ca/activities/21-22/western-fields>, the Western-Fields Summer School in Networks and Neuroscience<https://uwo.ca/academy/themes/neural_networks/2022_western_fields_school.ht…> will bring together advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs for a week of training in methods for networks, dynamics, learning, and modeling biological neural networks. Lectures will cover graph theory, network dynamics, advanced algebra, and machine learning. Students will receive intensive training ranging from an introduction to advanced methods in these fields. This summer school will be held September 19-23 on the campus of Western University (London, Ontario), with a closing session at the Fields Institute (Toronto, Ontario). 2022 Western Academy for Advanced Research Postdoctoral Competition

Successful candidates will join a new, research-intensive program at Western University. The Western Academy’s opening Theme will develop connections between mathematics and neuroscience, leveraging mathematical approaches to answer open questions in neuroscience. Fully-funded PhD project on networks in Mark Humphries’ lab, University of Nottingham (Oct 2022 start)

A fully-funded 3.5 year PhD project is available in the Mark Humphries’ lab at the University of Nottingham, UK. Broad classes of network models, like small-world networks and scale-free networks, have taught us much about the world. But we suspect a major class of networks has been missed. This project will introduce and explore a new class of model weighted networks, “divergent” networks, in which the structure described by the links and their weights do not match. Most theoretical work on weighted networks assumes that they do, so little is known about the properties of these divergent networks. We will close that gap by quantifying the existence and extent of divergence in a range of real-world networks, including brain connectomes at both single neuron and inter-area level; by creating generative models for these networks; and by exploring how divergence alters a network’s dynamics across a range of dynamical systems implemented on the nodes, including neural models. The student will be joining the Humphries lab (https://www.humphries-lab.org/) who draw on network theory and dynamical systems approaches to understand neural coding and computations. Research assistant position in systems neuroscience (sleep and memory). Florida, USA

Hi, We have an opening for a research assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Carmen Varela (Psychology Department, Florida Atlantic University; https://www.varelalab.org/) to investigate sleep oscillations that correlate with memory consolidation and sleep quality. Sleep disruption is a common symptom of neurodegenerative and mental disorders and is thought to be linked to their progression. Thalamocortical activity during sleep is critical for the contribution of sleep to memory consolidation, but it is not clear what oscillatory and cellular activity patterns relate to sleep quality and memory consolidation. The candidate will assist with administrative and scientific aspects of this project, using rats to investigate the patterns of thalamic activity that promote healthy sleep function and memory consolidation. More generally, the lab uses state-of-the-art techniques to investigate the neural network mechanisms of cognitive behavior, with a focus on learning and memory and on the role of the neuronal circuits formed by the thalamus. *Keywords*: behaving rodent extracellular electrophysiology, sleep oscillations, learning and memory.
