Fully funded PhD in Electrophysiology: Closed-loop Transcranial Electric Stimulation

========== PhD-project in electrophysiology: Closed-loop Transcranial Electric Stimulation of Neural Networks in a Rodent Model of Psychosis Transition. ========== Patients suffering from schizophrenia develop resistance to chemical treatments. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), a non-invasive neurophysiological approach, has been shown to alleviate some symptoms, to improve cognitive performances, and to modulate the corticothalamic connectivity. The goal of the project is to optimize a combination of stimulation parameters that make it efficient for the TES against the psychosis transition using predictive electrical biomarkers. In healthy humans and rodents, ketamine reproduces, with a single psychotomimetic dose, the abnormal amplification of corticothalamic gamma-frequency (30-80 Hz) oscillations recorded in individuals having a high-risk mental state for a psychosis transition. Gamma oscillations are naturally involved in cognition, which is also disrupted in at-risk patients. It was demonstrated that the ketamine-induced gamma hyperactivity is prevented by the antipsychotic clozapine. The Ph.D. student will experimentally investigate the TES in the ketamine rodent model of psychosis transition. In an attempt to optimize a combination of stimulation parameters with potential preventive/curative effects, the Ph.D. student will develop and build up a closed-loop feedback system that controls the TES optimally using a Kalman filter. Requested skills: ----------------- The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience, preferably with experience in in-vivo electrophysiological techniques, mathematical and statistical skills for data analysis (EEG and cellular), and basic knowledge in numerical programming and neural modelling. The successful candidate shall possess a master's degree in physics with specialization in complex systems/nonlinear dynamics and be interested in interdisciplinary research. The project implies cooperation between the Institut of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Potsdam (where the student will be enrolled) and neuroscientists and clinical researchers from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The project aims to develop advanced techniques for neurostimulation used to treat Parkinson's disease. >From the physics viewpoint, the research implies theoretical analysis and modeling of the dynamics of large neuronal populations under external stimulation. Exploiting the hypothesis that the pathological brain rhythms emerge due to excessive synchrony within a neuronal ensemble, we will develop feedback-based techniques to control these rhythms. In cooperation with experimentalists from Charité, we will try to translate these techniques into clinical practice. The project is a part of a large cooperative study funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The past decade has seen rapid progress in experimental tools that now make it possible to monitor and manipulate brain circuits in unprecedented detail. This evolution presents challenges and opportunities for both experimentalists and theorists, as the complex algorithmics of brain function and the intricate interactions among neurons cannot be approached with experiments alone. Mathematical theory is instrumental in the emergence of theoretical insights and frameworks that can help guide experimental work and identify unifying principles of brain function. The aim of the one-week summer school will be to introduce students with a strong quantitative background (in mathematics, theoretical physics, computer science, and engineering) to the emerging field of theoretical and computational neuroscience. The course will bring together leading scientists in the field, who will deliver lectures, take part in small-group discussions, and share their personal experience and views on a range of research topics. The distinguishing feature of CNeuro is the emphasis it places on the role of systematic mathematical theory for understanding the brain, in part by stressing the connections between neuroscience, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Post-doctoral position in software engineering and computational neuroscience at Brown University Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in software engineering and computational neuroscience in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Jones at Brown University. Our group combines human electrophysiological recording, computational neural modeling, and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques to study the mechanisms and meaning of brain dynamics in health and disease. We developed a new neural modeling software tool designed for researchers and clinicians to develop and test predictions on the cell and circuit level origin of human electro- and magneto-encephalography (E/MEG) data. This open-source tool is called Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN) and is distributed at https://hnn/brown.edu (Neymotin et al eLife 2020). The hired candidate will help expand HNN’s capabilities, including software development using best-practices in open-source design and community support. The candidate will also work directly with researchers to apply HNN to specific neuroscience questions. Duties will include development of tutorials, online resources, and participation in workshops aimed at training the community in the use and applicability of HNN. The candidate will work with a diverse team of researchers at Brown, Mass General Hospital, and Yale University involved in HNN development. Candidates should have a PhD in computer science, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and/or related field. Strong Python programming skills are required, and experience with neural modeling, particularly NEURON, is preferred. Software developers without a PhD may also be considered. Familiarity with E/MEG analysis methods and/or non-invasive brain stimulation is also beneficial. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and fun work environment. The Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight to take place virtually on June 15 and 16

We are happy to announce the upcoming Canadian Computational Neuroscience Spotlight (CCNS) will take place virtually on June 15 and 16. This free meeting will be hosted using the Crowdcast platform, which has been successfully used for numerous virtual conferences over the past weeks and has a multitude of tools to facilitate the interactivity we often associate with traditional conferences. The keynote speakers for this event are Dr. Nancy Kopell (Boston University), Dr. Dimitris Pinotsis (City-University of London), Dr. Cameron McIntyre (Case Western University), and Dr. Philip Corlett (Yale University). In the spirit of the doctoral School on Bioengineering and Robotics the PhD Program for the curriculum "Cognitive Robotics, Interaction and Rehabilitation Technologies" provides interdisciplinary training at the interface between technology and life-sciences. The general objective of the program is to form scientists and research technologists capable of working in multidisciplinary teams on projects where human factors play a crucial role in technological development and design. The ideal candidates are students with a higher level university degree willing to invest extra time and effort in blending into a multidisciplinary team composed of neuroscientists, engineers, psychologists, physicists working together to investigate brain functions and realize intelligent machines, rehabilitation protocols and advanced prosthesis. PhD opportunity - Insect Intelligence @ Edinburgh

The Insect Robotics group led by Prof. Barbara Webb, in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, has two funded positions available for PhD candidates, to start no later than January 2021. The topic of research will be the neural mechanisms of navigation in insects, building on our recent work modelling the central complex and the mushroom body circuits. Insects have relatively small brains but exhibit substantial intelligence and flexibility in their ability to navigate complex environments, providing an opportunity to understand problems of learning, generalisation, cue integration etc. at the level of single neurons and their connectivity. The primary project aim will be to build detailed computational models, working closely with anatomical and physiological data from our project partners, and to explore the behavioural consequences in simulated and robot agents. There will also be the opportunity to do behavioural experiments on relevant model species such as ants and dung beetles, to complement the modelling results. Students will be fully supported for 3.5 years with a standard stipend, all fees covered, and an allowance for travel and research costs. The *Applied Computational Neuroscience (ACN) research group* ( https://acn.ugr.es) headed by Prof. Eduardo Ros at the University of Granada (UGR) is looking for talented Master or PhD students interested in working in the field of computational neuroscience and neurorobotics, specifically addressing questions of motor learning and adaptation. The perfect candidate shall possess a strong mathematical, computational or robotic engineering background (or equivalent), with great interest in biological and neural systems. Demonstrated programming skills are mandatory. *Requirements:* - Applicants should have a strong quantitative background (physics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics), and a keen interest in reverse-engineering the brain. - Demonstrated programming skills (Matlab, C/C++, Python) are required. - Knowledge on computational neuroscience software (BRIAN, NEURON, NEST,…etc ) are a plus although not mandatory. - Robotics control middleware (ROS) is highly valuable. - Robotics (ROS) and programming languages (Matlab, C/C++, Python) are highly valuable. - Proficiency in oral and written English is required. - Knowledge of Spanish is not mandatory. Postdoctoral position in the Neuromodulation and Neuroprosthetics team, led by Dr. Fabien Wagner, at the Institute of Neurodegenerative Diseases, University of Bordeaux, France

Our team develops new neuromodulation paradigms and neuroprosthetic systems for repairing or replacing circuit-level functions that get disrupted after neurological disorders or injury. Our research combines techniques from Neuroscience and Neuroengineering , in particular in vivo electrophysiology, signal processing, machine learning and control engineering. We are specifically interested in expanding neuroprosthetic systems from motor to cognitive disorders. In particular, we aim at developing a large-scale brain network neuroprosthesis to restore memory after brain injury or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. To strengthen our team, we are looking to hire a motivated postdoctoral researcher, who will be expected to work on multielectrode recordings and electrical stimulation of large-scale memory networks in non-human primates performing cognitive tasks. The ideal candidate should have expertise in non-human primate electrophysiology, neurostimulation, memory disorders, brain-machine interfaces, or neuroprosthetics. This highly interdisciplinary project requires both experimental and analytical skills, and will be conducted in collaboration with other team members. The position is currently funded for a duration of 3 years.
