A PhD position on multiscale theory and simulation of human language processing is available in the group of Prof. Tilo Schwalger at the Technical University Berlin and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin (https://page.math.tu-berlin.de/~schwalge) Germany. The position is offered in the context of the project The Role of Long-Range Brain Connectivity in Human Language Processing (ConnLingua), a collaboration between the Technical University Berlin, the Max-Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (Leipzig), the Technical University Chemnitz, and the Czech Acedemy of Science (Prague). We will use spiking neural network models for cortical microcircuits, models of white-matter connectivity as well as advanced mean-field methods and human MEG data to develop a whole-brain model that elucidates the neural mechanisms of syntactic language operations. The candidate should have a background in physics, mathematics, computer science, or computational neuroscience. Excellent analytical and programming skills as well as a keen interest in mathematical modeling are required. In addition, expertise in stochastic nonlinear dynamics is desirable. At the Bernstein center, we offer a structured program guiding doctoral researchers through the PhD work and plenty of opportunities for collaborations. Development of high-precision eye-tracking technology for closed-eye conditions using machine learning and deep neural networks (DNNs). 2. Reconstruction of visual imagery (and potentially dreams) from non-invasive neuroimaging techniques (fMRI/MEG), combined with machine learning-based eye-tracking technology. The research offers promising applications in both academic and industrial contexts. This position is for an initial term of 24 months, with the possibility of renewal pending available funding. We seek a postdoctoral fellow with strong interests and a solid background in brain decoding and the application of machine learning methods in neuroscience. The eye-movement project (approximately 60-70% workload) involves training neural networks to map Electrooculography (EoG) signals onto concurrently recorded eye-tracking data. This approach aims to significantly enhance EoG precision and enable accurate eye-tracking even with eyes closed. This project is funded by an ERC Proof of Concept (PoC) grant. The brain decoding project (approximately 30-40% workload) utilizes deep neural networks and diffusion models to decode visual information from neuroimaging data and generate images (pictures, short video) directly from brain activity. Our ultimate aim is to apply this technology to internally generated mental contents, including visual imagery, dreams, and lucid dreaming. The Shocklab, picoPET, and SoLow research groups at the University of Cape Town (UCT) invite suitably qualified candidates to apply for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in AI for low-cost medical imaging. The fellowship advances research at the intersection of artificial intelligence, image reconstruction, and multimodal neuroimaging, with applications to global health and diagnostic equity in low-resource settings. Call for Applications The successful fellow will be jointly hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, the picoPET group in the Department of Physics, and the SoLow group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and will conduct research on AI-based PET/MRI reconstruction, PET–MRI fusion, and advanced image analysis techniques. Conditions of Award (General) • Applicants must have achieved a doctoral degree within the past five (5) years. • Applicants may not previously have held full-time, permanent professional or comprehensive academic posts. • The successful incumbent will be required to comply with UCT’s approved policies, procedures, and practices for postdoctoral fellows. • No benefits or allowances are included other than those stated under Value and Tenure. • Postdoctoral fellows may undertake up to 12 hours per week of remunerated employment outside the fellowship for professional development; such remuneration is taxable and processed via UCT HR. Value and Tenure • Value of the fellowship: R500,000 per annum, compliant with the SARS Binding Class Ruling and therefore tax-exempt. • Travel allowance: R50,000 per annum for conferences and collaborations. • Tenure: One (1) year, renewable for up to one (1) additional year (maximum two years). Academic Criteria • PhD in a relevant field (e.g., AI, biomedical engineering, medical imaging, applied mathematics, physics). • Experience with image reconstruction/medical imaging or a strong computer vision background, and deep learning. • Proficiency in Python-based ML frameworks (e.g., JAX, PyTorch). • Strong publication record and ability to work independently. Project Description The fellow will lead research at the interface of AI and low-cost imaging hardware, including: • Design of AI-based PET and MRI reconstruction algorithms optimized for signal recovery, clinical interpretability, and efficiency. • Validation on simulated and experimental data, benchmarking against MLEM, OSEM, and FBP using PSNR/SSIM or related metrics. • Development of PET–MRI image fusion pipelines combining picoPET and SoLow data. • Evaluation of the diagnostic utility of fused images through expert review or pilot clinical studies. • Exploration of advanced techniques (e.g., end-to-end multimodal models, latent-space regularization, attention mechanisms, diffusion-based denoising, super-resolution). The long-term aim is to demonstrate that AI can enable high-quality medical imaging in low-resource settings using affordable hardware. To Spike or Not to Spike: A neural network model of how neurons communicate

Dear Comp-Neuro colleagues, I am writing to announce the publication of my new article that describes psychological and neurobiological properties of neural network models that are composed of spiking neurons. The article is: Grossberg, S. (2025). Spiking neural network models of neurons and networks for perception, learning, cognition, and navigation: A review. Brain Sciences, 15(8), 870. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3425/15/8/870 The Abstract of the article summarizes some of its high points: This article reviews and synthesizes highlights of the history of neural models of rate-based and spiking neural networks. It explains that theoretical and experimental results about how all rate-based neural network models, whose cells obey the membrane equations of neurophysiology, also called shunting laws, can be converted into spiking neural network models without any loss of explanatory power, and often with gains in explanatory power. These results are relevant to all the main brain processes, including individual neurons and networks for perception, learning, cognition, and navigation. The results build upon the hypothesis that the functional units of brain processes are spatial patterns of cell activities, or short-term-memory (STM) traces, and spatial patterns of learned adaptive weights, or long-term-memory (LTM) patterns. It is also shown how spatial patterns that are learned by spiking neurons during childhood can be preserved even as the child’s brain grows and deforms while it develops towards adulthood. Indeed, this property of spatiotemporal self-similarity may be one of the most powerful properties that individual spiking neurons contribute to the development of large-scale neural networks and architectures throughout life. Postdoc position in the Unit on the Neural Computations in Learning, NIMH

We have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to join my lab at the National Institute of Mental Health at the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Research in the lab is focused on the computational neuroscience of reward prediction and learning. Broadly, we study how timing, inference processes and goal selection modulate learning in reward-guided tasks in animals and humans, and how these processes are instantiated in neural activity across the reward learning circuits of the brain. Our goal is to understand how reward learning is altered in compulsive behaviors, addiction, and motivational deficits in disorders of mental health. We are looking for a postdoc who is interested in developing approaches from reinforcement learning, dynamical systems theory, and Bayesian inference to understand the online regulation of reward prediction and learning in neural activity and behavior. We work with a broad network of collaborating labs that span rodent, NHP and human studies, and the ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a highly interdisciplinary environment to pursue novel and translational insights into the neural basis of reward learning. This opening is an excellent opportunity for a computational neuroscientist who wishes to apply theoretical ideas to understand empirical data, with the opportunity to collaborate on novel paradigms to test computational models of reward-guided behavior and reward learning in the brain. I would like to draw your attention to our recently revised Master's program in Neurorobotics at Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany). The program is hosted within the Department of Computer Science and integrates robotics with fields such as neural networks, computational neuroscience and reinforcement learning. It is open to computer scientists, but also to students with a bachelor's degree in related disciplines, such as physics, engineering and psychology with sufficient background in computer science. Psychology Discipline and Robotics Institute at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia are offering a fully funded PhD position for interdisciplinary research into using computational models to improve human-robot collaboration. Project description Collaboration between humans and robots is rapidly increasing, creating a need for integrative work between engineering and psychology to improve robots' collaborative skills. One promising approach is to equip robots with cutting-edge cognitive computational models of their human collaborators' decision-making processes. These models would enable robots to account for latent factors guiding human decisions (e.g., beliefs, inferences, preferences, risk, confidence, caution), during collaborative tasks. This could enhance the efficiency of robots' observational learning and allow them to take actions that support and optimise human decision-making, ultimately improving teamwork and productivity. The project will be supervised by Dr Milan Andrejevic, a Lecturer in Psychology, and Dikai Liu, a Distinguished Professor in Robotics from the University of Technology Sydney, and entail a collaboration with Prof. Jakob Hohwy, a Professor in Philosophy from Monash University. We seek candidates who are interested in studying the application of machine learning tools in cognitive and neurosciences. we seek to address key gaps in our understanding of the role of gaze-based communication in value-based decision-making in primates, specifically rhesus macaques, red-fronted Lemurs, and humans, using naturalistic, interactive scenarios. The goal is to understand how primates attribute perception to others do, based on their gazes and postures. Our approach to dealing with complex brain and behavior data from these scenarios is to use state-of-the-art machine learning tools to extract interpretable latent dynamics. The Structured Information for Precision Neuroengineering (SIPLab)<https://siplab.gatech.edu/> at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA) is hiring a postdoctoal fellow to work with Drs. Christopher Rozell and Sankar Alagapan. We are seeking a postdoc with a background in human neuroscience who has finished (or is about to finish) a doctoral degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or related areas. The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting human subject studies with neural data acquisition (e.g., EEG, MEG, intracranial EEG, fMRI) and be proficient in analytical approaches for neural data analysis (e.g., artifact removal, time-frequency analysis, functional connectivity, etc.). Experience in cognitive neuroscience, brain stimulation, mobile EEG, other physiological data streams, or advanced machine learning approaches (e.g., dynamical systems modeling, deep learning) will be considered a plus. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative individual who enjoys working in an exciting interdisciplinary research environment. This role will build on our recent advances<https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06541-3> in neurotechnology therapies for treatment resistant depression to further understand the circuit basis (and potential therapeutic approaches) for psychiatric disorders. The lab is committed to the professional development of the members, making it valuable preparation for people who are interested in academic, industrial or entrepreneurial careers. The position has no mandatory teaching or administrative duties, but the successful candidate will take an active role in mentoring students and further developing the research program. Excellent (written and oral) communication skills in English are required. The start date is flexible but ideally would be as soon as possible. The position is initially for 12 months with the possibility of renewal. Compensation will be commensurate with relevant experience and NIH standard scales. Dear all, We have an open postdoctoral researcher position in the Institute of Machine Learning and Neural Computation at Graz University of Technology, Austria. The project will be focused on developing energy-efficient solutions using spiking neural networks (SNNs) for wireless communication systems. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of neuromorphic computing and wireless technologies, in particular by designing novel learning algorithms for SNN-based energy-efficient neural receivers. Candidates are required to have a PhD degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, electrical engineering, or similar. A strong background and research experience with spiking neural networks and deep learning are expected. Open PhD position in project SHIFT: A Shift towards Dynamic Perception Analysis with Continuous Psychophysics

We have a fully funded open PhD position in the lab of Constantin Rothkopf (https://www.pip.tu-darmstadt.de/) at the Centre for Cognitive Science @ TU Darmstadt in a joint DFG-AEI project in collaboration with Joan López-Moliner (U. Barcelona) on continuous psychophysics. This exciting new experimental paradigm abandons the rigid trial structure involving binary responses and replaces it with continuous behavioral adjustments to dynamic stimuli: Bonnen, K., Burge, J., Yates, J., Pillow, J., & Cormack, L. K. (2015). Continuous psychophysics: Target-tracking to measure visual sensitivity. Hi everyone, We are organizing a workshop on “Foundation Models for the Brain and Body <https://brainbodyfm-workshop.github.io/>” at NeurIPS 2025. The workshop brings together researchers at the interface of biosignals and machine learning. We invite submissions of short papers on novel research in neuroscience, biosignal analysis, and machine learning, with a focus on foundation models and representation learning for neural, physiological, and behavioral data. We also invite interactive demo proposals that showcase novel methods, devices, or applications. We broadly define biosignals as any temporal signal directly or indirectly generated by the brain or body. This includes neural recordings (e.g., EEG, MEG, multi-electrode arrays), physiological signals (e.g., heart rate, respiration), and behavioral signals (e.g., pose extracted from video, gaze). Submissions may focus on methods, applications, or theoretical insights that enhance our understanding of neural and physiological signals in humans and animals. How can we make sense of the terabytes of empirical data collected every day? In our everyday work, we often forget that every scientific endeavor is embedded within a broader theoretical framework. At the same time, most courses and workshops in neuroscience focus on experimental techniques, providing us with more tools to gather more data—but rarely teaching us how to develop *ideas* and integrate our research with existing knowledge. We believe that theoretical thinking and idea development are skills that can be trained, just like learning new methodologies or data analysis tools. At our school, we aim to teach participants how to think theoretically—to collect data that makes sense and to make sense of the data collected. Max Planck Research Group Leaders at the MPI for Biological Cybernetics, Tuebingen, Germany. The aim of the MPI for Biological Cybernetics is to understand normal and dysfunctional information processing in the brains of humans and animals. We use experimental, theoretical and computational methods to elucidate the characteristics and implementations of the cascades of plastic and recurrent interactions that transform sensory data into perceptions, interoceptions, memories, appropriate choices of actions, and external and internal motor output. We are richly multidisciplinary, have excellent facilities for neuroimaging in humans and capacity for work in animal model systems. We have close links with neighbouring Max Planck Institutes and the University of Tuebingen that cover systems neuroscience, machine learning, and beyond. The working language of the Institute is English. We seek to recruit two independent research groups working in relevant areas and collaborating with each other, departments at the Institute and beyond. Funding covers a set-up package, the position of the group leader (equivalent to a German W2 professorship), one post-doctoral and one or two PhD student fellowships, a technician, secretarial support, plus consumables. It lasts in the first instance for 6 years, with the possibility of a merit-based extension for 3 further years. We seek talented candidates with successful track records who are interested in coming to build a Max Planck Research Group in this environment. The question is whether we can adapt these models to solve an actual decision task? You'll find at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules of a simple decision making challenge. Roughly, you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. This tutorial will introduce two new software tools, Jaxley and DendroTweaks, which provide complementary approaches for developing detailed biophysical models. While there is significant potential here, we are just starting to figure out how to apply modern AI models to interpret and process scientific data, and significant challenges remain. The trend of applying AI to better understand the brain concurs with another reviving trend: applying knowledge from neuroscience to developing new AI. Indeed, despite the tremendous progress, the existing generation of AI shows significant limitations, including a lack of continual learning, poor generalization, dependence on enormous amounts of data for training, bias, and safety problems. These are features where the biological brain excels, highlighting the strong need to learn once more from neuroscience how to develop the next generation of AI. The proposed workshop will combine these two complementary trends, bringing experts from the field together to discuss how AI can facilitate new scientific discoveries and how knowledge of the brain can help improve AI. NEURON and NetPyNE tutorial at CNS*2025, July 5, 2025

Dear colleagues, This July 5th, there will be a “Building mechanistic multiscale models with NEURON and NetPyNE” tutorial at CNS*2025, all day in room 6. To attend, please be sure you have registered for the tutorials at the conference: https://www.cnsorg.org/cns-2025-registration This tutorial will introduce multiscale modeling using NEURON 9.0 and NetPyNE. The tutorial will combine background, examples and hands on exercises covering the implementation of models at four key scales: * single neuron electrophysiology (e.g. action potential propagation), * intracellular dynamics (e.g. calcium buffering, protein interactions), * neurons in extracellular space (e.g. spreading depression), and * networks of neurons. For single cell simulations, we will utilize NEURON through Python, simulating point cells and incorporating realistic morphology information from NeuroMorpho.Org. For network simulations, we will use NetPyNE, a high-level interface to NEURON supporting both programmatic and GUI specification that facilitates the development, parallel simulation, and analysis of biophysically detailed neuronal circuits. We conclude with an example that links intracellular molecular dynamics with network spiking activity and local field potentials. The NetPyNE tutorial will be carried out online using the Open Source Brain web platform (http://v2.opensourcebrain.org) and will include an introduction to NeuroML, a standardized computational neuroscience language to describe detailed models of neurons and neural networks. The tutorial highlights recent substantial developments and new features in both NEURON and NetPyNE. Basic familiarity (e.g. loops, functions, variables, if) with Python is recommended. Dear Colleagues, * * we are pleased to announce the workshop "*Enabling synaptic plasticity, structural plasticity, and multi-scale modeling with morphologically detailed neurons using Arbor*", which will take place at *CNS*2025* on *Wednesday, 9 July*, in Florence, Italy. Current computational neuroscience studies are often limited to a single scale or simulator, with many still relying on standalone simulation code due to computational power and technology constraints. Simulations incorporating biophysical properties and neural morphology typically focus on single neurons or small networks, while large-scale neural network simulations often resort to point neurons as a compromise to incorporate plasticity and cell diversity. Whole-brain simulations, on the other hand, frequently sacrifice details at the individual neuron and network composition levels. This workshop introduces recent advances leveraging the next-generation simulator Arbor (https://arbor-sim.org/) designed to overcome these challenges. Arbor enables seamless conversion from the widely used NEURON simulator, facilitates the study of functional and structural plasticity in large neural networks with detailed morphology, and supports multi-scale modeling through co-simulation, integrating microscopic and macroscopic levels of simulation. Arbor is a library optimized for efficient, scalable neural simulations by utilizing both GPU and CPU resources. It supports the simulation of both individual neurons and large-scale networks while maintaining detailed biophysical properties and morphological complexity. The workshop will feature presentations covering three key aspects: * *Effortless transition from NEURON to Arbor:* Beatriz Herrera will introduce the SONATA format, which simplifies the migration process and enables cross-simulator validation, ensuring a smooth transition to Arbor for researchers familiar with NEURON. * *Plasticity simulations with Arbor:* In two talks, Jannik Luboeinski and Felix Wolf will present Arbor’s capabilities in modeling calcium-based functional plasticity as well as calcium-based distance-dependent structural plasticity, providing insights into synaptic and structural changes. * *Multi-scale co-simulation with TVB:* Thanos Manos will demonstrate Arbor’s co-simulation capabilities with The Virtual Brain (TVB) platform, illustrating the study of epilepsy propagation as an example of multi-scale modeling. This contains as a corollary the first complete wiring diagram of a visual system, which has been used to identify all 200+ cell types that are intrinsic to the Drosophila optic lobe. About half of these cell types were previously unknown, and less than 20% have ever been recorded by a physiologist. Intelligence in nature is very diverse; it can be discussed in terms of the intelligence of chimps, dolphins, and many other animals and even the collective intelligence of very simple life forms such as ants. The concept of intelligence is being adopted in many domains of science. From practical and theoretical perspectives, an essential current research direction that is under examination by a very large number of scientists worldwide is the development of artificial systems, also called agent-based systems, which can be either individual agents or cooperative multiagent systems. These systems are embedded in the environment, possess a certain degree of autonomy, and are capable of perceiving the environment and executing actions in it. Intelligence in agent-based systems can emerge through advanced problem-solving abilities. To develop these intelligent systems, techniques such as supervised learning and unsupervised learning play pivotal roles. Supervised learning involves training systems on labeled datasets, enabling them to map inputs to outputs and improve their predictions or classifications over time. These methods are extensively used in applications such as image recognition, natural language processing, and medical diagnosis. On the other hand, unsupervised learning enables systems to identify patterns and structures in unlabeled data, facilitating clustering, anomaly detection, and exploratory data analysis. A more recent paradigm, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and cache-augmented generation (CAG), combines retrieval- and cache-based methods with generative models to enhance intelligent systems, producing highly contextualized and accurate responses or actions. These approaches are instrumental in developing advanced systems for domains such as conversational AI, knowledge management, and decision support. Intelligent agent-based systems have many real-world applications, including the health sciences and industry. The number and diversity of intelligent systems are increasing rapidly. In this context, the great challenge consists of creating increasingly intelligent systems. Another critical challenge, approached by only a few researchers worldwide, is the development of universal metrics, including black-box-based intelligence metrics, to measure the intelligence of these systems. Such advances could allow for the comparison of systems based on their intelligence. In cooperative multiagent systems, intelligence can be assessed at the system level; this is known as collective intelligence. Even in very simple cooperative multiagent systems, agents may interact nonlinearly at various decision points, resulting in emergent complexity and intelligence at the system level. This Special Issue aims to establish a solid foundation for future research through a collection of papers that advance the field by elaborating on theories, designing applications, and presenting surveys regarding the next generation of increasingly intelligent systems. Dear all, I am excited to announce an opening for a PhD position at the Chair for Sensory Neuroengineering, Department Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU in Germany. The PhD student will work on an innovative project in the neurobiology of communication. The project will investigate neurobiological mechanisms and electrophysiological markers of speech comprehension. The PhD student will therefore develop and employ EEG hyperscanning, in which the neural activity of several subjects engaged in a conversation will be measured simultaneously. They will furthermore develop AI algorithms to analyse the obtained data. The results will contribute to better customization and real-time adaptation of hearing aids to their wearers. FAU is the most innovative university in Germany and ranks second among the most innovative European universities. It is located in one of the most attractive regions in Germany. These systems can exhibit a manifold of global fixed points capable of implementing sophisticated input-output mappings, which we characterize analytically. Learning from extensive datasets is achieved through the stabilization of fixed points via a fully distributed and local learning process, implemented at the single-neuron level. This simple mechanism yields performance comparable to that of conventional feedforward deep neural networks trained using gradient-based methods. The effectiveness of the model stems from the dense and accessible manifolds of stable fixed points, which encode the internal representations of data. Unlike other approaches to deep learning without backpropagation, our method does not attempt to estimate gradients. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce the upcoming CNS*2025 Workshop "Brains and AI", to be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Florence, Italy. This workshop will explore the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence - bringing together researchers applying AI to brain data and those leveraging insights from neuroscience to build better AI systems. https://users.sussex.ac.uk/~tn41/CNS2025_workshop/ Advances in neuroscience techniques have dramatically increased the volume of data we can now collect from animal and human brains. However, this surge in data has introduced new challenges in extracting meaningful insights. Fortunately, these developments have coincided with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), which holds the potential to transform how we analyze and utilize scientific information. While there is significant potential here, we are just starting to figure out how to apply modern AI models to interpret and process scientific data, and significant challenges remain. The trend of applying AI to better understand the brain concurs with another reviving trend: applying knowledge from neuroscience to developing new AI. Indeed, despite the tremendous progress, the existing generation of AI shows significant limitations, including a lack of continual learning, poor generalization, dependence on enormous amounts of data for training, bias, and safety problems. These are features where the biological brain excels, highlighting the strong need to learn once more from neuroscience how to develop the next generation of AI. The proposed workshop will combine these two complementary trends, bringing experts from the field together to discuss how AI can facilitate new scientific discoveries and how knowledge of the brain can help improve AI. The CSNG Lab <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Charles University is seeking a highly motivated *Postdoctoral Researcher* to join our team to work on *digital twin model of visual system. *Funded by the JUNIOR Post-Doc Fund <https://cuni.cz/UKEN-178.html>, this position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of systems neuroscience, computational modeling and AI. *Project description:* Modern deep-learning techniques have transformed visual neuroscience by substantially improving the ability of models to predict cortical neuron responses to unseen visual stimuli. However, current deep-learning methods have two major shortcomings. First, they focus on predicting only the average neural response, failing to capture the fine temporal dynamics generated within recurrent neural populations. Second, these models rely on standard "off-the-shelf" architectures optimized for efficient training rather than reflecting the biological substrate under study. As a result, they function as black boxes, making it difficult to interpret the learned representations in terms of how visual processing is organized and implemented in biological neural circuits. These limitations hinder the ability of deep-learning models to provide meaningful insights into the principles governing vision and translate them to clinical applications such as brain-machine-interface systems. To address these challenges, in this project *we will develop novel modular, multi-layer recurrent neural **network (RNN) architectures that directly mirror the architecture of the primary visual cortex.* Our models will establish a one-to-one mapping between individual neurons at different stages of the visual pathway and their artificial counterparts. They will explicitly incorporate functionally specific lateral recurrent interactions, excitatory and inhibitory neuronal classes, complex single-neuron transfer functions with adaptive mechanisms, synaptic depression, and others. We will first train our new RNNs on synthetic data generated by a state-of-the-art biologically realistic recurrent spiking model of the primary visual cortex developed in our group. After we establish the proof-of-concept on the synthetic data, we will translate our models to publicly available mouse and macaque data, as well as additional data from our experimental collaborators. *What do we offer:* We are the Computational Systems Neuroscience Group (CSNG) <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> based at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, Prague. The main goal of our group is to identify computations implemented in the neural system that underlies sensory perception, as well as applying this knowledge to the design of stimulation protocols for visual prosthetic systems. To that end, we build models of visual systems at various levels of abstraction using a variety of computational techniques including, but not limited to, machine learning and large-scale biologically plausible spiking neural network simulations. The position is *fully funded for 2 years, *and comes with a salary equivalent to ~2400 EUR/month. We offer a dynamic international working environment and collaborations with world-leading experimental labs (Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Institute de la Vision Paris etc.). *Candidate profile:* Strong background in modern machine learning techniques. Whether these coding dimensions causally drive decisions or merely reflect them remains unclear. Here, we investigate the mechanistic role of residual dimensions—neural activity patterns orthogonal to coding subspaces—in shaping choice behavior. We developed a recurrent neural network model that fits large-scale neural recordings and behavior, disentangling coding and residual subspaces at the single-trial level. Applied to anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and motor thalamus recordings during a delayed response task, the model reveals that perturbations along residual dimensions—but not the choice axis—reliably flip decisions, recapitulating a recent paradoxical effect observed with targeted two-photon optogenetic manipulations: activity outside the task-coding subspace exerts stronger causal influence on behavior than perturbations aligned with the choice axis. These effects arise from transient, high-dimensional feedforward trajectories shaped by residual dimensions and converging onto discrete attractor states. Crucially, residual dimensions drive dynamics in coding dimensions, rather than the reverse. To probe the trial-to-trial impact of residual activity, we modeled single-trial deviations as low-dimensional inputs that shift trajectories relative to trial-averaged dynamics. This framework captures decision variability mechanistically: errors emerge when fluctuations in residual dimensions steer dynamics toward incorrect attractors. Extending the model to include thalamocortical loops, we find that inter-area communication operates primarily through residual—not choice-selective—pathways. Title: Understanding Neural Mechanisms of Human Motor Learning by Using Explainable AI for Time Series and Brain-Computer Interfaces This PhD project will focus on uncovering mechanisms of human motor adaptation by using advanced computational tools. By analyzing (and potentially collecting new) EEG and MEG + behavioral data from multiple datasets you will explore how the brain adapts movements to external perturbations. There will also be an opportunity to test the newly obtained understanding using a brain-computer interface (BCI) protocol. The project will be co-supervised by Dr. Dmitrii Todorov and Dr. Veronique Marchand-Pauvert, and will be carried out within an international interdisciplinary team.
