The Institute for Neural Computation is a central research institute at the

Research topics:
We are looking for an outstanding candidate who will be working on a system-level
model of spatial navigation with the hippocampus as one of its central areas. We use
methods from neural networks and machine learning. It is also planned to simulate
experiments done with rat and/or mice by our experimental partners.
The position is part of a joint team with Prof. Sen Cheng working on developing a
system-level model of hippocampal function for memory and navigation. This is being
done in close interaction with a team working on similar questions from the machine
learning perspective.
Teaching:
There is a teaching load of 3 hours per week during the semester, in particular for a
programming course in python.
Time:
The appointment will be for three years and can then be extended for one more year
if needed. The position is immediately available.
Requirements:
Candidates should have an education (equivalent to a MSc) in computer science,
physics, mathematics, electrical engineering or any related field. Required are
strong mathematical and programming skills (ideally in python) as well as the ability
to communicate and work well in a team.
Salary:
Salary is 75% of salary scale TV-L E13.

Registration and call for abstracts and symposium proposals for the 2nd
Conference of the Timing Research Forum <http://timingforum.org/> (TRF2) is
now open. TRF2 is the second international conference dedicated to
multidisciplinary research on timing and time perception and will be held
at UNAM in Queretaro, Mexico from October 15-17, 2019. TRF2 builds upon the
massive success of TRF1 held in Strasbourg, France in Oct. 2017 that was
attended by 250+ scientists with a shared passion for understanding timing
and time perception through varied experimental, computational and clinical
approaches.
The deadline to submit abstracts and symposium proposals is May 25, 2019.
During the submission process, please indicate if you wish to present an

2019 NEURON Summer Course

A few seats remain open for the 2019 NEURON Summer Course, but you'll
have to act quickly because the registration deadline is Friday, May 31,
and no applications will be accepted after that date.
This year's course will be held at the Minneapolis campus of the
University of Minnesota (UMN) from Monday, June 10, through Saturday,
June 15. It provides a thorough introduction to computational modeling
of neurons and networks with NEURON, and is suitable for individuals at
all levels of expertise.
UMN has made a limited number of private and semiprivate rooms in
graduate student housing available to course registrants at very

Data Scientist Position at Boston University

The Lab of Jerry Chen at Boston University is hiring a Data Scientist to be involved in several multi-year BRAIN Initiative related NIH and NSF funded projects. These projects focus on understanding cortical computation during behavior by combining large-scale population recordings, anatomical reconstructions, and transcriptional profiling as well as developing tools for large-scale and high-speed imaging of neuronal populations. This person will be involved in help to analyze experimental data, developing software tools to aid in the data analysis, and helping with data infrastructure and management.
Specific Projects include:
1. Analysis of dense electron microscope reconstructions of neuronal connectivity (ie. Connectomics)
2. Establishing pipeline for image analysis for in situ sequencing of gene expression
3. Establishing pipeline for automated behavioral training and analysis.
4. Visualization and analysis of population imaging data across multiple brain areas during behavior.
This person will be jointly involved and mentored by personnel from the Hariri Institute's Software & Application Innovation Lab (SAIL), a center with expertise in cutting-edge computational and data-driven research with tangible and direct impacts on academic research, public service, and industry partners in healthcare, finance, and technology.
Qualifications:
BA/BS degree (MA or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Neuroscience or related technical field.
One to three years of academic or professional experience.
Programming experience in MATLAB is required.
Additional experience in Python, C++, or LABView is preferred.
Extensive background in either computational neuroscience, image analysis, computer vision, or machine learning is preferred.

*The Course*
The course is interdisciplinary and covers modeling at different levels
of organization of the brain, from single neurons to microcircuits and
networks. We will focus on differences between healthy and diseased brains.
Participants will learn about compartmental and morphological modeling
of synapses, dendrites and neurons, as well as simulating local field
potentials (LFPs). The course combines lectures, tutorials and computer
exercises. This summer school is the seventh in the series of the
Baltic-Nordic Courses on Neuroinformatics (BNNI 2013 in Kaunas,
Lithuania; BNNI 2014 in Tampere, Finland; BNNI 2015 in Tartu, Estonia;
BNNI 2016 in Warsaw, Poland; BNNI 2017 in Kaunas, Lithuania; BNNI 2018
in Ventspils, Latvia).

The target audience of the course will be advanced master students,
doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in biomedical and
technology sciences, from medicine, biology, psychology, to mathematics,
informatics, information technology, physics, chemistry, who would like
to get an introduction to neuroinformatics and computational
neuroscience. Some experience with programming and quantitative
reasoning as well as strong interest in computational and mathematical
modeling of the brain will be desirable but not necessary to benefit
from the school. We will use the NEURON simulation environment for
biophysical realistic models of neurons and the Matlab software package
including the TREES toolbox. Desktop computers will be provided for the
exercise part.

Postdoc opportunity in computational/human vision at the University of Toronto

A Post-doctoral position in computational modeling of vision and knowledge
acquisition is available with Dirk Bernhardt-Walther (Psychology) and
Michael Grüninger (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) at the University
of Toronto. We seek a colleague who shares our interest in explaining how
structured knowledge about the world arises through visual perception. The
project combines formal logic in ontologies with perceptual grouping of
visual elements in complex, real-world scenes. Optionally, the project may
involve measuring brain activity using functional magnetic resonance
imaging. The ideal candidate has a strong computational and mathematical
background, experience with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques
and/or a strong background in computational neuroscience. The ability to
communicate with a diverse team of researchers from engineering and
psychology is an essential prerequisite.
Current state-of-the-art computational models of visual processing are
trained to extract visual features of increasing complexity in a hierarchy
of layers, choosing a label from a pretrained set of categories at the apex
of the hierarchy. Such systems lack an important aspect of the human visual
system – a notion of meaning of visual content. The project aims to develop
a new model of visual perception, which integrates the generation of
networks of meaning into all levels of the visual processing hierarchy,
thus allowing structured visual knowledge to arise naturally from visual
perception. Specifically, this will involve the generation of a large
database of images of real-world scenes with detailed ontological
annotations, development of data structures and algorithms for extracting
such ontological structures automatically from images, and testing the
viability of our new meaning-based model of vision for explaining aspects
of human vision.
The University of Toronto, typically ranked as one of the world’s top 20
research universities, is located in downtown Toronto. The city is one of
the most livable and cosmopolitan cities in the world, and has a vibrant
academic and information technology community. This full-time position
includes benefits and is fully funded for two years, with an initial
appointment of one year. There is also the possibility of extending the
position beyond the first two funded years by applying for outside

The institute
The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM) at the Jülich Research Center in Germany investigates the structure and function of the brain. The department INM-6 consists of 6 groups that conduct research in the field of computational and systems neuroscience. The Statistical Neuroscience group headed by Prof. Sonja Grün develops computational methods to analyze the joint activity of neuronal networks, and applies these methods to experimental data in the context of international collaborations using state-of-the-art approaches from neuroinformatics. The group is hiring a Doctoral Student (m/f) to strengthen its international and interdisciplinary team.
Your Job:
- Conceptualization, development and implementation of a tool and services to capture provenance of advanced workflows for the analysis of electrophysiological neuroscience data from complex, high-dimensional experimental recordings of brain activity.
- Implementation of version-controlled, provenance-tracked data/metadata processing and analysis workflows using state-of-the-art technologies along the FAIR principles.
- Co-development of data types and object models, metadata schemata, ontologies and software tools to describe results data and provenance information for typical analysis scenarios in neuroscience.
- Representing the technology at scientific conferences and courses, to the public, and within the EU Flagship Project “Human Brain Project”.
Your profile
- MSc. in natural sciences or computer science
- Good expertise in Python.
- Preferably knowledge in semantic web technologies relevant for data curation, ontologies and provenance (RDF, XML, JSON, SHACL, PROV,…), in version control and issue tracking systems, and in Linux;
- Experience with electrophysiological data and corresponding acquisition/storage technologies
- Excellent communication skills in English are mandatory: TOEFL or equivalent evidence of English-speaking skills
- Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to work independently
- A high level of scholarship as indicated, for example, by bachelor/master study transcripts and two reference letters

*Objectives*
·This workshop will include research talks (and introductory lectures)
on a range of topics related to the *neural processes of auditory,
visual and cross-modal perception*.
·The main focus of this year’s workshop will be on *adaptation, learning
and training in spatial perception and cognition*.
·The talks will illustrate the *multidisciplinary character of cognitive
neuroscience research*, covering behavioral, neuroimaging, and modeling
approaches, as well as applications of the research in auditory
prosthetic devices.
·The workshop targets *early-stage and advanced students and young
researchers*. It will provide ample opportunities for direct
interactions between the lecturers and the attendees.
The workshop will follow-up on our previous workshops organized in 2014,

*Format*
1/2-day sessions, including invited talks, contributed talks, and
posters, focusing on the topics of *Adaptation*,*Learning and training*,
*Auditory and cross-modal perception (general)*, as well *vision and
other topics in computational and cognitive neuroscience*.
Non-scientific program (outings to tourist destinations near Kosice)
will take place on the day before and day after the workshop.

Neural Modeling Postdoc Position At Emory University, Atlanta

A postdoctoral position is available for working in an NIH BRAIN initiative funded project on the role of the basal ganglia in motor decision making in behaving mice. The project aims to elucidate how subcortical structures feed back onto and influence cortical processing. The open position with a start date of Sept. 1, 2019 will involve biophysically detailed modeling of basal ganglia – thalamo-cortical interactions in the Jaeger lab at Emory University in Atlanta https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/jaegerlab/. An ongoing interaction with experimentalists is an important component of the project. Emory University presents a strong training environment in computational and systems neuroscience (e.g. http://livingtheory.emory.edu/ and http://biomed.emory.edu/PROGRAM_SITES/NS/research/computational-neuroscienc… ). The successful candidate needs previous computational modeling experience using the NEURON software and a strong background in the biophysics of neurons.
