12ᵗʰ Advanced Scientific Programming in Python ============================================== a Summer School by the G-Node and the University of Camerino https://python.g-node.org Scientists spend more and more time writing, maintaining, and debugging software. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. As a result, instead of doing their research, they spend far too much time writing deficient code and reinventing the wheel. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are devised to be interactive and to give the students enough time to acquire direct hands-on experience with the materials. Students will work in pairs throughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. Python works as a simple programming language for beginners, but more importantly, it also works great in scientific simulations and data analysis. We show how clean language design, ease of extensibility, and the great wealth of open source libraries for scientific computing and data visualization are driving Python to become a standard tool for the programming scientist. This school is targeted at Master or PhD students and Post-docs from all areas of science. Competence in Python or in another language such as Java, C/C++, MATLAB, or R is absolutely required. Basic knowledge of Python and of a version control system such as git, subversion, mercurial, or bazaar is assumed. Participants without any prior experience with Python and/or git should work through the proposed introductory material before the course. Postdoctoral position in cortical circuit modelling (Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics) Hay lab, at Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics and the University of Toronto, is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral position in using computational models to study the effects of cellular mechanisms on cortical circuit activity and brain recordings, in health and disease. We will simulate biophysical models of cortical circuits, constrained with data from rodents and humans, to study the effect of synaptic connectivity and dendritic ion channels on cortical circuit activity and processing. In turn, we will characterize the predicted signatures of the effects in measurable signals of cortical circuit activity, which will include the spatio-temporal propagation of neuronal spiking activity, LFP in different cortical layers, and EEG. The position will be up to 3 years, renewed yearly. Applicants should have strong and relevant peer-reviewed publications, particularly modelling studies of spiking neuronal networks (conductance-based or integrate-and-fire), and experience in using NEURON and Matlab. Hay lab is located at Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (KCNI), which is part of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The centre is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and is situated at the downtown campus. Postdoctoral positions in computational neuroscience and artificial intelligence

Applications are invited for post-doctoral research positions in the laboratory of Dr. Maxim Bazhenov at the University of California, San Diego to study memory and learning and to develop neuroscience inspired computer algorithms capable of continual learning and adapting to the novel situations and contexts.This project involves close collaboration with the experimental laboratory of Dr. Bruce McNaughton (UC Irvine). The ultimate goal of the work is to advance the knowledge of how human and animal brains learn from experience and apply these principles to the artificial systems to enable continuous learning without catastrophic forgetting. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of researchers to design neural network models of dynamic interactions between the hippocampus and neocortex during learning and memory consolidation in sleep and awake based on experimental data. These models will be used to derive learning principles that can be combined with advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. An ideal candidate should have experience in computational/theoretical neuroscience and a basic knowledge of machine learning, or, alternatively, experience in machine learning algorithms and some basic knowledge of neuroscience. Experience with hierarchical learning, reinforcement learning, and/or goal-directed decision-making would be particularly helpful. The University of California offers excellent benefits. Mathematical modeling is an essential tool to cut through the vast complexity of neurobiological systems and their many interacting elements. This three-weeks school teaches the central ideas, methods, and practice of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures and hands-on project work. Each morning is devoted to lectures given by distinguished international faculty on topics across the breadth of experimental and computational neuroscience. During the rest of the day, students work on research projects in teams of 2-3 people under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Research projects will be proposed by faculty before the course, and will include the modeling of neurons, neural systems, and behavior, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data (behavioral data, multi-electrode recordings, calcium imaging data, connectomics data, etc.), and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. The course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines, including neuroscience, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics and psychology. Students are expected to have a keen interest and basic background in neurobiology, a solid foundation in mathematics, as well as some computer experience. The ENB Elite Master of Science program in Neuroengineering (MSNE) at the Technische Universität München (TUM) is a two-year graduate program, with an optional Research Excellence Certificate, hosted by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Center of Competence on Neuroengineering. Neuroengineering is an emerging interdisciplinary field that aims to translate findings in neuroscience to engineering applications, and to provide engineering solutions for neuroscience research. The Halassa lab, in collaboration with the Fiete lab, at MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences is seeking to fill one postdoctoral position at the interface of computational systems neuroscience and theoretical neuroscience. Specifically, the work will involve analyzing neural recordings and constructing neural models of prefrontal circuit operations during decision making, working memory and perceptual inference. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in joint- and individual-lab projects. The researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in several ongoing department- and institution-wide initiatives such as the Center for Brains Minds and Machines (https://cbmm.mit.edu/) and the MIT Quest for Intelligence (https://quest.mit.edu/) The Halassa lab combines well-controlled, parametric behavioral tasks in multiple species (rodents, tree shrews and marmosets) with high-density multi-site electrophysiological recordings of neural ensembles and circuit-specific optical perturbation tools. Recent studies have revealed novel roles of subcortical structures such as the thalamus in regulating prefrontal activity, and thereby, its engagement in working memory and selective attention (e.g. Schmitt et al., 2017 Nature; Rikhye et al., 2018 Nature Neuroscience). The Fiete lab builds theories and models of neural circuit plasticity, dynamics, coding, and function, and performs quantitative analysis of neural data to test models of circuit function. This is an excellent opportunity for a theoretically inclined candidate who would like to work closely with neural data. An ideal candidate will have some familiarity with neuroscience and a background in a relevant quantitative discipline, such as theoretical or computational neuroscience, physics, engineering, or mathematics. Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Whole Brain Modelling The Whole Brain Modelling Group (PI Dr. John Griffiths; www.grifflab.com) at the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics, Toronto, is looking to hire a Post-Doctoral Fellow with a strong background in computational neuroscience and/or neuroimaging. The successful candidate shall spearhead the group's efforts in computational modelling of large-scale brain dynamics, with a particular focus on brain stimulation (TMS, TDCS), EEG, neural plasticity, and macro-connectomics. The fellow will have the opportunity to shape the details of the project based on their specific interests, as well as to contribute to other ongoing projects on a range of topics, including: neuroinformatics of whole-brain modelling, mapping and modelling anatomical connectivity and microstructure with DWI in relation to ageing and stroke, and multi-scale modelling of the thalamocortical system in relation to sleep, pharmacological neuromodulation, and neuropsychiatric disease. PhD Available: Predicting Recovery from Stroke with Machine Learning Professor Howard Bowman (University of Kent and University of Birmingham) is looking to take on a PhD student to work on interpretable machine learning applied to data acquired from stroke patients (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ploras/) This work will be with Professor Cathy Price (Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, UCL), whose (PLORAS) team has collected one of the largest data sets of stroke patients (greater than 1,000), including structural MRI scans, behaviour and demographics. A key focus of Cathy Price's work is to predict the recovery trajectory of stroke patients from their structural MRI scans, particularly patients with language deficits (i.e. that are aphasic). Progress has been made on this using traditional and now deep learning methods. Critical to clinical uptake of machine learning in this area is the ability to interpret the predictions it provides in a fashion that can be communicated to clinicians, patients and carers. We seek to appoint a PhD student to work on this topic, using methods such as neural-symbolic techniques. The student will be located in the School of Computing at the University of Kent, but will regularly visit and work closely with Cathy Price's team at the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging. Expertise in machine learning will be provided by Dr Thomas Hope (Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging, UCL) and Dr Marek Grzes (School of Computing, University of Kent). The PhD being advertised will be one of a tranche of scholarships available in the School of Computing at the University of Kent at Canterbury. Our lab is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental equipment, including 3D motion capture, three virtual reality set-ups with a robot manipulandum, force plates and wireless EMG. We also use brain measurement and stimulation techniques, such as EEG and TMS. Our laboratory is currently supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. The Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and the BioCruces Hospital in Bilbao (Biscay, Spain) are offering a 6-month internship tailored to advanced bachelor students or Master students interested in the fascinating theory of complex networks in relation with multi-scale analysis of time series data from neural signals of epileptic patients. The internship can be used by Spanish and Basque students to fulfil their mandatory training credits. However, international candidates will also be very welcome. There is also the possibility to exploit the internship experience later into a full PhD project. Following are the details of the internship. Title. Multi-scale analysis of neuronal signals in epileptic patients Brief description of the research topic. About one epileptic patient out of four is diagnosed with intractable (drug-resistant) epilepsy, presenting severe, life-impairing seizures for which the only, currently available treatment option is surgical removal of epileptogenetic neuronal circuits. The success of this surgery however depends on our ability to exactly identify epileptogenic circuits. This task is challenged by the emerging hypothesis that epileptogenic circuits are distributed rather than localised in a single brain spot. In turn, this distributed scenario suggests that epileptic seizures present multi-scale spatial organisation in conjunction with hierarchical temporal activation of multiple neural circuits. In line with this hypothesis is the observation that the spectrum of oscillatory neural electrical activity during seizures recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) presents multiple frequency components, ranging from milli- to kilo hertz. It remains however unclear how to relate such temporal structure with the underlying spatially-organised activation of epileptogenic neural networks. The aim of this internship is to gain familiarity with development of mathematical and modelling techniques that could help the analysis of spatial and temporal correlations in epileptic neural activity. The intern will work in collaboration with Dr. Maurizio De Pittà (BCAM) to adapt current models of neuron-glial networks to reproduce epileptic seizures, and with Dr. Paolo Bonifazi (BioCruces) for the analysis of neural time series. Postdoc in Human Laminar Electrophysiology at NYU (BRAIN Initiative) A full-time Postdoc position will be available in the NYU Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, to study the electrophysiological basis of laminar functional MRI (fMRI). The position is part of a National Institutes of Health BRAIN Initiative-funded project in collaboration with the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research (CMRR) at the University of Minnesota and Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University. The postdoc will conduct intracranial and laminar electrophysiological recordings, as well as 7T laminar fMRI studies in people with epilepsy, and collaborate closely with a team of leading neuroscientists, physicians, and biomedical engineers. The aim of the project is to understand the neural underpinning of the laminar functional MRI signals by combining in-vivo electrophysiology in humans (NYU), high field MRI (NYU/CMRR/Maastricht) and computational modeling (Maastricht/CMRR). The candidate will benefit from the rich resources of our neuroscience community, which includes researchers at NYU School of Medicine, NYU Langone Health’s Neuroscience Institute <https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/neuroscience/>, and the Center for Neural Science at NYU. Call for postdoc application Topic: Intrinsically motivated multi-goal deep reinforcement learning in open virtual worlds Host and location: Inria Flowers Lab, Bordeaux, France Collaboration with Ubisoft (Bordeaux) Supervision: Pierre-Yves Oudeyer (Flowers team, Inria and Ensta ParisTech) Duration: between 18 months and 2 years Deadline for application: the position will be assigned and start as soon as possible (from april or may 2019). This postdoc project aims to develop autonomous lifelong machine learning techniques that enable virtual intelligent agents to make discoveries and acquire large repertoires of skills in open uncertain environments. This is key for developing agents that need to continuously explore and adapt interaction skills to new or changing tasks, environments, people to interact with, and preferences of others. The approach will leverage recent advances in curiosity-driven developmental learning (also called intrinsically motivated learning) to drive exploration in a multi-goal deep reinforcement learning framework. In particular, it will consist in studying several extensions of recent results of the Flowers lab in this area, including unsupervised learning of goal spaces using deep learning approaches (Laversanne-Finot et al., 2018) and the CURIOUS algorithm for intrinsically motivated multi-task multi-goal deep RL (Colas et al., 2019). These algorithms will be evaluated on benchmarks involving novel virtual environments dedicated to study exploration and curiosity (e.g. based on Unity3D MLagents), as well as modern open world video games in the context of a collaboration with Ubisoft (Bordeaux). Project Title: Neuronal representations of spatial memories: immune ablation of synaptic mechanisms of memory formation as an animal model of memory malfunction. Keywords: spatial memory, neural activity, hippocampus and cortex interaction, NMDA receptors, calcium imaging, animal behavior, quantitative data analysis Project description: This is a unique opportunity for a strongly motivated candidate interested in studying how information is stored long-term in the brain. The candidate will develop a set of read-outs to measure how memories are generated, retain and recalled utilizing calcium imaging data and animal behavioral readouts. The behavior is be combined with a cutting-edge freely moving calcium imaging technology (nVista minimicroscopes) to simultaneously monitor the activity of large number of individual neurons distributed over many days. Using our recently established reversible antibody-mediated disruption of NMDA receptor function in mice (Planagumà et al 2015) we will characterize at the behavioral and neural circuit levels, the mechanisms of memory formation and recall during normal and malfunctioning brains. The candidate will perform quantitative analyses of large data sets using methods from modern statistical analysis and machine learning. The project will be developed within a collaboration between several investigators in IDIBAPS (Barcelona): Josep Dalmau, MD, PhD, Jaime de la Rocha PhD, Albert Compte PhD and Pablo Jercog PhD. Together, these labs have a strong publication record investigating the neural circuit basis of different types of memory formation mechanisms, and synaptic receptor mediated autoimmune brain pathologies, and they have extended experience in Calcium imaging, electro-physiology, analysis of behavioral/neuronal data sets and computational modeling. The project is supported by CELLEX foundation and will be developed at IDIBAPS, a public biomedical research institute whose mission is to encourage Systems Neuroscience, translational research, and technological progress in the field of Biomedicine. The aim of the MPI for Biological Cybernetics as a whole is to understand information processing in the brains of humans and animals. We use experimental, theoretical and computational methods to elucidate the characteristics and implementations of the cascades of plastic and recurrent interactions that transform sensory data into perceptions, memories, appropriate choices of actions, and motor output. We are richly multidisciplinary, have excellent facilities, and are building close links with neighbouring Max Planck Institutes and the University of Tuebingen that cover systems neuroscience, machine learning, and beyond. We will simulate biophysical models of somatosensory cortical circuits, constrained with recordings from rodents and humans, to study the effect of synaptic connectivity and dendritic ion channels on cortical circuit activity. The Machine Learning Team at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, MD, has an open position for a machine learning research scientist. The NIMH is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders, and part of the the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our mission is to help NIMH scientists use machine learning methods to address a diverse set of research problems in clinical and cognitive psychology and neuroscience. These range from identifying biomarkers for aiding diagnoses to creating and testing models of mental processes in healthy subjects. We work with many different data types, including very large brain imaging datasets from various imaging modalities, behavioral data, and picture and text corpora. We also develop new machine learning methods and publish in the main machine learning conferences (e.g. NeurIPS and ICLR), and in psychology and neuroscience journals. Many of our problems require devising research approaches that combine imaging and non-imaging data, and leveraging structured knowledge resources (databases, scientific literature, etc) to generate explanations and hypotheses. We have excellent computational resources, both of our own (tens of GPUs for deep learning) and shared within the NIH (a top-100 supercomputer with hundreds of thousands of CPUs, and hundreds of GPUs). It is based on the Rescorla-Wagner model (Rescorla & Wagner, 1972) for animal cognition, which assumes that learning is driven by expectation error, instead of behaviorist association (Rescorla, 1988). The equations formulated by Rescorla and Wagner have been used to investigate different aspects of cognition, including language acquisition (e.g., Hsu, Chater, and Vitányi, 2011; St. Clair, Monaghan, and Ramscar, 2009), second language learning (Ellis, 2006), and reading of complex words (Baayen et al, 2011). ACT-R is a high-level cognitive theory and simulation system for developing cognitive models for tasks that vary from simple reaction time experiments to driving a car, learning algebra, and air traffic control. ACT-R can be used to develop process models of a task at a symbolic level. Participants will follow a compressed five-day version of the traditional summer school curriculum. We will also cover the connection between ACT-R and fMRI. In this way, aspects of model performance such as response accuracy and reaction times emerge as a consequence of neural parameters such as the neurotransmitter time constants. It has been used to model adaptive motor control, visual attention, serial list memory, reinforcement learning, Tower of Hanoi, and fluid intelligence. Participants will learn to construct these kinds of models, starting with generic tasks like representing values and positions, and ending with full production-like systems. There will also be special emphasis on extracting various forms of data out of a model, such that it can be compared to experimental data. In the tutorial we will look at how PRIMs can model phenomena of cognitive transfer and cognitive training, and how multiple goals compete for priority in models of distraction.

Prometheus: Cloud Computing Portal for Computational Optogenetics

We would like to announce the availability of "Prometheus: Cloud Computing Portal for Computational Optogenetics". This is a web-based portal for PyRhO - a set of tools with a GUI for modelling and simulating opsins in neurons, using Python, Neuron or Brian 2. The main attraction is that all necessary modules and dependencies are already installed and configured (including the Python programming language, commonly used scientific Python libraries, NEURON and Brian2 simulation platforms) and the GUI comes with some pre-loaded values. So the platform can be used immediately. Absolutely no installation or set-up is required, just a web-browser, since the portal is using IPython/Jupyter<https://jupyter.org/> notebook. The portal is available here: http://try.projectpyrho.org/ To simplify things, there is no registration wall at the moment. But please note that the resources we are currently renting from a cloud computing service provider are limited. So please be patient - sometimes it might take more time to execute your job, depending on the number of users running their codes at the same time. The project, for one year and potentially extendable for another year, includes the analysis of direct multifactorial brain interactions and intra-brain network spreading of aberrant effects in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. We are pleased to announce the 9th Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience (CCN) Summer School which will take place June 29 - July 21, 2019 in Suzhou, China. Designed to emphasize higher cognitive functions and their underlying neural circuit mechanisms, the course aims at training talented and highly motivated students and postdoctoral fellows from Asia and around the world. We welcome both applicants with quantitative backgrounds (including Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science) and those with experimental backgrounds. The lectures will introduce the basic concepts and methods, as well as cutting-edge research on higher brain functions such as decision-making, attention, learning and memory. Applications are invited for a PhD student position in the lab of Constantin Rothkopf at the Technical University Darmstadt. The position is initially funded by the German Research Foundation DFG for three years. The project 'Active vision: control of eye-movements and probabilistic planning' aims to investigate how humans carry out eye-movements across different tasks and how this can be understood with models of probabilistic planning. Recent publications of the lab on this topic include the following papers: - Hoppe, D., & Rothkopf, C. A. (2016). Learning rational temporal eye movement strategies. Applicants need to have a Masters degree in cognitive science, computer science, psychology, or related fields. In addition to a strong general interest in cognitive science, computational science, experimental psychology, and interdisciplinary research, the ideal candidate has a background in eye-tracking and probabilistic planning. Analytical know-how, awareness of experimental literature, and experience with programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++) are indispensable. Dear comp-neuro, This is a second announcement for the Summer School of the Centre for Neural Dynamics<http://www.neurodynamic.uottawa.ca/summer.html> At the University of Ottawa May 26 - June 7, 2019 The application deadline on Feb. 15 is quickly approaching. The course is intended for graduate students and undergraduate students in their third and fourth year of study in the physical sciences (e.g. physics, applied mathematics, engineering, computer science) and the life sciences (e.g. neuroscience, biology, physiology, human kinetics) who wish to develop their skills in neural data analysis and in mathematical modeling of neural activity. The topics will range from cellular to systems neuroscience, with applications in medicine. Individuals outside of academia may also participate. The first week will consist of 3 hours of lectures in the mornings followed by an afternoon of relatedcomputer-based laboratories. The second week will consist of 3 hours of lectures in the mornings, followed by an afternoon of interactive discussions and brainstorming activities. Each day will focus on a different subject in systems neuroscience and/or medicine. Participants will work in small groups with mentors, and will be prepared for these activities by directed readings. Later in the afternoon, groups will convene into a plenary session with our experts to identify proper computational questions and associated timely research projects on the focus theme. All classes will be held on the main downtown campus of the University of Ottawa. The course can also be taken for credit, since it is a University of Ottawa three-credit graduate course (NSC8104). The mark will be based on work done in the computer laboratories and a project. All students receive a letter stating that they satisfactorily participated in the school, regardless of whether they take the course for credit. The mission of the Laboratory Neurophysics will be to study the dynamics of neurons and neuronal populations, utilizing biophysical approaches, cellular electrophysiology, and neural interface technologies. The Head of the unit will guide the operation of the laboratory, design and conduct studies, supervise scientists, develop instrumentation, and acquire independent research funding. The Laboratory Neurophysics will serve as an interface for collaborative projects at the Göttingen Campus on the dynamics of neuronal cells and populations and their control through neural interfaces. The Head of the Laboratory Neurophysics will contribute to such collaborative research projects as well as to interdisciplinary teaching and training at the faculties of biology, physics, and in the biomedical sciences. Teaching subjects will in particular include quantitative concepts and methods of experimental and theoretical neuroscience, neural interface technologies and their applications in fundamental research, neural prosthetics, and the restoration of sensory and motor function. The successful candidate holds a Master in Science, University Diploma or equivalent, and a PhD or equivalent in biophysics, neuroscience or a related field, has a strong track record in biophysics and experimental and computational neuroscience, and an excellent publication record. We are looking for a person with in-depth experience in advanced quantitative methodologies and mathematical modelling in neuroscience/biophysics and the corresponding mathematical and programming capabilities. Experience with neural interfaces, quantitative imaging, cellular electrophysiology, molecular biology, and in vitro model systems will be essential. In order to optimally interact with partners on the Göttingen Campus, a broad range of research capabilities are expected: These include state of the art knowledge in synaptic and cellular physiology, in the biophysical basis of neural interface technologies, and in the development of instrumentation for stimulating animal and human brains. Experience with the study of cognitive and sensory-motor functions as well as with human studies will be advantageous. Neuroscience is a rapidly evolving field. If these cues are not appropriately reciprocated, however, the interaction can be negatively impacted. Moreover, inappropriate reciprocation, or lack thereof, may be the result of misperception and or non-timely reactions. Failure to adequately account for biologically plausible perceptual and temporal facets of interactions may detract from the quality of human-robot interaction and hinder progress in the field of social robotics more generally. Incorporation of naturalistic and adaptive forms of sensorimotor and affective human-robot non-verbal communication is challenging because such interaction is highly dependent on the context and the relationship between the observer and the expresser. Biological species based interaction often requires explicit forms of social signalling such as nodding, nonverbal gestures, emotional expressions, etc., the interpretation of all of which may be highly context-sensitive. Furthermore, naturalistic social signalling may involve a certain degree of mimicry of autonomic responses such as pupil dilation, blinking, blushing, etc. which, in human-robot interaction requires the implementation of time-sensitive perceptual mechanisms currently underused in both commercial and research robotics platforms. In this workshop, we will investigate and discuss to what extent the aforementioned naturalistic social signalling capabilities needs to be accounted for in human-robot interaction and what modalities are more relevant, and in what contexts. The workshop will focus strongly on research motivated by naturalistic empirical data. We hope to provide a discussion friendly environment to connect with research covering complementary interests in the areas of robotics, computer science, psychology, neuroscience, affective computing and animal learning research. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION available for NEUROIMAGING Laboratory of Pr. Brigitte L Kieffer Douglas Research Centre, McGill University, Montréal Canada We are seeking a Post-doctoral fellow with a strong background in neuroscience and computer programming who is interested in studying brain network activities and communication non-invasively using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) in mice. Our group is a multidisciplinay team, and studies the role of G protein coupled receptors, including opioid and orphan receptors, in brain function and disease with an emphasis on reward/aversion processing, addiction and mood disorders. The laboratory develops customized genetic mouse mutants with targeted gene mutations to model of psychiatric disorders, and for drug discovery programs. Mice are characterized using sophisticated behavioral methods, optogenetics and neuroimaging approaches translatable to human research. The postdoctoral researcher will use fMRI in living mutant animals to characterize receptor function and drug effects on brain connectivity. Implications are in both basic and biomedical research. The postdoctoral fellow will design resting-state and pharmacological MRI-based experiments, implement existing and further develop state-of-the art post-processing methods, and the research will take place at the Douglas Research Center affiliated to McGill University. The Center has a state-of-the art brain-imaging center including a 7T animal scanner with cryoprobe, and a vibrant community of neuroimaging specialists and researchers for both animal and human research. Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary research group studying how we coordinate our motor actions as we move through space. Different projects address how the brain integrates multisensory cues to create estimates of our spatial motion, how such estimates are used in action selection, planning and control as well as how we learn to execute movements in different dynamic environments (e.g., body stationary vs. in motion). Research in our group involves behavioral and single- and multi-electrode neural recording experiments in non-human primates, human behavioral studies and computational modeling of the nervous system. Multiple positions are available and include collaborative projects between the laboratories of Dr. Andrea Green, Dr. Paul Cisek and Dr. John Kalaska. Depending on specific research interests successful applicants will investigate the computation of spatial motion estimates, their contribution to voluntary reaching and/or the acquisition of new motor skills in different dynamic environments through neural recordings in non-human primates. Project: Deep temporal credit assignment with dynamic synapses Successful behaviour relies on the ability of animals and machines to predict the outcome of their actions. Selecting which synapses (or parameters) to adjust to trigger the right action is a hard problem as it depends on past sensory information. Exactly how does the brain solve such temporal credit assignment problems has remained largely enigmatic. In this project, the student will developed a novel theoretical framework to address the temporal credit assignment problem. This framework will be compared with experimental observations and tested in machine learning tasks in collaboration with experimental neuroscientists and machine learning researchers. We are looking for One Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Computational Social Neuroscience for 3 Years, to be based at the LMU, Munich. The expected starting date is between April 1st, 2019 and July 1st, 2019 Deadline for applications is February 15th, 2019 This post-doctoral fellowship will investigate how the diversity of social information affects attitudes and decisions, both for individuals and groups. This post is part of a broader project supported by the NOMIS foundation to apply quantitative methods (behavioural, computational and neuroimaging) to examine - under controlled and ecologically-valid settings - fundamental issues on the impact of diversity and volatility of information on social influence. The project is hosted by the Munich Centre for Neuroscience, and will be supervised Professor Ophelia Deroy and Dr. Bahador Bahrami. International collaborations (with Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London as well as Centre for Adaptive Rationality in Max Planck Institute for Human development in Berlin) are integral to the project and the current position. Job Description: The appointee will be expected to - develop research ideas and plan and implement experiments (ethics, design, programming); - conduct experiments and collect data from adult human subjects; - perform statistical analysis (with particular focus on using computational modelling to - prepare reports and articles for publication; - participate in regular meetings and contribute to the research environment; - supervise research assistants - work as part of a team. Requirements: The successful candidate will have a PhD level - a strong background in quantitative methods (statistics, physics, machine learning, computational neuroscience) - interest in interdisciplinary projects and - a PhD in computer sciences (machine learning), physics (eg complex systems), psychology (cognitive or social), or neuroscience (behavioural, systems). Knowledge of experimental design, statistics and data analysis is expected. Strong command of linear algebra, probability theory, computer programming (web-based platforms (e.g. Java), R, Python, Matlab) is highly desirable. The position is for three years, with an intermediate evaluation for satisfactory performance after 1 year. The appointment will be made within the German TV-L E 14 salary scheme (family benefits apply). Postdoctoral position jointly in Behrmann/Grover labs CMU in understanding neural mechanisms through noninvasive brain monitoring A postdoc position on utilizing noninvasive measurement modalities is available in the labs of Marlene Behrmann and Pulkit Grover at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA). The team's goal is to utilize existing and novel engineering and mathematical tools to understand neural mechanisms in healthy and diseased states through EEG measurements, possibly complemented by fMRI. The role of the postdoc will be to lead experimental testing, simulations, and data analysis. Thanks, Shiva _____________________________________________ We are seeking a Chief Technologist for the Movement Recovery Laboratory at Columbia University Medical Center. The successful candidate will have strong programming and neuroscience experience with expertise in signal processing and analysis of large data sets. The position is ideal for a person who likes to develop and optimize neuroscience tools. He or she will be responsible for creating and maintaining the systems for cutting-edge neuroscience research that seeks to restore movement after paralyzing injury. The Laboratory uses rodent models of disease to improve understanding of movement control, to test how electrical stimulation can strengthen neural circuits spared by injury. The laboratory uses a combination of behavior, physiology, and anatomy techniques in rats. Each of these modalities has a suite of tools that need to be made more quantitative, efficient, and precise. 1. Behavior: We quantify reaching, walking, and food manipulation using robotics and computer vision. The Chief Technologist will be charged with creating protocols and algorithms to efficiently record and analyze these movements, including reaching, stepping, and manipulation. 2. Physiology: We record and stimulate both motor cortex and the spinal cord. The technologist will help develop protocols for multichannel stimulation and for analysis of nerve and muscle signals. For example, we have created a graphical tool for real-time visualization of EMG responses to motor cortex stimulation. 3. Anatomy: We trace connections between the brain and the spinal cord using a combination of anterograde and retrograde neural tracers. The technologist will help quantify the number of labeled neurons and axons using computer vision and the results are placed into a 3D framework. The chief technologist will be expected to work independently to establish protocols and to help test them. This research work will require pro-active and interdisciplinary teamwork. The candidate should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Software design and programming skills in MATLAB (or equivalent scientific software) are critical. Knowledge of machine learning, computer vision, and source localization are other appealing skills. Most important is the ability to find innovative and practical solutions to technical problems. The position has a starting salary of $55,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, and includes full medical, dental, retirement, and other benefits. It is based on the Rescorla-Wagner model (Rescorla & Wagner, 1972) for animal cognition, which assumes that learning is driven by expectation error, instead of behaviorist association (Rescorla, 1988). The equations formulated by Rescorla and Wagner have been used to investigate different aspects of cognition, including language acquisition (e.g., Hsu, Chater, and Vitányi, 2011; St. Clair, Monaghan, and Ramscar, 2009), second language learning (Ellis, 2006), and reading of complex words (Baayen et al, 2011). Although error-driven learning can be applied for all domains in cognitive science, in this course we will focus on how it could be used for modeling language processing and language learning. Postdoctoral Positions in the Rinberg and Shoham labs

The Rinberg and Shoham labs at NYU Medical School are seeking to fill multiple postdoctoral positions at the interface of computational systems neuroscience and advanced neurotechnology. We study how olfactory and visual information is represented and processed in neural activity patterns, and how the brain extracts information relevant for behavior. The postdoctoral researches will be involved in joint- and individual-lab projects as members of NYU’s vibrant world-class hub for computational systems neuroscience, of NYU Tech4Health, a new biomedical technology development institute, and of an international collaboration network. Our labs employ modern techniques including one- and two-photon imaging and patterned optogenetics, Si-probe electrophysiology, and psychophysics approaches to systematically explore the behavioral readout of spatiotemporal neuronal codes in behaving animals. Different projects tackle this challenge using either cellular-resolution (multiphoton) or large-scale (mesoscopic) tools, in combination with advanced statistical analyses and theoretical modeling. In addition to conventional tools, we are developing new cutting-edge tools for bidirectional high-precision probing and monitoring of information processing in behaving animals, and for potential applications: the Rinberg lab is developing a bio-electronic nose - a universal, versatile, and very sensitive chemical detector based on the mouse olfactory system. The Shoham lab is working towards holography-based solutions for vision restoration. This is an excellent opportunity for computationally and technologically inclined candidates to find their niche in-between developing cutting edge technologies and applying the technologies to fundamental scientific questions. The Computational Neuroscience unit (https://groups.oist.jp/cnu) at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher or technician in software development and computational modeling of stochastic neuronal reaction-diffusion processes and 3D modeling of neurons at the submicron level. Initial duration is two years with an option to extend. The hired postdoctoral researcher or technician is expected to make valuable contributions to the STEPS project (http://steps.sourceforge.net) in two ways: 1) by researching molecular neuronal processes and designing novel techniques and routines for accurate computational modeling of such systems, and 2) contributing to realistic applications of the new techniques in biological modeling studies. In performing these tasks, the candidate is expected to contribute to publications that are either based on theory and computational techniques, or geared more towards answering real biological questions through computational modeling. As such the ideal candidate will have a scientific background but also possess good programming skills. There will be many opportunities to interact with other STEPS developers in our lab and also other researchers working on related cerebellar projects, and also to collaborate on STEPS development with the Blue Brain Project, EPFL, Geneva. Competences: For the postdoctoral position a recent PhD is required in a relevant discipline such as neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and for a technician a masters degree is required in a similar discipline or computer science. For either position, we require a talented programmer with experience in C++ and Python. In satisfying these criteria, it is expected that the candidate has some experience of modeling neuronal or other biological processes computationally, but this is not essential if the candidate has a strong enough interest in moving into the field. Fluent English conversation and writing skills are required. Benefits / Offer: A competitive salary and relocation package are offered. BindsNET - A Machine Learning Spiking Neural Networks Library in Python

[Apologies for cross-postings] Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to introduce the release of the python package BindsNET <https://github.com/Hananel-Hazan/bindsnet>and its companion paper in Frontiers in Bioinformatics “BindsNET: A Machine Learning-Oriented Spiking Neural Networks Library in Python <http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fninf.2018.00089>”. BindsNET is a python package to simulate a spiking neuronal network using a GPU. The framework is easy and well in line with Python, NumPy and PyTorch standard that runs on CPU’s/GPU’s. BindsNet will serve both the novel researcher and the seasoned programmer wanting to perform rapid prototyping prior to diving into hardware implementation. To achieve maximum performance and flexibility, BindsNET re-purposes the powerful and flexible PyTorch <http://pytorch.org/> library. By wrapping around PyTorch we avoid "reinventing the wheel" by reusing it's function and sub-modules for the spiking neuronal networks computational needs.
