The positions are funded for up to 42 months on a new EC-Horizon 2020 initiative called "Ionic Neuromodulation For Epilepsy Treatment (IN-FET)", combining neurobiology, nanotechnologies, electrochemistry, and electronics together for designing a breakthrough novel technology in brain modulation. The research positions aim to experimentally validate novel routes for cellular and microcircuit stimulation or suppression, in collaboration with a consortium of partners which includes IBM Research Zurich, the University of Geneva, the University of Sheffield, and the Inter-university consortium for Nanoelectronics. We search for experts in in vitro electrophysiology (substrate-integrated microelectrode arrays) and patch-clamp recordings (dissociated cell cultures, acute and organotypic brain tissue slices) with a strong background in quantitative data analysis and a strong interest for interdisciplinary research. The Project Manager position aims at supporting the organization, dissemination, and reporting activities in the context of EC-funded project and partially at supporting scientific software development. Postdoctoral / Research Specialist position in Neural Circuits and Behavior The Reiser lab at the Janelia Research Campus (https://www.janelia.org/lab/reiser-lab) seeks a creative scientist to join us in figuring out how the fly brain uses visual information to control behavior. We use behavioral, anatomical, imaging, electrophysiological, and computational methods to understand the neural circuits for vision and navigation in Drosophila. This is an exciting time to be working on the fly brain—full brain connectomes and precise genetic access to nearly every cell type in the brain are on the horizon. We pair these tools with high-throughput, high-content exploration of Drosophila behaviors. In this position, you would apply these methods to deeply map behavioral circuits. Two or more PhD positions in theoretical and computational neuroscience are available in the "Neural Reckoning" group of Dan Goodman at Imperial College London (http://neural-reckoning.org) I am interested in supervising students with a strong mathematical, computational or neuroscience background. Projects could be carried out in several possible areas relating to the work in the group. Some suggestions for topics that would be interesting to me are below, but I'm very happy to consider other possibilities. In addition to working within the group, studying at Imperial College provides excellent opportunities for interacting with other theoretical and experimental researchers, both at Imperial and in the many neuroscience groups in London. At the moment, I'm particularly interested in using techniques from machine learning to generate biologically plausible models that can also perform complex tasks. I'm also generally interested in how to perform computations with spiking neurons, and the computational role of neural mechanisms (such as spiking and heterogeneity). I often work in the auditory system, which is particularly interesting when thinking about temporal processing. Finally, I'm one of the authors of the "Brian" spiking neural network simulator (http://briansimulator.org) and I'm always interested in students who want to work on neuroinformatics projects such as simulation or neural data analysis. Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biomathematics at Florida State University, beginning August, 2020. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related discipline and postdoctoral experience in some area of biomathematics. The ideal candidate will have experience working with experimental data, and will pursue collaborations with experimental scientists. The position is joint with the Institute of Molecular Biophysics (IMB), whose core mission is to facilitate interdisciplinary research related to the biological sciences on campus. The IMB hosts an interdisciplinary graduate program in Molecular Biophysics, and there is a separate interdisciplinary graduate program in Neuroscience on campus. The new hire could participate in either or both programs, in addition to the graduate program in biomathematics. The Mathematics Department is also an active participant in a new initiative on Data Science at the university, and with this hire seeks to strengthen the ties between mathematical data science and biomathematics. Florida State University is one of two flagship research universities in the State University System of Florida, and is ranked number 18 among all public universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The university enrolls over 40,000 students in the main campus of Tallahassee. Tallahassee is located in north Florida and has a population of roughly 190,000. Two PhD student positions in Neuroscience are available at the University of Sussex from 1 February 2020. Project The PhD positions will develop within the project “Peripheral Olfactory Coding: Information Processing outside the Brain” funded by the Leverhulme Trust. This project will investigate early olfactory coding in the model system of the fruit fly Drosophila. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that one key element underlying odour object recognition are non-synaptic interactions between receptor neurons, i.e. information pre-processing outside the brain. Successful candidates will work in one of two areas, depending on interest: Single sensillum recordings (SSRs) on olfactory receptors or behavioural experiments in a wind tunnel. They will be involved in the entire work from experimental design, practical experimentation, selection and execution of data analysis and, depending on interest, computational interpretation in models. You will work closely with Dr Mario Pannunzi, Prof Thomas Nowotny and Prof George Kemenes on this project. Candidate Requirements Candidates should have an MSc or equivalent in natural sciences, ideally in the area of Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. In addition, strong analytical skills and fluency in English are essential for this project. Interest and skills to work in a multi-disciplinary and extensively networked project are important. I have an immediate opening for a post-doctoral fellow to engage in a federally-funded multi-year project in biomedical deep learning. My research group at Drexel University focuses on developing state-of-the art deep learning-based algorithms and applying them to a wide range of problems. Ongoing projects are: * Design of novel and application of existing cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) models (e.g. Transformer, BERT, GPT-2, XLNet) for biomedical information retrieval and text summarization. This is an unprecedented opportunity to harness unstructured information from millions of documents, use this information to guide generic drug product development. * Development of novel and application of existing deep generative models (e.g. GANs, VAEs) to explain the high-dimensional structure and time course of neural population activity. The focus is on the extraction of low-dimensional temporal patterns in high-dimensional spiking and local field potentials datasets in visual attention and working memory tasks, and the development of new tools for causal inference (e.g. copula Granger-causality). The ideal candidate should have, or be about to receive, a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with substantial computational experience (especially in deep learning/NLP). Programming skills in Python and/or Julia are essential. Professor Aaron Seitz in the Department of Psychology at UC Riverside has several openings for graduate students. Students can work in one or both of the Perception and Learning lab and the Brain Game Center. The Perception and Learning lab conducts basic research on perception, learning and memory using a variety of approaches including advanced Psychophysics, EEG, fMRI, and computational methodologies. The UCR Brain Game Center for Mental Fitness and Well-being is a unique research unit that focuses on translational psychology and neuroscience work where we exploit the potential of consumer technologies to conduct research at large scale. This involves running hundreds to many thousands of participants on research studies designed to develop better measurements of perceptual and cognitive abilities as well as new training tools for these skills. To date we have developed numerous approaches addressing vision, hearing, working memory, executive function, and fluid intellige! nce. The project is focused on investigating features of cognitive training that differentially lead to learning and transfer of learning in both young adults (college-aged individuals) as well as in older adults. The post-doctoral researcher is expected to take a lead role in the project, including setting up experiments, collecting and analyzing data, training and supervision of graduate students and undergraduate research assistants, and dissemination of results at conferences and in research publications. Successful candidates should have strong technical skills, including in data analysis (R preferred), management skills, creativity and a high-level of conscientiousness, as these are required to play a lead role in this sizeable project. They should also have expertise in one or more of the following areas (and knowledge of the others): working memory, cognitive training, perceptual learning, and methods of assessing individual differences and effects of interventional studies. Experience in programming psychophysical experiments, in either MATLAB or Python, is preferred. I am looking for someone trained in nonlinear dynamics and neural modeling, with a background in either physics or mathematics, and perhaps engineering. The work will focus on the dynamics of a population of core recurrent neurons within the hippocampus and their role in temporal and spatial memory. It will involve bridging single cell and network circuitry. The candidate will be involved in theoretical-experimental collaborations with the Profs. The position The Zero-Noise Lab investigates how neuronal population activity unfolds in real time during naturalistic behaviour, and how this compares between mouse and monkey. To this end, we conduct chronic electrophysiological recordings in the visual cortex of macaques and mice, while they are engaged in the same, naturalistic foraging task in a virtual environment. The lab is jointly headed by Marieke Schölvinck and Martha Nari Havenith, and funded by the Max Planck Society. In the lab, postdocs and PhD students focus on experiments in either mouse or monkey, but intensely work together to ensure that we constantly align and mutually learn from experiments across species. We are now looking for a postdoc to lead the monkey side of the lab, while developing their own ideas and research interests. Ideally, we would like you to start in spring 2020. A postdoctoral position is available at the Computational Systems Neuroscience Lab (Department of Computational Sciences, Wigner Research Center for Physics, Budapest Hungary) to work on a project focussing on integrating prior information with current evidence in early vision. The project is an HFSP-funded collaboration between four labs: Peyman Golshani's (UCLA, mouse electrophysiology and imaging), Máté Lengyel’s University of Cambridge, theory), and Wolf Singer’s Lab (ESI, Frankfurt, monkey electrophysiology). The focus of the research project is how acquired knowledge can be integrated with incoming information during visual perception. Joining team members will work on novel population analysis techniques and/or develop computational theories of hierarchical computations. The position offers a chance to work actively with state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, to access advanced computing architectures and to get involved in cool experiments right from design of experiments, to develop predictions, and analysis of data. The ideal candidate has a strong mathematical background, preferably with a PhD in physics, computer science, or mathematics or other quantitative disciplines. Besides mathematical skills, the position requires competence in programming (e.g. matlab, R, python, or C++). Candidates with training or research experience in statistics, machine learning, computational modelling, dynamical systems, systems neuroscience are especially encouraged to apply. Training in neuroscience is not required but the applicant has to demonstrate his/her willingness to acquire the necessary background for the project. The MAIN MEETING is single-track. A set of invited talks is selected by the Executive Committee, and additional talks and posters are selected by the Program Committee, based on submitted abstracts. The goal is to provide an informal forum for the discussion of important research questions and challenges. Controversial issues, open problems, comparisons of competing approaches, and alternative viewpoints are encouraged. The overarching goal of all workshops should be the integration of empirical and theoretical approaches, in an environment that fosters collegial discussion and debate. - There will be 4-8 workshops/day, running in parallel. - Each workshop is expected to draw between 15 and 80 people. - The workshops will be split into morning (8.00-11.00 AM) and afternoon (4.30-7.30 PM) sessions. - Workshops will be held in Breckenridge, CO, a ski village 80 miles west of Denver. Buses from the main conference will be provided. - Workshop speakers do *not* receive free registration, travel expenses, or accommodation for either the main meeting or the workshop sessions. Organizers should let invited speakers know that they are expected to pay for workshop registration fees Workshop organizer responsibilities include coordinating workshop participation and content, scheduling all speakers, submitting a final schedule for the workshop program, and moderating the discussion. Organizers can, but need not, be speakers. One complimentary (free) organizer registration is provided per workshop. For workshops with two organizers, the free registration can be given to one of the organizers or split evenly between them. Any required multimedia resources beyond a projector, screen, and microphones will be the responsibility of the workshop organizers to coordinate with Cosyne and Breckenridge staff. EVALUATION CRITERIA As stated above, the goal of Cosyne workshops is to provide an interactive, informal forum for discussions. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: sensory processing; motor planning and control; functional neural circuits; motivation, reward and decision making; learning and memory; adaptation and plasticity; neural coding; neural circuitry and network models; and methods in computational or systems neuroscience. Workshop proposals will be evaluated by the Cosyne Workshop Chairs, and a subset of the proposals will be selected. The proposals will be evaluated according to the following six metrics (which will be weighted equally): 1. Relevance to the Cosyne community 2. Integration of experimental and theoretical issues 3. Current interest in the topic in the scientific community 4. Potential for new research directions and interactions to emerge 5. Distinctive scope/approach compared to other workshops (including previous years’) 6. Diversity and equity in the proposed speakers PRE-PROPOSALS In an effort to coordinate submissions, workshop organizers are *strongly encouraged* to submit a pre-proposal by *06 October 2019.* Submission instructions for workshop (pre)-proposals are available at Cosyne.org -> Workshops. Pre-proposals may be shared among submitters to reduce topical overlap or facilitate merging of workshops. Pre-proposals are not mandatory, but workshops with a pre-proposal will have priority. In order to foster discussion within Workshops and reduce overlap between workshops, organizers should inform invited speakers that a speaker can take part in no more than two Workshops. PRE-PROPOSALS should include: - Name(s) and email address(es) of the organizers (no more than 2 organizers per session, please). A primary contact should be designated. - A title. - A brief description of 1) what the workshop will address and accomplish, 2) why the topic is of interest, 3) who is the targeted group of participants. - Names of potential invitees, with indication of confirmed speakers. Preference will be given to workshops with confirmed speakers. - Proposed workshop length (1 or 2 days). Most workshops will be limited to a single day. If you think your workshop needs two days, please explain why. - A brief resume of the workshop organizer(s) along with a short list of workshop-relevant publications (about half a page total). Experience has shown that the best discussions during a workshop are those that arise spontaneously. A good way to foster these is to have short talks and long question periods (e.g. 30+15 minutes), and have plenty of breaks. We recommend keeping the number of talks small (i.e., fewer than 10 talks per day). FULL PROPOSALS should include the list of confirmed speakers in addition to components required for a pre-proposal.
