DATA ANALYSIS AND SIGNAL PROCESSING COMPETITION Data Analysis and Signal Processing Competition is being organized in conjunction with the workshop. The goal of the competition is to advance the current state-of-the-art in theoretical and practical aspects of signal processing domains. The problems are selected to reflect current trends, evaluate existing approaches on common benchmarks, and identify critical new areas of research. Winners will be announced and awards given at the workshop. BEST STUDENT AWARD The MLSP Best Student Paper Award will be granted to the best overall paper for which a student is the principal author and presenter. This author must be a registered student at the time of paper submission to be eligible for this award. The award will be presented during the conference and consists of a honorarium (to be divided equally between all student authors of the paper), and a certificate for each such author. The award will be selected by a subcommittee of the program committee. The selection is based on the quality, originality, and clarity of the submission. The Human Brain and Behavior Laboratory (HBBL), Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Experimental and Computational Social Neuroscience. The research program aims to advance our understanding of basic forms of real-time social behavior. This new NIMH-supported program employs a three-pronged approach that combines (1) experimental studies aimed at elucidating how neuromarkers are organized dynamically during the course of social interaction (2) the design and analysis of the Human Dynamic Clamp (reciprocal coupling between humans and mathematical models of a social partner) and (3) multiscale neurocomputational modeling of both structure and function. The postdoctoral scientist will be highly motivated and able to work independently. He/she will also collaborate within an interdisciplinary team of researchers whose expertise spans Neuroscience, Psychology and Physics. It is an association of highly motivated scientists, engineers, coders, and curious citizens from around the world who believe in open science and open access. While our ultimate goal is to simulate every cell in the c. elegans, we are starting out by building a model of its body and environment, its nervous system, and its muscle cells. Postdoc/engineer positions in Parkinsons/DBS and Neuroprosthetics

We currently have multiple openings for Postdocs and/or engineers for two newly funded studies. Detailed descriptions of each study are listed below. If interested, please send a CV to Dr. Dawn Taylor at dxt42(a)case.edu. 1) The goal of the *Parkinson's* project is to understand how Parkinson's disease alters cortical network processing and how *Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)* can be improved to better re-normalize motor processing. Cortical network activity will be recorded in monkeys via intracortical electrode arrays before and after making the animals hemi-Parkinsonian via injections of the selective neurotoxin MPTP (note this toxin is initially applied in such a way that the animal only develops parkinsonian symptoms on one half of its body so the animal can still groom, ambulate, and take care of itself). DBS will then be applied to two subcortical regions (subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus) to alleviate Parkinsonian symptoms. Computational models of the cortical microcircuit will be developed that accurately reflect the recorded cortical activity in the normal and Parkinsonian states as well as under the influence of different DBS patterns. The model parameters that need to be changed to make the network computational model behave like the recorded experimental data under the different conditions will be informative regarding the underlying mechanisms of DBS. The refined computational model will also be used to rapidly screen for new DBS patterns that are more effective at restoring normal cortical network processing. The improved DBS patterns suggested by the computational model will then be validated by testing those novel patterns in the monkeys. This project is being done in conjunction with Dr. Cameron McIntyre who will oversee the computational modelling part of the study. We are looking for multiple post docs that can focus on either the animal work, the computational modeling, or both depending on their skills and interests. 2) The long-term goal of the *Neuroprosthetics* project is to enable paralyzed individuals to use their brain signals to control their upper limb via implanted muscle stimulators. Most labs working on brain-controlled neuroprosthetics decode intended limb kinematics (e.g. velocity, joint angles, etc.) from the recorded brain signals. However, that approach still requires converting those kinematic commands into the appropriate stimulation patterns required to generate the desired limb motion. That conversion process has not been resolved for the upper limb due to the limb's complex dynamical nature and the fact that the limb is subject to unknown external forces during use. We bypass this obstacle by retraining the brain to control muscle stimulators directly. We have come up with some novel, but clinically feasible ways of mapping neural signals directly to muscle stimulators. Our methods can enable the user to have good control over both limb motion and stiffness. To demonstrate and refine our methods, we are training monkeys to control the movements of a realistic musculoskeletal model of a paralyzed limb activated via implanted muscle stimulators. The paralyzed limb simulator (developed by the lab of Robert Krisch) provides real-time visual feedback to the animal of the limb motion that would result from stimulating the paralyzed muscles based on the animal's neural signals decoded in real time. The use of this real-time paralyzed arm simulator allows us to test and refine our process of brain-controlled muscle stimulation in monkeys without actually having to paralyze any animals. -- Dawn M. Fully funded combined theoretical and experimental neuroscience PhD at UCL

The student will receive training from two labs: Professor Peter Latham (Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit; theory) and Professor Michael Hausser (Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research; experiment). The candidate will initially be based at the Gatsby Unit with Professor Latham, taking courses in computational neuroscience and developing theories at the circuit level; the rest of the PhD will be with Professor Hausser testing those theories using advanced experimental tools for linking neural circuit function with behavior (most notably targeted optogenetics and fast 2-photon imaging). Trust and incentive have bidirectional relationships. As trustworthiness measures are used as part of incentive mechanisms to promote honesty in electronic communities, incentive mechanisms motivate participants to contribute their truthful opinions that are useful for trust modeling. Hence, trust and reputation systems should not only provide a means to detect and prevent malicious activities but also design a mechanism to discourage dishonesty attitudes amongst participants. The evidential success of combining these two concepts inspires and encourages researchers in the trust community to enhance the efficacy and performance of trust modeling approaches by adopting various incentive mechanisms. CFP: Workshop on ***"Computational Modeling of Cognition-Emotion Interactions: Relevance to Mechanisms of Affective Disorders and Psychotherapeutic Action"*** To be held at the 36^th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society July 23, 2014 Quebec City, Quebec, Canada Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in developing computational models of emotion and emotion-cognition interaction, within the emerging area of computational affective science.At the same time, emotion theorists and clinical psychologists have been recognizing the importance of moving beyond descriptive characterizations of affective disorders, and identifying the underlying mechanisms that mediate both psychopathology and psychotherapeutic action. Computational models of cognition-emotion interactions have the potential to facilitate more accurate assessment and diagnosis of affective disorders, and to provide a basis for more efficient and targeted approaches to treatment, through an improved understanding of the mechanisms of therapeutic action. In spite of the significant synergy that could result from a dialogue among researchers and practitioners in affective modeling, emotion research and clinical psychology, limited interaction exists among these communities. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary dialog among the members of these research communities, and explore how computational models of emotion-cognition interaction can help elucidate the mechanisms mediating affective disorders, as well as the mechanisms of therapeutic action. Workshop Format To facilitate cross-disciplinary discussions and interaction, the workshop format will emphasize moderated panels, small working groups, and open discussion, in addition to the traditional paper sessions. To this end, we encourage submissions of proposals for discussion topics, panels and small working groups. 2nd call for papers: NCPW14 - 14th Neural Computation and Psychology Workshop, Lancaster UK * Apologies for cross-posting * Dear colleague, We cordially invite you to participate in NCPW14, the 14th Neural Computation and Psychology Workshop, to be held at Lancaster University, UK, from August 21-23, 2014: http://www.psych.lancs.ac.uk/ncpw14 This well-established and lively workshop aims at bringing together researchers from different disciplines such as artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, neurobiology, philosophy and psychology to discuss their work on models of cognitive processes. Often this workshop has had a theme, and this time it is ‘Development across the lifespan’, but also submissions that do not fall under this theme are welcome. Papers must be about emergent models - frequently, but not necessarily - of the connectionist/neural network kind, applied to cognition. The NCPW workshops have always been characterized by their limited size, high quality papers, the absence of parallel talk sessions, and a schedule that is explicitly designed to encourage interaction among the researchers present in an informal setting. NCPW14 is no exception. The scientific program will consist of keynote lectures, oral sessions and poster sessions. The call is open for researchers of any nationality who have contributed to a peer reviewed publication (as coauthor) or peer reviewed conference abstract (as first author) that was submitted before starting their doctoral studies, is written in English and was accepted or published in 2013 or 2014. The award comprises 500 € prize money, plus a travel grant of up to 2.000 € to cover a trip to Germany, including participation in the Bernstein Conference 2014 in Göttingen (www.bernstein-conference.de) and an individually planned visit to up to two German research institutions in Computational Neuroscience. In this conference, Matthieu Ricard will present the benefits of meditation - mind training - for overcoming the power that obsessive thoughts and negative emotions have over our minds, a power which undermines our well being and ultimately is the deep cause of suffering. He will describe work carried out by neuroscientists at prestigious research centers in the USA, such as Madison, Princeton, and Berkeley, and in Europe, such as the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, among others, and results showing that mind training can bring deep changes to our personalities. EEG assessment of central auditory disorder in patients with brain injury The Group for Biophysics of Hearing and Sensory Neuroscience (http://www.bg.ic.ac.uk/research/reichenbach/) at the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London, is looking for a highly motivated PhD student. The PhD project is embedded in the new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Neurotechnology for Life and Health at Imperial College London (http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/neurotechnology/cdt) Our auditory environment is highly complex: different speakers often talk at the same time, music plays in the background, cars drive by. Our central nervous system is highly effective in analyzing such an auditory scene; for example, we can easily understand a speaker despite background noise. A range of neurological disorders can, however, impair the cognitive processes necessary to parse an acoustic scene and hence significantly impair a person's life. Both the brain's auditory processing as well as the associated disorder remain poorly understood. The graduate project will develop methods to assess the brain’s processing of complex auditory signals such as speech and music through noninvasive electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The methods will be used to diagnose patients with brain injury whose auditory processing is impaired. As an example, the project will study patients with aphasic stroke that affects brain regions for communication and language. The research will help to better understand the neurological basis of such disorder and help to develop novel rehabilitation strategies. The project will involve EEG data acquisition, advanced data analysis, machine learning, computational modeling and collaboration with clinical researchers. Candidates should have a degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science, solid quantitative and computational abilities, and a strong interest in working on biomedical problems. Eligible candidates must be EU nationals.
