The Papageorgiou/Investigational Targeted Brain Neurotherapeutics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to manage innovative research with a focus on neuromodulation and neurorehabilitative approaches using imaging-based neurofeedback. Our Laboratory focuses on the following areas: (i) to elucidate the mechanisms that guide plasticity following insult to the brain, by using structural, and functional measures; (ii) induce functional plasticity/reorganization of the brain by applying neurofeedback methods, such as real-time fMRI and EEG; (iii) develop optimization neurofeedback approaches via computational modelling; (iv) develop MR-compatible instruments that will assist in examining plasticity for our longitudinal studies. Our goal is to elucidate the mechanisms involved in cortical blindness, motor impairment, and chronic pain using highly quantitative methods, such as population receptive field, multivariate and univariate analyses. Equally important, our studies focus on a variety of innovative approaches, including neurofeedback in targeted and individualized regions of interest based on the patient's location and spatial extent of the lesion, optimization of rt-fMRI nFb methods with the long-term goal of central and peripheral nervous system injury neuro-rehabilitation. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Neuroscience, or Psychology or a related field. Masters degree in Neuroscience, or Psychology with 5 years of experience performing human study experiments will substitute for a PhD degree. The Research Associate is expected: • Manage clinical and basic science - fMRI and EEG studies. • Screen and schedule research volunteers. • Perform psychophysics, and behavioral assessments. • Complete study source documents and maintain study files. • Enter all data from research forms. • Perform statistical analysis and image processing. • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations and assist with IRB submissions. •Train undergraduate, and graduate students to run lab studies • Opportunities to contribute and write up scientific publications, including statistical analyses and graphical representation of data and writing. This position requires interfacing with patients: (i) during the recruitment phase; (ii) the experimental, MR scanning phase; and (iii) following up with patients as our studies are longitudinal. The candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills by focusing on solving conflict, maintain confidentiality, listen to others without interrupting, keep emotions under control, remain open to others' ideas in the team. *Benefits of noise in the transmission and processing of time-dependent stimuli by populations of sensory neurons** * We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on signal processing in recurrent neural networks, especially information filtering of sensory signals and the functional role of intrinsic fluctuations and cell heterogeneity. These aspects of neural information processing will be explored by means of analytical calculations, numerical simulations of network models, and the comparison to experimental data (collaboration with Jan Benda, University Tubingen, Germany). In order to get an idea about similar approaches pursued in the past, have a look at our recent paper in PNAS [Grewe, Kruscha, Lindner, and Benda PNAS 114 E1977 (2017)]. The successful candidate should have a degree in physics, mathematics or computational neuroscience (a background in neurobiology is desirable but not obligatory), programming skills (C++, Python, LaTeX, Linux), an excellent command of the English language, good communication skills and team spirit. Journal of Behavioural Robotics DESCRIPTION Deep Learning can equip robots with a new level of skill by utilizing insights from neuroscience. These new developments have impact on various types of robots, from companion robots to driver assistance in semi-autonomous vehicles. Deep Learning can enable unprecedented quality of results in tasks such as object detection, localization, communication and behavior learning. Training deep neural networks typically requires GPU workstations or high-performance computing servers. It may require huge amounts of data or innovative training schemes. These issues indicate only some of the special challenges when utilizing deep networks in robotics. The lab of Prof. Michel at the University of Geneva is offering a postdoctoral position financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation for up to two years to work on clinical neuroengineering projects aimed at restoring communication and independence of people with tetraplegia and locked-in syndrome using brain-controlled assistive devices and prostheses. The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr. Tomislav Milekovic, a junior group leader under the senior supervision of Prof. Christoph Michel. They will work to develop and advance brain-computer interfaces based on electroencephalography (EEG) and intracortical microelectrode array recordings. The lab of Prof. Michel at the University of Geneva is offering a postdoctoral position financed by the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering for up to two years. The successfully candidate will work on: 1. Analysis of intracortical microelectrode and ECoG recordings of people with paralysis and non-human primate models of neurological injuries and disorders. 2. Leveraging the gained knowledge to develop and advance methods for brain-controlled neuroprostheses. The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr. Tomislav Milekovic, a junior group leader under the senior supervision of Prof. Christoph Michel. The ideal candidate will have: 1. The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second, biomimetic technologies can provide useful, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering. *Biohybrid* systems are formed by combining at least one biological component—an existing living system—and at least one artificial, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The theme of the conference also encompasses biomimetic methods for manufacture, repair and recycling inspired by natural processes such as reproduction, digestion, morphogenesis and metamorphosis. The following are some examples of “Living Machines” as featured at past conferences: • Biomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors, actuators, processors) that can interact with their physical and social environments. • Biomimetic computers and architectures —neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for complex adaptive behaviour. • Active biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair. • Nature-based designs and manufacturing processes. • Biohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neuronal implants and neuroprosthetics. • Artificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and advanced prostheses and cyber-physical systems. • Organism-level biohybrids and symbiosis such as robot-animal or robot-human systems. *ACTIVITIES* The main conference will take the form of a *three-day single-track oral * and* poster presentation programme*, 17th to 19th July 2018, Museum National D’Histoire Naturelle, Grand Amphitéâtre du Museum, and UPMC, Paris, France, EU. The conference programme will include *five plenary lectures* from leading international researchers in biomimetic and biohybrid systems, and the demonstrations of state-of-the-art living machine technologies. The full conference will be preceded by up to two days of *Satellite Events* hosted at École Normale Supérieure, Paris. *SUBMITTING TO LIVING MACHINES 2018* We invite both *full papers* and *extended abstracts *in areas related to the conference themes. All contributions will be refereed, and accepted papers will appear in the Living Machines Proceedings, published in the* Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence.* Full papers (minimum 8 pages, up to 12 pages) are invited from researchers at any stage in their career and should present significant findings and advances in biomimetic or biohybrid research. More preliminary work is better suited for short paper submission (minimum 4 pages, with a maximum of ten references and no more than three self-citations). Full papers will be accepted for either oral presentation (single track) or poster presentation with a short podium preview. Extended abstracts will be accepted for poster presentation only.
