The NYU ECoG group has an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to a project aimed at unravelling laminar cortical computations and validating laminar resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans. Laminar fMRI is becoming increasingly popular as it enables the study of feedback and feedforward flow of information in the living human brain (e.g., Muckli, Current Biology 2015). Yet, the neurovascular and physiological computations underlying laminar signals are not well understood. Our group is part of an exciting international collaboration that aims to rigorously validate laminar fMRI against laminar electrophysiology and develop a proper neurovascular coupling model. The postdoctoral fellow would contribute to this team effort involving researchers at NYU Langone Health, the Center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Minessotta (Essa Yacoub), and Maastrich University (Elia Formisano, Federico de Martino, Kamil Uludag). The project is funded by a BRAIN initiative RO1 grant. The role of the postdoc is to perform laminar electrophysiology in human subjects with epilepsy and as well as to conduct laminar fMRI in the same patients. We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious postdoc, with a strong background in human and/or animal electrophysiology and a desire to learn high-field MRI. No previous experience with MRI is required. A strong background in signal processing, and strong quantitative skills (e.g., Matlab, C++, Python) are required. The initial post is for 1 year with the opportunity to renew for up to 4 years. Postdoctoral researchers will be given the opportunity to participate in other lab research endeavors, and they are expected to make a strong contribution to the lab's overall research efforts. The research facilities at NYU are exceptional and include laminar electrophysiology setups as well as 7T MRI. The postdoc will join a vibrant community of researchers within NYU (NYU ECog, NYU Neuroscience Institute, and the NYU Center for Neural Science) and across the consortium of investigators at University of Minnesota and University of Maastricht. Two Postdoctoral Positions in Auditory Biophysics: Optics & Theory

We welcome applications for postdoctoral candidates with expertise in optics, instrument development, or theoretical modelling who want to apply their skills in the field of the biophysics of hearing. Two positions in Dr. Andrei Kozlov’s lab (www.kozlovlab.com<http://www.kozlovlab.com/>) in the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London are supported by a five-year Wellcome Trust Investigator Award: one experimental and one theoretical. We investigate mechano-electrical transduction by hair cells, the receptor cells of the inner ear. These cells can detect and amplify atomic-scale vibrations at thousands of cycles per second. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying this extreme sensitivity. To achieve our goal, we combine novel experimental and theoretical approaches. The experimental position will focus on developing new optical methods, including laser interferometry, and combining them with electrophysiology. Practical knowledge of optics or optomechanics is essential for this work. For more information about this kind of research, see Kozlov et al., Nature, 2011. The theoretical position focuses on modelling mechano-electrical transduction, combining analytical and numerical techniques, and is in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Risler at Institut Curie in Paris. The successful candidate for this role will have a strong background and track record in Theoretical Soft Matter, Statistical Physics or a related discipline. PhD Position in Data Science and Modeling in Neuroimaging at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf, Germany One PhD position is available in data science and computational modeling with a focus on the data-driven analysis of neuroimaging data in the lab of Prof. Dr. Simon Eickhoff at Jülich Research Centre and University of Düsseldorf in Germany. The PhD candidate will work on projects aiming to study the effective connectivity of functional brain networks derived from task-based and resting-state fMRI data. Open Source Brain workshop 9-11 Sept 2019 & new publication

Models of cells and circuits in standardised formats can be visualised, analysed and simulated through a standard web browser. A key driver for the development of this technology is to improve accessibility, scientific scrutiny, reproducibility and reuse of models of brain function. The platform is described in a recent paper in Neuron: https://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(19)30444-1 The 2019 OSB Workshop will highlight the latest features of OSB and engage current and future users of the platform through invited talks, posters, hands on demonstrations, and user presentations. Since we are substantially expanding the functionality of Open Source Brain to enable sharing of standardized experimental data used to build and test the models of neurons and circuits, this year’s meeting will have two key themes: 1) Accessible sharing of cellular neuroscience data Through support for the Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) format, OSB will facilitate sharing of multiple types of experimental data used to constrain computational models, including electrophysiological recordings, Ca2+ fluorescence imaging, 2D, 3D and 4D imaging and behavioural data. Challenges, requirements and solutions to data standardization will be discussed. 2) Modelling cortical structures across scales Cortical networks are modelled at many scales from abstract representations of interacting populations (neural masses) to networks of biophysically and morphologically detailed cell models. NeuroML is being expanded to cover a greater range of these models, which will allow them to be shared and simulated on OSB, facilitating comparison of models and ideas between researchers. *Postdoctoral Position opening at the University of Pittsburgh in neuroimaging of mood disorders* Candidates are being considered for a post-doctoral associate position in the Anticipation, Cognition and Emotion lab ( www.ace.pitt.edu ) at the University of Pittsburgh (http://www.pitt.edu) to work with Dr. Anna Manelis and her team. A successful candidate will work on the NIMH funded research project that uses multimodal neuroimaging (fMRI, MRI, DTI and fNIRS) to understand the contribution of anticipatory processing to cognitive and emotional dysfunction in individuals with mood disorders. Pittsburgh is a vibrant community which promotes diversity and collaboration within its university and medical systems. Our lab works in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to perform neuroimaging studies which will help us to better understand mood disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorders. *Required Qualification*s: we are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree (or anticipated PhD degree) in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience or a related discipline. A strong research background in the analysis and interpretation of neuroimaging data is required. A successful candidate will have excellent writing and communication skills. Candidates with a strong computational background are encouraged to apply. Experience with FSL, Freesurfer and E-prime is preferred. The ability to program in Shell, Matlab, Python and/or R is preferred. Experience with fNIRS, graph modeling and pattern classification analyses is a plus. Paper: Forward propagation closed loop learning

Dear all, we have a new paper out where we have propagated errors forwards (and not backwards): "For an autonomous agent, the inputs are the sensory data that inform the agent of the state of the world, and the outputs are their actions, which act on the world and consequently produce new sensory inputs. The agent only knows of its own actions via their effect on future inputs; therefore desired states, and error signals, are most naturally defined in terms of the inputs. Most machine learning algorithms, however, operate in terms of desired outputs. For example, backpropagation takes target output values and propagates the corresponding error backwards through the network in order to change the weights. In closed loop settings, it is far more obvious how to define desired sensory inputs than desired actions, however. To train a deep network using errors defined in the input space would call for an algorithm that can propagate those errors forwards through the network, from input layer to output layer, in much the same way that activations are propagated. In this article, we present a novel learning algorithm which performs such ‘forward-propagation’ of errors. Call for contributions ----------------------------- Workshop on "Role of movement-based active perception in navigation and its neurorobotic correlates" at SWARM 2019: The 3rd International Symposium on Swarm Behavior and Bio-Inspired Robotics, Okinawa, Japan Date: November 22, 2019 Location: Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Onna-son, Okinawa, Japan Workshop url: https://arilab.unit.oist.jp/swarm2019/#ws Workshop overview ---------------------------- Active perception in animals involves executing behaviours that move sensory appendages (e.g. eyes, pinnae, antennae or whiskers) in space to increase flow of sensory stimuli as well as the sampled information content. This increased sampling can significantly improve the animal's understanding of its environment. In this context, perception (interpretation of sensory stimuli) and action (behaviours that move the sensory appendages) are tightly coupled. Several biological studies have identified the important role of movement-based active sensing for increasing sensory volumes and many robotic studies have investigated the principles underlying active perception in adaptive behaviour. Insects and rodents are very promising model organisms to study active perception, as they possess highly mobile sensory appendages, a wide variety of sensilla and a well-studied nervous system. The neurorobotic approach, i.e. developing robotic models of biological neural mechanisms, is well-suited for hypothesis-testing as it allows one to isolate and embed the neural mechanism of interest within an artificial body that can sense and act in the real world. This relieves scientists from the task of modelling the statistics of sensory stimuli, as the real world provides these statistics for free. This full day workshop brings together leading experts, from both biology and neurorobotics perspectives, to shed light on the principles underlying active antennal perception as well as its neural correlates and discuss the neurorobotic approach to modelling active perception. Learning outcomes: - Understanding the basic concepts and principles of active perception - Knowledge of neural correlates of active perception - Knowledge of embodied AI and the neurorobotic approach - Applying these concepts and knowledge in developing agents/robots that utilise actively moving antennae to execute navigation behaviours such as taxis The full-day workshop consists of: - Theory (lectures): Invited talks by experts from biology and neurorobotics, - Practice tutorial: Hypothesis-testing via neurorobots in simulated and/or real-world navigation tasks, - Discussion and future directions Submission guidelines ------------------------------ Contributions in the form of 1 page conf. style abstract on active perception. This includes both studies in biological organisms as well as in robots. The newly formed research group of Dr. Wilten Nicola, at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary invites applications for talented PhD and postdoctoral researchers commencing in the fall of 2019 or Winter of 2020. The Nicola lab is focused on the interplay between network connectivity, and dynamics in populations of spiking neurons.. We attack this problem using two general approaches: *Bottom Up*: Given a set of synaptic weights, what dynamics or phenomenon emerge in a network of neurons coupled by these weights? Potential methods*: Fokker-Planck systems, Mean-field approaches, Wilson-Cowan modelling. * *Top Down*: Given a desired dynamical system that a network should display, how should the individual neurons be coupled together such that the network displays these dynamics? *Potential methods: Inverse Problem Theory and Machine Learning approaches to training Recurrent Neural Networks.* *PhD Requirements:* An undergraduate/masters degree in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Engineering, or other quantitative fields with a strong interest in neuroscience, or machine learning. *Postdoctoral Requirements*: A PhD in applied/pure mathematics, computational neuroscience, physics, or related quantitative fields. The candidate will work in the PILEP +90 project "Application of machine learning to study factors of healthy and pathological aging”, led by Jaime Gómez-Ramírez at Fundación CIEN. The researcher will be affiliated with Big Data Research & Brain Analytics Unit, Area of NeuroImaging at Fundación CIEN. The goal of this project is to use state-of-the-art machine learning to understand human brain aging. In particular, the project will study healthy subjects 90 years or older. For this purpose, the project lead will have access to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), lifestyle, cognitive performance and genetic data of the participants in the study. Fundación CIEN is home to a multidisciplinary community of scientists in neuroscience, with special focus on aging, both healthy and pathological. The researcher will have access to a large MRI dataset collected in the last 8 years and will collaborate with the international partners in the project. BRAIN Theories postdocs to develop history dependent theories across scales.

Two Postdoctoral positions to develop a framework to study history dependent activity across scales and species. The objective of this NIH BRAIN Theories project is to develop a unified theoretical framework to study history dependence across the nervous system. This is based on our previous work on using fractional order differential equations to study reaction diffusion and spiking dynamics in single neurons. In this project, we will further extend our theory to determine variability in cortical neurons, understand the effect of history dependence on network dynamics, coding, and information rates; and will apply our knowledge at the cellular level to predict and understand sensory processing in intact animals. This is an expansive project, with multiple collaborations. The fitting candidates will have the opportunity to interact with laboratories at McGill University, in Canada; Max Planck Institute for Dynamics & Self Organization, in Germany; and the Allen Brain Institute. Your theoretical background could be in dynamical systems, applied math, or computational neuroscience. Having knowledge of fractional order differential equations is a plus, but not required. Technically, you need to know Matlab. Knowledge of python and NEURON are a plus. You have to have a fundamental knowledge of neuroscience or demonstrate a willingness to catch up. The laboratory has all the necessary resources, from high end CPU/GPU servers, to local clusters, and access to the largest supercomputers and cloud services through the Texas Advanced Computer Center and the Chameleon Cloud. The laboratory also offers an interdisciplinary environment where experiments in cerebellar research are combined with computational and theoretical approaches. We just acquired a new multi-photon microscope with spatial light modulation capabilities that will allow us to interrogate the cerebellum in ways not possible before. San Antonio is one of the best places to live in the US. Official PGENESIS 2.4 release and GENESIS 2.4 Update

I would like to announce the Official Release of PGENESIS 2.4 along with a significant update to GENESIS 2.4. GENESIS is implemented with an object-oriented design that groups related object and command definitions into separately compiled libraries. Parallel GENESIS (PGENESIS) adds a library with a "postmaster" object to the usual usual GENESIS objects and commands. This allows a GENESIS simulation (e. g. a large network model) to be split into many MPI processes that communicate through the postmaster. The November 2014 release of GENESIS 2.4 was intended to be the last packaged GENESIS 2 distribution for download from the GENESIS web site (http://genesis-sim.org/GENESIS) As GENESIS is user-supported, rather than centrally developed, updates to GENESIS and PGENESIS are now obtained from the Repository for Continued Development of the GENESIS 2.4 Neural Simulator (https://github.com/genesis-sim/genesis-2.4) The object-oriented design and organization not only fosters the community development of neural models, but of the simulator itself. This new mutually-developed release of PGENESIS is such an example. As users have continued to contribute new libraries and improvements, there has been an increased use and extension of GENESIS and PGENESIS for its original purpose of realistically modeling cortical networks of multicompartmental neurons on parallel computers. Recent updates to GENESIS and a merge of the GENESIS/PGENESIS development branch from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have addressed a number of issues in order to increase its scalability for modeling very large networks on high performance computing resources, allowing for models of millions of neurons. These improvements have made it necessary for a new release of a combined package of the May 2019 GENESIS 2.4 Update and the PGENESIS 2.4 Official Release. Information about this release and downloads are available from the GENESIS web site (http://genesis-sim.org/GENESIS) The official release of PGENESIS 2.4 is much improved from the December 2014 preliminary release. Updates of GENESIS since the 2014 release allow the fast "hsolve" solver to be used with new synaptic plasticity models and measurements of cortical field potentials. The efficient delivery of spike events when hsolve is used with large network models results in increases in simulation speed by factors of 10 to 20. This release of PGENESIS 2.4 is also now available for running large-scale network simulations on supercomputers at the Neuroscience Gateway Portal (NSG). We have a Research Fellow opening through a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and Monash University for someone to develop and crowdsource machine learning and data science approaches to solving seizure prediction. Seizure prediction will enable the generation of warnings so a person with epilepsy can move to safety, or activation of electrical stimulation or drug delivery to prevent seizures. Our team leverages unique long-term human brain activity data to find novel, clinically relevant solutions to seizure prediction, and publishes these findings in the highest impact neurology journals (Lancet Neurology, Nature Reviews Neurology, Nature Neuroscience, Brain, PNAS). A postdoctoral researcher position studying human locomotion is available in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Ferris ( https://faculty.eng.ufl.edu/human-neuromechanics-laboratory) This position is for an initial one-year appointment, and has the potential to be renewed for an additional three years based on performance and funding availability. Dr. Ferris has a long history of training professionals who have entered and succeeded in both academic and industry positions. The postdoctoral research will work on a currently funded NIH project (U01 AG061389) designed to identify neural correlates of mobility impairments in older adults. Research will involve using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) to track changes in electrocortical dynamics in older adults in a longitudinal study. Subjects will walk on a range of terrain surfaces to determine how they compensate for surfaces that challenge their stability. We will determine whether poorer walking performance is associated with the Compensation Related Utilization of Neural Circuits Hypothesis (CRUNCH). CRUNCH is a well-supported model of brain activity patterns that are seen when older individuals perform tasks of increasing complexity. CRUNCH describes the over-recruitment of frontoparietal brain networks that older adults exhibit in comparison to young adults, even at low levels of task complexity. CRUNCH also describes the limited reserve resources available in the older brain. These factors cause older adults to quickly reach a ceiling in brain resources when performing tasks of increasing complexity. *Attributes of UF and Gainesville*: The BME Department is housed in a state-of-the art building that is located in the medical school and steps from engineering. VanRullen [Apologies for cross-postings] We are seeking talented and motivated students and post-docs for a number of open positions, in a collaborative effort between the labs of Thomas Serre (Brown University/Toulouse) and Rufin VanRullen (Toulouse). The positions will be based in Toulouse (France), with numerous opportunities to travel, in particular for visits to and close collaborations with the Serre lab at Brown University (USA). The successful candidates will become involved in a number of projects, depending on their particular interests, and will also have the opportunity to develop independent projects. Applicants for the PhD positions should hold a Masters degree or equivalent. Applicants for the post-doc positions should hold a PhD, or expect to receive their PhD shortly. Candidates must have a strong background in computer vision and/or computational neuroscience and/or machine learning. Excellent python programming skills and Tensorflow/PyTorch experience are required. We invite applications for two postdoctoral positions focusing on the application of causal optogenetic approaches to dissect the neural circuits underlying sensory perception. The applicants should have a strong background in neurophysiology, circuit neuroscience, or behavioral neuroscience and be highly independent with a strong propensity for interdisciplinary research. Previous experience with electrophysiological recordings, two-photon GCaMP imaging, optogenetics or behavioral analysis is desirable. It will bring together international and local students under the tutelage of the world's leading experts in the field. Like its international sister courses, this three-week summer school aims to teach central ideas, methods, and practices of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures and hands-on project work. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on topics across the breadth of experimental and computational neuroscience. The rest of the day will be spent working on research projects under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Individual research projects will focus on the modelling of neurons, neural systems, behaviour, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data, and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. PhD positions in Neuromorphic machine learning, AI and robotics for chemical sensing Biocomputation Group University of Hertfordshire UK We are seeking candidates who want to join an international team of researchers with the goal to push the boundaries of chemical discovery. We use machine learning, AI and robotics to develop new methods for chemical sensing (electronic noses), gas-based navigation in robots, and knowledge discovery in chemical space. Our group leverages a new kind of computing hardware, so called neuromorphic systems, to translate processes from the brain into algorithms for efficient computing. We take inspiration from neuroscience to develop massively parallel, event-based, and power-efficient algorithms for machine learning, inference and control. Post-doc in Computational Neuroimaging of Decision-Making

We are looking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow to make a leading contribution to an EU-funded project on the neurobiology of human decision making. The post will be based at the School of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Leeds. The aim of our research is to characterise the spatiotemporal dynamics and the computational principles of the brain networks underlying the processing of multisensory information, the formation of perceptual decisions and the execution of subsequent actions. To this end, we use multimodal recordings including neuroimaging (EEG), motor signals (EMGs and kinematics) and behavioural data coupled with advanced multivariate analysis methods and computational modelling. We develop computational methodologies inspired by machine learning, statistical signal processing, information theory and Bayesian modelling to fuse data from different modalities, extract the main patterns of brain activity and characterise their functional roles with respect to the task at hand. The goal of this project will be to unravel the neural representations of the mental processes implicated in the processing of (multi-)sensory information and the formation of perceptual decisions. Candidates must have previous practical experience in EEG recordings and data analysis as evident by a strong track record of publications in international journals. Working knowledge of multivariate data analysis techniques and excellent programming skills in Matlab and/or Python are highly desirable. Dear all, A PhD position in computational neuroscience is available at the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The main objective of the project is to investigate the neural mechanisms of multisensory perception and sensory predictions, within the context of a novel theoretical framework of perception and consciousness that is being developed in the Group. These neural mechanisms will be investigated using theoretical and computational approaches based on both biophysically detailed models of corticothalamic circuits and neural network models trained with deep learning strategies. The research is partially funded by the Human Brain Project and will benefit from collaborations with local experimental teams and with other European research groups. The project will be supervised by Jorge Mejias (leader of the Computational Neuroscience Team) and Cyriel Pennartz (head of the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group). We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in neuroscience (with strongly developed quantitative skills) or in a related field, including physics, mathematics, computer science, or biomedical engineering. The candidate is expected to have a solid mathematical background (calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems) and strong programming skills (MATLAB, Python). Knowledge in methods of computational neuroscience and deep learning is a plus. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. We offer a full-time appointment for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive performance evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,325 in the first year to €2,972 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scale for PhD candidates. Postdoc Position: Modeling Language in the Human Brain Using Artificial Neural Networks

MODELING LANGUAGE IN THE HUMAN BRAIN USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS A joint postdoctoral position is available in the labs of Christopher Honey and Tal Linzen at Johns Hopkins University. ( https://www.honeylab.org and https://caplabjhu.org ) The goal of this project is to use state-of-the-art artificial neural networks to understand the mechanisms and architectures that enable the human brain to integrate linguistic information at the levels of syllables, words and sentences. For this purpose, the project lead will have access to high-fidelity intracranial recordings from the surface of the human brain, as people process sentences and narratives. In parallel, this project is expected to generate new computational models and analytic methods for natural language processing (NLP), informed and constrained by human data. Johns Hopkins is home to a large and vibrant community in neuroscience and computational linguistics, and the training environment will span the Departments of Cognitive Science, Psychological & Brain Sciences, and Computer Science. The postdoctoral researcher will be affiliated with the Center for Language and Speech Processing, one of the world’s largest centers for computational linguistics (https://www.clsp.jhu.edu/) For candidates who wish to collect new datasets, Hopkins provides a top-notch neuroimaging center, including 3T and 7T scanners; new TMS and EEG facilities housed in the PBS department; and access to human intracranial experiments via neurology collaborators in Baltimore and Toronto. In particular, we will focus on causal learning in the context of goal-directed instrumental behaviors, which rely on learning rules determined by the contingency//between actions and outcomes. In order to unravel the neural and computational bases of action-outcome causal learning, we need to lift two key barriers. The first barrier is the lack of neurocomputational models that formalise the above-mentioned theoretical framework to make precise predictions about the underlying neural computations. The second barrier is the lack of clear understanding of the brain network dynamics supporting action-outcome causal learning. *Activities: * The selected candidate will contribute to lift the first barrier, by developing neurocomputational models that: i) formalise internal representations and computations predicted by causal learning theories (/rational /and /Bayesian /frameworks); ii) make predictions about the dynamics of neural activity (i.e., neurobiological plausibility) and fit single-participant behavioral patterns (i.e., computational flexibility). Among the possible learning models, two seem to provide the adequate theoretical and computational framework: Active Inference and Reinforcement learning. The former is a Bayesian approach postulating that human behaviour can be reduced to the minimization of variational free energy, which is an upper bound on Shannon surprise (Friston, 2010). The latter provides a complementary view and formalizes human behavior as a process that aims at maximizing cumulative (extrinsic or intrinsic) reward (Sutton & Barto, 1998). The selected candidate will help designing a new experimental protocol to test the specific predictions of these computational frameworks, and compare them with Bayesian model comparison methods. The experiment will involve human subjects and be realized with the facilities of the GATE (Experimental Economics) laboratory in Lyon, France. Then we will derive a computational model which best accounts for human behavior while they learn causalities, and make model-driven predictions for a new task involving brain imaging (fMRI, MEG, SEEG) performed in humans by partners of the project. *Skills*: Applicants should be highly motivated, have a PhD in computational neuroscience, physics, computer science, or related fields, with a track record of publications. Confirmed experience in computational modelling and programming skills are mandatory. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in causal learning models in neurosciences. *Work context*: We have obtained funding from the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche for 4 years project aiming at lifting the previously mentioned two barriers. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the fields of developmental psychology, developmental robotics, embodied cognition, body mapping, and computational modeling to create a productive, collaborative, and multidisciplinary forum from which different facets of these fundamental processes linked to body mapping and mapping the self will be explored. The workshop will be organized around three general themes with specific speakers and experts in each area: 1. Body mapping: This theme will group developmental and learning studies in infants, adults, and robots on self-touch, self-exploration of the body, self-localization, and haptic perception to understand how the mapping of the self forms. 2. Defining the peripersonal space: This theme will examine the range and conditions through which our peripersonal space develops, is being perceived, and being modulated through interactions with objects, people, and events in our daily surroundings. This theme will contrast infant, children, and adult studies as well as computational models. 3. Sense of self and body ownership: This third theme will explore how our brain builds a map and sense of ownership of objects as extensions of our own body. An NIH funded post-doc position is available at the University of Pennsylvania w Johannes Burge. A postdoctoral position is available in Johannes Burge’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania to work on the psychophysics and the computations underlying depth and motion perception. We use both artificial and natural stimuli to probe the function of the human visual system, with a focus on understanding how the pattern of light falling on the back of the eye is used to recover 3D structure and movement in the environment. We have a variety of high-end displays in the lab, the capability for eye tracking and pupillometry, high-fidelity databases of natural signals, and custom software tools for statistical learning. Work environment The Netherlands has an outstanding track record in the language sciences. The Language in Interaction research consortium, sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organisation for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? The new Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group project aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance the knowledge of how human and animal brains learn from experience and apply these principles to the artificial systems to enable continuous learning without catastrophic forgetting. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), Section on Neurobiology of Fear & Anxiety. This section examines neural systems models of emotion/cognition interactions. This is done in two ways: one that focuses on anxiety in health and disease, and the other that uses a developmental perspective using large datasets. Four types of data are exploited, clinical/behavioral assessment, psychophysiology, fMRI (particularly 7T high-resolution scanner) and MEG. The candidate must have a doctoral degree (PhD) in computational neuroscience, or computer science/engineering and at least 5 years of experience post Ph.D. analyzing large datasets, modeling complex neural systems, using advanced machine learning algorithms. Experience with technical computing in MATLAB, R, C++ and a strong mathematical skill set is required. Knowledge of multi threaded and paralell computing environments is desirable. An interest in neuroscience or prior experience in neuroscience related fields is a plus. The staff scientist is expected to be a key member of the Section on Neurobiology of Fear and Anxiety, contributing to analytical methodology, design of new projects. University of Toronto, Bernhardt-Walther Lab and Semantic Technology Lab A Post-doctoral position in computational modeling of vision and knowledge acquisition is available with Dirk Bernhardt-Walther (Psychology) and Michael Grüninger (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) at the University of Toronto. We seek a colleague who shares our interest in explaining how structured knowledge about the world arises through visual perception. The project combines formal logic in ontologies with perceptual grouping of visual elements in complex, real-world scenes. Optionally, the project may involve measuring brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The ideal candidate has a strong computational and mathematical background, experience with state-of-the-art computer vision techniques and/or a strong background in computational neuroscience. The ability to communicate with a diverse team of researchers from engineering and psychology is an essential prerequisite. Current state-of-the-art computational models of visual processing are trained to extract visual features of increasing complexity in a hierarchy of layers, choosing a label from a pretrained set of categories at the apex of the hierarchy. Such systems lack an important aspect of the human visual system – a notion of meaning of visual content. The project aims to develop a new model of visual perception, which integrates the generation of networks of meaning into all levels of the visual processing hierarchy, thus allowing structured visual knowledge to arise naturally from visual perception. Specifically, this will involve the generation of a large database of images of real-world scenes with detailed ontological annotations, development of data structures and algorithms for extracting such ontological structures automatically from images, and testing the viability of our new meaning-based model of vision for explaining aspects of human vision. The University of Toronto, typically ranked as one of the world’s top 20 research universities, is located in downtown Toronto. The city is one of the most livable and cosmopolitan cities in the world, and has a vibrant academic and information technology community. This full-time position includes benefits and is fully funded for two years, with an initial appointment of one year. A postdoctoral position is available for working in an NIH BRAIN initiative funded project on the role of the basal ganglia in motor decision making in behaving mice. The project aims to elucidate how subcortical structures feed back onto and influence cortical processing. A revised electromagnetic theory of the brain

Dear Colleagues, A common dogma of neuroscience is that all electrical events occurring in the brain are well described by an electrostatic theory. However, adopting a geometric attitude it becomes immediately clear that the propagation of an action potential induced a non-conservative electric field within nearby spines, and thus an electromagnetic description of the function of a brain is unavoidable. I would like to present to you with a revised and simplified version of the theory I advanced last year, entitled "Dynamic Aspects of Finite Architectures". Each year, every AFOSR portfolio can nominate one YIP recipient. Especially since the Cognitive & Computational Neuroscience portfolio is new this year, I wanted to make the neuroscience community aware of this opportunity (and also of the new portfolio). Unlike most of AFOSR's research grants that are open to researchers worldwide, YIP awards are limited to US persons (citizens, nationals, or permanent residents) with full-time, permanent positions at US institutions (by Oct. 1, 2019) who received their doctorates NO EARLIER than April 1, 2012.
