We invite the computational neuroscience community to join us at our workshop on Neuro-inspired topology and machine learning at CNS 2023, on July 19th, 2023 in Leipzig, Germany. Workshop Description: Mathematics, machine learning, and computational neuroscience have long been intertwined. Mathematical tools such as graph theory, information theory and dynamical systems have been used to model neural activity. Similarly, modern machine learning approaches have been inspired by neuroscience and have been used to better understand brain connectivity and dynamics. These three research facets play off of each other to advance each field individually and concurrently. The goal of this workshop is to bring computational neuroscientists, mathematicians, and computer scientists together to communicate research around their expertise. Additionally, it will serve as a venue to discuss avenues of future research impacting computational neuroscience and mathematics while advancing machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. Dear all, Join us at CNS*2023 in Leipzig on July 18th and 19th for the workshop W06: Optimality, evolutionary trade-offs, Pareto theory and degeneracy in neuronal modelling<https://www.treestoolbox.org/CNS2023_pareto_workshop/program.html>. Nervous systems, like any evolved structure, encounter unavoidable trade-offs between multiple tasks. They must fulfil their fundamental computational functions whilst consuming as little energy as possible and remaining robust to potential environmental changes. These tasks are often in direct opposition to one another, and a general quantification of the relative importance of individual optimisation targets is non-trivial. The problem is complicated by the degeneracy seen across neurons and circuits, where multiple different combinations of components can lead to similar functional behaviours. Pareto optimality might provide a useful framework to analyse neurobiological systems from biophysically detailed cells to large-scale network structures that combine high-dimensional parameter spaces with high-dimensional objective spaces. Pareto, or multi-objective, optimality can, for example, help to identify geometrically simple subspaces of neuronal models that cannot be improved upon for all relevant objectives. This workshop aims to discuss applications of Pareto optimality to the trade-offs encountered by diverse nervous systems. The talks and discussions will also address the trade-off between functional effectiveness and energetic efficiency and the concept of metabolically efficient information processing. We offer two PhD positions in the following topics: 1. Search-based test case generation for vulnerability exposure in deep learning based systems and creation of a robustness assessment benchmark. Announcing the fourth Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight!

Dear Comp-Neuro mailing list members, We are pleased to announce the fourth edition of the Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight (CCNS) <https://www.crowdcast.io/c/ccnsv4> will take place this fall, October 5 and 6. The meeting will once again take place entirely virtually using the Crowdcast platform, and parlay the savings from this virtual setting into no registration fees for attendees. CCNS was created in the immediate aftermath of the initial COVID-19 lockdowns, which caused the cancellation of multiple conferences within the Canadian neuroscience community. As one of the first brand-new meetings created with the virtual space in mind <https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/article?id=10.1371/journal.pcbi.1008…>, CCNS distinguished itself by exploiting the online setting to engage an international audience, increase content accessibility through no registration fees and permanently available replays, and place an added spotlight on trainee contributions. Synopsis: Neuroscientists today face challenges in managing the growing volume and complexity of data generated through rapid technological and methodological advancements and sophisticated experimental paradigms. Data management tools and methods provide indispensable solutions for researchers to efficiently handle, organize, and analyze datasets, facilitating model validation, refinement, and simulation, while fostering collaborations. This tutorial presents examples combining multiple tools synergistically into a complete digitized workflow to help researchers manage and control data and analysis processes. - GIN is a platform for version-controlled (git and git-annex) data management and collaboration. Fully funded PhD fellowships are available to work at the CNRS (Cerco laboratory in Toulouse and also IPAL in Singapore) under the supervision of Benoit Cottereau (CNRS research director), in close collaboration with Robby Tan (assistant professor at NUS, Singapore). The aim of the project is to develop computational models of spatial cognition in humans (e.g., for depth/motion perception or navigation). In order to reproduce the very low energy consumption of visual information processing in biological systems, these models will be based on spiking-neural networks (SNNs) and will process data collected from event-based cameras. These models will be evaluated with respect to biological data (their responses will be compared to those observed in neural recordings and/or in behavioural experiments). The candidates should be willing to work in an international environment which involves Singapore and France, have a good level in English, very good programming skills and be interested in neurobiology. Some knowledge in neurosciences/ cognitive sciences would be a plus. The research will mainly take place in Toulouse, a student city (Toulouse is the second university hub in France) with high quality of life located in the south west of France (close to the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean Sea and the Spanish border). Applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship for a period of 3 years, at the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and System Engineering (DIBRIS), University of Genoa, Italy. The position will start on Nov 1st, 2023 on the following research project: **Early vision function in silico networks of LIF neurons** One approach to understanding implications of the initial stages of visual processing is ideal observer analysis, which evaluates the information available to support psychophysical discriminations at various stages of the early visual representation. Computational approaches primarily rely on simple generative models, which do not take into account the distinctive properties of individual elementary channels, as well as the active nature of the input sensory pattern. Accordingly, many details remain underrated, as well as their implications on functional vision not fully understood. The project's goal is to develop an “artificial observer” composed of an active event-based camera feeding a neuromorphic multi-layer network of leaky integrate and fire (LIF) neurons. The system should provide the inference engines for relating visual representations to performance on perceptual judgement tasks. Multiple and varying parameters captured under complex, real-life conditions should be comparatively assessed in silicon and human observers. The research will be conducted at the Bioengineering/PSPC labs of DIBRIS. Applicants are expected to: (1) have a Master’s degree in Bioengineering, Computer Science, Physics or related disciplines, (2) have a keen interest in Vision Science and in Artificial Intelligence, (3) have good programming skills in at least one language (MATLAB, C/C++, Python, C#), (4) work well in group problem solving situations, (5) have intermediate communication skills (oral and written in English). NEURON, NetPyne, and TREES at OCNS 2023 in Leipzig

Join us at CNS 2023 in Leipzig on July 15th for the tutorial T01: Building mechanistic multiscale models with NEURON, NetPyNE, and TREES. NEURON is a simulator for neurons and networks of neurons with strong support for morphologically detailed models. TREES is a toolbox for working with morphologies, and NetPyNE is an abstraction layer on top of NEURON to facilitate the specification of large network models. We will talk about both basic and new features. This tutorial will be highly interactive, focusing on cloud-based examples for the NEURON and NetPyNE portions. SPARC Data Structure Feedback from the community is an important part of our review process; it helps us ensure that the standard has community support and is useful and practical to the community. By commenting, you contribute to improving the standard for current and future users! 1. Digital SWC Reconstructions Describing Neuron Morphology (SWC) SWC files (file extension of .swc) are text-based (ASCII text) files that describe three-dimensional neuronal or glial morphology. These digital reconstructions represent morphology as a vectorized tree structure, made of a series of connected nodes. An SWC file contains a series of text-based rows where each neuron node is described by a single row of only seven space-separated values. The format is simple and intuitive; a parser of or writer to the format could be implemented by anyone with knowledge of any programming language. With an open archive and freely available structure editor, the SWC system facilitates community-wide pooling of data for building biophysically realistic neuronal models and studying the morphological variation between neurons, contributing to a greater neuroscientific cooperation and openness. SPARC Data Structure Financially backed by the NIH Common Fund, SPARC is a large-scale project which aims to deepen our knowledge of nerve-organ interactions. With an initial focus on bioelectronic medicine, the SPARC consortium created the SPARC data structure (SDS), a file and metadata organizational scheme inspired by the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS). This data structure has proven capable of handling complex datasets from multiple and heterogeneous species, measurement techniques, and spatial scales. One of the primary purposes of SDS is to increase the integrity of scientific research by promoting FAIR and open science practices, particularly by facilitating the generation of well-annotated, organized, standardized, and shared biomedical datasets. In OST HMDs the direct view of the world is mostly preserved and there is no perspective conversion in viewpoint and field of view, as with video see-through (VST) systems. This aspect confers a clear advantage over VST solutions, particularly when used to interact with close objects. Although there have been significant improvements to performance and comfort of OST HMDs, limitations associated with human perception still remain to be addressed. In order to provide the user with a realistic, natural and comfortable visual experience, a thorough and accurate knowledge of eye characteristics and HMD geometry must be assumed. These quantities are usually calibrated on a per-device and per-user basis, or modeled from scientific literature. A deviation of the actual values from the expected ones can result in incorrect camera placement, spatial distortions and non-uniformities, thus triggering discomfort in VR/AR. The goal of this research project is to develop methods and techniques to assess and mitigate discomfort and perceptual inconsistencies between real and augmented visual content in OST HMDs. A joint experimental and modeling approach will be followed in order to: 1. investigate methods to evaluate different sources of discomfort/mismatch; 2. develop subjective and objective methods to quantify the originated discomfort; 3. investigate strategies to mitigate the sources of discomfort/mismatch in AR/VR devices. *Requirements:* Applicants are expected to: 1) have a keen interest in Vision Science and in Augmented Reality, 2) have good programming skills in at least one language (Matlab, C/C++, Python, C#), 3) work well in group problem solving situations, 4) have intermediate communication skills (oral and written) in English or better. The selected candidates will be working on questions addressing how brain computations emerge from the dynamics of the underlying neural circuits and how the neural code is shaped by computational needs and biological constraints of the brain. To tackle these questions, we employ a multidisciplinary approach that combines state-of-the-art modeling techniques and theoretical frameworks, which include but are not limited to data-driven circuit models, biologically realistic deep learning models, abstract neural network models, machine learning methods, and analysis of the neural code. Our research team, the Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience Laboratory, is on the main UCLA campus and enjoys close collaborations with the world-class neuroscience community there. Our NIH-funded project investigates the brain's dynamic circuit motifs underlying internal vs. external-oriented processes in the auditory and interconnected areas, using circuit modeling of the thalamocortical system. PhD position (deadline June 19th): Learning and Control with Spiking Neural Networks at the Donders Centre for Cognition

Are you interested in how our brain is able to so precisely control the body, and adapt to new situations? Would you like to dive deep into current theories for how this works, and develop new ones? Are you either highly interested in modelling the brain, and/or in applying the resulting theories to practical problems? Then this is a PhD position you should apply for. To successfully control the body our brain needs to generate stable states (i.e. keep a hand somewhere), but also full dynamic behaviours (i.e. a full arm swing). The brain does this highly efficiently through networks of spiking neurons - the efficiency and success of which is yet to be reproduced in AI. Crucially, neural activity during dynamic tasks is often observed to lie on lower-dimensional manifolds. Why this is useful, and how networks generate and adapt such activity manifolds, is the subject of many theoretical models but still very much an open question. In this NWO-funded 4-year PhD project, using tools from both AI and neuroscience, you will develop neural networks which produce such low-dimensional manifolds and then use these to learn efficient and effective control. This project is expected to yield more capable AI systems and further our understanding of brain computations. Dependent on your background and interests, the project can either go deep into applying the resulting models to AI control problems, or reproduce and predict neuroscience experiments. You will be supervised by Dr. Sander Keemink and Prof. Marcel van Gerven, and advised by Dr. Nasir Ahmad. The project is hosted at the AI department of the Donders institute, where there are additional opportunities to collaborate with experts in neuroscience, robotics, AI, and other related disciplines. Profile: * You have obtained a Master's degree in Computational Neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Physics, Computer Science, Computer/Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. * You have a strong understanding of dynamical systems theory, and computational neuroscience and/or AI (knowledge of spiking neural networks is a big plus). * Desirable but not essential: experience with neuroscience data, control systems, and/or neural differential equations. * You have an excellent background in mathematics and Python programming skills, and you are familiar with advanced machine learning libraries. * You have a passion for research. Autumn School at Ulster University

The Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) from Ulster University, Derry~Londonderry campus is delighted to announce that the international Computational Neuroscience, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (ISRC-CN3) Autumn School will be held again for the third time this year. The school will be organised in a hybrid mode, providing facilities for both in-person and online attendees. Supported by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, IEEE Brain and other sponsors, this year's Autumn School will run from the 25th October to 31st October, inclusively. The topics covered in the seven-day ISRC-CN3 Autumn School include: * mathematical foundations in neuroscience * computational modelling of neural-glial systems, neuromodulators and cognition * neural data science * neurotechnology * neuromorphic computing and self-repaired intelligent machines * spiking neural networks and applications * cognitive robotics * ethics in neurotechnology and AI * entrepreneurship in neurotechnology and AI This ISRC-CN3 Autumn School is unique not only in the range and types of topics covered but it will also be delivered in an integrated way, from pedagogical to advanced levels. The school is primarily targeted at PhD student level but we also welcome applications from MSc students, postdoctoral researchers, academic faculty, and industrial researchers. Registration is made highly affordable, and bursaries may be available.
