A number of studies using resting state fMRI have shown that machine learning algorithms can distinguish between healthy controls and individuals diagnosed with either autism spectrum disorder or schizophrenia. However, it has not yet been determined whether machine learning algorithms can be used to distinguish between the two disorders. Using a linear support vector machine, we identify features that are most diagnostic for each disorder and successfully use them to classify an independent cohort of subjects. We find both common and divergent connectivity differences largely in the default mode network as well as in salience, and motor networks. Using divergent connectivity differences, we are able to distinguish autistic subjects from those with schizophrenia. The Papageorgiou/Investigational Targeted Brain Neurotherapeutics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to manage innovative research with a focus on neuromodulation and neurorehabilitative approaches using imaging-based neurofeedback. Our Laboratory focuses on the following areas: (i) to elucidate the mechanisms that guide plasticity following insult to the brain, by using structural, and functional measures; (ii) induce functional plasticity/reorganization of the brain by applying neurofeedback methods, such as real-time fMRI and EEG; (iii) develop optimization neurofeedback approaches via computational modelling; (iv) develop MR-compatible instruments that will assist in examining plasticity for our longitudinal studies. Our goal is to elucidate the mechanisms involved in cortical blindness, motor impairment, and chronic pain using highly quantitative methods, such as population receptive field, multivariate and univariate analyses. Equally important, our studies focus on a variety of innovative approaches, including neurofeedback in targeted and individualized regions of interest based on the patient's location and spatial extent of the lesion, optimization of rt-fMRI nFb methods with the long-term goal of central and peripheral nervous system injury neuro-rehabilitation. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Neuroscience, or Psychology or a related field. Masters degree in Neuroscience, or Psychology with 5 years of experience performing human study experiments will substitute for a PhD degree. The Research Associate is expected: • Manage clinical and basic science - fMRI and EEG studies. • Screen and schedule research volunteers. • Perform psychophysics, and behavioral assessments. • Complete study source documents and maintain study files. • Enter all data from research forms. • Perform statistical analysis and image processing. • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations and assist with IRB submissions. •Train undergraduate, and graduate students to run lab studies • Opportunities to contribute and write up scientific publications, including statistical analyses and graphical representation of data and writing. This position requires interfacing with patients: (i) during the recruitment phase; (ii) the experimental, MR scanning phase; and (iii) following up with patients as our studies are longitudinal. The candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills by focusing on solving conflict, maintain confidentiality, listen to others without interrupting, keep emotions under control, remain open to others' ideas in the team. *Benefits of noise in the transmission and processing of time-dependent stimuli by populations of sensory neurons** * We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on signal processing in recurrent neural networks, especially information filtering of sensory signals and the functional role of intrinsic fluctuations and cell heterogeneity. These aspects of neural information processing will be explored by means of analytical calculations, numerical simulations of network models, and the comparison to experimental data (collaboration with Jan Benda, University Tubingen, Germany). In order to get an idea about similar approaches pursued in the past, have a look at our recent paper in PNAS [Grewe, Kruscha, Lindner, and Benda PNAS 114 E1977 (2017)]. Journal of Behavioural Robotics DESCRIPTION Deep Learning can equip robots with a new level of skill by utilizing insights from neuroscience. These new developments have impact on various types of robots, from companion robots to driver assistance in semi-autonomous vehicles. Deep Learning can enable unprecedented quality of results in tasks such as object detection, localization, communication and behavior learning. Training deep neural networks typically requires GPU workstations or high-performance computing servers. It may require huge amounts of data or innovative training schemes. These issues indicate only some of the special challenges when utilizing deep networks in robotics. Dear all, The Dutch research consortium 'Language in Interaction' is currently recruiting for a 3.5-year postdoctoral researcher position in the field of machine learning. The goal of this project “New Advances in Neural Networks for Coding of Neural Representations” is to advance the state of the art in both encoding and decoding of linguistic and semantic representations using advanced neural network architectures. Your responsibility will be to develop a general computational framework for encoding and decoding neural representations. The framework will make extensive use of state-of-the-art neural networks and other machine-learning techniques, which you will develop throughout this project. The models to be developed will be based on novel and efficient deep, generative and/or recurrent neural network architectures that aim to capture biologically plausible human cognitive processing at an unprecedented level of detail. You will help develop this new research line and assist in teaching and supervising Master’s and PhD students in the ACS lab. This position provides an opportunity to conduct world-class research as a key member of an interdisciplinary team operating at the interface between artificial intelligence and cognitive neuroscience. Neuroscience is nowadays one of the most collaborative and active scientific research fields as it has been increasingly involving the participation of experts from other disciplines. In particular, computational and mathematical aspects of neuroscience are currently playing an important role both in modeling and replicating experimental findings and in explaining the underlying mechanisms of neurophysiological or cognitive processes. Differential equations are ubiquitous in the modeling of such phenomena and, consequently, nonlinear dynamics and dynamical systems techniques become fundamental sources of new mathematical and computational tools to study neuroscience models. The aim of this Second Workshop on Neurodynamics, NDy'18 (first edition was NDy'14) is to present an overview of successful achievements in this rapidly developing collaborative field by putting together different types of applications of nonlinear dynamics (geometrical tools in dynamical systems, numerical methods, computational schemes, dynamical measures,...) to different problems in neuroscience (mononeuronal dynamics, network activity, cognitive problems,...). Additional emphasis will be put on experimental findings seeking for theoretical explanations, and therefore this meeting is focussed on using mathematics as the primary tool for elucidating the fundamental mechanisms responsible for experimentally observed behavior in the applied neurosciences. Importantly, it will draw attention to those pieces of mathematical theory which are likely to be relevant to future studies of the brain. The final goal is spreading together mathematical methodology and neuroscience challenges and stimulating future cross-collaborations among participants, being Mathematical Neuroscience the generic topic for NDy'18. The lab of Prof. Michel at the University of Geneva is offering a software engineer position to work on development and advancement of brain-computer interfaces - devices that link persons' neural activity with computers, robotic limbs or implanted stimulators - with the aim of restoring communication and independence of people with paralysis. The successful candidate will work on several well-funded projects and is expected to transition to other projects in the future as those are initiated. The ideal candidate will have: 1. Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering 2. Successfully developed real-life project(s) in C/C++ 3. Experience in interfacing with hardware APIs 4. Experience in development of modular and multithreaded software frameworks that can be easily extended to work with other hardware and other software packages 5. Experience in the development of GUI (Qt, wxWidgets.) 6. Excellent coding standards, following industry best practices regarding code commenting, code documentation, version control, unit and integration tests. The following will also be a plus: 1. Knowledge of linear algebra and related C libraries (LAPAC, BLAS, etc.) 2. Some experience in development of Matlab software 3. Knowledge of real-time operating systems 4.
